Let me start by saying I loved this book and Olivia Dade will forever be an autobuy author for me. I loved Maria and Peter- Dade’s female characters are always powerhouse women and the men are always so loving and sweet which is truly the best combination in my humble opinion. I didn’t connect with Maria and Peter quite as well as I did April & Marcus or Lauren & Alex but I think that’s just because their particular issues didn’t hit as close to home as some of those from her previous books. This was still a great story with great characters and I loved it. 4.5 stars.
What an absolutely wonderful story. I had a smile on my face almost the entire time I was reading this, because the novel is so lovely.
Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved Maria; Peter, too, was fantastic. The relationship between the main characters is a fantastic one that is swoony, hot, and heartwarming.
I’d never before read a novel by Olivia Dade; I also had zero idea that this was book three in an established series. Now that I’m aware, I will say that I am planning on getting the first two titles of the series and reading them, soon.
I really, really enjoyed this one. Recommended.
This third installment of Olivia Dade’s series surrounding the cast of a GoT-like show delivered again! While incorporating previously introduced characters, much like their characters on the show, Maria and Peter are more isolated from the cast than the previous books. It makes this delightful lovers-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers book much more focused on the central couple as they figure out how to build and balance family - both found and otherwise. If you’re a fan of the previous books - this addition won’t disappoint and if you’re new to the series, Shipwrecked is a fun behind the scenes look at creating a television series with leads that are clearly pining for one another.
Olivia Dade has done it again!!! I truly did not think she could top herself after Spoiler Alert but Ship Wrecked is coming in at a close second. Thank you to Netgalley for the chance to read an early copy!
I am so happy we finally get to read Peter and Maria’s story!!
Let’s start at the very beginning… Peter spots Maria and there is instant attraction leading to a one night stand, after which they end up having to audition for the same show. To their horror/surprise/frustration Peter and Maria get cast as vikings stranded on an Irish island in the hit show Gods of the Gates. It wouldn’t be so bad except Peter is still hurt/interested in Maria and the crew shooting on the island is miniscule- like 5 people. Over the 6 years they film there, the group grows to be great friends and pseudo-family and the tension between Maria and Peter keeps building. As they’re about to be separated at the end of filming, they learn they get to go on a little tour to do interviews together, giving them the chance to explore their relationship beyond friendship in their hometowns in Wisconsin and Sweden.
Let’s put it this way: I love Maria, I love Peter, I love Maria’s family, I love Madison, WI where Peter grew up, I love the cameos by the rest of the Gods of the Gates cast, I love the crew on the islands, and I LOVE OLIVIA DADE!
This was not the book for me, but there were parts of it that I really enjoyed! I think for the right reader, this could easily be a four or five star read.
It’s the story of Maria and Peter, who are co stars in a Game of Thrones type fantasy show. They go from strangers who have a one night stand to coworkers to friends to pining for each other (that was my favorite part) to lovers.
I didn’t like the beginning and I didn’t like the end, but there was a lot to love about the middle. So I want to talk most about the middle! It was refreshing to see body positivity in a book where the protagonists are BOTH curvy and BOTH celebrities. I loved the idea of their fans “shipping” the relationship both on & off screen. It made me think of Jamie Lanister & Brienne of Tarth. Seeing Maria & Peter develop a friendship over the course of the show and then pining for each other on and off set was fantastic. I also liked the way they supported each other through the tough times during filming.
What I didn’t love:
The one night stand in the beginning was kind of gross to me. Mostly because we got almost zero sense of their compatibility beyond the physical & I think it would have been helpful to see at least a hint of that emotional attachment. I also felt like the fan fiction sections were just tacked on. It didn’t really fit. Peter was my favorite character between the two and while I love that he sacrificed for Maria, part of me felt like she wasn’t showing him the same kind of effort. In a relationship, both people need to give a little. It shouldn’t just be one person doing all of the work. Maybe that’s the fantasy though? I don’t know.
