I read this book for Net Galley.
This book was super cute. I just love Olivia Dade and I can't not explained how fast I hit request once I saw this book.
I will say this book starts off with a bang. ;) I love how this book has characters that a lot of people can see their self in. There was so many times I was smiling. I love Maria so much!!
The only complaint I have is I'm not fond of the side stories if you can call them that. As in the group chats, fan fic, etc. But this is the only things ive really not liked about all three of these books in this series
Peter and Maria have a one night stand before being cast together in Gods of the Gates - which requires them to shoot on location (as the only two cast members) in Ireland for what ends up being six years. They keep their hands to themselves off screen, but when filming for the series finale is complete - their restraint shatters. With the end of the television series, their personal and professional lives are up in the air and the conflict and romance are tied up in how and if they can manage to combine their lives in a way they both can be happy.
The thing I love about Olivia Dade's characters and their ultimate conflict is you are never quite sure how it's all going to shake out. The reader is able to understand where each character's conflict comes from and it feels completely valid and rational. Like of course Maria is going to feel this way and Peter is going to feel that way and it makes sense for them. But the way Dade ultimately allows each character to change and grow is just masterful.
If you love Dade's previous work - this will be no exception. It's a beautifully crafted, sexy story.
ARC kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of my highly anticipated books of the year having read both Spoiler Alert and All the Feels and loving them both (especially All the Feels) and let me tell you this did not disappoint!
Maria and Peter spend one semi-anonymous night together and think that's the end of the story. However when they are both cast on the hit show God at the Gates (a clear GOT analogue) they realize that this is just the beginning and they will be in very close quarters isolated for the next several years. This book does a wonderful job of telling a story that spans almost 7 years. The pacing makes sense, the skipped time is referenced in cute ways so it doesn't really feel like you have missed too much and the lovers, to enemies, to friends. to lovers feels real and fully explored.
One of the things I have loved about all the Olivia Dade books I have read are the wonderful fat female leads and while Maria is a wonderful addition I also really enjoyed having a fat male lead as well. Maria is so enamored with Peter's body truly as it is in a way that I have never gotten to read before and really enjoyed. Additionally, Maria not only lives the life of a confident fat women but pushes the tv and film industry and those in her personal life to be less fatphobic and refuses to bend to the wills of those around her when they act in anti-fat and misogynistic ways. Her easy confidence was really refreshing in a fat female character.
All around this is a great book I loved every minute of it, and I think more then All the Feels this one could easily stand alone in this series.
I received a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you Net Galley and Avon and Harper Collins Voyager.
A slow burn. Lovers-to-best friends-to-lovers. Found family. (Apparent) opposites attracting. This romance ticks so many of my boxes, but what I appreciate most is when grown-ass adults know what they want, articulate it to their partners, and resolve seemingly intractable conflicts to enjoy healthy relationships.
Maria and Peter are co-stars on the same series, Gods of the Gates, in which Marcus (Spoiler Alert) and Alex (All the Feels) also star. After a one night stand the day before their audition for the show, they spent the next six years filming together on a remote Irish island; since their characters are shipwrecked in the series, they are the only two costars in this locale. They manage to forge a friendship despite their awkward beginning, building a family of the cast and crew and resisting their unrelenting attraction to one another. Somehow, Olivia Dade manages to show their connection unfold over their six years on set together without the story dragging. It's endearing to watch them become friends, fight one another, fight for one another, and flirt like mad--all while they each secretly know they have feelings for the other that they can't or won't act upon.
Once the series concludes, they have to decide whether to pursue a relationship: Maria's family all live in her native Sweden, and Peter is based in Los Angeles. Each experienced difficult childhoods that affected how they built their careers and imagine their futures, and it's clear that despite their affection and attraction to one another, they may not be able to make a relationship work. How they get to their happy ending involves maturity and growth on both their parts.
Like the rest of the Spoiler Alert series, the characters here are witty, charming, and plain fun to spend time with. I adored Maria, and while I wanted to smack Peter a few times, I enjoyed him as well. Their chemistry is hot, so don't worry about the book being all chatting, all the time. As with the rest of the Spoiler Alert series, there is great fat representation here: Both leads are fat characters, and body positivity and activism plays a role in the plot at a key point.
A note about the whole series: Let's say you were a fan of a wildly popular fantasy TV show that ended on an unsatisfying note for virtually every character. You know, one in which the two showrunners screwed up nearly every storyline once they ran out of source material on which to base the plot. If you happened to be a fan of that show, the Spoiler Alert series is so, so delicious in so many ways.
Four stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When I tell you that I squealed when I got an email, saying that I received and arc, I’m not even kidding.
After reading All the Feels, I had high expectations and I’m happy to say that Ship Wrecked met them! While I don’t know if any book will make me feel the same way that All the Feels did, I still really enjoyed this book.
I had so much fun reading about Maria and Peter and their story that spans over six years.
