Fiona, beloved hippo of the Cincinnati Zoo has appeared in several books detailing her remarkable survival after being born two months early. This new title follows Fiona as she visits friends around the zoo and finds many different ways to express love. Giraffes entwine their necks. Monkeys groom each other. Swans swim together. Porcupines rub noses. Wherever she looks, Fiona sees signs of affection - but "her favorite love is back at home."

Rhyming text points out that wallabies cuddle babies in their pouches while "chilly penguins peck and nestle." The illustrations show animals from red pandas to warthogs cuddling, cooing, and enjoying group hugs. Several of the images cleverly work in the shape of a heart; readers may see it in the necks of two swans beak to beak, or the trunks of two elephants. Other animals may pose like the peacocks or wrestle like the bears, but they are all showing their closeness in a way typical of their species.

Richard Cowdrey has illustrated many other Fiona books including Fiona Helps a Friend and A Very Fiona Christmas. Fans will be happy to add another book about the world's favorite baby hippo to their shelves.

I am a fan of the real Fiona. I followed her growth and care after she was born prematurely at the Cincinnati Zoo. I visited the Zoo and Botanical Gardens to see Fiona and hope now to return and see her new brother Fritz. This Fiona adventure focuses on Love at the zoo and features rhyming words. The cheery illustrations of many zoo animals perfectly accompany the story. Children can enjoy the story and animals whether or not they know Fiona is based on a real hippo. This is a book to read to small children of read by K-2 (and up). Thank you to NetGalley and Zonderkidz for an ARC in exchange for a review.

This is a beautiful book that explains to children the different ways in which we can love one another. I had no idea that Fiona was a real life hippo and this adds a further educational opportunity. I think this would be ideal for Key Stage 1 children and would build on their knowledge of rhyme, giving them opportunities to be playful with words.
Not just a book for pleasure or for English lessons, I think this would work in a cross curricular way.,
I very much enjoyed it.

In honor, of Fiona’s new brother- I am posting early!!!! Yay, another baby hippo!! We are so excited and Ollie can’t wait to visit him! 🥰🥰

I requested this book so fast!! We are from Cincinnati and Fiona is so special to us. How cool is it to go to the zoo and see her in real life, all the time?! We own all the books but I was really excited to get an arc of this one.

Like all the Fiona books, this one is so sweet and special. Love at the zoo, is always something you see with the animals. I loved the beautiful illustrations and so did Oliver! He loves the zoo and seeing that it was Fiona had him really excited. It’s such a sweet book and perfect for Valentine’s Day! He kept “aww-ing” throughout this book. For us this was a hit from the beginning but I think your kids would love it without knowing who Fiona is. It’s about animals at the zoo and love, what could be better?! There’s also some rhyming in here, which I appreciated.

I highly recommend this one if you are from the area or love Fiona! Even if you don’t… I think your kids will still enjoy it!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Zonderkidz for an e-arc to review.

The illustrations were beautiful and added so much to the whole feel of the book.
Fiona, goes round the zoo seeing how some of the other show each other love.

If you have young children they would love this book and I would recommend it.

I’m completely underwhelmed by this book, I don’t really see any point to the storyline, its about love, Fiona the hippo has her love (her baby). Also I struggle to see anything that I could use for teaching, as there are better books out there to show off animals. I wouldn’t pick this book for that reason, however if you have a strong affection for the Fiona stories, then you will love this one too.

The illustrations are however very beautiful, a lot of cuddling animals…

This book was simple, cute and perfect. It highlighted how diverse love can be and how families may look different and have differing ways of showing love to each other. I think this concept is so important in our current world. The artwork was by far my favorite part of this book. It was incredible.

Advanced (ebook) copy review: This was a super fun read that my 7yr old and I enjoyed together. In this book Cincinnati Zoo's world famous hippopotamus, Fiona, takes a journey around the zoo and sees how her animal friends show affection and love. The reader learns about how different animals at the zoo show love to their families and friends. Some share the food, some snuggle, some boop noses, and at the end Fiona shows us her favorite way to show love to her hippo friends and family.

The Fiona books continue to be adorable and fun to read! They're popular with the kids at my library and it's good to see there will be more for them to read.

My only grievance was with the fact that when some of the animal couples were shown one was given eyelashes (the first example I noticed was with the swan), I assume to show they were feminine, even though everything else about the illustrations was realistic and otherwise enjoyable.

Oh gosh how cute is this! The story expresses love, it’s easy to read, and the colors are bright. Thank you to the publisher and author for a copy.

The art was very obviously painted well, but overall this was just a weird book. It really just felt excessive, like the book's goal was forcing heterosexuality on children. I don't know if kids want to see THAT much kissing, smooching, and touching done by anyone, let alone anthropomorphic(?) animals.

Fiona’s book about love at the zoo is fantastic. I loved the rhyming prose and think my first graders would love using this book to studying rhyme. I think it’s a wonderful book when rhythms like Boynton to introduce children from a very young age to the animals they can see at the zoo. Highly recommend!

Thank you to NetGalley and Zonderkidz-Books for making this arc available for me to read and fall in love with ❤️
