This is not your typical ABC book, nor is it a cash grab tied to Rainbow Capitalism. ABC Pride by Dr. Elly Barnes and Louie Stowell sets age-appropriate definitions for complex topics like equity, acceptance, gender, and human rights. This may be a children's book but frankly, there are plenty of adults who I think could benefit from the clear, matter-of-fact messaging of this well-illustrated and well-written book. Dr. Barnes in particular is the founder and CEO of a nonprofit that focuses on teacher training and resource programs focused on inclusion, LGBTQIA rights, and social justice. She is a leading global expert who I would absolutely trust to guide the next generation.
Additionally, this book has guided discussion points for parents and their kids to talk about the topics defined in this book. Absolutely preordering a whole stack of these to gift to all my new mama friends.
ABC Pride
5 Stars
I absolutely love this book and was so happy to read ABC Pride. This was a much needed book when my children were younger and is definitely needed in today’s society. Each word chosen fits well. The illustrations are bright, colorful and with diverse characters. I adored the section with questions & discussion. My youngest daughter has ADHD, and she learns better with movement while talking. I appreciate this book acknowledging that each child learns differently.
This is a great book for younger children with a little growing room for deeper conversations in the future. I'd highly recommend this book and plan to buy a copy for my personal library.
Thank you, NetGalley and DK Children, for providing me with a digital ARC for an honest review.
Loved this ABC book! The words chosen fit perfectly and the illustrations were bright, colorful and engaging. This book is ideal for younger children. Highly recommend!
Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book.
Love love love this book!!!! Such an amazing book that is definitely needed in today’s society!! I will definitely buy this once it comes out!!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for allowing me to receive an arc in exchange for my honest review- all thoughts and opinions are my own!
Beautiful images, beautiful book! Loved it and promptly pre ordered two copies!
The colors where beautiful and eye catching. The illustrations were fun, creative, and diverse. Lovely concept of teaching love and letters together. Some of the descriptions seemed a little long for a children’s book but it left for a clear message. Young readers will be captivate by the colors.
I’d like to start this off by saying the inclusivity was very up to and exceeded my expectations. We see people from all walks of life illustrated in, ‘ABC Pride’.
The illustrations were very vibrant and full of life and color. I even spotted a walking and hearing aid on a younger person.
I think they covered a lot both in illustrations and the actual book itself. The mention of Xer and Wigs was certainly something unexpected but unbelievably appreciated none the less.
I’m typically very cautious on what books to have around my son. I’d argue that’s purely due to the fact that a lot of children’s books put emphasis on manners, god and respect for your elders — all of which I don’t teach. However this book is something I not only approve of but I’m so excited to see exists. It brings tears to my eyes to see so much acceptance and inclusivity in such a simple way for children.
This is absolutely a tool all parents should have and share with their families and I’m grateful to have sampled it for free beforehand and hopefully helped some hesitant parents out there make a decision.
5/5 stars, this book is absolutely something we will be purchasing for the next upcoming holiday and included in our weekly rotation of books.
I loved this short, easy to read, book! ABC Pride by Elly Barnes and Louie Stowell is a great way to explain LGBTQ+ inclusion and Pride to younger children!
Toddler tested, Mother approved! My daughter really enjoyed scrolling through this picture book. She'd recite the letter then tell me all the colors she'd see and ask her favorite phrase "whats that?" She's two.
This book was so colorful and fun to read. The pages are informative but presented in very easy concepts for children (and adults) to understand. This is an excellent way to begin conversations with your children.
Thank you NetGalley and DK publishing for let me read this book in exchange for my honest review!
This book was super cute, and I think a great way to get kids involved and knowledgable about the LGBTQIA+ community, and make it less strange and alienated.
I really loved the simple art style of this book. The imitations were simple yet had a lot of bright colors and cute characters. I would say this book is good for middle elementary and onward. Of course, any age child could be read this book but might not comprehend the meaning of some things because the vocabulary is not for a young child (ie words like acceptance, and stereotypes)
This was so cute! Super wholesome and the words used for each letter did a great job at providing a broad overview of different aspects of the queer community. It discussed all the letters in the LGBTQIA+ acronym and did so in a way that broke down the concepts in an age-appropriate and easily digestible way. I definitely recommend this for parents or librarians alike.
I read this book with my twins who are almost six they loved the illustrations and trying to sound out the larger words such as "celebrate". Since this was an ebook ARC it was a little harder to access but that was more of a function of the APP than the content of the book, I can't wait to see the book in a printed format we'll definitely be adding it to our library.
ABC Pride is a very bright, fun book, with LGBT words for each letter of the alphabet! I loved the simple explanations for each word and the inclusivity of the choice of words. This is a great book for young children!
This was so cute!! I loved the diversity in this book, not only sexuality, gender and race but there are also mobility aids! I loved seeing canes, crutches and hearing aids. I would 100% buy this for a friend or family member with a child, this was a great little book with beautiful illustrations
A wonderfully illustrated ABCs of Pride! A very good introduction to the basics of Pride and the LGBTQIA+ community. I liked that it was inclusive of all kinds of queer identities and even making a point to say it's okay to be you, however you are most comfortable, and that's what is important.
Thank you to Net Galley for making this book available in exchange for an honest review!
I loved this book and can't wait to read it with my second grader. Yes, he's maybe a tad older than the target audience but I think he'll still get a lot out of it and the amount of text is perfect for him to practice reading aloud.
The illustrations are cute and draw you in, and they're very diverse and inclusive! I was impressed with the way the illustrations feature a lot of racial diversity and a wide range of disabilities along with the LGBT+ diversity. Kudos to the illustrator because I don't think I've seen a more inclusive, diverse children's book.
I love the words that were chosen and the simple, easy-to-understand way they were each explained. For something that seems simple on the surface, there's a lot of thought that went into this book. I can already tell it will spark some reflection and thought in my kiddo.
*Thanks to NetGalley and DK Children for providing an e-arc for review.
A cute ABC book relating to pride terms! I love this idea and the execution of the book was great too.
Got an eArc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I found an ABC book I would PROVIDE to elementary students (heck, I would even to Kindergartens) if I were a teacher. This would have been comforting and easy for people (especially kids) who felt lost because they are born into thinking there are only two genders and one sexuality.
Y'all matter. You are loved. You are valid. You belong.
I love the illustrations and the colour palette. Kids would love this book.
A cute and fun ABC book about about Pride. Each letter has a straightforward, simple example for each word. As some concepts like "equity" might be harder for toddlers to understand, preschool and up would be the best audience. I love the colorful, adorable illustrations. This would make an excellent gift for a child or expecting parents!
Thank you DK and NetGalley for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
