Thank you to Forever and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Each chapter has Austen's quotes, which is nice, as this reminds you how much you can relate to Austen novels still nowadays. I love Austen, so when I saw this book, I knew I had to read it.
This kind of reminds me of "Emma", as the main characters, Charlotte and George, act a lot like them.
This love story is for those who like to suffer and adorable puppies for a great happy ending.
Spoilers: How is it that takes that long for a couple to just say: I love you?
Dr Charlotte Rodriguez is single, again, and she blames Jane Austen. After struggling to find her own brooding, swoon-worthy Mr Darcey, she swears off dating and makes a puppy pact instead. She adopts an adorable golden, who she names Bingley (have to keep loyal to Ms Austen!). Her neighbor, and coworker, George Leneghan, steps in to help and give her lots of pet advice and allows Bingley to play with his own Bernese Mountain Dog, Duke. Charlotte agrees with her friends, Magda and Kendall, that George is a Austen leading man level catch. However, she fears he is too nice for her.
This is my first book by Lizzie Shane and I had no idea it was the fourth book in a series. However, it definitely can be read as a stand alone!
Things I loved about this book:
1) George's family - They host a zoom bookclub every month (George and his sisters), need I say anything more. They are close knit and are one of the reasons George is unsettled in Vermont. He feels the tug to return to Colorado to be closer to his family, especially when it becomes clear one of his sisters is having a hard time.
2) Vermont - this book is set in small town Vermont. If you love a small town romance, this book is perfect for you.
3) Jane Austen - Charlotte and her sisters have Austen running in their blood thanks to their Mother. They even host an Austen afternoon tea once a year to remember her by.
4) Puppies - both Charlotte's new puppy Bingley and George's Bernese Mountain Dog, Duke, are main characters in this book. As somebody who obtained a pandemic puppy, it was fun to read about Charlotte figuring out life with a new puppy.
Some of my favourite quotes that resonated with me:
- "She'd never considered how much of her mental energy was going towards relationship stress until it was gone"
- "I know exactly who I am- and yes, I'm a lot, but I'm sick of feeling like I need to be something less or something more or anything else for someone to want me."
- "I know there has been a parade of people walking through your life telling you that you're too demanding and you want too much, but you deserve everything you want."
Overall, I found this to be a very cute, fluffy romance. I read it in a day and enjoyed the banter amongst our main couple, and between them and their friends/family. It would have been a four star but Charlotte's self sabotaging nature and her repeated discussion of George being too nice for her / only doing stuff to make her happy not because he wanted to, got a little annoying.
This book is adorable. I loved the dogs in it and Charlotte reminded me of myself. Feeling like she’s too much for people really hit home. I think a lot of people will relate to those feelings. Especially neurodivergent people. I’m autistic and always feel like I’m just too much.
The writing is great, everything flowed so well and I found myself completely lost in the words. I’m also an Austen fan and appreciated all the references.
My tiny complaint, we didn’t see George fall for Charlotte. He was already in love with her. I would’ve loved to see more from before he fell. The process of him falling. Overall this a cute and fluffy romcom that’s worth a read.
The premise is cute, after a few bad relationships in a row Charlotte is done with men and makes a "Puppy Pact" to get a dog and be done with men. Little does she know that her coworker is the man of her dreams hidden in plain sight.
I didn't realize this was a book that is part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone but the huge supporting cast makes more sense of you've become familiar with them due to previous novels. The Jane Austen bits were cute and would probably be more appreciated by a die hard fan but I enjoyed them. I do wish we would have gotten more sizzle between the main characters after all the lead up the first half of the book! The third quarter of the book was kind of slow and the "woe is me" vibes from both main characters got a bit old before we wrapped up with a happy ending.
Overall a very solid 3.5/5
Charlotte is just DONE with men. She just found out her boyfriend was cheating on her - on Valentine's Day! She decides that she needs love that isn't fickle, so she decides she is taking a break from dating, and falling in love - with a puppy!
George is facing a dilemma. He still doesn't feel that the tiny town of Pine Hollow has accepted him, even though he's tried his best. He can't help but wonder if he should move back to Colorado, where mountains are actual mountains, and he might get a better job. But there's also his wonderful friend Charlotte here in Vermont, who he may or may not be in love with...
Pride & Puppies is an adorable and sweet romance read! I found the main characters realistic, with Charlotte in particular becoming more self-aware as she progresses through the book. George is just a cupcake of a guy who is an amazing friend. They are both petrified of losing the friendship they have built. Miscommunication tropes abound, but are not detrimental to the story, in my opinion. While there were points where I rolled my eyes at the two, the fact that they did talk to each other about things was refreshing!
I especially enjoyed the side characters! The besties are lovely (and I'm guessing the author already has, or is planning, books for them as well). I also enjoyed the antics of the seniors on the Estates; I almost wished there had been more about the talent show!
All in all, a lovely summer read, and I highly recommend this book! All opinions here are my own, and my thanks to Forever and NetGalley for the chance to read this ahead of time!
A friends to lovers romance trope that also has a puppy?? Yes please! The banter between these characters was so good!
