A take on the unique stories of two timelines happening. Where the reader follows both the grandmother and the granddaughter while figuring out the storylines. It's a sweet historical fiction book mixed with contemporary lit and I love that.
Two women set sail for Australia, bound by a terrible truth. But only one will make it off the ship.
England, 1919: Rose and Ivy board a ship bound for Australia.
One is travelling there to marry a man she has never met.
One is destined never to arrive.
Australia, 2016: Amongst her late-grandmother's possessions, Molly uncovers a photograph of two girls dressed in First World War nurses' uniforms, labelled 'Rose and Ivy 1917', and a letter from her grandmother, asking her to find out what happened to her own mother, Rose, who disappeared in the 1960s.
Compelled to carry out her grandmother's last wish, Molly embarks on a journey to England to unravel the mystery of the two girls whose photograph promised they'd be 'together forever' . . . Such a well crafted novel, compelling enough to pull you through and very quick read. I enjoyed it so much from the first page till the end. A good story like this needs a quiet afternoon, a sofa and a warm blanket.
Set over dual timelines and dual continents this is an incredibly moving story of two women. When Molly finds a photograph it leads her on an incredible journey to find the one of the women on the photo.
Beautifully written the books draws you in from the start. Its very emotional as the story moves from the different timelines. I really enjoyed this book.
Well written with a compelling storyline with a dual timeline and well developed characters that I loved. I also loved the two settings within the book. I love historical fiction and this was no exception, it was gripping and emotive.
I love a dual time line novel. Partly, because I am fascinated by the connection that the present has with the past, and also because I think it is exceptionally difficult to pull off successfully. Julie Brooks has achieved this incredibly well, and I enjoyed reading every word of this book very much.
Furthermore, it is a book of secrets and is full of twists and turns, many of which I had not anticipated. It made for an interesting and intriguing reading experience as little by little the secrets of the past are revealed.
The characters were all well portrayed, and as an amateur genealogist myself, I could identify with Molly who was attempting to join the dots between herself and her ancestors. Ivy, whose story was set in the earlier time frame was a wonderful character and I thoroughly enjoyed reading how the author developed her character.
This was an excellent book. I really enjoyed reading it. I loved how it was a dual timeline book that had some brilliant twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. The medium pace of this book really suited the relaxed feel of historical fiction. I thought it was brilliant that it was set in both rural England and Australia. I thought the characters development was brilliant especially with the rose and ivy. I really enjoyed despising Rose. I found myself really willing ivy on as I really got emotionally involved with the story.
As the book progress I found myself engrossed in the story and was really turning the pages faster and faster.
I couldn't predict the ending and it was rather shocking. I must say the final lines of this book made me wonder.
I recommend this book to all historical fiction fans who love dual timelines and story's that just keep you guessing. Also those who love characters who you love to hate.
So much praise goes out to the author and publishers for creating this wonderful roller coaster ride that certainly had me at the edge of my seat.

I do like a dual timeline story and I did enjoy this book. I must admit I had worked out most of the storyline earlier, although there were one or two surprises. I was interested to see how present day Molly would discover what had happened years ago. As well as the mystery of Rose and Ivy, there was also the personal story of Molly and her secret. To a certain extent I could understand Ivy’s resentment of the Luscombe family but surely living in the time she did, she must have realised that things couldn’t be different. This was an entertaining read and all questions are answered by the end. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed reading Julie Brook's debut darkly gripped dual time novel, The secrets of Bridgewater bay. This is a well researched historical fiction book with a prologue that starts off mysteriously. The author sets the plot for the novel mostly at the two places, the coastline of South West Victoria and wild coastline of North Devon taking place in 20th century and one hundred years later.
I found the character Molly very interesting, her cleverness to solve a problem which happened in her family at dual timelines, spanning generations which leaves molly gripped and feeling worse.
England 1919: Two women, Rose and Ivy set sail for Australia, bound by a terrible truth. But only one will make it off the ship. Ivy died with Spanish flu enroute Colombo. In 1963, Rose is missing, feared to have drowned at Bridgewater bay.
Australia 2016: Molly discovers an envelope with an old photograph in her late Grandmother - Nan's possessions where two young women stood shoulder to shoulder, wearing old fashioned uniforms, probably First World War uniforms of British Vad nurses. Behind the photographs word penned in faded blue on the rear 'Rose and Ivy' 1917, 'Together forever.'
Molly wasn't a historian but a teacher. Molly travels to London having insisted by her late Grandmother, where her sister Daisy lives and Molly discovers her first clue at her Grand mother Nan's House to the mysterious disappearance of her great grandmother - Rose Turner.
This story that keeps the reader to intrigue till the end. There is betrayal, redemption, Jealousy and family secrets. The ending is sad and shocking.
Thanks to Julie Brooks, Publisher Headline Review and NetGalley for an Advance Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review
I absolutely adore historical fiction and this drew me in , especially the cover! If I saw this book in a book shop it would make me pick it up and read the back immediately,
It was a well thought out story that I enjoyed.
This was a lovely book. I loved the dual time line. The story unfurled slowly but steadily and although it dragged a little in the middle it picked up again after that and got much more interesting. The ending surprised me but, in a good way. I highly recommend this book as it will sweep you away into another era. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
It took me a while to get into the story of this book, but once it got going, thinks really got going!
It's a dual timeline - Rose and Ivy during the war and Molly in real time. The historical timeline is what drew me into the story finally, the girls' lives are not what I expected. It's a great twisty storyline that will keep you interested. Some of Molly's storyline repeats a bit much and seems to drag a bit, but it all ties together in the end.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.
