This was good all the way through until the end which I felt was rushed and kind of came out of nowhere. Very frustrating.
What a suspenseful thriller! Mary Kubica has captured my attention again keeping me on the edge of my seat. Nina and Lily are friends and teachers at the local high school. Their husbands are friends but from different levels of professions. Nina's husband, a neurosurgeon, Dr. Jake Hayes is missing. When Lily's husband, Christian, comes home one evening, he finds Lily distraught over an altercation that happened between Jake and her.
With only a partial truth, comes more lies and deception and still a missing husband. Nina goes to the police and asks for assistance but tries to piece together his disappearance herself. She is under a lot of pressure and guilt over her and Jake's fight before he walks out the door.... Plus, taking care of her ailing mother.
This incredible depiction of betrayal goes deeper than the eyes and heart can fathom. It's amazing what people will stoop to hide the truth and how friends can sometimes be your worst enemies. I did not figure this one out.
Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this incredible ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Wow! Wow! Wow! This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I devoured it in less than 24 hours. I have read many of Mary Kubica’s books and loved them all. This was no exception. It started off strong and kept me guess and wondering until the very end. Great quick read for thriller readers.
As unbelievable as it may sound, this is the first Mary Kubica book I have read, and I have definitely missing out.
One night Jake doesn't come home, leaving his wife Nina worried, but pretty certain he is just so mad at her after their recent fight that he decided to not come home. Only it turns out that one of her good friends, Lily, was the last to see him alive. Lily shares that interaction with her husband, Christian and they decide to keep quiet. What follows is a web of lies that is impossible to overcome.
I devoured this one, the pages flew by and I couldn't wait to see how it ended, although it did seem like a clear cut story. Of course it wasn't and I was completely surprised by the ending There were a few red herrings, perfectly placed and a solid distraction.
I can't wait to read more by her.
Ok Mary Kubica - you have my attention once again. After a couple of sub par plonkers, you have more than delivered with this latest read.
Two upper middle class couples with secrets aplenty play a giant game of cat and mouse when one wife may have killed the others husband. Suspense and intrigue build almost from the jump and this completely bingeable book had me on the edge of my seat until the final twist really caught me off guard.
Well fucking done. 🤌🏼
Just what constitutes a "nice" couple.
Christian and Lily are the nicest couple until something happens and they turn into a couple who would do anything to save themselves no matter who they hurt.
We meet Christian and Lily both happily married and friends of Jake and Nina whose marriage isn't all that happy.
Lily and Nina met at the school where they teach, and both couples became close.
One day Jake never returned home, and Nina thinks it's because of the fight they had, but Jake doesn't answer his phone and doesn't come home.
Where could he be? Lily might know since she was the last one to see him alive, but no one knows that.
JUST THE NICEST COUPLE had me completely engaged, and I couldn't wait to get back to the book.
Secrets are kept, lies abound, and lots of twists and turns in Ms. Kubica's newest thriller that you won't want to miss if you are a fan.
It's a good one!! 5/5

Just like any great thriller, I found myself sucked into this book each time I picked it up. Told from two perspectives, I did not know who to trust, which definitely kept me on my toes. And like most thrillers, this is hard to review without giving anything away. So, I’ll leave it this way - this was my first book by Mary Kubica but definitely won’t be my last!
Omg what a suspenseful read!! I was at the edge of my seat rushing through this book because i needed to know what was going on!!! Where was jake! Was he dead?? And who do i trust????
There were so many times i said ok one more chapter… 😅 who needs sleep.
I loved the bond between Lily and Christian and he was such a great husband… but i did not trust Lily. 😬
There were so many points where i held my breathe for what was going to happen next. And then the twist and hit and I’m like oh sh@t!!
Like 5 pages before it was revealed, i was like wait… i know! So clever!
My only feedback that’s not so wonderful is i think there were a bit too many unnecessary details… but in the grand scheme. Super minor and didn’t take away from the joy of reading it.
Loved this book!
Thank you to NetGalley, Park Row, and Mary Kubica for the advanced copy of Just the Nicest Couple in exchange for my honest review.
When I tell you I absolutely could not put this book down! I loved the pacing, the mystery, and the dual narrators. I love when we get to experience scenes in a book from the mind of multiple different characters.
This would have been an easy 5 stars were it not for the ending. I don't want to spoil it, so I'll just say it could have been the perfect ending without one added element that I feel was not necessary. It really, REALLY bummed me out that it took that particular direction.