The day before finding out whether Peter gets his dream role in a popular tv show, he meets Maria, a gorgeous Swedish woman, in a sauna. They have a one night stand and Peter wakes up to his hotel room empty and no sign of Maria left. Soon after, he finds out that yes, he did get the role and his co-star, the woman he’s meant to be filming with on an isolated island (just the two of them, other than the crew) for years, is none other than Maria.
After a rough start, they become friends and they both harbor feelings for each other, but nothing happens because they couldn’t risk the chance that something would go wrong and they’d be miserable working together. About six years later, they’ve finally finished filming the show, and Peter takes his chance.
My favorite thing (other than the moments where Alex appeared) about this book was how great of friends they were. Of course there was chemistry and spice, but their friendship was so cute and they actually could mess around with each other. They were best friends and lovers combined in one and I loved it.
One great thing about Olivia Dade is that she has great representation in her books AND, in her plus sized characters, she doesn’t make being fat the only thing about them. I’ve read way too many books about fat women where they’re extremely insecure about their bodies and that’s basically their only personality trait and Dade does not do that.
Also… can I just say we need way more representation for bigger men? I’m pretty sure this is the first book I’ve read with a fat main male character and we need to do better.
Anyway, I think this was a great ending to a great series that I will read time and time again and never get sick of.
Huge thanks to Netgalley and the author/publisher for an advanced reviewers copy in exchange for an honest review!
Olivia Dade has done it once again! Ship Wrecked is an amazing read with two fat love interests and a long, long, long burn. Maria and Peter have a one night stand before they are both cast in the roles of a lifetime on the fictional Gods of the Gates (which was featured in the two previous books in this series). Maria has had her heart broken horribly and therefore has sworn off relationships, while Peter is head over heels for her. They work together for six years at a remote location, and it's only when GOTG ends that they can truly explore their feelings for each other. Olivia Dade always leaves us wanting more, and this book is no different. I'm a little sad that this is the last in this series, but I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for a advanced reader copy of this book-- Sorry that y'all have to wait until November for it!
I wanted to like this but the body positive focus was a bit over the top at times. It made it hard to connect with the characters when so much time is spent discussing how thick thighs were, or admiring body rolls. I'm all for body positive and was looking forward to plus size representation, but it was impossible to connect to the characters when only thought about the physical and nothing more.
Absolutely loved this book and the fat girl representation. I couldn't put it down and am so happy I got to read it.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
I like the idea of this story and romance, but this book in the series fell a little flat for me. I wanted to like Maria and Peter, but I felt like their characters didn't have a lot of chemistry. The premise is cool, and I love the fat representation, but I struggled to finish this one. I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series and I look forward to reading more books by this author. This one was just a miss for me.
Right after their VERY good one-night stand, Peter wakes up to discover that Maria has fled from the hotel.
And then they are cast opposite each other for a Game of Thrones-esque show, and will be marooned on a tiny Irish island together. For six years.
Six years flies by, and while they haven’t managed to kill each other, they have both been silently yearning. When they finally, FINALLY, get together, sparks fly (and no one is injured by any pickled herring). Both characters experience tremendous growth in exploring and healing from their past traumas, and it’s not just one person who grovels, it’s both. I loved it so much.
It's absolutely criminal that I was given access to this book so early because all I want to do is scream about it to anyone who will listen from now until November. I completely DEVOURED this book. Olivia Dade is easily one of my favorite authors and I think this is one of her strongest books to date. I've loved all of the other Spoiler Alert books in this series but this book really hit different for me. Not only do we get one powerful, self assured, and sexy plus sized female main character but her big beefy Viking teddy bear of a love interest is plus sized as well! I feel like it's so rare to find romance books with a plus sized male lead and this book handled it so well. And the fact that Peter also suffers from social anxiety as well? My heart melted reading this book. I just want to wrap Peter up in a big cuddly blanket and protect him from the rest of the world. Maria and Peter easily make my list of favorite romance book couples. I will be absolutely insufferable until this book comes out and I encourage everyone else to read this book and give it all the hype it deserves!
How is it possible that these books keep getting better and better?!
Ship Wrecked is absolutely magical and the perfect wrap-up to the series that began with Spoiler Alert. We've caught glimpses of Maria and Peter in the Gods of the Gates group chat interstitials in the first two books, and I'm delighted to say that they are all I dreamed of and more. The slow burn is amazing, the supporting characters wonderful and hilarious, and the characters' past grief and trauma sensitively portrayed. Maria and Peter work so hard for their HEA and it is a joy to watch it come to fruition via true vulnerability, hard conversations, bad mistakes and sincere apologies, and mysterious jars of pickled herring. Best of all, the epilogue works as an epilogue for all three books and a happily-ever-after for the entire friend group. I cannot wait to see what Olivia Dade does next!
