This is my first book to read by this author but I cannot wait to read more by them! This is such a uniquely written story that you will find yourself thinking about long after you finish it. Highly recommend!!
Why I Decided to Read This:
This cover looks amazing right? I thought so too.
Plot:
Meren is her sisters body double. However, when someone goes to kidnap the upcoming queen, they accidentally kidnap Meren instead. This was such an interesting plot. I've seen variations of this book before; however, I've never seen the body double come into play for a fantasy world.
Brief Thoughts:
I did like this book. I thought the beginning seemed to be written more for younger teens; however, the ending seemed more for older teens. So, it was a little confusing for me on what age group it would be for as I was reading. I can definitely see potential for this series, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
Characters:
First, we have Meren, who is Tara's twin sister and body double. She doesn't really get her own life because she always has to pretend to be someone else, which is shown throughout the book. Reven is a very interesting character. He believes he is evil even though he does a lot of good things, and you can definitely see his struggle throughout the story.
Writing Style:
This book was written in first person from Meren's POV. As I mentioned above, it seemed like it was written for younger teens; however, it definitely has parts that are meant only for older teens to read.
Likes:
- Meren: I liked her character. I saw her struggles and really liked how she became her own person who did things that she wanted to do because she felt it was right even if it wasn't the easy way out.
- Plot: I really liked the plot of this book. I think it kind of reminded me of The Kiss of Deception, which I loved.
Dislikes:
- The World Building: I wish there would have been a little more world building in the beginning of the story. All the different powers and what people were was just a little confusing for me.
- Slow Paced: The beginning of the book was a little too slow paced for me. It wasn't really until a little after the halfway point that it began to pick up for me.
- The Romance: Don't get me wrong. I loved the romance. I just wish I would have gotten a little more from the characters to show how they were falling for each other.
Recommendation:
I do recommend this book if you love a good YA fantasy. I think this is a perfect read for fans of The Mortal Instruments series and The Remnant Chronicles.
What’s in This Book & Trigger Warnings:
- Kidnapping
- Death
- Supernatural Powers
- Open Door Romance
- Forced Proximity
- Love Triangle
This is a beautiful YA Fantasy read with rich world building, complex and well-developed characters, and a PG slow-burn romance. So well done, this gets all the stars! Highly recommended!
This brand new series by Abigail Owen is a must read!! A unique tale of Kings and Queens that takes your imagination to new highs!! This book has an unusual blend of characters, each with a special quality that makes them unique.
Meren wishes for a new life. One filled with laughter, companionship, friendship and love. One where she will not spend her life hiding away, playing a part. One where she doesn't have to hide who she is. One that will not be lonely.
Meren's role in life has been planned since the day she was born. Twin to the queen of Aryd. Playing the role of her twin's body double in all things that matter. It is a role that she wishes she could change, but is also proud to play in it.

Meren begins on a forced journey that will show her things she thought were not possible. But her travels will not be easy an the path is not clear. Can Meren figure out how to save Aryd and everyone else that matters to her.
This book was a non-stop adventure from the very beginning pages. It was an exciting, dangerous and earth shattering read. The characters were different from others I have read. Reminds me of the Shadow and Bones Series. Unique and well written, readers can't help but become addicted to them. I could not put the book down.
Overall this book was well written. The author took her time laying out the plot and creating a wonderful utopia. The story moved along at a steady pace. This book has a lot of excitement. It is filled with adventure, evil plots, loyalty, danger, and love. A wonderful start to an amazing adventure.
This book was fantastic! I enjoyed the action and the world she created. I can’t wait for the sequel. #spicy #morallygrey
Absolutely captivating. Abigail Owen crafts an incredible story of intrigue, magic and romance. I really enjoyed how the magical elements of the book intertwined with the political elements. I loved the concept of being a hidden princess! I haven’t read a book like this before! I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
2.5 ★
not a bad fantasy romance by any means- just painfully average.
i think the beginning of the book was the strongest, at least plot-wise. the whole situation with the hidden princesses, mysterious marriage proposal, and this sinister political threat looming over the kingdom's head was more than enough to capture my attention. it just all started moving too fast and got too convoluted to the point where i lost interest and gave up.
everything was pretty predictable. i can't say there were any major plot twists that shocked me to my core. i think i was most disappointed with the romance. it had so much potential, but then boom- instalove. they got all lovey dovey and mushy real quick, especially as i didn't feel any real chemistry between them??? they sort of fell for each other just because. i will at least say that they kept their banter even after their quick start, which was nice i guess.
i liked meren- her courage and wit were interesting, and i liked following her perspective. on the other hand, reven, the love interest, was.. not my fav. he was one of the guys who are all "im a bad person, you should stay away from me, im not good for you" blah blah. he, of course, falls for her and this leads to this exhausting back and forth between them where they keep denying attraction to each other. he was supposed to be all bad and scary, but he was actually very mushy and nice on the inside. BORING.
as a single, minority 3 star review in a SEA of glowing 5 stars, i would still encourage anyone interested to pick this up when it's released. this is a fun enough YA/NA fantasy romance, that i probably would've enjoyed more if i had picked it up at a better time.
