This was the perfect YA romance that was loving and inclusive while also showcasing real life issues that so many lgbt youth consider and struggle with in their everyday life. The sweet relationship between Amber and Jack keeps you wanting more and more with each page. This was the sweetest standalone you could ask for!

First I wanna talk about the voice actor reading this book they are one of my favorite all time audiobook voice actors and they have never disappointed me. I find their voice very pleasing to listen to and I enjoy they are different interpretations of each of the main girls. The voice acting it’s a 5/5 for me.
Honestly this book feels like the most relatable YA queer romance I have read in a long time. It isn’t often that I can relate so strongly to books about kids in high school but for this one I had no problem. I wasn’t a cheerleader or a football player but I was the mascot and so a lot of this is definitely how the cheerleaders work and operate. Not all of them are bad and the little high school traditions are something that in fact does happen. And if someone who has had a bearded relationship before it does get messy and people end up usually getting hurt in one way or another and as irritating as it felt in the book it is just that irritating in real life. Also the confrontation of the fact that you will lose some of the people that are closes to you because of religious reasons that they don’t want to sort out and learning very validating to read.
This book feels very realistic it’s just a chapter in their lives. I loved the queer characters in this book and they felt well done. Even though, some times I wanted to yell at them just like I was yell at a friend making bad decisions.
The more books I read by Dahlia Adler the happier I am as an adult who didn't have any books like this to read when I was a teenager in high school who just so happened to be coming out!
This book had a lot of potential but at the end of the day it just feel short and was pretty forgettable. I didn’t really care for any of the characters - actually, they both annoyed me quite a bit - and the romance just happened so fast. One of the things I love the most in romance novels and contemporary ya is when a couple has a bit of a longer development before they get together… specially if they were strangers before. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t need to take 80% of the book for them to get together, but I also don’t want them to already date way before 50%. It really makes me feel more of their chemistry and honestly I just love the process of going from strangers to friends to dating.. I would’ve loved to see that with Amber and Jack. I guess I just expected more from the story; I was so excited when I read the synopsis! A female football player and a cheerleader, like, are you kidding me?!!! I wanted to love it so bad, but I guess it just wasn’t exactly what I wanted it to be in the end. I did think Amber and Jack were super cute, I just think the story could’ve been a bit longer with a bit of a better development so that I could have created a better connection to the characters.
But honestly, that’s not to say I wouldn’t recommend the story! I thought the way the author dealt with the subjects like homophobia in this story were written with a lot of care and really well done.
The narration also wasn’t my favorite, and maybe that contributed to my overall mixed feelings. It wasn’t bad at all but it also wasn’t comparable to some of my top favorite audiobooks at all.
Overall, it was a bit disappointing for me, but I would still add it to some of my recommendation lists!
I loved this queer YA romance about an aspiring cheer captain and the new quarterback who turns the school upside down when she turns out to be a girl. It's just such a great, queer story where the high school quarterback gets the girl and the cheerleader learns it's more important to be true to yourself and stick up for what you believe in than maintain the status quo... even if the status quo is being upheld by your best friends. Some of the drama between Jack and Amber felt a bit forced, but I couldn't put it down which I think says more about a story than just about anything else. Thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it and want more stories like this one.
I LOVED this book. It takes classic tropes and issues such as being in the closet and presents them in a way that doesn't feel overdone. I really felt for the characters and there were some good shocking moments. really sweet ending. A great romance
This was such a cute YA queer romance and a fun take on the high school quarterback/cheerleader relationship. Definitely liked how this was a dual POV between Jack and Amber. This book had some really fun moments, but also touched on some very important ones as well. There were times where our MC, Amber, drove me crazy with her choice of actions, but I do recognize that this is a true YA set in high school... that being said, this was a story based around the importance of friendship, standing up for what's right, and not being around to be who you are.
Rating: 4 stars
TW: homophobia
This was a fun and cute sapphic romance. I haven’t really read much sports romances but this was so fun to read. It follows the high school cheerleader Amber and the new quarterback Jack. Although I know absolutely nothing about American football, I still enjoyed the football parts, I even have to say that I learned a thing or two.
The reason why I gave it three stars was because I felt like we didn’t really get to see much from their relationship. They went from not being a thing to making out once, and then they were just dating after that, which isn’t a problem. But I wish we got to see more of the good parts of their relationship. At some parts it felt like it focused more on all the misogynists and homophobes rather than the main characters. Also there was some conflicts in this story that were easily resolvable and avoidable but became a bit dragged out that I really didn’t like.
But other than that it was a cute story, and I would definitely recommend it! the ending was EVERYTHING.

