This book starts off so strong. I was hooked from the first page. The world building seems great so far. I can understand what's happening without too much of an explanation--which is good because then there isn't any info dumping. From the preview, I can tell that this will be a very strong novel full of adventure, emotion, and uniqueness. Again my opinions are just based from the preview and could change once I finish the book when it's out, but this book deserves everything good in the world.

I am glad I read this excerpt and can say I devoured these chapters in less than 30 minutes. Time felt fleeting, and I can definitely see the potential. I wish I had asked for an ARC sooner, but no matter. I am pre-ordering this one!

Pulled in by the cover art and intrigued by the description, I decided to give this excerpt a chance. While I was delighted by the fantastical elements of the story, they get overshadowed by the structural similarities to other books of the genre. The world Berwah is crafting is what really drew me in. The Oceanic setting is incredibly unique to me as a reader and the creatures that populate the pages are enchanting. The maristsags especially caught my interest and I want to learn more about them.
I feel like these elements could really be built on and the story would be much better for it.

However as I mentioned above the storyline is incredibly predictable. The main character possess most of the traits typical of the YA Dystopia heroine: independent, unable to bite her tongue, and bearing the burden of saving her family. I have seen Koral in many other novels under a different name, and while she may come into her own beyond what was given in the excerpt, it was a bit of a letdown to be able to correctly guess exactly what was coming next.

So with all of this in mind, I’d give what I’ve read so far a 3.5, rounded up to 4. I’m curious as to what happens next but worry I’d be able to call every twist and turn.

I only read an excerpt of this book so I didn't know exactly what was going on, but it's easy to read and the synopsis sounds intriguing.

This is a review for the 6 chapter excerpt.

The first six chapters of this have got me so excited to read the book when it comes out! Set in a dystopian world where the population is split into the higher society (Landers) and lower society (Renters). Our protagonist, Koral, is a renter and her family make a living 'as hunters, where they capture and breed ferocious sea animals called Maristags for a chariot race. Times are tough and when her brother is injured, and the last male Maristag escapes, Koral has to make a decision to enter the (probably fatal) chariot race tournament.

This books is shaping up to be fast paced and exciting. It has exciting and dangerous sea creatures (which I love in a book!) and some sort of 'trial' which is also a trope that you can't really go wrong with in my eyes!

I have already pre-ordered this, and will be couniting the days until it comes out!

A very promising start to a new YA Fantasy world. I love anything that has to do with the ocean and I'm instantly sucked into the world and characters. I was lucky enough to receive the full ARC and I can't wait to dive in to the whole book and leave a full review then!!

I’ve been hearing about this book on social media for a while now, so when I saw that this excerpt was available on NetGalley I knew I had to read it. It was interesting and captivating and it only made me more excited to get my hands on the book when it comes out. I can’t wait!

I was really excited to check out Monsters Born and Made because I really loved the cover and the synopsis but the writing style just wasn't for me. It was quite choppy and hard to follow/read. I do think that with a bit more editing this could be really good, but it just wasn't it for me at this point.

Thank you netgalley and the publisher for an excerpt of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Moral and her brother Emrik hunt the dangerous Maristags to breed and sell to the Landers, the elite class. But when their last hint of the season goes awry Koran decides to take their remaining Maristag and enter herself into the Glory Race in hopes of gaining to money her family needs to survive.
Excerpt was the first six chapters and the start of what is sure to be an epic ride with mystical creatures that want to devour at every turn. Truly unique fantasy. Can’t wait to read the rest of this story.

The first chapter doesn't leave you waiting, it plunges right into the action and leaves you wanting more. Existing as a Hunter near the bottom of a societal caste system on a brutal world, teen Koral struggles to find her place. Circumstances out of her control force her to make a life changing decision, one that will certainly put her and possibly her family in danger. With preparations for the Glory Race underway, a race in which higher society members enter to become charioteers in the race for a chance to win glory and riches, Koral takes a chance. The race is deadly and dangerous for many reasons, the biggest reason being the unpredictable bipedal, dragon-like creatures known as the Maristags, who draw the chariots. On the brink of the Glory Race Charioteer registration, Koral's name is smuggled into the final drawing...entry into the Glory Race is something one in her position has never dared to do.

The narration was a little clunky and the MC was unremarkable, not easily differentiated from other YA dystopia/sci-fi/fantasy heroines. Also the world-building is dismal. We keep getting teased with interesting tidbits that are never elaborated on which really sucks.
Will I continue with this book? No, I don't think so.

Fantastic chapter sampler! I love so many of the tropes mentioned and very much looking forward to reading the full story. The cover is gorgeous, beautifully matching the action-packed and intense scenes within. Thanks to Tanvi Berwah, Sourcebooks Fire, and Netgalley for a free sampler in exchange for honest feedback.

This Excerpt takes me to the front lines what it’s like hunting a creature that may take your life but you have no choice due to circumstances. I felt for Koral, she wanted the best for people who couldn’t show her grace. This book explores the complexities surrounding poverty and survival. The creatures came to life on the page and I enjoyed reading the beginning of the book.

I read the excerpt of "Monsters Born and Made" and while I liked the unique premise, there were many times where I was really confused as to what was going on. I was not entirely clear on why the Landers and Renters and Hunters were all at odds. And then there was talk of rebels and other groups rising up. All of this was spliced in with the Glory Race stuff (the main plot of the book I think) but it really got to be a bit much. The monsters surrounding the island were imaginative as well, but I never really got a clear sense of what they looked like in my head (a general idea but not very detailed from the descriptions). I do like it enough to read the full book and see how it all turns out, but not a promising start imo.

Promising concept, intriguing world-building and a powerful narrative voice. I'm very curious to read the rest of this novel.

The premise of this book sounds very interesting, I loved the idea of a „Hunger Games set in a South Asian-inspired world“. However, I don’t think I‘ll be reading the full book.

The worldbuilding and setting are very intriguing and I would certainly love to learn more about this world. I did struggle a bit because you get thrown into the story and right into an action-packed scene, but I had no idea about what was going on. The first few chapters seemed very rushed and fast-paced, which can definitely be a good thing but in this case it did not work for me personally because I would have needed stronger worldbuilding.

The main reason why I most likely won’t be reading this book is the writing style though.

There were so many short sentences. Like this. It makes it hard to read. There is no flow if you write like this.

The overall writing style was beautiful and descriptive, and when there were passages with longer sentences, I really did enjoy it. But the many short sentences linked in a row make it hard for me to read and immerse myself in the story.

I do think the plot has potential and that if you can look past the writing style, this book would be very much enjoyable.

An intriguing excerpt with immersive worldbuilding. As a Hunger Games fan, I'll definitely be interested in seeing where the rest of the story goes and rooting for Koral.

I loved this excerpt and I am super excited for Monsters Born and Made to be released in September! It is such an intriguing book and I can already tell that I will love it. I have had this on my TBR since I first saw it on Instagram so thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the excerpt!

After reading this excerpt I'm really interested in knowing more about the characters and super invested in the world building! I love dystopian novels (hello I was obsessed with The Hunger Games) so this book is one of my most anticipated reads this year and I have to say the beginning is very promising!! Can't wait to have the whole book in my hands.
