I felt that this book lacked a story. While not every great book, especially for kids, needs a great story, this one felt as though nothing was happening at all. There were no lessons to be gained, either.
This is an adorable book about Herbert sliding and having the time of his life. I think kids will definitely like this book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Astra Publishing House, Hippo Park for a free digital copy.
A simple but cute book about the power of imagination to turn simple play into a magical adventure.
Rilla Alexander creates a delightfully frolicking tale that takes a child through the steps of what may be the unfamiliar activity of going down a slide and turns it into great imaginative play. The illustrations are adorable and enmesh you in the story. This book is great for exposing children to the concept of sequencing as well as numbers when Herbert counts down. It also showcases the need for turn-taking. All in all, a wonderful story that I can’t wait to share at my library’s storytime.
I thought that this was an enjoyable book
The story was easy to follow and it was fun to read with my daughter
She thought it was really fun and loved being able to help – she is now 5 and has recently learnt to read so she was able to read the book to me and it was lovely
It is four stars from me for this one – highly recommended!
This one tells the story of Herbert who is quite literally obsessed with the slide at the playground. Herbert uses his imagination as he goes down the slide time and time again, never getting impatient or bored, and imagines he is sliding into a deep purple see while going down, and climbing up a steep mountain while going up the ladder to ride once more. This one reminds us of the joy of childhood, as well as the fact that one single toy or place of play is more than enough for us to experience endless adventures, when we put our imagination to the test.
Cute illustrated book about taking turns. Even though Herbert was having a fun time on the slide he still had to get off in a timely manner to allow his sister and others to go down.
Herbert is an adorable little hippopotamus who enjoys playing on the slide at Hippo Park. Herbert loves everything about the slide from climbing the ladder, getting into seated position, pushing his toys down, and of course the blissful feeling of actually sliding down the slide. There is some nice use of onomatopoeia to describe the sounds and feeling while sliding. As Herbert is enjoying his time on the slide, he slips into the depths of his imagination and has a delightful adventure. When his sister comes to join the fun, he is quick to share and take turns with her. This sounds like just a great day at the park and even I want to go have on the slide right now.
This was a cute book that little ones should enjoying listening to and looking at the magical illustrations.
This picture book tells the story of a hippo who enjoys his time on a slide. Pages include 1-3 short lines of text, usually black text on light coloured backgrounds. The concept and content is very easy to follow and there is some expressive text like "chug chug chug" to add colour and interest to the page. The illustrations are very simple and coloured in a crayon texture, appearing to be done by a child almost. It is a simple, colourful book that I think young children will enjoy. I would recommend this book to parents of children in the age 3-5 range. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is a simple relatable story about an adorable little hippo named Herbert. He loves to go to the playground with his toys and enjoys copious adventures on the park's slide. He loves climbing up the ladder, positioning himself to launch and using his favourite teddy for a test run. His imagination kicks into gear and he envisions himself and his teddy diving into a deep purple sea. But wait! Now he imagines he is a truck climbing up, up, up a mountain. Oh what wonderful fun he has every single visit!
The "Hippo Park Pals" mini picture books are sure to delight preschoolers. The illustrations are very colourful and kid-friendly and greatly enrich the storyline. I highly recommend this book.
Herbert on the Slide is about a cute purple hippo named Herbert who loves to go down the slide. It's a whole process but he enjoys every minute of it and lets his imagination take him on little adventures while climbing up and sliding down.
This book would be great to help young students practice using their imagination, just like Herbert! I think that the book would've benefitted from a bit more since there were only about two different imagination scenarios, or even, Herbert and his sister could've collaborated together on a slide adventure! Either way, young readers will enjoy this story about Herbert on the slide and make connections as well. Thank you NetGalley and Astra Publishing House for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
Herbert on the Slide was a sweet simple story of a hippo who likes to play with his toys on the playground. Some of the best charm of this book though came from its illustrations. The pictures look as if the book was colored by a small child, as the illustrator colored the pictures like a coloring book. It was such a sweet detail in a book for small children. My little boy loves going to the park and going down the slide, so this book was a treat for him!