Thank you for this book in exchange for my honest review.
Home Field Advantage sounded promising to me — from its cover to its description, this YA book appeared to be a story I could really get into. I was wrong. Though the book was a quick one, it couldn’t end fast enough for me. I just didn’t connect with the characters or the plot much, sadly.
Home Field Advantage is another cute high school rom-com from Dahlia Adler. If you enjoyed her previous book Cool for the Summer or any books by Sophie Gonzales or Jennifer Dugan, you’ll enjoy Home Field. I found Home Field to be a little on the short side which made the characters a bit lacking in depth. I found Jack’s character (the quarterback) to be much more interesting than Amber's character (the cheerleader) but I feel like I barely got to know either one of them. Even though the book takes place over 9-10 weeks of school, there were only a few days of scenes and I was left very interested in the premise and characters, but wishing for more. Nonetheless, the plot is fresh and even the busiest (or reluctant) teen readers will find Home Field to be a fun escape.
Queer, cute, and true. This audiobook was amazing, I was hooked from the very beginning and continued engaging with the story as it continued.
The characters are adorable, and relatable, even when I couldn’t relate to them in every single way, their emotions and actions were believable and relatable. This facts made me care about them and their story.
This book touches scenarios that maybe not everyone can relate to, but do rise up the issues and how ones actions can affect someone else. The story got me thinking and reflecting about the injustices and bullying the queer community has been passing throw, This book reflects this issues truthfully and in a very personal way.
Loved how everything turned out in this story.
Overall, this story is extremely cute, and would absolutely recommend.
Cute light YA romance between cheerleader and quarterback. Quarterback is a strong teen girl. Both of the girls live with supportive/ progressive families. However they do go to school in small town that is ran by not open minded people.
Cute teen/ya contemporary romance. Amber is a junior and a high school cheerleader and is working on her goal to be team captain next year. New to the school is Jack (Jaclyn) who the football coach has brought in to play quarterback. The school's quarterback died in a car accident and no one wants him replaced by a girl. There is a lot of high school shenanigans/bullying against Jack.
The story benefits form being told from both POVs but Amber is the star. She is the one with who is in a position to influence the cheer team and football squad but it will come at a cost. There is a moment where she thinks "I really like Jack. But I love me." and that feels so real. Do you risk your dreams for someone you've know a few weeks? In a light book a lot of serious topics are covered. But I love the lesson of standing up to your friends and calling them out on their hurtful behavior. The attraction (kissing) between Jack and Amber happens quickly and I wish there were more scenes of them getting to know each other better. Lastly I wondered where the adults were in this world. The coach bears a lot of responsibility for the actions of his team which he willfully ignores. But other adults and parents should have been aware and not left things for teens to resolve. It is nice to hav a sapphic YA where the focus ins't on drinking and hooking up.
I’ve read the book and then got the audio version as well. There are some narrators that I recognize their voices instantly and Natalie Naudus and Lori Prince fall into that category. Prince I know from Satisfaction Guaranteed and all of Robin Alexander’s novels and Naudus narrates One Last Stop and The Heart Principle both of which I have on audio format. They have experience and bring Amber and Jack to life. I enjoyed their narration but did wonder if they were as young sounding as the characters should be. Thank you to NetGalley and OrangeSky Audio for an audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This YA rom-com is a fun story! I can’t believe the queer cheerleader and football quarterback story hadn’t been done yet! But Adler has fun with it, and teens will enjoy that authenticity, just like with Adler’s previous.
Bonus: queer, sex-positive mom in the south!
Why do I like queer sports romance when I could not give a flying fuck about sportsball irl? Who knows. It's the unanswerable question 😂
Anyway, this is freaking adorable and I love it. Cheerleader and football captain in an allocishet book? Absolutely not. Cheerleader and football captain but make it sapphic? Sign me the fuck up.
This is another ya set in a red state with a very ignorant secondary cast of characters. Our two MCs are both out at home and comfortable in their sexualities, at least to the point that they are queer, but not out beyond that. I've read some reviews that complain about this fact but you can't honestly tell me that it isn't relevant, especially with the dire state of affairs here in the US for queer and trans kids, especially in red states. I know we want happy fluffy queer ya, and those exist, but we still need stories that show kids that there is hope and that they can have a healthy happy future even if they live in a homophobic or transphobic area.
You're gonna get mad at this book. You're probably gonna be angry at our MCs and judge their decisions, but I liked that they made mistakes and fucked things up. They're teenagers, of course they don't have every single thing figured out, not many adults do.
