A good read but the mothers behaviour didn’t really seem to make sense at times. Overall I enjoyed it though. Recommended.
My Darling Daughter by J.P. Delaney was an enjoyable read however, I did find it a bit unrealistic with some questionable decisions by Susie and Gabe. To me, this was more of a family drama than a thriller so I’m sure people that enjoy that genre will love this.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
This book had an interesting premise, and I enjoyed the darker side of the storyline which was where all the twists came from but I found the mother's atttitude and reactions unrealisitc and annoying, so I couldnt really get lost in the story
After reading all the previous books by the author and liking all but one of the books, this one sounded really good and I was really excited.
However i couldn't get into it at all, I made it about halfway before giving up. I am definitely wanting to retry to read because I'm not sure of it was me being in the wrong mood for the book at the time
Thank you Quercus and Netgalley for the ARC
I struggled with this book, unlike any of the other JP Delaney books I've read previously.
There was something which just didn't gel for me and the character of Anna/Sky just annoyed me.
I liked the characters of Susie and Gabe though and really felt for them.
Although I read this in 2 days, because I really wanted to know what happened for me the book was just ok.
I would have liked some real twists and turns rather than just a family drama - thriller this is not.
Hence I can only give this 3 stars
Another great read from Delaney. Great storyline that got me hooked from the beginning. Fast paced, dark and riveting. Its really well written with good strong characters that grew as it went along.
Definitely recommended.
Thank you Netgalley.
Another great book by JP Delaney. This author is fast becoming a firm favourite and I watch out for the next book published with impatience!
This book was so well written I could not put it down, very tense at times but poignant moments also.
Wow wow wow!! This book was amazing! It was so well written and edited. I must admit I did not like any of the characters and really wanted to scream at Susie, but I did have some sympathy for them all, particularly Sky. I would 100% recommend this.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC.
After reading J P Delaney books before I was looking forward to this but have to say I was a little disappointed. Some parts were so far fetched and unbelievable and the characters were awful in some parts as well as extremely frustrating.
Susie Jukes is 20 years old when she gives up her baby for adoption. A backing singer on tour is not the job to have a baby. Fifteen years later and happily married to Gabe, Sky, now Anna, reaches out to her birth mother with terrible tales of the life she is being forced to live. Blinded by mothers love and lack of having any children since Anna, Susie is on a mission to right the wrongs of the life her daughter has been subjected to. But is Anna really telling the truth and how far will she go to get what she wants?
The way Susie and Gabe take in, and on, Anna and her problems without a second thought or question is just strange to me. I understand the guilt Susie must be feeling but it just didn't feel right. No spoilers but after all that happens, and they continue to take her back, and especially at the end, I found it a bit much.
Thank you to Netgalley for having an advanced copy of this novel. Being a big fan of JP Delaney I was delighted to have an advanced copy. The story evolves around a husband and wife who have a past daughter turn up on their doorstep. The story is extremely believable and realistic, I would recommend to other serial readers.
This was okay! I was really intrigued by the premise and I've enjoyed other books by JP Delaney so was excited to dive in. This felt more like an exploration of some big topics, including drug abuse, behavioural therapies and adoption, rather than any sort of thriller. There were a few twisty moments but nothing that I wasn't really expecting (and nothing like other books by Delaney) and I'd class it as a family drama more than anything. The story alternates between the three main characters, so I felt like there weren't any surprises because I knew what everyone was thinking?! Definitely not a bad book at all, just not particularly memorable.
Be careful what you wish for, because you might just end up with the world's most self-absorbed child. There were so many emotions running through me while reading this book. alternating between feeling sorry for the position the characters were in, to being frustrated with their stupidity, annoyed at their action or inaction... I can definitely say I'll remember this read,
I’ve just binge read all of Delaney’s books again and forgot how amazing they are. This is no different. I love the way this writer gets into a character so well you will not know if it’s a male or female writer which sometimes is so obvious and when you aren’t thinking about WHO is writing this then you’re IN it. In my top 5 books ever and definitely favourite this year.
This was an okay read it kept me entertained for a few hours and I wanted to see how it all panned out.
It was such an interesting premise though and very well written and good character development etc I just couldnt get into it as much as I like this author's other books - so I suppose that is a compliment.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down.
Certainly recommended!
This book was just ok, nothing memorable.
Only the first half of the book was engaging, the rest failed to hold my attention.
I would've loved to have some twits and turns thrown in there but this read more as a family drama than a twisty kind of thriller; not my cup of tea.
Susie and Gabe found each other when they were at their lowest low. They have been together and happily married ever since, allowing each other a fresh start and a new beginning. When Skye, Susie daughter that was taken away from her by social services turns up, they try to move forward as a family of three. Unbeknown to them they are all in for a rough ride.
I have to admit I wasn’t blown away by this book. J.P.Delaney usually offers up such detailed easy reading page turners and sadly this was not quiet the same somehow. The chapters are super short making for an easy and quick read but it was lacking that usually JP magic. There were glimpses of it towards the end but it was all to late by then. The plot itself was very clever - deception, accusations and alls fair in love and war.
Dysfunctional family dynamics is the best way I can sum up this book that goes to some dark places. Very fast paced with the chapters moving between the three main characters points of view, it was an ok read with some good twist and some over the top.
3 stars. Moments of greatness but lots of cliches. Loved the fast paced short chapters but I guess from the 2nd chapter the inevitable end.
This is a gripping psychological thriller, it had me wondering what was happening throughout. Susie is a singer with a very handsome husband Gabe. She is contacted out of the blue by her daughter, Anna, that she put up for adoption as a baby.
I enjoyed the book, but I did find myself very frustrated at Susie’s naivety and how she defended Anna against Gabe.
3 stars.
