Romance and puppies? What's not to adore?! Pride and Puppies is the fourth book in the Pine Hollow series, a set of companion novels by Lizzie Shane. This book focusses on Charlotte and George in particular. Dr. Charlotte Rodriguez has a messy track history with men, and is oblivious to the admiration of her Colorado transplant coworker, George. To make matters worse for George, Charlotte decides to enact a "Puppy Pact;" swearing off men (temporarily) and getting an adorable golden retriever puppy, Bingley. With this book you'll find a cozy setting, some adorable puppies, and likeable supporting characters.
If anyone guessed this is going to be cute and sweet romance, you got it right! This is absolutely sweetest with sweetest George who is secretly in love with our girl, Charlotte. Charlotte, after dating series of Darcys, gave up on men and adopted a puppy.
Thank you to Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for this arc in exchange for my honest review
Charlotte and George are two doctors in a cute vermont town who are the best of friends, even if George is hopelessly in love with Charlotte and hasn't been able to tell her.
This was a very cute friends to lovers story. A quick clean romance with no spice except a few well placed innuendos. It was a very cute little escapism novel but my chief complaint is that I feel like we missed all of the flirting. Most of the story was internal monologue about how each character was so nervous to make a move that basically nothing would happen. I wish we had gotten to see a bit more flirting or just sexiness in general.
Overall a super fun quick read that gives off great summer hallmark movie vibes - 3.5 stars!
Thank you Forever Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
- Small town
-Dual POV
- Friends to lovers
- Coworkers
- Jane Austen super fan (aren't we all tho)
This book was cute, clean, sweet, and adorable. I enjoyed a lot of parts of it, but unfortunately I could not connect with the characters. I found the back and forth too much and the romance was slightly unbelievable and not fleshed out enough.
However, if you LOVE Jane Austen, then this book is worth a shot because of the funny references and banter.
You pretty much know exactly what you are getting into with the title. We have a Jane Austen inspired romance, with puppies added in for good measure.
I enjoyed this, it was light and easy to read, but will this stick with me long term? Probably not. I liked this! But it wasn't incredibly memorable.
Classic friends to lovers trope with a Jane Austen inspired story line. Overall the book was fine, nothing that hasn't been done before. It was cute. Set in "Vermont" but honestly could be any small town in any north eastern state.
Pride and Puppies is the fourth book in the Pine Hollow series, a set of companion novels by Lizzie Shane. This book focusses on Charlotte and George, both of whom we met in the previous book, but didn't get to know until now.
Charlotte, blames Jane Austen for being single again. Her unrealistic expectations and failing to find her own Mr. Darcey. She swears off dating and decides to adopt a puppy, Bingley. She goes to her neighbour, and co-worker, George, for dog advice. Charlotte is sure she won't fall for him, because he is kind, sweet, nice and totally not her type. Little does Charlotte know that George has had a crush on her since he met her a year and a half ago, but she is always in a relationship. In her desire for singledom, her and George begin to spend more time together, as friends, and she begins to discover she has feelings for him. What will she do since she has sworn on men and doesn't want to be let down again?
This was a sweet book, that had a lot of focus on growth for both our main characters. They are both pretty insecure in their ideas of love and whether they could be loved and I liked to see both come into their own and believe that they were worthy of love, and the kind of love they wanted. More than the love story, I loved the friendship that developed between Charlotte and George and how their relationship started as friends, and developed into something more.
I enjoyed the side characters and really liked getting to know Charlotte's friend, Kendall and Magda, as well as George's new friends like Howard and Mac. I also thought George's sisters, though not physically in the book, were great additions with the zoom book club meetings and support they were giving him. Of course, the other two side characters were the dogs, Duke and Bingley. Duke was a sweetheart and Bingley was a mischievous puppy. I love that Lizzie Shane adds so much dog to her stories, it constantly leaves smiles on my face!
Pride & Puppies is a sweet book that puts a smile on your face and the occasional tear in your eye. I couldn't help but love and adore this novel. Thank you to NetGalley and Forever publishing for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% mine.
The premise was great for this novel. I love a Pride and Prejudice themed book and puppies. I didn’t like how charlotte was so desperate to fix up George with a girlfriend. I get that she was on a dating hiatus but it was pushing some boundaries as George never asks her to set him up on dates.
George and charlotte taking care of each other was the positive, good interactions and conversation. Any scene with the dogs was a winner!
Overall it was ok. I read it in a few days so it did hold my interest. It isn’t one I’ll pick up to read again.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice; this is a small town, dual POV, friends to lovers romance. Charolette blames all her relationship woes on Jane Austen as she finds herself single…. Again. So she finds herself with a new puppy to channel all of her love into. She starts reaching out to her neighbor for dog advice and second guessing this friend zone she’s kept George in all this time when he could potentially be moving.
A sweet romance more than a steamy one, Pride & Puppies will appeal to Jane Austen fans and anyone who can relate to being a little scared of finding real love. At times it was frustrating that the communication between the two main characters was poor, but their communication issues were realistic given female love interest Charlotte's emotional baggage -- it's hard to communicate well when you shut yourself off from your own feelings. Supporting characters were charming, the setting was charming, and I'm glad to know there are more books in this series. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book!
