I really liked this book! I received an advance reader copy through NetGalley and just finished the audiobook. I wasn’t sure if I would like it because I didn’t like Sometimes I Lie and thought Rock, Paper, Scissors was just ok. But I did like His & Hers so I figured I would try this one! Overall it was a great book! I was in shock at the end and had no idea it was coming. The voice for the audiobook was soothing and made me want to keep listening to it. I thought the story was good and I loved the twist! I would say even if you aren’t a fan of all of Alice Feeney books, I would still give this one a shot! I thought it was well written and I really enjoyed it!
Alice Feeney is a talented thriller author. "Daisy Darker' is full of twists and turns and I am a huge fan of the narrator. I recommend anyone who loves suspense give this a listen!
Alice Feeney is an automatic preorder author for me. She has a gift of writing the best thrillers that hook you from the beginning. The twists and turns kept you guessing and I never figured it out. I love thrillers that aren't overly violent or gory. This one had just the right amount of "creepiness." The narrator did a fantastic job. I really enjoyed the audio version.
After loving His & Hers by Alice Feeney, I was excited to sink into Daisy Darker. Set on an island reachable only by boat during high tide, tragedy stikes late one evening.
While I did enjoy the dark secrets revealed about each member of the Darker family, they were all incredibly unlikable characters. Not only that, I found the ending a bit hard to swallow and really had to suspend my disbelief. This book was alright, but it definitely doesn't stack up to others I've read by this same author.
Thank you to Netgalley for this advanced audio copy (the narrator was fantastic!) in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this Agatha-esque "And Then There were None" offering by Feeney. The vibe is similar, but the story Feeney has written is all its own, with its own dark charms. As an audiobook, I thought the reader was *perfect* for the story being told. Feeney creates a magical space in Seaglass House, with spitefully flawed characters (that I still cared about--not always the case for me as a reader!) and I was fully engaged as the story played out. Though I guessed the plot twist, I did enjoy the book until the very end and appreciated the entire experience. Fans of Feeney's will enjoy this new title, and those new to the mystery genre would find this book a wonderful gateway into the genre.
My thanks to MacMillan Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview this title!
I love Alice Feeney and I LOVE books like this. Daisy Darker is a take on And Then There Were None, and I thought this was so well done, I couldn’t get enough! I loved the thought of a dark, dysfunctional family coming together one last time for Nana’s 80th bday party in her gothic house which happens to be on her tidal island, and when the tide comes in, no one can leave until the tide goes out. Each family member has secrets of course, and then at midnight, Nana is found dead. An hour later, another family member goes down, and from there, the others are trying to hang on for dear life as each hour passes, all while trying to figure out what in the world is going on and who is behind it. And there are helpful reminders popping up to remind them of the secrets they are all holding while at the same time bringing them all to light…
As I noted this was a take on Agatha Christie’s classic novel but with a twist that was so clever, I absolutely loved it. I won’t say any more, but Feeney has done it again with this one, it was a huge win in my book! The audio was narrated by Stephanie Racine and she did an amazing job with this book, I highly recommend the audio if you can do it this way, but regardless, you need to add this to your list!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC to review.
Thrillers don’t often work for me when I guess every twist. But I think if I hadn’t realized what was going on I would have enjoyed this one.
Alice Feeney has been a bit of a hit or Miss author for me. I really enjoyed her first novel, but the more recent ones have been either a “miss” or a “meh” for me. This one however is a hit! Excellent creepy atmosphere in a mansion where the family is “trapped” due to the tide being in on an island. (They also conveniently have no phones and it was set in the early 2000s before smartphones and internet were everywhere). Family members start dying one by one right under their noses and no one sees it happening. A creepy poem appears (the matriarch of the family is a children's book author) narrating the killings. This is all just perfect. There are also flashback scenes (aided by the use of home videos) to what happened when the now adult grandchildren were children and teens. There is a BIG twist that comes pretty late in the story but I can honestly say I didn’t expect it. It changed the story and it wasn’t really what I wanted, but it was well done nonetheless.
As for the narrator, she herself did a nice job. There were some parts where she whispered (due to that being what happened in the story) and I had a hard time hearing/understanding those but she definitely brought the characters to life. However, there was some sort of audio effect put on the entire story, like a slight echo or reverb and it was terrible. i think it was to add “creepiness”. I thought something was wrong with my earbuds at first but it happened when I switched devices as well. It was very distracting.
This book was an interesting twist on a version of And Then There Were None.
Daisy Darker was born with a broken heart. Her entire childhood consisted of exclusion and extensive doctor trips. Her elder sisters were brilliant and beautiful and she was overshadowed by their gifts.
Daisy Darker’s family is dysfunctional and through their selfishness this narrative is born. I immediately recognized the structure being an Agatha Christie fan but I will say I did not accurately guess the ending. I enjoyed the use of flashbacks and Daisy’s POV because her view and understanding is incomplete. You discover the narrative along with her.
“Sometimes we love monsters without knowing that is what we are.”
