I’ve had mixed results with this series. I enjoyed the celebrity/fan dynamic in Spoiler Alert, and the series’ loving references to various elements of fandom culture. I am also an absolute sucker for slow burn romances, so I was intrigued by this latest entry in the series, despite not loving the dynamic between the MCs in All the Feels.
Unfortunately, I had a hard time connecting with the characters. While I love Maria’s charm, I found Peter’s emotional reserve inscrutable, to the point where I couldn’t understand his shifting reactions to Maria. I had trouble understanding their reasonings for why they can’t be together, reducing the will-they-won’t-they slow burn tension to an extended period of communication issues. Their attraction is undeniable, but difficult for me to understand or feel invested in.
I think my confusion is largely tied to the novel’s pacing. The first hundred pages or so cover Maria and Peter’s one night stand, unexpected reunion at a final audition the next morning, and their six years working together as costars. The different scenes that illustrate their growing intimacy as coworkers feel more like a montage than the delicious tension of a slow burn. A lot of that work happens off-page, or is recalled in flashbacks, with the growing emotional connection between the MCs relies on telling rather than showing. While the scenes where they finally get together are decidedly steamy, I didn’t fully believe the payoff, especially with uncommunicated assumptions and insecurities looming over them. Despite making it over halfway through the book, I didn’t feel compelled to finish it, especially knowing those communication issues would almost certainly drive the final third of the plot. This just wasn’t the one for me.
While this wasn't my favorite of the series, I still really adore Dade's writing. The 3rd act breakup wasn't my favorite thing (I prefer for these things to be due to outside circumstances instead of pigheadedness from the characters), but I adored the characters themselves!
I am obsessed with Olivia Dade and the Spoiler Alert series. I was hyped to have this one in my hands, and while it was fun (and a great romance), it just didn't quite live up to the bar set by the first two books. The chemistry between the two leads was a little spotty at times - I found them to be a little too hot and cold and I didn't love some of the lack of communication happening. Overall, this one was good, but not quite as fun as the first two.
Let me preface this review by saying that I love Olivia Dade books....normally. This is the first one that didn't work for me. The book started out strong. I have absolutely adored the first 2 books in this series, but I got positively bored about 1/3 of the way through this story. First, I didn't like the time jump. There was so much that could've happened prior to the time jump. So much potential for more angst. I enjoy the body positivity rep in this series and this book was no exception. I liked the hero and heroine. What didn't I enjoy? The never ending internal dialogue. SO MUCH INTERNAL DIALOGUE. It was so very boring. I just felt like this story was way too long. I felt like I was slogging through and was relieved at the end. The difficulty that they had to work through at the end was just not necessary. It was weak.
Anyhow, I won't give up on Olivia Dade by any means, but unfortunately this was a 2 star read for me.
Thank you to NetGalley , Avon and Harper Voyager for an advanced reader's copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a sexy, feel good romance about a Swede and an American who have a one night stand, only to be cast in a show that films over the course of a year on a remote island. This could go all wrong, or really right!
I appreciated the unique plot and size/body positivity! Also it is very sex positive. Ain’t no shame in this character game. :)
Sincere thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This one is vastly enjoyable and incredibly original. Two actors have what they thought was just a great one-night stand only to discover that they've been cast in a show that will have them living on a remote island for most of the year. Personalities clash and patience gets tested, but only time will tell if their connection will be able to survive all the challenges of fame.
Maria and Peter have very different personalities, but I loved reading how it's those differences that help them see what the other needs even more clearly than they see themselves. I loved how sure Maria is about her choices and Peter's determination not to mess up a dream opportunity for any working actor. I even loved how it was those things that made their relationship so rocky. It's a story about growing as a person in a way that makes you perfect for your relationship instead of changing who you are just to be in a relationship.
I particularly enjoyed how size-positive it is and how both Maria and Peter's size it's not pushed in your face as the defining element of the plot, but more of a thing that they have to put up with just because some people suck.
Don't let the fact that it's the third book in the series keep you from jumping right in. There are mentions of characters from previous books at events where the cast all gets together, but there is nothing that would keep a new reader from being able to enjoy Peter and Maria's story to the fullest.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Avon for the fun and sexy read!
I'll read anything Olivia Dade writes. What a fun, immersive, thoughtful adventure, plus all the side characters we've grown to love in previous books. A joyous romp.
1. This is such a stunning cover.
2. Ship Wrecked is the perfect combination of everything I look for in a book: incredibly well developed characters, a good laugh (a good cry sometimes), and believable chemistry.
Add this to your TBR immediately.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!
I can only imagine how awkward it is when you find out you'll be working with your one night stand on a remote island for quite some time. It was an interesting way to start a book and their romance. Peter and Maria have a lot of fun banter and interactions before anything starts to happen and I was happy it took awhile for their relationship to develop.
Peter is socially awkward and has a hard time opening up and in many ways just thinks he needs to accept what others ask of him for the parts he gets as an actor. Maria is the total opposite. She's social, outgoing, caring, and knows how to stand up for herself. I loved that she was proud of her body and wouldn't let anyone or anything change her while she was filming.
