*received for free from netgalley for honest review* i have read a few books from this series, they are not my favorite but i do enjoy them because of i love dogs and cozy mysteries so this is the best of both even if its a little more cop drama than cozy mystery lol
“Holy Chow” finds Andy Carpenter and the gang returning for another daring, dangerous, and delightful adventure with crime and dogs. Regular readers of the “Andy Carpenter” series have followed the characters as they have changed and grown, but new readers will be quickly pulled into the action. As usual, Carpenter is trying desperately to not work, while everyone else has lots to do.
The plot has the expected elements, of course, a dog, a dog owner, and a big problem. This time the dog had previously been placed by The Tara Foundation, and the elderly owner is requesting rehoming for the dog when she dies if her son cannot take him. Things get complicated when the owner does die and the son is arrested for her murder. Carpenter, once again, has to actually work. Since it is for the benefit of a dog, he puts on his best lawyer attitude. It is, after all, all about the dog. If the son did not kill the dog’s owner, then the real killer is still out there. Who did it?
Every “Andy Carpenter Mystery” book is filled with friendly banter and dogs, but the investigation is always focused and detailed. “Holy Chow” has the perfect balance between drama and hilarity. Clues are hidden in the past and in the present, and they are easy to overlook. I read my first Andy Carpenter novel years ago, and enjoy each new adventure with Andy and the gang. For new readers, I suggest reading this book, and then going back and reading the rest in order if you can, but you can also just read any one you can find. Andy Carpenter and the whole gang can always make “things” right.
I received a review copy of “Holy Chow” from David Rosenfelt, Minotaur Books, St. Martin’s Publishing Group, and Macmillan Audio. Each new book is just an excuse to spend time with this group of interesting and funny people. The audio version of “Holy Chow” is narrated by Grover Gardner who excels in conveying the characters, the action, and the humor to listeners.
“Holy Chow” is now available in print, as an e-book, and on audio from independent bookstores, online booksellers, retail stores, public libraries and anywhere you get your books.
A dog, a guy -- he has to be innocent, but can Andy prove it?

This is another good mystery in the Andy Carpenter series with legal antics and raising questions of possible foreign enemy infiltration.
Andy is a wealthy criminal lawyer who would rather enjoy his dog rescue foundation, the Tara Foundation, than practice law. Still, he always gets pulled into a case – or there wouldn’t be a story. In this episode, Rachel Morehouse, who adopted an older Chow Chow named Lion, calls Andy to ask if he would take care of Lion if her stepson won’t, if she dies. A few days later Andy gets a call to attend the reading of Rachel’s Will. When Rachel’s stepson, Tony, is arrested for her murder, he asks Andy to take his case.
Andy reluctantly takes the case and pulls together his investigative team: wife and investigator Laurie, retired cop and investigator Corey with K9, Simon, bodyguard Marcus, finance/ computer wizard Sam, and co-counsel Eddie. The crew is ready to find theories to overcome the circumstantial evidence that points to Tony as the murderer.
As Andy and the team push for clues, some of the witnesses begin to die. Then someone comes after Andy hoping to stop him. Of course, that won’t work with Marcus around, and Andy gets to show his talents in trial once again. He begins to present a story of foreign infiltration that could be scary.
I enjoy the trail of clues as well as the procedures in court in this series…all wrapped in with Andy’s sardonic snark. I enjoy each episode and recommend that mystery fans start at the beginning.
Audio Notes: I always appreciate Grover Gardner as the narrator for this series. He captures the voices of the different characters. The narration enhanced my enjoyment of the book.
Source: June 2022 NetGalley. My Rating 4.5.
After 25 Andy Carpenter books, there are things we've come to expect: action, humor, a reliable cast of characters, and always an adorable dog. These things are all present here. I listened to the audio version and I hope Grover Gardner is the only one who ever narrates these books. His narration brings these characters to life. He does a great job with the whole cast, but he IS Andy Carpenter. This was a great listen. On to the next!

