I didn't care for the FMC Miriam(mimi). She was too mean/rude for my taste, and I lost so much interest in her. Mateo was okay, though I wish he wasn't so soft with Mimi. He
In the beginning, the paceing was really good, but halfway through, it had slowed. There were a lot of things that didn't work for me in this book. Overall, this was just okay.
Thank you, NetGalley and publishers, for this ebook for an honest review.
"Forget Me" by Michelle McCraw is a mystery that will make you question your memory—unless you have a photographic one! McCraw's clever plot keeps you guessing as you turn pages faster than you can say, "Wait, what was I saying again?" This book is a memory test you won't want to forget.
You had me at himbo!
It was humorous in a non funny way that made giggle at them at least trying to be funny. The FMC was also just unlikeable and maybe thats because she reminds me of myself in the worst kind of way. I don't think I would read this author or the rest of this standalone series because it just felt like overdone tropes with no new aspect.
OMG I totally loved this story. Its very much insta love but also has a couple that are extreme opposites. They also are both a bit clueless so they keep getting their signals wrong but this made for a really fun story and one I had a hard time putting down. Matteo Mimi were so much fun and made me laugh and sigh many times over. This was such a romantic and sweet romance that I positively adored. If you want to read something fun and light read then you will adore this romcon.
This is a good book. The two main characters are Mimi and Mateo. Mimi is an accountant and Mateo does security for his cousin. There is an instant attraction. Mimi is on a gala committee and Mateo comes and help on the committee. They each have their issues but together they work them out and fall in love.
The book itself was a good and fun read for me . i just did not like the characters especially mimi. I'll keep it short , the plot was good on paper i just don't know if i loved the book altogether. liked it? yes. Will I reread it? probably not
I had a really hard time finishing this one. I loved the premise, but the execution was just not it for me. The heroine was abrasive and unlikable and I don't see why Mateo even liked her. I kept hoping it would get better but it really just didn't. Mateo wasn't even that likeable either.
Forget Me by Michelle McCraw is the fifth book in the Synergy book series, although it can also be read as a stand alone. When accountant Mimi wakes up after a night of fun with her girlfriends, she remembers the hot guy in glasses she flirted with at the bar but not much else. With no way to contact him – no phone number, not even a selfie – she’ll do her best to forget him. Because nothing, not even a sexy mystery man, will keep her from winning her dream job. Except maybe Mateo. Her brother’s friend is everywhere – spilling coffee on her presentation, bringing apology flowers to her at work, even wowing her new boss at her project meeting. Mateo has never struggled to be the fun, cool, suave guy – except around Mimi. She’s found his Awkward switch, and now it’s stuck in the ON position. After screwing up Mimi’s presentation, the least Mateo can do is help her. He charms her boss, who pushes them to attend the foundation’s upcoming gala together. If helping Mimi means being her fake date at her big work event, he’s more than up for the job. And if he can convince Mimi he’s good enough to be her real boyfriend, he’ll have all he’s ever wanted since he met her that night in the bar.
Forget Me had me worried when I noticed it was the fifth in a series and I had not read any of the previous books. However, while it did make me eager to read what all happened before this book, I felt like the characters and their situations were well handled and read well on its own. I understood Mimi, ever when I did not necessarily like her choices and actions at certain points, I could completely understand where she was coming from and how she felt. I loved that she was self aware enough to admit mistakes and deal with the potential fall out like an adult rather than just ignoring it. Mateo was a wonderful character and I loved the dichotomy that he presented in his personality and actions. Strong, suave, and smooth while at the same time as self doubting and self conscious as the rest of us. It reminded me that just about everyone has these kinds of feelings, no matter how the might act and how others perceive them. I loved the level of communication between the characters, and the honesty about the fears of getting close can bring on and how thy handled it in the story. I look forward to going back to read the previous books, and looking forward to the possible future books hinted at in this one.
Forget Me is a read that has depth of character and humor. Now I want to go back and read the books I missed in the series so I can see how the other characters came together.
I'm such a sucker for a moody/broody romantic interest so this was a breath of fresh air and a total twist on that one. Mimi has had her heartbroken and doesn't let anyone close until she meets Mateo. She doesn't seem him as a romantic prospect as he flirts with everyone. I love how he never gave up and the side characters and everything about this book.
