I really wanted to like this book, the basic concept could be great. I feel like the characters should be friends but they just kind of talk at each other you can't really feel the relationship between them. I also feel like I was on information overload and because of that the book seemed to just drag on.
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review
This was a fun ride that made me excited for book two! While there was a lot going on, the world building will inevitably pay off in the next books fo finish out the series. also can we talk about this gorgeous cover
This a fun RomCom read. Tilda and Gil have chemistry and I enjoyed their banter as well as the push and pull of their relationship. I love how things wrapped up but still set up the next stories. It was an enjoyable read overall and I look forward to more in this world.
I really wanted to love this book. I love enemies-to-lovers and witchy books, but this was not it. Tilda and Gil are said to be enemies and rivals, but it is never explained why. So instead of being an enemies-to-lovers story, it felt very insta-love. Also, the entire story was set in an alternative, magical version of our world, but there is no world-building to explain what is different (other than magic and magical creatures). The evil force in this story is apparently a secretive "Council" that is working against the main characters, but they are also never explained and are "taken care of" by a paragraph in the epilogue mentioning that Tilda's sister handled it. The romance was cute and maybe the only redeeming part of this story, but it was very insta-love, which is not a trope I tend to enjoy. Overall, this book was very disappointing and didn't make much sense.
I absolutely loved this story! The Sherwood family has so many interesting characters, and Tilda’s constant fumbles were hilarious! Gil and Tilda together were entertaining, sexy, and a complete rollercoaster of emotions. Witcha Gonna Do was a fabulous story full of interesting characters and entertaining antics, and I absolutely CANNOT wait for Tilda’s sisters stories!
Special thanks to Berkley Romance and Valentine PR for providing a digital ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 2 stars!
Witcha Gonna Do has been one of my most anticipated books this year and I've been impatiently waiting to get my hands on it, so I'm sure you can imagine my disappointment when I say that I didn't enjoy it. This was my first book by Flynn so I didn't have any expectations though I'd heard that the author's romances are usually comedic with lots of laugh-out-loud moments. Sadly, I also didn't really experience that in this book. I have many thoughts but ultimately, I think the potential was there it's just that the execution really didn't follow through.
The story is told in dual first-person POV and while I don't usually mind this, right from the beginning the characters break the fourth wall to directly address the reader... This isn't my favourite narrative style although it did mean the tone of the story was very relaxed and conversational. That said, as a reader, I find this style tricky because I feel like it relies on the characters having a strong and relatable internal voice to be successful. Tilda and Gil were both likeable enough but their voices read as immature and silly, which did make for a fun-time story but because I didn't find the writing very humorous it came across as trying too hard. As a result, I found myself cringing a lot while reading cos the cheesiness was often next-level!
Although this wasn't my preferred writing style to read, it would've been fine if not for my two biggest hangups: the poor worldbuilding and the lack of connection to the characters + their romance.
Honestly, the world-building was a mess and I spent 90% of the read re-reading sections to situate the context often with little success. I didn't know whether this was set in an alternate reality where the supernatural existed openly or if Witchingdom was a secret state within our real world. There are frequent mentions of the Council, Resistance and a powerless zone called The Beyond but minimal context was given about them. To be fair, we do get a bit of backstory regarding the Council but the who, what, and where of it is never properly explored. The different types of magic and spells were also unclear, particularly Gil's family's duíl magic, and I found what little explanation we got was inconsistent and the rules frequently changed. There were a lot of potentially interesting aspects in the Witchingdom, including the different species such as unicorns, trolls, goblins, etc., as well as the different ways magic worked but, IMHO, it was too flimsily constructed to carry the story well.
I also didn't particularly care about the characters and thought the progression of their romance odd. Tilda is the only non-magic-wielding witch in a family of very powerful witches. She's an aberration in the Witchingdom and often finds her most humiliating moments captured in the public eye and broadcasted on WitchyGram. In contrast, Gil is this 'super serious' and hot academic researcher and double agent whose task is to prove that Tilda is really non-magical. Other than the fact he could be smirky, snarky and standoffish around her, there was nothing to explain why Tilda considered him her nemesis; there didn't seem to be any real basis for her hatred of him. And while I'm all for steamy romances, their constant horndog thoughts and ogling of each other (followed by them immediately telling their selves off for said ogling) were so constant and in your face that it got tiring to read what was essentially the same scene/dialogue repeatedly. The horniness really escalated from 0 to 100 from one minute to the next within the second chapter, I had to do a triple-take and re-read the scene a few times to see if I missed a cue (I didn't). They couldn't seem to make up their minds about anything—from hating/lusting after each other to Gil keeping life-altering secrets from Tilda. Their communication was so poor that I'm surprised they managed to get on the same page by the end of the story!