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC!
3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Daisy Darker is a locked room-type mystery. The author does a good job at leading the reader to believe one thing about a character and then sharply changing everything with a simple sentence or two. She does this with multiple characters, which makes it a real page-turner.
The reason I took a half point away is the ending didn't work for me, but it's a great conversation starter for book discussion groups! I added it as a possible title for the library book discussion group I lead.
I am a library associate and received an advance copy from #NetGalley.
A wonderful homage to Agatha Christie's 'And Then There Were None' with an entitled family that starts falling one by one! The ending was just perfect and I can't wait to read/listen to Feeney's next novel. The narrator did a wonderful job at keeping me interested and leading me straight to the big twist.
Alice Feeney's audiobook Daisy Darker, is a must-listen for fans of Agatha Christie's novel And Then There Were None. A bone-chilling narrative by Stephanie Racine creates an outstanding atmospheric and creepy setting. My mind raced in total suspense trying to figure out what would happen next. Alice Feeney is known for her ability to develop masterful plot twists that thrill her readers, and Daisy Darker is no exception.
Synopsis:
In the wake of a storm, the Darker family is reunited for eight hours at Nana's house for her 80th birthday party. When Nana is found dead at midnight, and an hour later another family member also dies, the situation takes an unexpected turn. Someone is killing them off one-by-one. Who will be the next to die?
Daisy Darker is an edge-of-your-seat mystery filled with deceptive secrets and captivating surprises. The narration by Stephanie Racine adds so much to the enjoyment of the novel. The energy, articulation, and consistency of the characters took me directly into the scenes. Daisy Darker was a pleasure to review on audiobook.
Daisy Darker audiobook by Alice Feeney is available on August 30th.
Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio, for sharing this thrilling Audiobook with me. Your kindness is appreciated!
I loved Alice Feeney's previous two novels but this one just didn't live up to her reputation. First, the good: The atmosphere was great; she masterfully creates a creepy setting. However, while the story was compelling, one of the twists was pretty obvious early on. The two other major twists were rather ridiculous. It was hard to believe the villain's motives for murder. And the major reveal regarding Daisy Darker was unexpected but have no place in a domestic thriller. That made the entire story silly. I'm still looking forward to Feeney's next novel.
I just love a locked-in thriller! This one blended so many things that I love.
So, Daisy Darker has a bit of a wackado family, and they don’t really spend time together. Except for Nana’s birthday each year. This year, Nana is hitting the big 8-0, and she just knows it’s going to be her last birthday. Everyone in the family smells the inheritance possibilities, so they all come.
But now they are all trapped until the tide changes, and people start dying…
This story is, of course, a nod to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, so there aren’t any surprises there. The real surprises, for me were around the hows, the whys, and the wheres. I loved the way the story revealed details about each member of the family, keeping me hanging on the details all the way up until the last moments.
This was one that I didn’t want to put down. The characters are intriguing. There’s a wide variety of personalities, and you just don’t know who to trust. Then there’s the twists. I loved the things I saw coming, and the many that I didn’t. Alice Feeney has created a unique twist on a classic!
I listened to the audio of this one, and I would highly recommend it. The narration was fantastic!
For the story, it was a great locked room mystery/thriller revisit. We listened in the car and both of us were continually guessing who did it. There is a lot of detail given for each character and twists that make for an interesting ending. It was solid entertainment for our long car ride. I will be recommending this one to friends.
As for production, narrator was fine and did well which all the voices. We were never confused on who was speaking. However, the narrator habitually drops off to a whisper a key moments and the recording seems to drop several levels of volume at that moment and is impossible to hear. We were having to back skip to listen again a lot at which took away from the feel of the “revealed detail”. It was like someone playing with the sound dial at key moments. That really should be fixed before release.
A wicked, masterful homage to Agatha Christie’s “….And Then There We’re None”. Feeney used the plot as a skeleton on which to hang an absolutely marvelous tale of a family gone awry. There are twists and turns in every chapter that leave you guessing right up to the last page! It’s difficult to say too much about the plot but suffice it to say that Ms Feeney has created a unique work that Ms Christie would have enjoyed! The narrator did a first class job, creating mood, apprehension, tension and amazement. A fantastic read!
Narration was wonderful. Loved the far island setting and the countdown to low tide. The end was VERY satisfying. Alice Feeney does not disappoint!
A wonderful atmospheric mystery of a family and strange family dynamics.. The narrator is fabulous. ] can't recommend this audiobook enough!
This is my second book I have read by Alice Feeney, and I loved this one! It had a great suspenseful, spooky tale feel to it. Though I had the main plot point figured out before the end, there were still a few fun twists and surprises I didn’t see coming. Great book to take on a road trip. Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC of this book.
Oh my goodness this is a book that will stick with me for a very long time. The Darker family is quite the collection of characters. They gather together at their grandmothers home to celebrate her 80th birthday. One by one members of the family start dying. This mystery was fast paced and had me thinking up until the very last page!