Mimi doesn’t remember the night that she kissed Mateo, but he can’t forget it. When she wakes up the next day, all she can remember is a gorgeous guy in glasses, but she has no number or photo to remember him by. Mateo has never struggled to be the cool guy, yet when he is around Mimi, he always seems to say or do the wrong thing. So when it comes time to put on the charm for her boss, at a charity foundation, for which she acts as accountant, Mateo makes out that they are an item. So their fake relationship begins, until it is no longer fake.
I was really surprised to find that this was part of a series Synergy Workplace Romance, and it is a stand-alone book. These two main characters are interesting together with Mimi filled with self doubt whilst Mateo, constantly trying to bring out her positive side. He was an absolute delight and at times, I wished that Mimi could see his strength in character. Her lack of confidence was quite destructive and without revealing the storyline, a central component of her relationship with Mateo. Mimi gets one star, Mateo gets five, so three stars is a fair reflection overall. There are many secondary characters which add to the complexity of this story, which reveals why the characters of Mateo and Mimi are the way they are.
voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
DNF @ 77 %.
I didn't like Mimi. She works voluntarily for this woman Larissa or something and that woman is pushing her around because she knows Mimi wants a job in the organization. I think Mimi knows it but she just doesn't want to say anything.
Meanwhile, her relationship with the male MC (Matteo?) is just plain weird. Like they fight, they make up and fight again. I really felt like their relationship was very superficial.
Anyway, I forgot what was the reason why I stopped but I think it was just a slow story and nothing much was happening.
2.5ish stars - 3 stars.
The story wasn’t for me. I was bored and skipped a lot after 60% in the book.
The pace was good at first but at 50% it slowed a lot. The end was rushed. The book didn’t need 300 pages.
The sex scenes were awkward, and I cringed a lot.
The characters were okay. I really liked Mateo. He gave me a lot of Golden Retriever vibes.
He was a good guy and Mimi didn’t deserve him. She had no reason to be this mean and hurtful to Mateo.
Mimi was so rude to him and blamed Mateo for so much. I mean accidents do happen.
Sometimes she blamed him for something she did, and I hated that so much. He didn’t deserve it. Also, I hated that he was just nice to people, and she judged him and thought he was flirting. He was just nice!!!
Mimi gave me “pick me”-vibes. She always made sure everyone knew she is a nerd, and it gave me “I am better than everyone else” vibes. It also got on my nerves that Mimi always thought that everyone thought that she was a nerd and automatically thought less of her.
I would have liked to see more of her friendship with her best friend.
I liked the representation in this book. The male love interest is bi. Which you see rarely in books. And Mimi’s brother is gay and is in a healthy relationship.
Her best friend has Tourette. I liked that Mimi works for charity and it is her passion.
Conclusion:
Sadly, I didn’t felt the connection between this characters so I gave this book a pass.
But I will read more from Michelle McCraw.
Although this is the fifth book in the Synergy Workplace Romance series, you don't need to have read the others, I haven't. This book tells the story of Mimi and Mateo.
Mateo is a real sweetheart, he doesn't really see his own value and can't really see why someone like Mimi would be interested in him. Mini is more interested in her career and working her way to the job she wants by volunteering.
I really liked Mateo, but Mimi was less appealing. To be honest, I'm not sure that she deserved him. The romance was ok, but she spent too long going back and forth between whether they should be together or not. I also got a bit confused about who some of the other characters were. It may have made more sense to people who had read some of the other books, but Mateo's cousin seemed to have a different name, depending on who was talking about him. I spent much of the book thinking that they were two different people.
This was a good read, but I would have preferred a more likeable hero.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily.
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for giving me this book to review.
I really liked Mateo as he is a very smart man but when it comes to Mimi he gets clumsy and says the wrong things. I liked this a lot! What I didn't like was how mean Mimi was towards him. I loved the LGBT+ rep and a lot of the side characters but I should not like them more than the main character (Mimi). I soon lost the flow and spark of this book and DNF'ed the book at 67%. Perhaps other people who like the sunshine x grumpy trope but I found that this book got boring which is a shame.
Miriam (Mimi) is extremely driven and very passionate about moving forward in her career. She's an accountant but wants to move into the non-profit sector. Not only for personal success - but to help neurodivergent kids. She's been volunteering as a financial manager for a foundation - and recently started helping to plan their large fundraising gala. She does not have room in her life for more than a one-night stand. At her best friend's bachelorette party she meets (and forgets) a man who made her feel like she had found everything she was looking for.