Anyway, for readers who love Comic Con, high fantasy, fan fiction, and shipping your fave fictional relationships, you will love this read. If those things aren’t your jam, you might skip this one.
I loved the story even though it was definitely a insta-love. I felt like Maria was probably my favorite character out of all three books. Finally a woman who knows she’s beautiful and big! She is happy with herself but also has an amazing support system.
I also appreciated that both main characters talk about therapy openly. They didn’t just fix their problems without realizing they needed help. Even more we get to see a woman saying I need this type of relationship. Finally! A woman saying she knows what she wants in a life partner and she won’t accept less.
My biggest issue was the pacing. It just felt off. I appreciated we got to see an in-depth relationship for the first season of shooting but parts of it dragged. Also Peter talks about how they grew to love one another but the only reason they weren’t together is because he wanted to not be coworkers. Overall a 4 out of 5 ⭐️!
I consumed this book. It was truly wonderful - Olivia Dade is a master at creating stories that feel specific to the protagonists and have arcs that reflect the uniqueness of their relationship. I never get tired of her books.
Olivia Dade does it again! I LOVED this book. Maria and Peter are one of my new favorite couples!
Dade always does such a good job at developing characters and relationships that feel real, while still adding much needed diversity to the romance genre. I don't know if I have ever read a romance book with a male plus sized hero, but I LOVED IT! They had such amazing chemistry and I loved how their complicated backgrounds and past enhanced the plot and made the problems they faced in their relationship more believable. Plus, I love a slow burn and this book does it so well!
Olivia Dade has quickly become an auto-buy author for me, and for good reason!
I really enjoyed Peter and Maria’s story and thought they had great chemistry throughout the book. It was fun seeing two cast mates as love interests for a change and how their filming experience contributed to their relationship and personal growth, like how Maria forced Peter to become more comfortable in social situations among the filming crew.
As characters, both Peter and Maria have complex and even heartbreaking backgrounds. Their unique childhoods contributed to many of the conflicts in this book and it was a great lesson of how lasting certain traumatic experiences are. I liked how they helped each other grow and overcome the lasting impacts and move foreword in life. I found that the complexity of their relationships with each other and loved ones made them such interesting characters.
While I did enjoy this book, it did feel rather long and dragged out. Lots of scenes could have been edited down a bit more to make it a faster paced read as sometimes I did get bored while reading. The writing itself was good and I can see the improvement in comparison to earlier books in the series. The plot did feel a little shallow as it was simply following their relationship with little else for side plot besides the whole housing situation, but it was still a cute book.
The body positivity in this book was great and I loved that both main characters were acknowledged as fat rather than just one main character as it’s refreshing to see male main characters that aren’t the stereotypical lean and buff body type.
Overall, I really liked this book and can see myself recommending it to fellow romance enthusiasts with a soft spot for a Hollywood centered love story!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for an eARC of Ship Wrecked in exchange for an honest review.
⭐⭐
I loved the first two novels in this trilogy, and hold Spoiler Alert near and dear to my heart. Marcus, April, and their love made me feel that even as a fat person, I was still deserving of love. I loved that the two previous books had me captivated and invested in characters I could see myself in.
This book did not create that same feeling.
The pacing was really off, and the use of a time skip took away from the part of the story that I was excited about. The tension on the island was something to potentially invest in as a reader. The skip instead shoved the characters along to fit the larger plot, but that plot wasn’t nearly as engaging. The stakes were low once the show was over, and the characters felt like they didn’t know each other when they’d really spent the better half of a decade on a remote island together. The final conflict of the story felt really forced. Especially considering Maria’s reaction to Peter’s choice, when she herself is an actress in the same position he is. And as fun as the jar of herring was the first time, the joke became really old, really fast.