Many, MANY thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
*First I would like to say thank you to NetGalley and Avon Romance for the ARC for an honest review*
I love Olivia Dade and her stories. I liked Ship Wrecked, but I didn't love it. At first I couldn't bond with the characters, even though I understood their chemistry and pull toward each other. Peter and Maria are both actors on The Gates show that has connected Dade's Spoiler Alert series, and their fatness is a huge factor in the novel due to societal norms about body images. Dade does a wonderful job showing the complex sides of loving being fat and not compromising just for a job,
I had issues with the timeline of the story because there's a time jump that wasn't heavily established with time markers on the chapters, and I was constantly wondering how much time had passed since the last chapter. The book takes place over six years, and I had a hard time with the pacing.
All of this to say, I will be recommending every one of Olivia Dade's books to friends because I love her, her writing, and her characters.
Another plus-sized heroine everyone can root for!
Maria is body positive, sex positive and knows what she wants. When she sees a handsome Viking of a man, she takes him to bed . . . and leaves the next morning without so much as a note goodbye. Peter wakes up to an empty bed and an empty heart. He really thought this one night stand had potential.
Low and behold a few days later they find out that they are cast together in a television show that will be filming on a remote Irish island. Their second encounter doesn't go well, so working together could be a disaster. Peter still has a crush on Maria but has to worship her from afar - even though they work very closely together. He loves her warmth and caring and how she creates a family among her co-workers. Maria's impressions of Peter change and she, too, continues to crush on Peter.
After 6 years of working together, their show has come to an end. Will it be the end for Peter and Maria? Or will they decide to give these feelings a chance? Can they both overcome troubled childhoods to form a bond that will last?
These were great characters and I liked their story. I am over the whole Gods of the Gates thing - (Dade's last 3 books all featured characters on this fictional show). There were short chapters with text strings with the whole group that were meant to be funny, but I just found annoying. It's a small complaint. Otherwise, I love Dade's non-traditional protagonists. It's nice to have some characters with some "meat".
Even though this is a series, you do not need to read them in order. Of the three, the first book - Spoiler Alert, remains my favorite, but this was an absolutely solid romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for my ARC of this novel.
I can't believe I am typing this, but I DNF'd this book. I got bored with the relationship back and forth and the fact that the same obstacle REMAINED the primary conflict for the entire book. :(
I loved Maria and her take no prisoners attitude and how unapologetically and authentically HERSELF, she was. I loved Peter and his absolute obsession with Maria, his grudge and how he learned to be a bit less awkward with people. I loved the development of their relationship! I loved the setting, the side characters, the detail of the show!
However.....there are only so many times that an author can dangle the carrot of relationship resolution in front of me before I lose interest. I couldn't stand reading about some nonsense reason why the exact same thing that was an issue in the beginning, was still and issue so much later.
*********POSSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT*********
******************AGAIN, WARNING******************
*********I AM SERIOUS, DO NOT READ FURTHER*********
6 years with no more progress made, after the initial "oops we didn't expect to see each other again" one night stand, and then we STILL DON'T GET THE RESOLUTION THEN?! No. I'm sorry, but no. After all of that I could've possibly kept going if things were resolved. But no, SAME PROBLEM and poof the characters slink off to their separate corners. I even skipped to the end to see if it was satisfactory enough to make up for the repetition of the conflict but it was not. And Peter literally did not *cough* interact with another women in the entire 6 years while Maria did have some sporadic *cough* interactions which was fine...if after 6 years, they were FINALLY together instead of separated yet again and then together and beautifully happy......and then poof same thing goes wrong and they're separated again.
Dear author, if you happen to read this please know that I truly did enjoy your writing and your characters. But there's a definite limit to how much you can string a reader (and your characters) along before resolution.
The sexual tension, the spice, the not-at-all subtle roast of Game of Thrones season 7, Excellent. All of it.
Olivia did it again! I am absolutely obsessed with this series and this was another excellent edition. Peter and Maria had such amazing chemistry and I loved their dynamic together. Also....was the book maybe setting up its first queer pairing? I definitely hope so and look forward to buying this book/reading the next. Thank you for the early copy!
I adore this series so much and I loved this one just as much as the first two. The relationship took a bit to develop but I enjoyed the story the whole way through.
Thank you to Harper Collins for this ARC!
I absolutely adored this book. It is exactly what I want in a romance novel: something I can read that will make me smile and that allows me to turn my brain off for a little while. Maria and Peter are a great couple and I like that their story spans years as they were actors working on a popular TV show. Their relationship developed under interesting circumstances since they are filming on a remote island as the only two actors with a small film crew. Can you say “romantic tension”?! My only critique is that these two need to learn to communicate, my god. It dragged the plot to a certain degree. However, I think Dade wrote a cute romance novel that has plus-size representation where the plus size characters are desirable successful, and more than just their body type.
This one didn't click for me. Although the premise sounds really fun, I found myself really disliking the main characters. They weren't doing a great job at communicating with each other and let their emotions drive their actions for years! The timeline of the book was also a bit odd. We're in the "past" for longer than I expected, and it left me thinking "I thought this book is about what happens after they've worked together for years..?"
The characters didn't feel very grounded in reality, especially with the inciting incident of the one-night-stand. While I know this book will find its reader in fans of Dade's previous work, it wasn't for me.