Mateo is the cousin of Mimi's brother's fiance. He is sweet, very good looking and a natural caretaker. He doesn't have a college education and is pretty much the opposite of career driven. But he is a very good person. His entire life - folks have underestimated him and clearly have taken advantage of his sweet caring nature. He's clearly been in love with Mimi since the first time he met her - but hasn't been able to function well around her because he is so lovestruck. So every time they meet - things are a bit of a disaster. It doesn't help that Mimi is kind of a jerk to him and really judges him unfairly.
This, unfortunately, maybe led to me not liking the book as much as I could have. The main issue - I just didn't like Mimi very much. Even though she does let Mateo in - I just never felt an emotional connection with her. She seemed cold and the relationship between her and Mateo seemed very unbalanced.
That being said, I adored the LGTBQ representation in this book - and the supporting cast of characters were all well written. Mateo being bisexual really made so much sense with his character.
Overall - this was a good read - but wasn't great for me.
I received this via NetGalley as an ARC, but these opinions are all my own.
When I read there was gonna be a himbo hero, I knew I had to read this one. In my opinion there is truly a lack of male MCs with golden retriever energy and an infatuation with a smart and strong heroine. Unfortunately this was not it. In this particular case describing Mateo as a himbo is actually insulting to him, as a main issue for him is that everyone sees him as a lot dumber than he really is, which hurts him continually. Still he was the absolute nicest and sweetest dude and always trying his best. The problem for me wasn't only the misleading description of Mateo (which would be fine if it didn't directly contradict his story arc of trying to be taken more seriously), but the way Mimi treated him. Or just Mimi period. She was so MEAN for no reason. It was completely uncalled for to act so hurtful towards Mateo. Her reasoning that he is nice to everyone and therefore isn't flirting with her or is disingenuous is just... Weird. Like just because someone is a genuinely nice person doesn't mean they are putting on an act. For her to be hurtful on purpose with no real excuse just put me off the story. I wasn't rooting for Mateo and Mimi as a couple, Mateo definitely deserved better. Especially because I was getting some real pick me vibes from Mimi, the way she always had to make sure to emphasize her nerdiness and intellect and how men couldn't handle it and women didn't like her because of it. She definitely had some bad experiences but it's no excuse to be a jerk.
Overall I would have to give this one a pass, just because of Mimi and her unlikability. I also didn't appreciate the "real women have curves and don't look like toothpicks" peppered in there. Body positivity, yes please, but not by putting down one group of women....
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
I love the grumpy meets sunshine trope and so I loved this book. It was a compelling read that had well developed characters that I loved. A great read.
There’s just something about a hot guy who flirts with nearly everyone turning into a bumbling mess of a man that really does it. Mateo is that guy. He is in love with Mimi, but Mimi is career-focused and only thinks of Mateo as someone else who judges her as a being a nerd and making stupid math jokes.
Mateo fell in love with Mimi at first sight, but she told a math joke that he didn’t quite understand, and she interpreted that as him judging her and ultimately making fun of her. Because of this, Mimi doesn’t think of Mateo as anything other than a Casanova who can flirt with whomever he chooses.
When Mateo finally gets an evening with Mimi…she doesn’t remember it! She was drunk and didn’t remember their heartfelt conversation whatsoever.
If you like tropes, then this book is for you! Grumpy/Sunshine (where the Grump is the FMC), fake dating, himbo. Michelle McCraw really lays it all out there in this new novel. I really enjoyed Mimi’s internal dialogue. Mimi has been told for years by her mother that women must work harder in order to get to where they want to be. And she’s right- to a fault. Mimi really takes this to heart after a previous boyfriend stole a promotion from her. Because of that disaster, Mimi is focused on her career and doesn’t want any “distractions”. But what happens when a potential distraction is exactly what she needs? Mateo and Mimi bounce off one another, really complement one another as people. Where Mimi is set in her ways, Mateo is all about doing everything in his power to help Mimi.
After devouring this book in less than two hours, I have to say that it was quite a pleasant read. I loved seeing Mimi and Mateo’s personalities and how they differ, but also how they work so well together. And who doesn’t love a man who will stop at nothing to give you the world? I love the writing, especially Mimi’s internal dialogue with herself and how she sees situations.
The only reason I’m giving this four stars rather than five is because I found myself getting irritated with Mimi towards the middle of the book leading to the end. One minute she was hot with Mateo and the next she was out the door and then the next she was over-the-moon swooning. I felt like I couldn’t keep up with her for a moment. Overall, the pacing of this book was great and I’m glad the ending was what it was.