Peter and Maria's relationship was definitely a slow burn in many ways and I enjoyed seeing their chemistry and them teasing each other. I definitely understand Maria for not wanting anything while they're working that closely together. The spicy scenes worked well with these characters and stories. There were some things near the ending with their relationship that bugged me (I won't say much because of spoilers) and I wish would've gone differently. All in all, I'm glad they get their happily ever after.
Ship Wrecked was a fun book to read, but the time jumps here and there didn't completely feel right at times and made the pacing feel a little off here and there). I did love that author incorporated text messages between the crew again, because their interactions and banter are so much fun to read! I don't feel this series got the strongest ending, but it's one I still definitely enjoyed.
I do not have words by how much I LOVED this book. Literally the perfect lovers to enemies to friends to lovers. I felt so so many emotions while reading this book, I laughed and cried. The love between Peter and Maria was palpable and their journey made me so incredibly emotional. I sincerely hope that we see more of Maria's family because they were so incredibly wholesome. The other side characters in the book were also amazing and so funny. I would literally recommend this book to anyone. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Avon for a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
Ok I was not expecting certain parts of this book! I loved that both main charters were fat which feels different from past books in this series.
I really enjoyd Maria and Peters' story.
From page one i rooted for them. It staarts with a STEAMY one night stand, but unknown to either they are actually about to be co-stars. The Tnsion etween the 2 characters during their filming on a remote island is undeniable. After the show ends they are finally able to explore romantically, Will it end in heart break or will the 2 share a love like you see on film??
As always Olivia Dade knocks another one right out of the park.
This book has a solid plot, Steamy connections, great character development, and such a fun playful banter between characters,
I love all the body positivy and anti-shaming that is represented in her works. These books are truly like a warm blanket for anyone who has ever felt the pressure to be someone they arent because of media or peers aroud you,
I have to say, I was so excited when i received the ARC to this novel - as a plus size woman i LOVE the representation. I was quickly let down and considered DNFing multiple times throughout the read.
I felt that the author consistently told you things without showing you then which made the book boring and fell flat, i wanted to see the growth in the characters so that i could come to like them more than I did.
It’s giving lovers to enemies to lovers again. I did eventually find myself liking our FMC, but overall i find myself bored and missing some details.
It had strong elements to make it a good, lovable read, but overall just didn’t come together for me.
Oh man this was such a cute story about taking a chance on love and I love that there are plus size characters. After Peter and Maria have a one night stand they realize they are co-stars in there next project so they never forget but stay friend except for now 6 years later when the show is ending they finally have another night together. There is still the problems that they can't be together since they don't live in remotely the same areas but can they make it work anyway. Really great story with plus size characters and while it was a little predictable I enjoyed it.
Thanks to Avon and Harper Voyager and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
plus size love interests mean the world to me, especially knowing how well olivia dade writes these characters. We've gotten two beautiful plus size women, but now we have a plus size man as our hero who i ADORE AND CHERISH WITH MY WHOLE HEART. we need more books like this
I loved the sex scenes - they were classic Olivia Dade and what I have come to expect and love from her.
I wasn't a big fan of the reason they broke up. Seemed like not that big of deal. But then again, I'm not an actor so maybe it's bigger than I think. This seemed to create a lot of conflict that wasn't needed and made the story drag on.
I was okay with the 6 year time jump. I've seen a few other reviewers that didn't like that, but I thought it really showed just how long these two had pinned for each other and strengthened that storyline.
I LOVED when they went to each other's homes. That was a nice touch.
I also really liked how Peter grew as a character with his friends/colleagues. He broke down those walls ever so slightly and you could tell that was important and had a big impact for him.
Overall - 3.5, rounded to 3 for goodreads and netgalley. I liked it more than All the Feels, but less than Spoiler Alert.
Thank you Avon books for the earc in exchange for an honest review.
4.5
I adored this book. The chemistry between Maria and Peter was everything. And then add the sexual tension. Wow! I enjoyed the story so much through Maria's point a view.
A big thanks to the publisher and author for giving me an E-ARC.
Always love this author for writing plus-size heroines. It's rare tbh. I enjoyed this book.
The two main characters had a one-night stand and they found out that they are actors in the same show. Both of them still can't forget that one night.
It was cute and spicy. Amazing plot. Tension was palpable.
I really couldn’t get into this one, and by the time I had time to read more of it my time expired. I look forward to picking up a hard copy and diving back into it! Dade is a favorite author of mine and I hate that it took me so long to get into it.
I always adore Olivia Dade’s work writing about plus size heroines. This cover is stunning and this book is just as heart warming.
Maria and Peter can’t forget about their one night stand and now they are both actors on the same show, ut oh?! Will things change? Can they stay friends or will they become more?
This was funny and heart warming; sigh; I love when books are like a warm hug. Maria and Peter are both so interesting and have such a fun dynamic. I really enjoyed their story. I thought the 6 year time jump was a little off, and their third act break up didn’t make much sense, but otherwise I liked this one.
