Holy swoony tension! From the first encounter to the last page this book was filled with toe-curling, sigh-worthy chemistry and tension. I may or may not have, either shouted or whispered, at several different points in the story “just kiss already!” And yet all that tension and build up just made the ending that much sweeter and better. Marc and Rhi’s love story has many classic elements, and a few new aspects I enjoyed very much.
The beauty of a book written by Jen Geigle Johnson are the fascinating historical facts woven throughout an engaging fictional story. You start in the wilds of Wales, then taken to the heart of London and the ton, then swept away to the charm of Oldenburg. From Welsh mines, to Gentleman Jackson’s, to crowded ballrooms, to boat trips and races, and to espionage, this story takes you on an international adventure.
This book (and series) is so interesting to me because it is set in one of my favorite time periods, regency, and yet contains royal elements outside of the British monarchy. Now I am anxiously waiting for the rest of the Oldenburg princes’ stories.
This was an exciting story that drew me in from the first page. The main characters were very likable and believable. This story was a slow building romance that kept me entertained and enthralled as Rhi and Marc came to know each other and their feelings for each other.
It had all the elements of a good story, suspense, unpredictability, romance, and adventure. It was interesting to learn a little about the history of what was happening in the world at that time.
This was a wonderful adventure with only sweet romance and love portrayed. Nothing offensive. I highly recommend this book.
This was SO good!
Mean uncle, spies, love, and a little family mystery-what’s not to love?!
Best part: the card game and the almost touch…oh wait, maybe when she came downstairs and he practically growled that she couldn’t wear that dress…or maybe the conversation on the way to London…or… yup, too many “best scenes” :)
This book is the third in the series about a country called Oldenburg and the princes of this country. Each book is the love story of one of the princes. This one is about Marc Wilhelm, Prince of Oldenburg, who comes to Wales to claim his bride. Rhianna Davies has lived her whole life in Wales. Living under the tyranny of her Uncle, because both her parents have died, she has been expelled from the family home and is relegated to living in a small hunting cabin. The workers at the family mine have known her all her life and assist in providing food and support. Neither Marc nor Rhianna want to marry because they have their own plans for the future. This story has intrigue, spies, danger, and adventure. It is a heart-rendering story about how parents love and care for their children. I really enjoyed reading the next in this series and look forward to additional books about the other princes.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are voluntary and unbiased and are completely my own.
A Tenuous Betrothal is the third book in a series but can be read as a standalone story. I have been struggled over the last 24 hours to decide how to review it, as it was a mixed bag for me. Let me start with the positive points. This book has an intriguing premise and strong, interesting characters. I also liked the fact it was not instalove and, instead, the romance between the two developed at a believable pace throughout the course of the story. I had no issues with the prose, which was a readable and free of any glaring errors, but the place I did struggle was with suspension of disbelief over some of the action. In these kinds of stories, I am willing to allow the odd far-fetched plot point in the name of romance, but there were certain moments where I couldn't make myself easily accept what was taking place. I don't want to risk spoilers, but there was one moment in the middle of the book that involved news and people dashing back and forth between Wales and London, and the timeframes in which this was accomplished did not seem doable to me, given the time period and transportation options available. It really yanked me out of the story and then continued to irk me until the end of the book. But, that was my only complaint, and while it bothered me, other readers may not find it such an issue. If you like slow-burn historical romance and don't mind a little suspension of disbelief you are likely to find A Tenuous Betrothal an enjoyable read. It gets 3.5 stars from me.
*4.5
This was a fun read. I liked that we got to see them build a genuine friendship and that is what their relationship was built on. Now on that note I would have liked to have more than two kisses but I still had a good time.
I received an arc through netgalley.
Thank you to NetGalley, Jen Geigle Johnson, and Covenant Communications for providing this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was pulled in from the start and not disappointed! I loved the chemistry between Rhi and Marc with their strong personalities. Rhi was a very strong female lead. I caught myself holding my breath multiple times in this story. I simply had to know what was going to happen next, it was hard to put down.
I would 10/10 recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction and romance. Can’t wait to read it again!

