I normally really enjoy reading books about wine. The growing process, the processing, the tasting, everything wine related. I have read and reviewed many books on the subject.
That being said, I did not enjoy this book at all. It just seemed disjointed, and unfortunately uninteresting. I don't feel that I learned anything from it.
I know how hard it is to write a book, and really do not want to punish the author with a bad review. After all, just because it was not for me, others might really enjoy the book. Therefore, I am not going to leave this review on any of my usual review sites. I would encourage the author to have a good look at his book, and perhaps do a rewrite.
Sorry!
Brian Freedman's "Crushed" is very much an in-the-weeds book about the wine and spirits industry. Over the course of several chapters, Freedman interviews wine and spirit producers from around the world to explore how climate change has affected their business and ability to continue existing.
Admittedly, I didn't get very far in this book because it seemed to drone on. The chapter on Israeli wines is particularly long and repetitive. The book seems moderately disjointed and a way for the author to excuse traveling and maybe entertaining himself during his day job that dried up during the pandemic. It was clearly written hastily and doesn't capture as much of the emotional side of wine and spirit production as I would have liked or expected.