The ending, while ultimately satisfying with the HEA between the characters, was unsatisfying when it came to the plot. There was a lot left unaddressed, particularly in relation to the Council, and Tilda's reaction to her whole life essentially being a lie was very lacklustre. I wanted to see just a bit of how she learned to control her magic, how the public received the news that she's actually a super powerful witch, and how the Council situation was handled. It was hinted that this last aspect will probably be addressed in future books involving Tilda's sisters as it's a longer storyline, and this might just be my personal preference, but if that's the case it would've made more sense to not have an epilogue five years down the line when everything is already neatly resolved.
Overall, I'm just very sad that this didn't work for me. I was hoping to get the cute paranormal rom-com that this cover projects but sadly, that was far from what this story delivered. I'm not sure what Flynn's other non-paranormal romances are like but if the writing style is similar to this then I'm afraid that she might just not be the author for me!
This one was a departure for me. It’s a romance built into a witch world (thus not my normal fare), where Tilda Sherwood tries to find her place in her family only to discover that she truly belongs. It’s fun. It’s lighthearted. If you like a bit of make believe in your story and you love romance then this one is for you. Thanks to NetGalley for the early read.
If you’re looking for a fun and a little suspenseful paranormal read, pick this on up!
It follows Tilda and Gil though their witchy world, where you’re trying to figure out who’s on who’s side. While also watching the sparks fly between Tilda and Gil. Tilda is believed to be an outré (a witch with no magic) and typically finds herself in unusual and slightly embarrassing situations. And as of late Gil has been there to add to her mishaps & humiliation.
I really enjoyed how this one played out, and each chapter kept me wanting more, and hoping for a Tilda and Gil HEA.
Enemy-to-lover romances are always a tad bit crazy it seems. I mean, how can they not be, with all of those feelings racing around? Love. Hate. Animosity. Jealousy. Love…
This one is a tad crazy too! Flynn weaves a story full of magical secret societies that admittedly are a bit tough to keep track of. We get an insta-love setup but are really not sure why the frenemy feelings exist other than she has a major crush on him.
But the story in itself is fun, wacky, hot, and steamy, just like we like it! The characters could have been a bit more developed in terms of the backstory, but there is plenty to enjoy and have fun with as you dive into the magical life of Tilda, her icy family, and her hot crush, Gil. Plus, it sounds like there is a setup for another book to come…
Overall, Witcha Gonna Do? is an enchanting read set in an imaginary world filled with interesting characters. It just needs a bit more refinement to bring it all together.
A different kind of rom com from Avery Flynn. Her style is still ingrained in the characters with their sass, sexual innuendo and quirkiness. A series about witches I thought for sure was going to be the cozy mystery type, even the cute cartoony cover gave off the vibe. However, it’s even better than I expected. Tilda has a secret that she doesn’t even know about but Gil is determined to figure it out. He’s on a mission to help his family and that means digging into Tilda’s family through her. What starts off as a meet cute gone wrong turns into a heist/ love on the run storyline. Even though this is a bit different for Flynn she maintains all her usual elements: banter, sexy times, strong women, flawed men and intrigue. It appears this will be a series about Tilda’s other sisters. I was excited to read an early copy through NetGalley and have provided my review voluntarily.
Wow, this was a real roller coaster of a book! Tilda starts out just trying to find a decent guy to date and ends up saving the world -- sort of. I mean, it is a bit complicated. There is some serious world building in here; magic is real, and so are shifters and witches and trolls. The rules for this world are very different, and even Tilda doesn't understand all of them. I had no idea what was coming next! That made the book really hard to put down.
My favorite part of the book was the humor, though. Both Tilda and Gil talk to the reader, and their thoughts are so snarky and funny. Their banter is also fun. Several of the secondary characters are seriously snarky, especially the unicorn shifter. My second favorite part was how much Gil respects Tilda, even when he has to hide it. He is a very good guy, and their relationship is adorable.
I am definitely going to be reading the rest of this series because I have a lot of questions about what happens next. I also want to know what happened between Leona and Erik.
