I found this book very well written, it's part memoir and part advice for dealing with grief at different stages. It's really nice to know you are reading advice from someone who has been there personally. The opportunity to read this book with #netgalley came at just the right time for me, after the recent sudden and unexpected loss of my younger brother. I honestly believe this book has supported me surviving this horrendous time in my life so far. I would definitely recommend to others in the unfortunate position of navigating grief.
As a funeral director and someone who has experienced grief myself, this book is incredibly well thought out and well written. Grief is something that is not talked about enough and therefore not understood. It is not something to have negative feelings about but something that can help us grow and grief is something that will be with us forever, ebbing and flowing. I would definitely recommend this book to families I serve in the future.
Synopsis:
Part self-help and part memoir, Marianne Bette shares how to live with grief.
Review:
Having lost a fiance in a tragic accident and a husband to cancer, Marianne has experienced unexpected and expected loss and shares the grieving process she went through with both.
The book is written in sections that are easy to reference. There is guidance on how to cope in the immediate aftermath of loss, what people will say and do that is (or isn't) supportive, and how to talk to children about death.
She writes her own experiences as well as stories about her friends, family, patients, and coworkers who have also experienced loss and how (in their shared grief) they helped one another.
I would recommend this book to anyone going through loss, still struggling with a last loss, or who has a loved one with terminal illness. I am glad I read it and the content will be taken to heart as I navigate my own grieving process for my father.
