First of all, I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc of this book. "Artemis Made Me Do It" by Trista Mateer is a magnificent poetry collection that approaches the topic of womanhood in a very raw and unforgivable way. The poems are also accompanied by beautiful artwork that adds to the experience of reading this book. I would also like to mention that the poetry collection begins with a trigger warnings list, which includes death, rape, sexual harassment, blood/gore, grief, emotional and domestic abuse, etc. The sub-topics are incredibly important and the way they are discussed is very touching, the themes of Greek mythology only make the poetry collection more spectacular. Once again, this is a truly stunning book and I highly recommend it to poetry lovers.
*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the free poetry collection*
"Artemis Made Me Do It" utilises mythology to comment on modern day topics and struggles. TW apply for various things, such as rape, sexual assault, violence, etc. The collection is about overcoming trauma too, about channeling your inner power, about finding your magic (again), which was quite wholesome given the dark aspects.
I had some issues with the ARC itself which made it hard to read at times as formatting was way off, some letters were missing and I had trouble really seeing the form of the poems too. I really enjoyed the pictures in there too, they were quite cool but also way over my head.
Overall this was cool, but I did not really enjoy all of it, which might be due to the formatting issues, missing words etc.

I would like to that Netgalley and The Publisher for allowing me to review this book. I really like Aphrodite Made Me Do It, and I was please to hear the author is making another work of art but this time it's Artemis and the cover is beautiful. This is amazing and I did not want this to end. As I was reading this, I picture Artemis at poetry night in a downtown city. I love this.
2.5 stars. I’m so sad I didn’t enjoy this as much as I did the first one. I think this kind of poetry just isn’t my thing anymore. I didn’t like a lot of the artwork and the way my eARC was formatted made it very difficult to read. I did enjoy some of the poems, however, but just a handful. If you like simplistic feminine poetry, you’ll really like this, it’s just not really for me.
THANK YOU NETGALLEY AND THE PUBLISHERS.
I may have screamed a little when I realized I got excepted for this arc. I absolutely love her other book and I was so excited to receive this. I was not disappointed either. This was incredible and I think everyone should read this.
5 stars.
I have not yet got to read Aphrodite Made Me Do It, but it has been on my radar. I decided to start with Artemis Made Me Do It since I received a digital ARC from Netgalley. I think I may end up loving this one more than the original one. The poetry and collage art in this story is inspired by the story of Artemis, and features themes of trauma, female empowerment, healing, and nature. Poems about personal strength and being the person you want to see yourself become. Poems about feeling lost, wanting to give up, but coming home to yourself. Some of the poems are short and sharp ("Here I am; knowing the difference; between honey and the bee. still chasing; what stings."). Some are longer and mirror Artemis's journey. Some are written in to gorgeous woodsy collages.
This book said exactly things I have felt, and had me in tears, feeling so seen. From the hopeless, gut-wrenching poems of suffering ("Woman sacrifices herself of the altar of bad love. Woman pours until she is empty. Woman gives until there is nothing left of her. Woman disappears day by day and there are no search parties and there are no dogs. No one even knows she is missing.") to the more inspiring pieces about self-care and healing, Nikita Gill is correct in the foreword: "This is the wildfire inside you that you have forgotten. This is the wolf that sets you free."
The next one looks like it is going to be about Persephone, I can't wait to see what Trista Mateer does with that story.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
Mateer's collection is focused and tightly-wound with clear aim and even clearer anger. The collages and art pieces incorporated enhance the poems and work well in concert with one another. While the collection does not necessarily break new ground, it does move with fresh purpose and a winning blend of passion and irreverence.
While I typically don’t read this type of book, I did enjoy this one. I thought the authors writing was quite strong and they explored themes of womanhood adequately. Adding in Greek mythology really upped the ante in this book and made it much more intriguing
An excellent follow up to her first work. 'Artemis' is a modern odyssey tackling the ancient power of femininity
I devoured this collection and will revisit it often. Using the lens of Artemis, the nuances of the tarot and personal experience Trista Mateer has written a collection that will speak to many of us. The pieces contained within are a clever commentary on current social norms and resistance to them, what it is to want peace for ourselves, what it is to recover from trauma, what it is to grow up in dysfunction, what it is to make ourselves small when we should be giving ourselves permission to take up space. The collection is written beautifully, it is insightful, it is moving, when I first read it after an absolute mess of a day it was a balm to my soul. It gives voice to so many things that so many go through. I look forward to rereading it often, to keeping it with me to remind me of all that we can be.
Absolutely lovely and heartfelt poetry collection. I really resonated with the peotry and the reaccuring character in the writing. I love the multimedia approach every other page and would definitly recommend it to other women who suffered.