Jane Austen, Ted Lasso, & Great British Bake Off references abound in this delightful small town love story. It’s the story of Charlotte, who is fed up by yet another bad breakup. She decides to make a “puppy pact” where she swears off dating relationships, and instead focuses on raising her new puppy, Bingley. The only wrench in the plan is her neighbor, George, who she is growing closer to by the day…
If you are looking for a Hallmark-esque, cozy, low angst love story, this would fit the bill. I really liked Charlotte and George! It’s the perfect winter season book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
When Charlotte has yet another bad experience with a guy she’s dating she decides to swear off men and get a puppy instead and it turns out to be a great decision for a while. Until her and her coworker/neighbour George starting getting close. Should she stick to the puppy pact after all or take a chance on someone?
This was a super cute book!! I loved the idea of it and as a dog owner myself, I can say that puppies really do make everything better.
I liked Charlotte a lot but found her insistence on sticking to this silly pact she made even when she has feelings for George a little annoying. It’s okay to change your mind about something. George was very likeable and the fact that he was a reader and an Austen fan to boot? Love it. I didn’t feel a ton of chemistry between the two characters and thought the friendship was lovely to read but when they first got together it was just a little awkward for me. The story took a while to unfold, a little bit too long for my liking as I already knew they’d end up together and it was just a matter of it happening.
Sad there was no spice and it was only fade to black.
Overall a fun read! Enjoyed the writing style as well.
3.5 stars, bumped up to 4 for good reads!
Pride & Puppies is a cozy romance set in the charming Vermont town of Pine Hollow. Cute idea, adorable puppies. I just didn't connect with any of the characters. She was annoying, he was way too passive. She's given up men, he's loved her from afar.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book. Pride & Puppies was exactly the book I needed for a long day of travel. I loved the banter between Charlotte & George, along with the Jane Austen references. Friends to more is one of my favorite romance tropes. And puppies! Who doesn’t love puppies?
Aw, I loved it! Such a sweet, light, charming story - i loved the puppies, and the characters were so nice.! Iwish i lived in Pine Hollow!
Friends-to-lovers, slow burn romance.
This is a spin-off of an earlier series that I haven’t read, but I don’t think it’s necessary to read them first for this stand-alone book. It’s a sweet, funny romance with great main and secondary characters. If looking for a quick romcom to read, this is a good one.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. Watch for Pride & Puppies to come out November 22, 2022!
Puppies and Pride and Prejudice?! Count me in! Going into this book I thought it was going to be a retelling but it’s more so an ode to Jane Austen’s work in general which I loved! A cute, fun love story mixed with the perfect amount of Jane Austen references. I could definitely see this being made into a Hallmark movie because it leaves you with all the warm fuzzies!
The main characters, Charlotte and George, have great chemistry right from the start. I loved their relationship with each other but also with their siblings. Having two sisters myself I always find it endearing when romance books show the importance of sibling relationships and not just romantic relationships.
This is such a perfectly cozy romance book and I found it so delightful! If you’re a dog person, Jane Austen fan or just want a cute rom com, read this book when it’s out in November! Thank you to the publisher for letting me read this and to Lizzie Shane for writing such a lovely story!
I don't know man, you had Jane Austen and puppies, certainly enough to work with. But the characters have no tension and the MC is a little on the far side of neurotic for my taste.
This was one of the cutest books I’ve read in a long time, and it combined my two favorite things: romance and dogs!
Oh my gosh. Combining two of the best things in the world - Jane Austen and a sweet, baby soft puppy. I absolutely loved this so much. I found myself laughing, tearing up, excited to know what happened next and so much more.
What I really loved about Pride & Puppies was that I actually didn’t feel like I knew what was happening next. There wasn’t a stereotypical piece of the puzzle because i felt like things could go so many ways. I loved the external plots happening, in fact, I must now go and pick up more of the authors works.
The writing in this was beautiful, reminded me of Gilmore Girls in a way and just had me wanting to keep going and keep going. I loved Charlotte and George’s story and I may eventually need to get a doggo named Bingley.
Jane Austin and puppies for the title. had me there. I liked and enjoyed all that i read. I recommend this book to all. It had everything i wanted.
I am simple: give me a rom-com with a dog on the cover, and I am going to pick it up. This was such a fast read and I think that the main element of the story that made me go through the book so fast was this book charm. All the events that were happening in the book were just amazing and the author did an awesome job in portraying the characters, main and secondary. All in all, this book is the perfect escape for fans of romantic-comedies that bring on funny moments at all times!

this book was so cute!! I love any book that involves dogs and this one did not disappoint! I loved the slow burn at first between Charlotte and George. It was so enjoyable watching their relationship slowly blossom. I can’t wait to check out other books by the author!
"He knows you're a sucker for Jane Austen and rom-coms and that the way to your heart is through ridiculously long hikes and buying presents for your dog."
George and Charles were so cute, but man did they take a really long time to figure things out. I liked all the Jane Austen references and quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Do guys really read Jane Austen? and aww he dressed up for the Austen tea party and has a book club with his sisters.