What was more upsetting, however, was the use of Real People Fiction. This series has relied heavily on fanfiction, and that’s always been a buy-in for me. However, book three took it in a direction that I find unacceptable. I think it’s inappropriate, to the point of being harmful, to condone the creation of explicit fanfiction in which the two main characters of the fic are real people. This story goes so far as to glorify it when the two “real people” in question (even though they’re characters in a novel, they’re real in the context of the creation of the fanfiction) then use that explicit fic to spice up their sex life. I always turn the idea of RPF back on the writer: How would you feel if people you’d never met before wrote graphic depictions of you and your best friend having sex? I don’t think it’s something that people should be endorsing the way Ship Wrecked did. This is what took the book from “okay” to “I won’t recommend this to others.”
I loved Spoiler Alert, and I’m thankful for the body positivity that Olivia Dade tries to add to the book/Rom-com community. Ship Wrecked just wasn’t it.
Olivia Dade books are always a go-to for me- the Spoiler Alert series especially. I couldn't wait to read Ship Wrecked and I was not disappointed. :)
First of all- a plus size female AND male protagonist? SIGN ME UP. Maria and Peter had amazing chemistry, even during some of the slightly slower parts of the book and they kept me rooting for them. I loved everything about this fat positive take and the fact that the plot didn't revolve around their size but gave enough references to it that the representation was fully there and genuine. I also LOVED that Olivia Dade normalized female body hair (anywhere and everywhere) and that Maria fought against the stigma of her appearance without any self-hate in each situation where it popped up.
The spice was as always excellent, and the pieces of the story that brought in characters from the previous two books were some of my favorite parts. I felt like this book also had a little more depth to the main characters, and their stories both definitely had me tearing up at times.
I also loved the scenes featuring an intimacy coordinator! I thought that was a cool addition :)
All in all, a fantastic addition to the Spoiler Alert and Gods of the Gates world!
Possible TW/CW: fat phobia, misogyny, abandonment, death of a parent
**Thanks to NetGalley & Avon and Harper Voyager for the ARC to review!**
This book had me HOOKED straight from the first page! I really loved this book and can't wait to read more from this author!
I love Olivia Dade’s love towards her characters. I loved Peter and Maria and the group chat. That being said, the pacing of this book was all over the place and it took me way too long to figure out where this one fit in the “Spoiler Alert” timeline.
The pacing and general plot made it almost impossible for me to get into the story and care about the story.
Right from the first sentence i was like 'oh its THAT kind of book!'- this is spicy and a quick read. thanks netgalley & the publisher for the arc!
LOVED this book. Right from page one I was hooked. I loved the pace of this book and the characters. Would recommend in a heart beat
I adored every moment of the Spoiler Alert series, and am ✨begging✨ for more. Of the three, this couple really enveloped me into their world. The body positivity/representation is spot-on, as in all of Dale’s works, but the complex and nuanced relationship between Peter and Maria felt more raw and deeper than the first two books’ respective couples. They really ebb and flow romantically and ultimately their slow burn is rooted in respect and personal growth that is realistic, and relatable. The book is sexy and funny, but gives so much more! 4.5 stars ⭐️
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this eARC.
I loved this book, Being plus sized I love feeling seen, but I love it not being the center focus even more.
This book will make you laugh and cry.
The only thing I didn’t love was somethings felt over explained in way that made me bored.
Definitely a must read for Olivia Dade!
An incredible end to the Spoiler Alert trilogy, though I would pay for more stories in this universe. Maria and Peter's off-the-charts chemistry and long-time yearning made the pay-off all the more satisfying and made me squeal with delight! The use of fanfiction interstitials were clever as always, and it was wonderful to see old favorites from the previous books in the series. This entire series has captured my heart and will definitely continue to be a comfort re-read for years to come. Someone adapt these books ASAP!
Olivia Dade is one of the few authors that has plus size main characters in her books, and not just “curvy” but actually plus size. As a plus size woman myself it really makes me feel seen and wanted.
Ship Wrecked follows Maria and Peter co-stars on the show Gods of the Gates, who are BOTH plus size 🥰 I love the representation but I love that the fact that they are plus size is not the main focus in the story. I really enjoyed getting to learn more about Maria and Peter and seeing their relationship develop. I laughed and I cried and I read this book in one sitting. I definitely recommend this read!
