"In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free.
But with a criminal justice system with the cards stacked against Black men, Hinton was sentenced to death. He spent his first three years on Death Row in despairing silence―angry and full of hatred for all those who had sent an innocent man to his death. But as Hinton realized and accepted his fate, he resolved not only to survive but find a way to live on Death Row. For the next twenty-seven years, he was a beacon―transforming not only his own spirit, but those of his fellow inmates. With the help of civil rights attorney and bestselling author of Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson, Hinton won his release in 2015.
This is a stunning memoir. It is so dramatic and fantastical that you think it can only be the stuff from movies. Anthony Ray Hinton's story is heartbreaking and inspirational at the same time. In my opinion, this is a must-read for all middle-grade and young adult readers! If everyone had Anthony Ray Hintons love, humor, joy, and spirit the world would be a much better place. "
Absolutely beautiful childrens book. I added this to our library straight away and have already ordered several copies in the store to sell!
I was really excited to see The Sun Does Shine be made into a young readers edition. I read the original back when it came out a few years ago and remember feeling so many emotions for Anthony Ray Hilton. I was excited to give this one a listen because I have three girls that I want raised and hearing stories of inspiration like this one. The young readers edition is the perfect addition to our shelves. A memoir that will move you and make you feel.