Nothing wrong with it. Just not my type of poetry. More into Mary Oliver and Emily Dickinson. I do think people will enjoy this. The picture collages are a nice touch. I enjoyed the Greek mythology of course. That’s what makes this stand out. I’m just not interested in the feminism and patriarchal topics.
This book is strange in format but wonderful in content. Told from the perspective of Artemis, this collection of poems, songs, and streams of conciousness tell of her dreams, fears, joys, sorrows, frustrations, hopes, and determination.
Regardless of life experience, I feel there is something within this book for every woman to connect to or relate with.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me a free digital copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review.
I was unable to read the galley I downloaded for kindle due to formatting issues. However, I did purchase the published paperback. I would definitely recommend this title. Trista’s writing is phenomenal and extremely relatable. I will continue to support her by buying all her books.
I enjoyed ‘Aphrodite Made Me Do It’ by Trista and I was lucky enough to get a chance to read this one. Like its predecessor, the poems are on the shorter side but still poignant. Womanhood, archetypes, tarot and Greek mythology were themes that worked well together. My favourite was the poems about womanhood; those were the strongest poems. Also, there are collages dispersed throughout the book and I found myself connecting the most to them as they were short, succinct poems on exciting images. Overall, a strong poetry collection that I will recommend to anyone looking to expand their library. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was my first time reading poetry by Trista Mateer, and after reading Artemis Made Me Do It I'll definitely be checking out her other work.
Artemis Made Me Do It is a beautiful collection of poems of varying length, some really short, some longer. My favorite part would have to be the pages of art and collages and because the poems were so different in structure, it never got boring to read. I also really liked the way Greek Mythology was incorporated into this collection.
I'd definitely recommend checking this out but only after checking the list of trigger warnings, which are listed at the beginning of the book.
A sequel worthy of continuing the legacy of the first book. It was harsh and moving and loving in the only someone who sees your darkest parts can be loving. Definitely worth the read, the poetry is well written and moving, and the illustrations/collages are thoughtful.

Extremely honest and brutal yet so powerful and beautiful. This is how I would describe this ARC of Artemis Made Me Do It, which was given to me by Netgalley and Central Avenue Publishing.
“I refuse to make myself small enough
to fit into the cramped box
of your desire.”
As the title suggests, the poetry is heavily inspired by Artemis, the Greek goddess and twin sister of Apollo. However, I think - and it’s totally fair to correct me here - it’s also about people’s experience, especially those who identify or had identified as female before. Despite me being an enby, I still feel the fear, the pressure and all those emotions when I was raised as a girl. Things have happened. Things still happen and the anger which is also expressed in those poems how you have to keep shut, close your eyes— I felt it in the core of myself.
This book will shake you but honestly, it’s great. I liked being reminded how mighty you actually are.
This is a really good collection of poetry that uses mixed media to really push the point home. I hadn't read the first book in this collection but definitely need to now! I look forward to more from Trista Mateer in the future!
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!
I had recently read and enjoyed the first book in this series of poetry collections when I saw this collection was available to request. I was pleased to discover this collection to be just as relevant and hard-hitting as the first. Mateer's style is so fresh and unique and I absolutely love the mixed media pieces scattered throughout the collection. They punctuate the words she has written absolutely wonderfully without detracting from the power of her words.
