With a Spirit of Vengeance by Lena Gregory is the seventh book in the Bay Island Psychic Mystery series. This is a very interesting cozy mystery. The storyline is complex, fast-paced and full of action. I liked how the main characters worked together to help solve this murder mystery. They had to work very hard for their results. I also liked how Bee manages to get some results in a not so legal way. Amateur sleuth Cass Donovon had to shield from the angry spirit and that complicated Cass' investigation. Then Cass faced real danger while trying to solve the mystery. I really liked the surprise toward the end of the book. I like this author's voice and I look forward to the next book in the series.
After suffering some rough times in her own life, Cass Donovan has come home to Bay Island where she rekindled old friendships, made a special new best friend and discovered more about herself and her special talents and abilities. She is also successfully growing her own business based on her psychic abilities.
A past case involved a woman wrongfully accused of murder and sentenced to life in an asylum.
Cass thought she had helped that restless spirit find peace but recent events suggest otherwise.
Could this spirit be creating new problems or is it actually living, cut throat business practices and ambitions targeting locals?
I appreciate how we have seen the characters grow in this series, both as individuals and in relationships. It is interesting how law enforcement views Cass's abilities.
Friendship is a huge theme in this book. I adore Bee and he proves his place once again.
I hope we see many more books in this series.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley. My review opinions are my own. This is a charming paranormal cozy series with fun charcters and a perfect coastal setting. I have enjoyed the entire series and this seventh in series was one of my favorites with a complex mystery dating back in history as well as present day.
Our Protagonist Cass Donovan is a clairvoyant who lives on picturesque Bay Island and owns a psychic shop where she gives readings to locals and tourists. She has a devoted best friend Bee, a large dog named Beast and a police detective boyfriend Luke. Her recent vision shakes her to her core when she sees a murderer standing over three bodies. The new hire in her shop is tied to the family and also having explicit nightmares from a relative that was a murderer and was sentenced to a local insane asylum long closed down but haunted. Cass decides she needs to investigate after two murders occur of the descendants. The mystery deepens which each revelation and Cass is soon finding clues from the past in the family and present day.
This was a excellent next in series. I enjoyed it cover to cover. The sleuth was engaging to conclusion .
Cass Donovan is a clairvoyant who lives peacefully in the home she grew up in on Bay Island. Most of the time, that is. She has a full life, with a best friend named Bee, her dog Beast, and a romantic relationship with Luke, a police detective. But one morning she walks into her shop and sees a vision that shakes her to her core. She knows she needs to decipher what it means, but then she learns that a new tour group is coming to the island, and they want to keep the old insane asylum standing -- the one where Cass recently had a bad experience, and both she and the owner want it torn down.
But how far will these people go to keep it standing? When there are two murders -- and Cass discovers that they are descendants of Ophelia Wilson, whom she proved innocent of killing her family members a century ago, she has to wonder if both are connected, and how. Now it seems Ophelia has a new mission for her -- find out who killed her family members or more people might die...
This is the seventh book in the series and I have read them all. I love the characters and how they interact with one another, I do love that in this book Bee shows his love, in more ways than one, for Cass. There are heartwarming scenes between the two of them that are worth the read alone.
When Cass and Bee decide to visit relatives of Ophelia's they get a huge surprise, and in Bee's research he discovers things that neither he nor Cass do, and can completely change everything. But in learning this, they have to figure something else out, too; it is this that brings the meat of the story into play and kept me reading this in one session. Finding a killer is difficult; but when the killer is keeping secrets of their own, it proves nearly impossible.
The book was wonderful; the story highly intriguing, and the secrets well-kept. It is only the purposefulness of both Cass and Bee that finally brings everything to light. In the end, when the killer is revealed, we come across a ruthless person who has their own line of vengeance to follow. Murder is never pretty, never worth it, never understood. But the story is told well, and I cannot wait to read the next in the series. Highly recommended.
I received an advance copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Beyond the Page Publishing and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
A well written, thought out series. The characters are developed, I find myself wanting more.
When Cass helped the Ophelia Wilson's spirit prove she didn't kill her family, she was happy to have helped put the woman's spirit to rest. But when Ophelia's spirit returns, she's full of vengeance and wants Cass' help again to name the true murderer. Can Cass help Ophelia, or is Ophelia exacting revenge of her own? Cass gives it her all to help solve the matter, but will it be enough to save even herself?
LOVE this series! It takes me home to my roots while also filling my need for mysteries. Each entry has been well written and left me wondering whodunit until the end. Definitely a series to add to you reading list if you haven't yet read one of Lena Gregory's books! You won't regret it!
This is an enjoyable series, and I quite like the characters and their authentic friendships.
I really appreciate the way in which Cass uses her gift to help solve the whodunit.
I recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
I’ve tried to give this series a chance, unfortunately I still cannot connect to any of the characters and after this book, I’ve decided to stop trying. I just can’t seem to find anything that really grabs my attention in these books, so it’s time for me to stop trying.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