I really really liked this one and am pretty obsessed with the cover. Go read it!
Oh and yeah my favorite part of this book is our questioning MC Amber and how she actively mentions how the term polysexual may fit her best. It's never settled and that's 100% okay but I so appreciated seeing that rep on page. I don't think I've ever read a book with on page labeling of polysexual rep and it was awesome to see.
Rep: Polysexual/questioning MC, butch lesbian MC, Latine achillean/questioning SC, BIPOC SC, non binary SC
This book is both fun and heavy. It deals with a lot of heavy topics such as sexism, misogyny, homophobia, toxic masculinity, bullying and death.
I liked Miguel and his friendship with Amber. It was interesting to see their mutually agreed fake relationship and basically be each other’s beards. It was nice for the only two (closeted) queer kids to find each other and be there for one another. He was a good friend and one of the only characters in the book other than Amber who wasn't an asshole to Jack or stuck on the dead former quarterback. I just wish he stood up for Jack sooner.
The romance was pretty insta-love, but it didn’t bother me that much. I just wanted someone to be on Jack’s side and I quickly forgot about that.
I felt to bad for Jack throughout the whole book. She gets to a new school in a conservative town, plays as the only girl on a football team dominated by boys and replacing their dead quarterback, she’s queer, and no one likes her. Pretty much every character on her team and the cheerleader team disliked and bullied her. It got me so mad. Everyone acted as if she personally killed Robbie to take his place. I get everyone was dealing with his loss and grieving, but damn chill out. The guy was a jerk and homophobe, and crashed while drinking and driving. Yet they’re making him out to be a martyr. Stop hating Jack. This girl is innocent.
They couldn’t even believe she was the reason they started winning. They denied it and said the team is just trying harder in Robbie’s honor. It was just upsetting seeing so much misogyny and homophobia. The cheerleaders were all hyped they were getting a new quarterback when they though Jack was a guy, but once they found out she’s a girl they got so nasty. If a guy replaced Robbie, no one would have treated him the way they did Jack. It was really messed up. Luckily the ending wasnt too bad and she got her redemption.
Amber’s mom and Jack’s old friends were supportive at least so that was great. I disliked Cara. She was really annoying. Being homophobic and saying things were sins in the bible, yet going out and sinning herself??
In terms of diversity It was pretty good. I liked seeing a polysexual character. Usually I only see bi or pan. There was a gay side character with a boyfriend, a non binary side character and Amber’s mom is queer. Although none of them played a huge role in the story. There was also one Black character that I remember, but she didn’t get much development unfortunately.
The cover is really pretty.
The narrators did a good job. I liked that it was different narrators for each pov..
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an audio ARC of this book.
Thank you Net Galley for an audio ARC of Home Field Advantage by Dahlia Adler. I really liked this one. It is a YA Romance that follows 2 high school juniors and their romance.
Thanks to NetGalley and OrangeSky Audio for this Audiobook for an honest review.
This book was a fun quick high school F/F romance but it has also talk about heavy topics of death of a classmate, misogyny, homophobia, sexism and more. I had enjoyed the narration by Natalie Naudus & Lori Prince. I thought they did a good job with the dual point of views. Of course this story was predictable. This wasnt a favorite but this was still a decent read.
This story follows two teenagers in Florida. Amber is a closeted teenager, aspiring to become the cheerleading captain the following year. Jack (full name Jaclyn) is the new incoming quarterback, who everyone assumes is male due to her name, and is met with outrage and refusal, leaving her to feel alone, despite Amber's secret kindness toward her.
I really loved this story! Amber and Miguel have such a great friendship and I really love the nuance of their relationship and how the school and town's pressures shape their images. When Miguel wants to come out, Amber is hesitant as she knows it really threatens her chances of becoming cheer captain for her senior year. Amber isn't struggling with her sexuality, it appears, but rather struggling with the societal pressures and outside reactions to her sexuality in her small Florida town.

I am usually a little wary of books that take place in highschool because they tend to feel repetitive to me, but the plot for this one sounded new and interesting to me so I took a chance … and I was not disappointed!
I love a good cheesy homecoming story and the saphics are a major plus and not something I see very much put into a highschool setting.
We follow Amber, a cheerleader who is deep in the closet, and Jack, the highschools replacement quarterback who is on the receiving end of unrelenting hatred from the team for being a girl and also the best player on the team, as they fall together and get themselves entangled in the consuming hierarchy of highschool.
Overall, it was a fun teen romp.
I listened to the audiobook version of this and the voice actors did amazing!
Special thanks to NetGalley and OrangeSky Audio for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