I have become an avid reader and netgalley requester for David Rosenfelt's books and audiobooks. I have found them to be a good read or listen for the cozy mystery category. Holy Chow is the next installment in the Andy Carpenter series. It starts off with the scene of a murder and then jumps to the death of Rachel Morehouse who Andy Carpenter has known for a year when his foundation found her a companion. Andy Carpenter represents her stepson who is accused of murder her.
So far in any of the Andy Carpenter books that I have read, Andy Carpenter always starts off with stating that he is not going to take a case and that he is just going to listen to the person who is being asked to be represented by him. He always takes the case though and this seems to be a very common and obvious theme in all of this books. The character even admits that he usually ends up taking them.
The investigation that Andy Carpenter leads into the death of Rachel Morehouse is a slow burn. There is not a ton of action going on and there is a huge disconnect around the murder you start to read about at the beginning of the book and the death of Rachel Morehouse.
The narrator, Grover Gardner, is easy to listen to. His voice is soothing and fits the narrative and the characters well.
Thank you to netgalley and Macmillan Audio for my review copy. This is my honest opinion.
Holy Chow by David Rosenfelt is the first of his books that I've read, but it won't be my last. Andy Carpenter is a retired attorney who gets dragged into once again being a defense attorney. He agrees to defend the step-son of a murdered acquaintance when the man is accused of the murder. The story was clever and fast paced. I now want to read all the other books in this series!
I was given an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Holy Chow is about Andy Carpenter, who is a reluctant lawyer. In that he only takes a few cases and those are mostly forced upon him. In this story he defends a man that is accused of murdering his step mother. Lots of people are turning up dead. But Andy has to figure out how it relates to his client. I listened to this on an audio book from Netgalley.
Another visit with Andy and his ménage is a summer highlight. All of the usual players are present and focused on freeing another innocent dog owner from murder charges. Is it a formula? Absolutely, but one that includes everything I need for a delicious light read, or in this case, listen: a serious plot unfolded with humor and a few surprises, just enough danger toward the end to keep things exciting, terrific--if by now predictable characters--and the comforting voice and style of Grover Gardner whose narration earns another star from me, bringing the whole up to 5.
I love David Rosenfelt's books. This one was definitely more of what we love. Andy Carpenter is great, but let's be honest, we're all here for his Golden Retriever, Tara. The mysteries are enjoyable and engaging but these books are definitely character driven. I love this low-stress, enjoyable read!
I do not normally listen to Audio books but tried it on this on. The Narrator was excellent and I really enjoyed the book. The story was very good but when I listened to the story I did not take in near what I do when I read the book. I did enjoy it enough that I am going to get the book so I can read it. I was very surprised by the ending and that is another reason to get the book. I loved the chow "Lion", he really held a very special part in this story.
Holy Chow by David Rosenfelt is the story of a sarcastic lawyer who by a turn of events finds himself defending a man accused of murdering his super rich mother-in-law.
The main character has a "wise-guy" attitude and likes dogs more than most people. The story has a nice cast of characters, and enough twists and turns as a legal drama/ mystery to keep you guessing about if the defendant is guilty, if he will be charged, and if there are other things at play.
This was the first book of this ongoing series that I read. Overall I found the story entertaining. The narrator was easy to listen to. Occasionally I'd find myself thinking "Okay, I get it.... the guy is really really sarcastic", but I could see the humor really hitting the spot for some readers. I'd give a strong 3 stars and recommend for listeners who like lawyer mystery novels!
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillian audio production for an ARC exchange for an honest review.
I have listened to most of the Andy Carpenter series of books and have enjoyed them all. Andy’s sense of humor and self awareness are always fun. In this book, Andy is contacted by a woman who adopted a Chow from the dog rescue operation that Andy and his associates founded. She is planning to leave her dog to her stepson but wants to be sure that if he can’t take the dog that the shelter will take him back. Of course the stepson is accused of killing her and Andy is sure something is wrong so, as usual, he sets out to investigate with the help of his ex-police detective wife and the rest of his crew. There are always twists to the books in this series so, although some parts are predictable, they are fun reads
Thank you to Macmillan audio and Net Galley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Fun easy listen. I enjoyed listening and liked the narrator a lot. Thank you to NetGalley for the arc. .