I loved this fast paced book about a witch who thinks she does not have powers. She is part of a very powerful witch family. Gil is set up with her on several blind dates. She doesn't like him at first but can't help finding him attractive. Fortunately, his interest is genuine although his motives were definitely suspect initially. Her world gets really messy when she makes a magical error that could be disastrous. She learns to accept help from her old and new friends. Such a fun paranormal adventure!
Witcha Gonna Do by Avery Flynn was a fun and fast book about a witch who doesn’t believe she has powers and the agent who’s been sent to find out her secret. Tilda and Gil definitely don’t suit but after being thrown together multiple times they tentatively come to a truce. This was fun witchy paranormal romp that if you don’t take too seriously is quite enjoyable!
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!
Could it possibly get any worse than having absolutely no magical abilities when you’re a member of the most powerful family of witches ever? Yes, it good. This book was messy but in a way I enjoyed. It's definitely enemies to lovers, and it was A LOTT of back and forth. However, Gil and Tilda had great banter and off the charts chemistry. Also always always always pleased with a curvy character! This was the perfect October read.
Thank you #netgalley for an early read of #witchagonnado
I loved the evil forces they were fighting against! Teaming up against their nemesis. I love the blind dates, secret agents, and the curse. A layered plot. The cover is also SO cute!
I just felt there was a lot happening in this book and so much felt unnecessary. But if you love enemies to lovers, dual POV, and a witch romance...definitely give this a read!
The first thing that caught my attention was the cover. Im obsessed with it. Sadly I didn’t quite love this book as much as I do the cover. I had a hard time getting through the book and connecting with the characters.
I received a gifted galley of WITCHA GONNA DO? by Avery Flynn for an honest review. Thank you to Berkley Publishing and PRH Audio for the opportunity!
WITCHA GONNA DO? follows Tilda and Gil. Tilda is a young woman born to a family of powerful witches without any magic of her own. The family’s shame is strong and she must find ways to live in a magical family and a magical world in a very human way. She’s making the most of her life, putting herself out there with the help of a matchmaker, but she doesn’t understand why she keeps getting set up on blind dates with Gil, the absolute last person she wants to spend time with.
Gil is a bit of a know-it-all, but when Tilda accidentally curses her entire family in a very spectacular fashion, he’s got the power she needs to try to set things right. With a cast of magical misfit friends, they must seek out what they need, but Gil also has some motives of his own that have drawn him into Tilda’s orbit with more questions that need answers.
This book was a fun and quick read. It is written in a very conversational tone, with the narrators speaking to the audience. I found some elements to be a bit repetitive, but overall I really enjoyed the humor that came particularly in Tilda’s chapters.
The cast of characters included a wide mix of magical creatures, each with power, secrets, and mishaps of their own. This book does take on a lot between the romance and the fantasy elements but it made for a quick, action packed read.
WITCHA GONNA DO? is available now!
4.5 Stars
I'm clearly in the minority with this book, but I truly loved it. Light-hearted, funny as all get out, some angst driven steamy scenes, and a few action packed situations that kept me laughing throughout this book. Loved Tilda and Gil, the situations they got themselves into were something else, and the misfits were truly great witch friends that had Tildas back. Full of witchery fun, I'm very much looking forward to the next book with Leona and Erik.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book.
The writing style was not for me in any capacity. I really wanted to like it but after attempting to read the opening few chapters it was clear this story was not going to click with me.
I struggled with the amount of side conversations with ones self. I love the cover but the writing just didn't work.
In this enemies-to-lovers story where two nemesis' have to work together to set a mysterious spell to rights, romance is bubbling and brewing between them the entire time, Gil and Tilda have zero chance of not falling in love.
Witcha Gonna Do is Flynn's brand of comedy mixed in with a brand new paranormal world. Tilda and Gil move about in a social construct that is fresh and made this story unique.
Tilda is part of the most powerful family of witches, but unfortunately she is the one witch who doesn't have any powers. Unless you count her social media skills.
Whereas Gil is from a witchy family that has been banned for the use of their magic powers. His backstory is unique in its own right and I loved how Gil and Tilda mashed together.
While Witcha Gonna Do is a brand new world for Avery Flynn there were some points in the book that drug by. However, I feel books such as these deserve a little grace, especially in the beginning. Creating fiction is hard, but creating a paranormal world where everything is entirely made up, I feel, is even harder.
Overall, this book is sort of silly with romance wrapped around the story, but it's a nice escape, which is what reading is all about.