I have never read a book by this author, but, after finishing this star of a book? I will definitely be keeping an eye out for her!!! Abigail Owen has created such a visually impactful world that makes it easy for you to immerse yourself in the story. The characters are all so relatable and ones you can't help but root for. And the romance? Ah! Beautifully done and spicy on all levels!
The Liar’s Crown was such a fast-paced read. I love books that are paced quickly because it manages to keep my attention. The world-building within this book was easy to understand and simple.
The magic system within The Liar’s Crown was so interesting. I loved that each category of magic had their own subcategories that had certain traits for the specific person. My favorite has to be the Enfernae, which deals with soul powers.
Meren is hands down an amazing FMC. She’s brave, sassy, and funny. All her little comments and comebacks made me genuinely laugh. Now, my favorite character, Reven. Reven is a softie when it comes to Meren and there’s no arguing with me over this. I love his little expressions and how unintentionally funny he can be.
I really enjoyed the plot of this story as well. It felt well developed and was executed great. At first when Reven was introduced it gave me Shadow and Bone (Leigh Bardugo) vibes, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t. Abigail Owen did an amazing job with this book. I truly can not wait for the second one!
Would like to say that this book is like upper YA to NA. There is a sex scene, but it isn’t extremely detailed.
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Teen for the eARC. These opinions and thoughts are all my own.
Thanks to Netgalley I was able to read this fabulous book. I quite enjoy the YA fantasy genre and this book did not disappoint. Plenty of twist and turns torn to keep me reading and giving it something diferent then other fantasy books with female heroes. I will be getting this for my niece
I just love getting arcs that I’m excited about and then forgetting why I even requested/got it until I crack it open and I’m amazed!!!
I’ve had this one for a while and hadn’t gotten around to it and honestly forgot what caught my attention but the cover continued to call to me so I gave in.
This story is freaking amazing. The whole time I was on the edge of my seat not knowing where it was going. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with the way things were developed lol it definitely had me reading faster to find out more!
What I really really loved was how the relationship between Reven and Meren developed. I liked the whole wanting to fight it aspect but loved that there wasn’t a whole lot of bs for them to come to terms with their feelings.
The whole time I kept wondering if this was a series and by the ending, I have to say it is AND I can’t freaking wait to see how Meren saves everyone’s a**
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley and it truly did not disappoint. I was hooked from the very beginning and could not put it down until i was finished! Owen did job amazing job creating an action packed world that is unlike any other YA/NA fantasy novel that and there really wasn’t anything in the book that I didn’t like. I’m a sucker for anything enemies to lovers with just the right amount of spice & banter and this did not disappoint. I loved the development between Meren and Revens characters, both individually and together. I thought was perfectly paced and not rushed. Owen did a fantastic job creating a brand new world that was fast paced and had me needing to read more. I cannot wait for the 2nd book!
This book was a really fun read couldn't put it down read in like a day I really enjoyed the plot and loved the characters and absolutely loved the main characters really excited to read the next book.
Okay this was okay! At first I thought looks like a recently book Twin crowns! But i love love love the idea of identical twins and this was just a good book for that. The story and the characters were amazing. I really want to read it again in a gewn Months ☺️
Four and a half
Oo this was good with a plucky heroine and a delicious brooding hero. Meren is the hidden twin who steps up when her sister needs her but when she's kidnapped in her sisters place it's up to her to not only escape but apparently save their world from an evil tyrant. Trouble is perhaps the wicked King who keeps eliminating Merens family is a lot closer to the truth than anyone imagined !
This had great pace and was a joy to read. I've enjoyed the authors dragon stories but this particular book had everything I look for in a fantasy romance. I genuinely enjoyed this with its surprises and original ideas and very much look forward to reading what happens next
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
I read about 50% of the book before I decided to call it a day, or well, a month. I think more than the book itself it's a me problem. Lately, I can't seem to enjoy books if they don't manage to hold my attention throughout; unfortunately, this book didn't. I did like the concept of the book, the idea of twins taking each other's places, and the concept of the magic, especially the powers attributed to the villain but the concept alone was not enough to get me through.
One of the odd things that stuck out to me was in the middle of the book, where (spoiler) this creature that had been kind of hunting the main character is just killed off screen. Another background character explains how to kill the creature and then the next line just declares oh okay so now the creature is dead. I think scenes like that should have been described more. For the first half of the book at least we rarely get the main character doing something on her own or relying on her wit and I get the situation she is in makes it difficult but come on.
