Great resource for homeschool. Books about books are always fun. Books like this help encourage kids to read and to pick out their own books.
Thanks to Netgalley and DK Children for the ARC of this!
My kids had never really come across a book like this before, one that lays out a number of books with art and a synopsis and little notes about why you might want to read it. I loved that it was diverse, as advertised, and that there were suggestions leading to other similar books in the collection if you'd liked one. We took down a lot of notes of what we might be interested to read in the future, and I think this helped them think about how to talk about literature.
What a wonderful resource!! The Reading Adventure would be perfect for librarians, teachers, and homeschool parents/educators looking for specific diverse book ideas. This book is very well laid out and easy to use. The illustrations inside are really beautiful. I enjoyed the author interviews that were included in this.
Thank you, DK children, and NetGalley, for a copy in return for my honest review.
The Reading Adventure would be perfect for every librarian, teacher and even parent. The book highlights 100 great children’s books, each with a short synopsis, topics covered, and other books too consider if you enjoyed a given title. Some of the books even feature a short interview with the author. I love that this was created in collaboration with We Need Diverse Books as diversity in books is so important, especially for children. the books highlighted in The Reading Adventure are definitely geared towards older elementary students.
This is definitely a curated list of diverse books. I read a ton of diverse children’s and middle grade books and I haven’t heard of most of the books included. I liked the short blurbs about each book, and some entries even included information about the authors. This is a great reference book, but obviously not one you’d just read for fun.. To me it’s like perusing Amazon for book, but in hard copy. It would probably be most useful for teachers and librarians for suggesting diverse books to students.
I like book like this and this one is way more manageable that a 1000 books. It was a well planned out and diverse list. Every library needs this.
I love DK Books and I support the mission of the "We Need Diverse Books" organization. However, despite being able to read any other book for which I've been approved on NetGalley, I have been unable to access this book. However, I plan on asking my local library to purchase this book for circulation in our community and I can read it that way. I don appreciate a curated anthology of books that represent people of all walks of life!
Thank you to DK Books, We Need Diverse Books, and NetGalley for approving me for this book.
I was really excited to read this book, but once my request to read it was approved, the ARC was removed from Net Galley with this message: Downloading and/or reviewing is currently not possible for this title. This could mean the publisher has not yet provided the final content, or the content has been removed.
I contacted NetGalley immediately and waited weeks to see if the publisher would make the ARC available again, but nothing has happened...
If this ARC becomes available, I will be more than happy to read it and update this review.
How great was this resource! As a school librarian of grades PK-12, it showcased a lot of books that I was slightly familiar with, but I was able to gain more of a detailed understanding though this resource. We are definitely buying a copy!
Unfortunately, according to the NetGalley site, this book cannot be downloaded. I am not sure why. It is a title that I am certain I would want to read, especially as I tutor beginning readers.
I think this is a great, well thought-out book that we'll be adding to our home library and asking our local library to request.
A great anthology of children’s books for those looking for more diversity - with beautiful illustrations to go with each feature ! Definitely worth checking out .
Get one for your household or as a gift, and also for your school and local public library! DK books are always great and this one is far from an exception. Though it is aimed at elementary school students, it is perfect for ESL, parents, other students, and anyone who needs a boost to think better of themselves. There are paragraphs about the different books and characters as well as mini bios of a number of authors. The key characters (and the authors) are as different as all of us who live in areas with diverse populations. A wonderful book for each of us at (almost) any reading level. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age. The illustrations are delightful, colorful, vibrant, and imaginative.
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from DK/DK Children via NetGalley. Thank you!
This is a great resource for libraries, classrooms, or others who are trying to figure out what books to read and what they are about. Broken down into different categories, each book has a summary and some facts plus bits about authors are sometimes included. The book includes books across many genres and tells you what you'd like to be aware of when choosing to read or not.
The Reading Adventure
Pub Date: October 2022
A great resource for our library. This colorful and engaging book provides eye-catching snippets of information along with more in-depth explanations of a host of relevant and diverse titles. As a children's librarian, I love that this book can connect patrons with many books already within our collection, and it also introduces me to a few titles I have yet to read.
4 stars
This is a neat book! I will be reading a lot of them with my kiddo. Also, it’s well written with beautiful illustrations!
I think this is a great way to present books to a child. I'm going to purchase it for my library for sure. I believe this really has the chance to open children and their parents up to books they might not know exist or to encourage them to read outside of their comfort zone.
I love to have books full of booklists in order to give my kids options of books to read. It's always nice to know what you might be interested in reading before heading to the library, a book sale, a book store, or even just trying to figure out a gift for someone.
This is essentially a well rounded booklist for kids. It gives options of middle grade books that handle multiple cultures, backgrounds, disabilities, and experiences; a very handy resource.
Thank you to DK books for sending me this ARC to read through Netgalley.
If you have a son or daughter that is 8-12 years old, I highly recommend this book. Inside are 100 books every child should read (or should be read to them) before their teen years. It includes a brief description of each book, illustrations, a quick look at what the book is about, and two other books included in the book that you’d like if you liked the first one. There are also author interviews for some of the books. I read/listen to a lot of books with my 8 and 9 year old, but we’ve actually only read a few of the books listed, so I was excited to add so many books to our to read list. The ones we have read are some of our favorite books. The diversity in authors and characters on this list is great and the problems the characters face are ones that most kids do face in their tween and teen years. We’re excited to spend the next few years reading/listening to the books from the list and I even added the entire book list as a Goodreads Shelf for us to keep track!
Thanks NetGalley and DK for the opportunity to review this book.
A wonderful book of diverse story suggestions for middle grade readers! 100 exciting books are featured and some include author interviews. Young readers will love this.
Thank you DK and NetGalley for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