DNF 20%. Unfortunately the writing style is a bit too surface level. I'm not drawn into the story, and everyone feels very young. I wanted to love this one. I think I tend to expect this type of writing from contemporary romance rather than historical, so it's a bit of a letdown in that regard. Others might enjoy it though!
This series of Oldenburg princes has pulled me in from the start, and this one did not disappoint! I have really enjoyed getting to know the characters and their depth. Rhi and Marc are strong personalities that match well. It is also so much fun to go on adventures traveling and hearing about the different countries they visit! You don't know how this one will end, it's refreshing with unpredictability.
Jen Geigle Johnson crafts an intriguing new installment to the Royal Regency series!
Rhi makes for a wonderful lead as a strong and intelligent woman looking to make life easier for the mine workers on her family’s estate. She has a heart of gold and is not afraid to express her opinions.
Marc is all the things a Prince of Oldenburg should be. Handsome, and chivalrous, but known as the most serious out of his siblings, there is nothing he will not do to keep his people and family safe.
Both characters were engaging and complimented each other well. The challenges they faced in their relationship were realistic and added some drama to the plot. The royal family of Oldenburg also brought in plenty of heartwarming moments with their antics of trying to pair Marc and Rhi together.
Romantic, action-packed, and filled with historic context, A Tenuous Betrothal makes for an awesome read!

Rhianna's uncle banished her from the home because of her advocacy for the miners in her community and the poor working conditions. Now she lives alone in a hunting cottage.
Much to her surprise, a handsome prince comes to the rescue. An addendum to her father's will was for her to join in marriage to a prince of Oldenburg. He's doing his duty. She wants to marry for love. They agree to hold off until she can marry a man of her choosing.
This is a sweet story of friendship growing to love and the long journey of figuring out what they want and where the future lies for them both.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review!
The cover is quite inviting and has a regal presence about it. The storyline takes you to another period and may even allow ones imagination to envision just what it may of been like for them had they been in the same sh0es as the main character. Overall, I found it to be quite an entertaining and amusing read. Definitely would recommend people to read it for their own experience.
Wow! this is the third book of this series about Oldenberg Princes, and this one was as good, if not better than the rest.
Rhianna is alone, her family gone, her cruel Uncle has come to take over the land and mines her family worked so hard to create and has made decisions that are harming the people. He has banished her out of the house and left her with ho resources. But never fear, there is a plan in place by her Father that allows her to help her people and herself, even if it includes a betrothal to someone she has never met!
Rhi is a strong gal, feisty and impetuous. She has a very strong desire for all that is right to be done, and is willing to do it herself if need be, and usually does not wait for help. Marc, one of the Princes of Oldenberg, has been sent by his Father, the King, to help her out as a favor to Rhi's father. Marc is secure in his position and power, he understands how to deal with bullies, and is loyal to his core. As he is fulfilling his duty, his heart and life will change. This was a lovely story, the teasing and repour of the characters is great. Their strong wills and sense of right were wonderful to see in a world that doesn't abound in that trait right now. We met a few more brothers this time around, and really saw some personality traits that will make waiting for the next book to be hard. I can't wait for the next one!!
I really enjoyed this book! The characters were all really engaging and the plot was interesting with a nice historical context as well. This is the first book by thus author I have come across, but I definitely plan to check out more by her!
Wow what an awesome Wow what an awesome story, filled with lots of drama, love, and holding your breath kind of story, awesome storyline. Big thanks to you Jen for this awesome story.
The attractive cover caught my eye and drew me to this wholesome Regency romance. Third in a series but I read easily as a stand alone. Rhianna (Rhi) Davies has lost her place after her parents deaths. An uncle inherits her family mine and he tosses her from her home to live in a hunting cabin. Marc Wilhelm, Prince of Oldenburg arrives to claim her as his betrothed. Her father and his (the king) were long time friends and they agreed in writing that if Rhi is unmarried at his passing one of the kings sons will marry her. Marc has been sent to retrieve her.
Prince Marc does not want to marry at this time. He feels his duty is take her to London on the chance she will find someone to marry and if not take her to his country and see which of his many brothers might interest her. Of course they are attracted to each other and friendship grows. But Marc is firm that as head of security for his country he isn’t in a position to take a wife.
I found the story entertaining and well written. I liked Rhi’s concern for the miners and their families. I found the London scenes entertaining and liked the brothers too. I was less interested in the spy story but it fit for the time period and helped explain Marc’s reluctance to take a wife. I need to go back and read the other books in the series. For anyone who enjoys clean or proper historical romances.

I absolutely love this series! I think this book is my favorite so far, and that is saying something because I have loved them all. Marc is a deliciously complex character. He is so devoted to his country's safety and sometimes puts that at the forefront to the detriment of other things, like his love life. Rhianna is a strong, capable, loving and kind woman that wants what is best for her people as well as others she comes in contact with. Meeting more of the Wilhelm brothers was such a treat. I can hardly wait for their stories. I would highly recommend this book and series.

This book had me hooked from page one. Rhianna has just lost her father. Due to her uncle's lack of any kind of sympathy, she is living in the hunters cabin. Rhi, is rescued by Prince Marc, who has an updated will of Rhi's father. With Marc's rescue, comes the start of a friendship and an adventure. This book has all the feels, I loved Rhi and how strong and determined she is. This is such a fun series, I can't wait for the next one.