Speaking of the main character I did not like her. I felt like her personality was incredibly inconsistent and went back and forth between someone who is honestly kind of naive and all too kind and sympathetic to questionable people around her, to becoming extremely cautious of the same people all of a sudden. I think the romance was just pushed so much like omg enemies to lovers (which is not what I'd call this tbh) that instead of drawing it out and letting the characters get comfortable with each other or anything, it was just pushed that oh she's already attracted to him, oh she's already sympathetic to him, I want more development than that.
we are also just told a lot of things instead of being shown, I would like to see some kind of memory that establishes the main character's sister as this kind, sunshine incarnate person the main character keeps saying she is, I'd like to see other scenes which as I mentioned for killing the creature were just wiped off as oh yeah that's done now.
and reven...despite finishing half the book I don't care about him at all. actually, I don't care much about the main character either, it just all generally seems very messy and I also don't understand why writers are so afraid to make their characters genuinely bad. I mean I suppose I should have expected reven to just be some misunderstood guy with trauma ig but I have and I probably always will prefer actually morally gray characters who do bad things for good reasons because that's what morally gray means.
the worldbuilding was introduced generally pretty well, I was able to keep following along with what was going on in that sense but the plot itself felt a little messy and I think it could have been restructured better.
I think for now at least this book is not my cup of tea and not really what I was expecting. I may come back to buy and read it when it actually comes out to see if I like it better then but for now, I'm going to have to end it here.
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
4/5 stars
Meren and Reven were such a fun couple to follow and watch grow! He is very much the grumpy male to her sunshine personality. I enjoyed their banter and how she didn’t fall head over heels with him. And the author did a good job writing it that even though he did steal her, it didn’t feel like she fell for her kidnapper.
Meren was an independent character who owned her actions. I appreciated that she realized her faults and grew from them. It was interesting reading about her powers and watching them manifest.
Reven was an enigma. He was a little tougher to figure out and understand. He did have a good character arc. I do wish we had a little more back story on how his powers worked? Or where the shadows came from? It also might have been explained and I just didn’t understand it clearly.
Overall this was a fun fantasy book and I’m excited for book 2! The characters were well fleshed out and had a good story arc. They had good chemistry and you were rooting for them to get together. I do think they needed to have a talk after everything came out in the open but that might be in book 2! I did struggle with understanding the world magic. That could be due to the fact that so much was going on though.
Solid 3 1/2 stars
I ended up liking this book more than I thought I would, though I do feel like it was almost two different books. The first half was a bit of a drag. There was a lot of traveling and hiding and events that ALMOST pushed the plot forward, but then stalled in order to make more of an impact later. The second half, however, was action packed and it moved at a clip that was perfectly suited to what was going on. It felt like Owen took off the training wheels and let the story fly.
As a YA book, I expect certain things to happen, and i'd say this book hit just about all of the tropes it could. The main character is sassy and beautiful and doesn't want no help. The antagonist who definitely wont be the antagonist for long, is dark and brooding. And for a while, these things read very tropey, but they do develop as you get deeper into the story. Some long sought after explanations turn some things on their head and make the tropes more appealing.
Also as a YA book, it got pretty steamy in the latter half, but no where near as steamy as, say, ACOTAR, which is no longer classified as YA... it was at one point!
Owen's world building is interesting. She's created a world I dont FEEL like I've entered before, but, especially in the first half, the dialogue can sometimes pull you right out of this world that is supposed to be different from our own. There's a war between fantasy language, both spoke and the very structure of how the characters speak, and modern day language. It feels messy in places and almost like some of those instances were missed in an editing pass. But this somehow gets less obvious or annoying as the book goes on.
The book ends with many more questions than answers, and I haven't seen or heard that there is going to be a sequel but I would certainly hope this will become at least a duology.
This book was such a fun read! I was in a reading slump and this book really got me out of it. I flew through this book in one afternoon and I am so sad it is over. I will be looking out for this author in the future and will be recommending this book to all of my family and friends.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
T his end of August release has everything I love about YA fiction. Meren was trained from birth to play the body double of her sister Tabra, who would one day become Queen. Meren was literally born to die as all second born twins had in her family before. When her grandmother dies, and Tabra becomes queen, Meren leaves her hiding to perform all the risky tasks as her sister. Once in the palace on her way as queen to a meeting, she is kidnapped and taken to a world around people she never knew existed. Meren, pretending to be her sister, must fight her attackers while trying to get back to her home alive.
This book is sure to be a best seller and a favorite among teens. It is the start of a series with the book ending in a cliffhanger.
