This book is made up of highly detailed comic or graphic novel illustrations with small text boxes and expressive font. The story is mainly told by the images rather than the text, making it accessible for readers of all ages as there is very little text that needs to be decoded and the story can be told by looking at the pictures. Many children are drawn to comics and graphic novels because they are more accessible than higher level text, which is a great stepping stone for beginning and struggling readers, and I think this book would be no exception! I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 4-10 range. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!
This was such a funny and entertaining read! It describes a group of young animals playing in a long wite the residing neighbour gets irritated and grumpy with their noises. I really liked how the book ended, with all of them coordinating finally. The book was short and the art was also very cute!
Thank you NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for presenting me with an ARC of this book in exchange of a honest review.
ARC Copy...like the rest of the series, it was a warm, funny and delightful slice of life read. I do like that nature is showcased, minimal dialogue/wordless experience, and the animal folks do feel grounded in their body language and expressions.
Review to come on June 19th on blog/goodreads/etc.
I received this book from the publisher/Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I was absolutely excited when I saw a new book in the Beneath The Trees series pop up! Without even looking at the blurb I clicked the Read Now button. Smashed it even. I needed this book! And also started to immediately read it.
And this was just as fun as the first book about the fox and his scarf! This time no foxes, nor snow. Oh no, we are now in the summer months. Hot months. And our MC? A grumpy old owl living in a tree next to a cool pond. Which is attracting a lot of the kids from nearby. Splashing. Ball throwing. Giggling. Screaming. In the mean time our owl? He just wants to read his book. To read and relax. To enjoy the time off. While he was grumpy... I knew that he would change. I don't know. Maybe I just read too many books featuring grumpy characters, but I just had a feeling that given time.. he would do something fun. Something that would show him that the kids mean no harm and that even when you are old you are never too old to play! I had a giggle during that first night when he gave things a test ride. I was just cheering and rooting for him. Do more! You can do it! See it is fun!
The ending made me smile. It was just the perfect ending and I was happy with both my grumpy men. Oh, didn't I mention it? There is another grumpy man. A toad who lives just across from the pond and who is the kind of guy who will go: "Get off me lawn!" XD.
The story is supershort, but I don't think it should have been any longer, because that wouldn't have worked. Now it was perfect.
The art by Dav was once again very fun, I just love his style. His art is the kind that you would hang up on the walls. It is just so pretty with details everywhere.
All in all, highly recommended!
This has a really lovely message and wonderful illustrations.
My daughter thought it was funny and loved the pictures as well.
Thank you Netgalley for the read now opportunity
Beneath the Trees: A Fine Summer is a beautiful story set in the summertime. Mr. Owl is a cranky old owl who discovers that maybe he can some fun, too! Teachers could use Mr. Owl's story to teach young students about compromise and acceptance and growth. I can also see teachers using the other accompanying books to teach students about different seasons during science.
With whimsical pictures and classic vibes, Beneath the Trees: A Fine Summer would be a wonderful addition to any home, classroom, or school library. Thank you NetGalley and Magnetic Press for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
After the Autumn and the Winter book, now Summer is here, the third in Dav's cartoon series. I have read all of them: each with a different colour palette and different characters from the same forest.
We all had a grumpy neighbour at some point in our life, so it's easy to relate to this story whether you are a kid or a parent. A good lesson on tolerance, compromise and the joy of team play.
Thank you NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for an Advance Review Copy.
Beneath the Trees is a nice comic style book, with illustrations that remind me of old Disney cartoons. A cranky old owl gets mad at the kids playing ball outside his home, but he is changed when he starts playing too! I liked all the different animal characters, and all the "sound words". Great for bedtime!