Honestly this book was pretty hard for me to read. The lack of communication, just made me feel frustrated after every chapter. I hope they stay together; but unless Charlotte goes to therapy more and works through the self loathing/ self sabotaging thinking that she does... then I could see her ruining it again. My favorite character was probably George. I was a little frustrated with Beks, because she seemed a bit selfish in a way, but then it all added up. & I honestly don't think Kendall & Magda were that great of friends to Charlotte. Now Kendall did say something actually helpful at the end; for the most part though, they always seemed to concerned about themselves and like they just dismissed Charlottes issues and questions.
I'm happy they ended up together and were able to actually talk through the things; however, again, the miscommunication and lack of communication throughout the whole book was extremely frustrating. It was like reading about a high school couple.
Such an enjoyable read! Austen fanatics & lovers of puppies will adore this book. Shane beautifully weaves passages from Austen’s novels and each one connects wonderfully to the chapter it has been attached to within the book. The characters are named after Austen characters. They are both similar and different from the models they are busily around. I just enjoyed the book so much that I read it twice!
The FMC swears of men, then meets the male love interest. If you want super steamy, this one isn't for you. Must also love it know a lot about Jane Austen, as there are a lot of references. I really enjoyed this sweet romance.
Very cute premise. The two leads are separate and distinct. Nothing stand-out about it, but it’s a cute story.
Thanks to NetGalley and Forever for the ARC.
Read if you like:
- Pride and Prejudice
- puppies/ pet parents
- dual POV
- small towns
- closed door romances
This one is a sweet closed door romance where the main character after heartbreak swears off men, and then adopts a puppy to fill the void of the heartbreak she is going through.
She then meets the male love interest and starts their sweet courtship. This one is a closed door romance so if you are looking for spice and steam, this may not be the right pick for you in that moment.
This one is very very heavy on the Austin references, so if you don’t love Jane Austin and references this one may be a difficult read.
Heartfelt, light, and fun!
Pride & Puppies is a sweet, engaging tale that transports you to the idyllic Pine Hollow and into the lives of the intelligent, hardworking Charlotte who has finally decided to give up her quest for Mr. Darcy, swear off men completely, and adopt a puppy for companionship instead, and the patient, considerate George who may finally take the risk and act on his feelings for his friend and coworker before his contract is up and it seems more than likely he’ll have to head back across the country to his home state of Colorado.
The writing is cute and playful. The characters are genuine, kind, and supportive. And the plot is an amusing, entertaining mix of friendship, family, community, insecurities, tricky moments, undeniable chemistry, small-town living, and unconditional love.
Pride & Puppies is the charming, spirited, heartwarming fourth title in the Pine Hollow series by Shane, and as a huge fan of all things Jane Austen, especially the Pride and Prejudice BBC TV series (I mean who isn’t smitten with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy), I couldn’t help but adore this novel.
3.5 stars!
This is part of a series, but still worked as a standalone. It was a quick and light read! I thought it was adorable and I appreciated the small Austen references throughout.
Thank you NetGally for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Charlotte Rodriguez is done with men for good and getting a puppy instead! George Leneghan is tired of feeling the new guy in Pine Hollow, VT and considering moving back to Colorado and since his crush on the hot doctor neighbor isn't going anywhere. This is a friends to lovers, second chance at love novel. It's chock full of Jane Austen references and each chapter begins with a quote from one of her books. This was my favorite part of Pride and Puppies since Jane Austen is my favorite and I have been reading her books and a huge fan of regency England for most of my life. The story flows well and the characters are relatable. Their insecurities keep rising to the surface and causing rifts which gets a little irksome but that is real life in relationships! I would recommend to a friend especially any fan of Jane Austen!

He Falls First
Charlotte Rodriguez is single again after falling for another imperfect fit, determined to get over finding her perfect Mr. Darcy she embarks on a self discovery journey to adopt a puppy and stay single.
George, Charlotte's extremely kind neighbor is in love with her and he's decided to finally make a move now that she's single again, not at all expecting it to back fire her to offer to find him someone.
Charlotte and George's story was adorable and was a super quick read for me. Perfect for lovers of small town romance.
This book was so enjoyable. It’s a contemporary Romance about Charlotte, a doctor, who always dates the wrong men on her quest to find her Mr. Darcy. After a disappointing break up, she swears off all men and decides to get a puppy. Who else can you always count on for unconditional love?!?
George, a physiotherapist, moved to Pine Hallow after a serious breakup. He immediately felt connected to his coworker and neighbour Charlotte. But like always, he finds himself in the friend zone, not that it matters since she is never single.
Until she is.
This book was so cute. It’s a friends to lovers, small town, closed door romance with puppies! Each chapter starts off with a Jane Austen quote and I surprisingly really enjoyed that. Both MCs have strong family connections and their sisters are great side characters. Not to mention how entertaining Charlotte’s supportive friend group and all the townsfolk were.
This book is available on Nov. 22 2022!
