I'm always stumped when helping my 9-year-old pick out ebooks from the library - I feel like I'm always googling "best chapter books for 7yos or 8yos or 9yos." And so I was delighted to find this book. It groups books into categories including, "Make 'Em Laugh," "Marvelous Mysteries," "Essential Conversations," and "Becoming Me." Each book page includes a short summary, a "Quick Look" with themes featured in the book and further recommendations of similar books, and an eye-catching illustration. Each section also features an author interview.
The books featured here are amazingly diverse, offering such a range of representation, and includes some of the best middle grades books my 9yo and I have enjoyed together lately like V.E. Schwab's City of Ghosts, Kelly Yang's Front Desk, and more.
I downloaded three recommendations from this book last night to my 9yo's kindle from the library and the first one he picked up is already a hit. This is definitely a great resource for kids and parents alike!
The Reading Adventure has a wonderful list of books, including a few I hadn't heard of and will be checking out! I'd love to have seen a spot for kiddos to write their personal reviews of each title, making this more like a journal.
I loved this book. It had excellent ideas and great graphics. On each recommendation it has what genres it would fit and what topics it covers. It was perfect! I have just sat and looked through it several times since opening it just because it is a delight!
This colorful and engaging book provides eye-catching snippets of information along with more in-depth explanations of a host of relevant and diverse titles. As a children's librarian, I love that this book can connect patrons with many books already within our collection, and it also introduces me to a few titles I have yet to read. I appreciate the "If you like this, check out...." Quick Look boxes, and the format of each page satisfies the need for instant information yet allows readers to learn more about each wonderful title in a concise and easy-to-read paragraph. Looks like an awesome resource to have as a supplement or back-up option to in-house reader's advisory! I've added it to my ordering list for my library system.
I loved this book! It was an anthology of books for children/young teens (but really anyone) by We Need Diverse Books. The book is divided up by genre/group - like there is mystery but then also uplifting stories. Each is accompanied with a beautiful illustration, a brief synopsis, and then a box about what topics it covers (like family changes, folklore, etc.) as well as if you liked this, go read about this other book in this anthology. I loved that it spanned more than just young children. So many books added to my to be read list!
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Reading Adventure is a great guide for readers under the age of 12. DK includes diverse reading lists for young readers to enjoy and explore. The illustrations that accompany the lists are captivating as well! I appreciate that the Reading Adventure includes so many books from different genres that young readers can look for depending on their interests. This book was all-encompassing and would be a great resource to have in the classroom, especially when students aren't sure what to read next!
Thank you NetGalley and DK Children for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
The Reading Adventure features 100 books to read before age 12. There are book lists for all kinds of interests, from scary book, mysteries, heroic adventures, and comedy. I really loved the features that included an interview with the author. I liked the diversity of books and authors, whether BIPOC, queer, or disabled. I loved the bright illustrations that accompanied each book selection. It also had some great tips from writers for young budding writers. Excellent!
