read by the author? i am always interested and this did not dissapoint. I love tom and this was so well narrated and most important: FUNNY
I love Tom Segura! He’s so funny and feels like an old friend during his stand ups and this was no different. He is always so hilarious.
I'm not one for non-fiction books, but when I saw Tom Segura was coming out with a book I knew he'd be the exception. I was lucky enough to be approved for an advanced copy of both the e-book and audiobook, which I am extremely grateful for. For the last five years I've been a big fan of his stand up and within the last two years, a fan of YMH. With that being said, if you are a fan of either or both of those things this book is right up your alley. Each chapter is its own little essay that is an easy read and above all else, hilarious. I highly doubt you'd expect anything less coming from Tom. Besides being outrageously funny, there are many heartfelt moments that I feel we don't see too often with comedians. This book and audiobook were incredibly well done and I'm extremely thankful to have been given the chance to read and listen to it. Stay high and tight, mommies.
I was so excited to see that NetGalley is now offering audiobooks for readers to review. I always prefer listening to an author read his or her memoir, if the audiobook is available.
And I couldn’t be happier that my first audiobook to review from NetGalley is I’d Like To Play Alone Please by Tom Segura. My husband and I love Tom Segura and consider him one of our favorite comedians. Pre-Covid, I got tickets to one of his shows as a Christmas present for my husband.
This book is incredibly funny, but also gives some insight and background to Tom’s life and career. Some of the essays are longer versions of some of his jokes, and some essays are totally new. I had no idea he wanted to pursue a college football career or that he self-produced his first album. And the added benefit of the audiobook is getting to hear his impressions of the voices of different people in his life, like his parents. The only thing I missed out on with the audiobook is the PDF accompaniment with photos and other gems.
I would definitely recommend this for anyone who is a fan, or who enjoys smart comedy. Now I’m thinking about subscribing to his podcast for even more Tom Segura.
Thank you to NetGalley, Hatchette Audio, and Tom Segura for an advance copy of this funny audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I didn't know much about Tom Segura when I requested this one but I cannot wait to watch some of his standup after finishing this one! I loved the fun essays and the stories he told us. Some may think a few of these stories are crass, but I found them hilarious and weirdly endearing. I also loved that Tom was the narrator for this one- it made me feel like I was sitting with him having a conversation.
4.5 stars!
Tom Segura has always been my comedian to listen to on a road trip. We used to put on Pandora (this is 2012) and find the "Comedy" radio channel. I discovered Tom, John Mulaney and Bill Burr. Since then I've sought out so much of his material, this audiobook was no different.
Tom can say things no one else can because he does not care. His lack of care seems to be wanting to give others permission to not care as well, to let it all out and say your controversial thoughts. Tom lets all his thoughts run amuck and it's fun to participate, but at no point did I want to head out into the streets with it. Listening to this while running some errands, I made sure to keep my windows rolled up, just in case. Which is generally a suggestion when listening to his comedy, "just in case." Sure, there were some cringy moments but that's also his shtick, that's his podcasts, his general tone. It's all about being uncomfortable but getting to laugh at those moments.
The last story about Mike Tyson was a bit of a letdown. Happy if Mike Tyson has found some peace and tranquility but his "fists that have ruined men's careers" have also slammed themselves into the bodies of women. There was a bit of fawning and acclaim for a man who has abused multiple people in his life, too much in my opinion. The story was also boring, which is not how you want to end a book. Might be better in paper form but audiobook form took the wind right out of some mighty sails.
This was a good narrated book since it was done by the author. There were definitely laugh out loud parts and other parts were pretty serious. I did enjoy it, especially because I knew very little about him!
i LOVED this series of essays from Tom.
I received an audiobook ARC and i must say, having Tom read his own stories and add his personality made the experience all the better! My only (non) complaint is that there wasn't 5 minutes at the end of just Tom laughing.
I feel like these stories were a nice blend of comedy plus real issues and insight into Tom's life. It definitely makes him even more approachable as a human, if that is possible.
I'll start this off by saying I'm a fan of Tom Segura's standup comedy. I was lucky enough to see him perform live earlier this year, in fact. That said, a lot of his writing in this book is in the same vein as a comic: irreverent, a little crude at times, and sometimes flat out unwholesome. BUT, the man is hilarious and in this short book of essays, little slices of Tom's life, we get his story. Readers get a glimpse of Tom's family history and who he is as a person, as a parent, and now as a celebrated and successful comic. I am grateful to Netgalley and the publisher, Grand Central Publishing, as well as Hachette Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook - and I highly recommend listening to audiobooks especially when the author narrates!
🌟🌟🌟💫
This collection of essays/observations felt like it was pulled out from Segura's stand-ups from various years.
While hilarious, and given he read his own book, he still seemed tickled pink, that kept it from getting stale.
My fave was the Mike Tyson one.
Btw, I picked this up as I love stuff written by comedians.
I like listening to memoirs and I enjoy hearing about how comedians got their start. These books only work if the author reads his work, as Segura does. He's a great storyteller, which is no great surprise since he is a standup comedian, and podcaster, I discovered. This is a really well-done look into the life of someone whom I knew very little about. I enjoyed listening to it a lot.
Very funny! It’s like listening to a comedy special. This book is a funny selection of essays read by the author. Highly recommend for a road trip!
I LOVED this book! It had me laughing from the beginning! I read the physical copy first and as I was reading I could only imagine reading it in Toms voice and then to hear him read it was like a cherry on top. I loved hearing how he described his parents because I think it is so relatable and honest!
A collection of essays written by comedian, Tom Segura. I laughed out loud quite often and I recommend this to anyone who likes comedy or Tom Segura. He also has 2 podcasts and 3 NetFlix specials. He is, in a word, hysterical. He is also touring this summer and I wish I had tickets to see him. If you get the chance, go see him. Or watch Netflix. But definitely read this book of brilliant essays. He is too funny! This audio version is read by the author himself.
*Special thanks to NetGalley and Hachette Audio for an early copy of this audiobook.*
This was funny, but my problem with it is what I feel with most comedian books, which is that a lot of it is recycled from standup bits. Not all of it, though, and some is from podcast appearances - something more forgivable because if you listen to someone on enough podcasts, they are going to mention a lot of stories that they feel are worth telling. Still, this made me laugh several times, especially at things I thought wouldn't be funny but Tom's word choice and delivery makes it hysterical- like seeing Christopher Llyod picking his nose on a flight. Fans of Tom Segura will definitely appreciate this book, I'm not sure if it's a good book for people unfamiliar with Tom's humor to try.
This book was HILARIOUS. I laughed so hard. Tom Segura is raunchy, inappropriate and so funny. He's had a lot of celebrity encounters which were interesting to hear about. I also totally related to his parenting stories with young kids. He also talked about his parents with so much love and humor. This was a fun one. Listened in one sitting!
Thanks to NetGalley, Hachette Audio and Grand Central Publishing for the audiobook and printed copy of this book.
I love reading books that give me insight into someone that I wouldn't have had before. The stories about Tom's life, views and things that have happened to him to shape the comic and person he is today were great.
I really loved the comedian's book of essays, as they depict his childhood, his fatherhood, etc. I loved each story and how funny but also touching they could be at times, like when he discusses his father. A must-read for any comedy fan! Also enjoyed the narration
