I just loved Little White Fish and the Strange Thing! Not only are the illustrations adorable and colorful, there’s a cute story to match.
Little White Fish is the perfect board book that will introduce the young ones to different sea creatures and plant life. An added bonus are the fun and engaging games at the end that promote an open dialogue. Five amazing stars.
I received a digital ARC from Clavis Publishing through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
Thank you Netgalley and Clavis Publishing for providing me with this copy. I am grateful but my thoughts are my own.
Little White Fish and the Strange Things is a book about senses for younger readers to learn and explore their enviroment. With pages full of cute characters, colorful illustration and some activities I can see this book will grip children attentions easily and become favourite one.
This picture book tells the story of a little white fish who discovers a boot under water near his home. He uses his senses to try to figure out what it is and also calls in his friend a turtle, snail, octopus and seahorse to help him solve the mystery. With limited text and detailed pictures, this book will be relatively easy to read. The font is a bit stylized and may be a little challenging for some struggling readers to decipher, but it is relatively clear and usually is black on light blue background. I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 3-7 range. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for the eARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's book. It is bright and colorfun, and the story was ok. I actually liked the activities better than the story. But still it is a 4 star.
The cover and title of the book had me very curious about the story. Moreover, I had the opportunity to read other titles from Guido Van Genechten who had been a success with my little one.
This is a nice book to teach toddlers the different senses and how we can use them to understand the world.
The illustrations are beautiful!
I recommend this book to families with children aged 2 and over.
Thank you Netgalley and the author (Guido Van Genechten) for making this book available in exchange for an honest review.
A sweet simple story about senses, Little White Fish and the Strange Thing has Little White Fish finding an old boot at the bottom of the ocean. He does not know what it is, nor do his friends, but they all use their senses to try and figure it out. A good senses book that is a step above a toddler introduction to the senses.
My toddler and I absolutely love this adventure with little white fish! It’s so silly that the item is a boot, but my toddler recognizes it and giggles when they taste it and smell it! I love the use of all five senses and have incorporated that much more into our exploration since reading this book.
A whole gamut of undersea animals examine something that's ended up in their water, and because they're interacting with it using all the senses – touching it, testing it for taste etc – we get to learn about them ourselves. Some very young-pitching activities after the brief little story add a little bit extra. It's a nice young read, giving us a lesson without declaring that that's what we're here for.
A very short and cute storybook about a little white fish and his other sea friends finding a boot and guessing what it is. The end of the book has a few games such as spot the differences and a maze game. It’s cute but it’s very short and my toddler nephew would not really care for it, so I give it 3 stars.
Little White Fish teaches about the different senses and has a few little activities at the end. I thought this was a cute story and my daughter really enjoyed the illustrations, however the ending was a bit unclear and was a little jarring going into the activities. Interactive books are always a hit in our house. I think this would also be a great addition to a preschool class library to go along with a lesson of the different senses.
One morning Little White Fish and his friends discover something new. He and his friends embark on an adventure to figure out what they discovered. Available for purchase on July 19th!
What I like:
- Below the description is a suggested age (30 months and up) for the book.
- I loved that the book was interactive with activities that engaged children in the reading experience.
- The illustrations and color scheme had an engaging and calming affect.
Read if:
- Your child is 30 months or older or if you don't mind getting the full experience of the book.
- You like including your child in the reading experience.
- Your child is curious or likes solving puzzles.
My rating: 4 Stars.
I would purchase this book as a gift or for story time. We would read it often in our home, but it would not be an everyday or weekly read.

This was a really cute story I will definitely be recommending to my mom, who is always looking for new material to get for her preschool class. I loved the artwork, it was vivid and there was so much going on on every page, perfect to keep a child's attention. It was a little short, but again, since it's for children that makes sense. And I loved the fun games at the back. I can see those being a big hit, and some of them can be used as prompts for learning/exploring more than once.
If you're looking for a fun kids' book that allows for some hands-on learning, I recommend this!
Thanks to Netgalley for supplying an ARC copy.
I really liked how the book incorporated the different senses into the story for kids to learn and understand what they really are. However, it was a little confusing to understand towards the end, as the last few pages led to the activities and games. If there was a page that divided the story and activities, that would be great.
Little White Fish and the Strange Thing is a cute story about using your five senses. Little White Fish comes across something strange one day and he and his friends try to figure out what it might be. They all use their different senses to decide what it isn't.
This book would be a perfect resource for introducing the five senses to young children. The little sensory activities at the end of the story are fun and not too challenging while connecting back to the five senses.
Thank you NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
Little white Fish and the Strange Thing by Guido Van Genechten. Little white Fish finds a shoe and calls it a strange thing. The little fish tastes it trying to discover what it is. Tries to hear if it talks or moves. Little Fish smells it. He touches it to see if it moves. A very cute children’s book finding something new and through his senses tries to discover what it is. I love the illustrations.
Delightful illustrations and characters! So cute! I will definitely look for other books in this series and by this author.
“A story with activities that stimulate the senses.”
Rightly said! Little White Fish is definitely a story that activates the senses, and the little activities were fun too. A child would definitely love this book, especially Little White Fish and it's friends!
I read this book for NetGalley. My Children really enjoyed the first half of the book. While it is very sweet and kind to add games to it. It was a little confusing for my kids to understand that the story was over and the last view pages were games. I think just like a page before the games saying the end of just saying the story has ended and the games are beginning would be the final touch to making this book on the next level.

I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this book. The illustrations are stunning and bright, despite the black background. The text is easy to read, and the interactive part is so much fun. I know this will be a book children will want to read repeatedly.

Little White Fish teaches children to explore their wold by using their senses. A fun book with a variety of cute sea creatures.