Rosenfelt never fails to entertain with his Andy Carpenter mysteries. Andy is quick witted and sarcastic at the best of times and his banter with all those he encounters is delightful. In Holy Chow, Andy suddenly finds himself with a new case and Lion, a large and lovable chow. Andy gets himself in some pretty wild predicaments, but with the help of his wife, an ex cop and some pretty amazing friends, he had somehow managed to survive his past encounters, but this case puts him in the headlights of some mighty powerful enemies. Will he be able to save his client from a murder charge while trying to save his own skin and find a new home for Lion before it’s all too late? A fun listen from start to finish!
It is absolutely fascinating to me how David Rosenfelt can keep a consistent high quality in this series of now 25 police procedurals - they are still witty, fun and compelling !
In this book we have defense attorney Andy Carpenter still unsuccessfully trying to retire for good since yet another case drops in his lap. Someone he vaguely knows because she adopted a ChowChow through his animal rescue charity, dies and leaves quite a bit of money to the charity so Andy cannot not be involved suddenly it turns out she did not just die, she was murdered, there’s a quick arrest but could that have been the right person, Andy has his doubts and soon a new client ! I love this series for it’s keen insight into legal proceedings and legal thinking and it’s quick witty banter - it is much smarter than the at times cutesy covers or titles would have you believe ! Fun !
This was a fun book. The characters were well developed and it was easy to follow along with the plot line. It was a breath of fresh air from my usual listening choices. The narrator did really well. A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to listen to and give an honest review of this book.
I can highly recommend it!
I'm always happy to get my hands on a new Andy Carpenter book - especially if it's the audio version. This was a worthy addition - reading David Rosenfelt's books is still such fun. The familiar characters are here, with a big revelation about one in particular. The mystery this time is less of a who-done-it, and more of a how can Andy and his team make the client's case to the jury. And of course there's a new dog to get to know and love. As usual, Grover Gardner's narration is perfection. If you haven't read any of the series, you can jump in here to start and not be totally lost, but ultimately this is a series I recommend reading in order because there is definitely a progression of the characters and their relationships.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for providing a copy for an unbiased review.
Holy Chow (An Andy Carpenter Mystery) by David Rosenfelt
Narrated by Grover Gardner
Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Genre: Mystery & Thrillers
Published July 5, 2022
Holy Chow is the 25th book in the Andy Carpenter Mystery series by David Rosenfelt. This can easily be read as a standalone mystery. As much as I want to, I have not read most of the previous books and found this to be easy to jump into.
Andy Carpenter is a want-to-be-retired attorney, who can't help himself when faced with the right case! He is a great sleuth, loves dogs, and is so funny! I actually laughed out loud as some of the things he said! The crime solving was great and I loved how it all comes together!
The narration by Grover Gardner was incredible! He had such a great tone and gets sarcasm!
I can't wait to start reading the other books in the series!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Light and easy, somewhat humorous courtroom drama/ investigative mystery involving dogs and dog rescue as a side plot. Has a slight undertone of old school Private Eye crime mystery, but that could just be the MC's pun filled humor.
Those readers expecting the chow from the title and cover photo to play a major role in the story will be disappointed.
Narrator did a great job voicing the main character's particular diction.
In the book Holy Chow, author David Rosenfelt continues his bestselling Andy Carpenter Mystery series. Once again Andy is coming out of retirement. Rachel Morehouse adopted an older chow named Lion from Andy’s rescue dog foundation. About a year later she calls wondering if Andy would take Lion if she dies. He agrees and forgets about it, until Rachel’s estate calls Andy for the reading of her will. And where Rachel’s step-son Tony is arrested for her murder.
This was a great fun story. The audio-book narration was very good by long-time narrator Grover Gardner. I would recommend this book and the series. I received a copy of this audio-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