Nevertheless, I will continue to read literally anything Kubica publishes!
this was a fun read, and I can’t say that I’m surprised after reading, an absolutely loving, 𝑳𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈! in the story we meet Lily and Christian, who are married and also Nina, who is married to Jake. Kubica organizes these chapters in multiple perspectives which allows us to hear from Lily, Nina, and Christian. the story opens with Lily acting strange, and Nina finding out that her husband is missing. It then becomes a cat and mouse suspenseful read of trying to figure out what really happened to Jake.
I wasn’t sure exactly who did it but I think Kubica did a great job with her reveal at the end. I loved the laid back writing style— it was perfect for the days I wanted something easy to read!
Nina and her husband Jake have a huge fight. The next day, he leaves for work and never returns home. Meanwhile, Nina’s friend and coworker, Lily, admits to her husband that something traumatic occurred between Lily and Jake on the day of Jake’s disappearance. What happened to Jake and who is responsible?
This page-turning read for escapist enthusiasts explores the lengths people will go to protect their loved ones.
The Good Girl was the very first book of Kubica’s I read and I have been a huge fan ever since. I was excited for the opportunity to read Just the Nicest Couple, but I have to say I was a little disappointed in this one. The writing was not up to par with her previous books and the story just seemed forced and at times unbelievable.
I will not give up on Kubica though, she is a very talented author. Thank you NetGallery and Park Row Books for my ARC.
I have been a fan of Mary Kubica since I read Pretty Baby and have enjoyed many of her books since then. Unfortunately, Just the Nicest Couple missed the mark for me. This book just fell flat. The story line felt very drawn out and there was very little meat to the story. The twist was easy to figure out well before the ending of the story. The whole time I was waiting for there to be something more but nothing ever surfaced. Being from the Chicago suburbs, I always enjoy the setting of Kubica's books. I look forward to reading the next Kubica book and hope that it packs a bigger punch than Just the Nicest Couple. Thank you to Park Row Books for providing me with an advanced copy of the book.
When Nina and her husband get into a fight and he doesn’t come home, she becomes concerned. But what she doesn’t know is that her good friend, Lily and Lilys husband Christian are aware of her husbands whereabouts and are holding on to a secret that could change everything. As the stories unfold and the lies continue to grow, their lives become even more entwined and entangled in stories and lies. Add a shocking twist that nobody sees coming, and you have an excellent blend for a psychological thriller.
A new thriller from Mary Kubica, Just the Nicest Couple keeps the reader on their toes as this novel explores just how quickly a cover up can spin out of control.
As Jake Hayes turns up missing, Nina first thinks her husband is off blowing off stem from their recent fight. At the same time, Lily, a coworker and friend, confesses to her husband that she may have been the last person to see him alive and it ended with self-defence. We see just how far her husband is willing to go to help cover up her crimes.
I couldn’t put this book down! Highly recommended for thos that enjoy suspenseful or physiological thrillers!

Just the Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica
I enjoyed this light, escapist read during a recent busy week. But, I must confess, the twists and turns were semi-predictable. And I wanted the characters to snap out of their obliviousness and confront their situations head-on!
How far do spouses go to protect one another? Lily and Christian are *just the nicest couple.* Until their friend, Jake, disappears and the couple hides knowledge of his whereabouts from his wife, Nina.
Not my favorite by this author but still a fun read. Thank you to Net Galley and Park Row for the advance copy.
Just the Nicest Couple is a thrilling domestic suspense that follows two couples. I was extremely enthralled with the story, wanting to know the reason for the husband's disappearance. Unfortunately, the story began to fall flat and I figured out the twist pretty easily. I could chalk it up to foreshadowing, but it seemed pretty obvious. Not many of the characters are really likable, and I knew that someone had to be lying. A good story, although repetitive, it was a fun quick binge of a read for me on a Sunday afternoon.
A slow burn domestic thriller - exactly what I’ve come to expect from Kubica. I found it equal parts predictable and surprising, but which I enjoyed; the book went where I expected and wanted it to, but I was also surprised by the final twist and how it ended. If you are a fan of Kubica already, this book was definitely for you
There isn’t a single book by Mary I’ve read I haven’t loved. The second I saw this posted I had to request and was thrilled when I was approved. Although local woman missing is still my Favorite this was a great read and I would definitely recommend it. Mary imposes every insidious one on passive, unassuming Nina Hayes. I think the ending could have been a little bit more satisfying. I feel as if Mary is underapperciated she writes amazing pieces. I doubt many readers will see that nice little twist coming near the end.
Mary Kubica doesn’t disappoint with her newest book! When a husband goes missing, the author doesn’t waste any time in creating a story filled with suspicion and mystery. There are times when you are saying to the characters, no, don’t do that…or, what are you thinking? Mary Kubica is just that good in reeling you in and having you relate to the characters. There are twists and turns, and you try to figure out what has happened before the twist is revealed. This is a good, respectable thriller.
