Sounded like just my kind of book but unfortunately failed to deliver. It’s short and once you get over the first couple of chapters quite easy to read but the twists were fairly predictable and the characters didn’t draw me in. The plot was probably over developed by having so many points of view going into it.
Single mum Anni would do anything for her little boy, Tobi, he is the center of her world. So she is utterly devastated when Tobi is run over and killed by drunk driver, Carl.
Anni hates Carl for what he’s done and takes some comfort from the lengthy prison sentence he is serving. But she can’t live on hate and after a time spent grieving for her son, Anni returns to work and tries to move on with her life. She is lonely without Tobi and glad to make a new friend, Jo.
But Jo has a secret. She is connected to the fatal accident in a way that Anni never suspects. And Jo is determined that Anni will never discover the awful truth about what really happened that day.
As the two women grow closer, Anni begins to feel that her new friend is keeping something from her.
A terrible suspicion begins to dawn and Anni starts to dig deeper into Jo’s past. Will she discover the horrifying truth? Or will she find out just how far some people go to cover up their mistakes.
I was really intrigued with this book, the storyline is intriguing and easy to follow and the characters are likeable. It's a great physcological thriller with a great twist to the end that I didn't see coming. Highly recommend. Thank you inkubator and netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

This book is simply dreadful. I did not finish it. The story is not at all believable , except for the regrettable fact that a young child is killed by a drunk driver, which is sadly, all to believable. The characters are flat and the writing equally so. I just couldn’t hang around to see what happened to these people.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
This is a good book but not what I was expecting. It was a slow burn in my opinion. I was expecting twists and turns but you could predict what was going to happen for the most part.
Anni is devastated when her 7 year old boy Tobi is run over by a drunk driver. Slowly she is trying to put her life together when she makes a new friend Jo at her work place, but Jo is keeping a devastating secret from Anni about what really happened on the day of the accident.
Told in short chapters with different POV’S The Accident was an enjoyable read with an unexpected twisty ending that I didn't see coming.
I would like to thank Inkubator Books & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
I was sadly disappointed by this novel. I feel like it had promise in the plot line, but it just fell flat for me. I liked the character of Anni at first, but never really liked Jo and was indifferent about Carl. I just didn’t connect with any of the characters enough to be vested in the outcome.
The descriptions of the setting made it easy to visualize what was happening and I feel like I know what the characters looked like. I am interested to see if it’s just this particular book I couldn’t get into or if maybe I’m just not a fan of this author’s writing style. I’d like to read another of his books before making that determination.
2.5 stars rounded to 3
Thank you to #NetGalley for an ARC of #TheAccident
Another sit on the edge of your seat by Daniel Hurst. So many turns I did not foresee happening. Well written and can not get enough of this author!
This was a short, quick paced read that isn’t going to blow your mind but will scratch your thriller itch just fine.
Some things didn’t make sense to me, like why is CCTV footage not the first thing checked? But overall I enjoyed it enough to read through it quite quickly.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the digital ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for my ARC in exchange for an honest review. I haven't read anything by Daniel Hurst before but I will definitely be looking out for more in future.
The Accident was a great read that I could not put down, a harrowing tale of the concequences when a child if killed to all the people involved..
The storyline was actually quite intriguing, I just think it was too short and there was not a lot of depth to the writing. It felt very surface level , like let's just make sure we get everything out there. There just wasn't a lot of meat to pick off the bones. Also, I think this might be a "me" thing in that I was expecting more of a thriller/suspense vibe based on the blurb, and that's not what this was. I'm not sure what genre I'd say this was. The author has a brilliant story in their hands. For me, it needs a bit more tooth.
I had a really hard time getting through this story. It was pretty obvious where the plot was going I wasn't even interested in the characters enough to really care how it would turn out! This book starts strong, the initial descriptions pulled me in, but then the rest of the writing style way over explaining to the max, practically spelling out the situation over and over from each of the 3 perspectives. The reveals were underwhelming, mostly because after the author had finished explaining it, I wasn't even interested anymore! I wish this book would have been much more dynamic and that any of the main characters would have been more developed, and that we knew anything about them outside of their relationship to "The Accident" so I could get invested in their
This is my first book by Daniel Hurst. It is promoted as a thriller but I think it is more of a psychological drama. If that. Up to the point where the child is killed, it’s suspenseful. After that it was downhill til the last two chapters. And that ending! Ugh. Next
A very gripping read with plenty of twists and turns. I enjoyed the point-of-view changes throughout the chapters which allowed for a rounded, balanced story that remained compelling throughout. There were a few small items within the book which I hope get ironed out during publishing (why was a primary school teacher teaching year 10 students?), however it was overall well written and definitely picked up in its second half. The twist/plot-line at the end had me audibly gasp! Overall, a very intriguing story, I would be happy to read more of this author! My only other pet peeve would be that the cover should have a yellow balloon rather than a red one!
Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I loved one of Hurst's other books, The Break so was excited to be on the blog tour again!
Hurst has a great talent for easy reads but equally seriously gripping books!
This was up to that same standard, although I didn't read it as obsessively as The Break.
The chapters are short, they leave you wanting more with every last word so you can easily read them in one sitting without even realising!
The different POVs were expertly shifted, analysing each new twist from the different characters' perspectives.
That ending! Chefs kiss!
Loved it.
I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Zooloos Book Tours.
The Accident is another unputdownable page turner by Daniel Hurst. In this book we meet doting mother Anni who's young son Toby gers run over and killed by a drunk driver (this is one of my worst fears as a mother). Annis world is understandably torn apart by this and she takes slight comfort in the fact that the drunk driver Carl, gets a lengthy prison sentence. As Anni tries to continue with her life she unexpectedly makes a new friend called Jo. But is Jo who she seems to be? This book kept me gripped at every chapter and I enjoyed how the author wrote each chapter as a POV of one of the characters perspectives through the story.
I truly felt for Anni and her loss and grief. The ending of this book threw me as I truly didn't see it coming until it unfolded! I love Daniels books and have really enjoyed every one so far! I can't wait to see what he writes next!
Ahhhhh I am ADDICTED to Daniel's books, I love how fast a new one is out. This was my least fave book, I didn't love this one at all, which was surprising as I have read at least 8 of his book and found all to be a 5 star. This didn't sit well with me .
Wow! Just that….wow! If you’re looking for a book that starts with a gut wrenching, heartbreaking sucker punch and leaves you reeling….then with this, you’ve hit the jackpot!
It’s a fabulously written story, that will draw you in from the first page. The author has created a stunning piece of work that has depth, emotion and pace. I can’t recommend this enough!
This is a book I’ll be recommending for sure, and not just now, but one I can see me recommending in 2,3,4 years time.
Thank you so much to the author, the publisher and netgalley for allowing me this arc. I loved it! 5 out of 5 all day long!
This book is a psychological story (rather than thriller) which follows four sides of the story of feelings, situations, needs and desperation following an incident that changes the protagonists lives for ever.. the book has a very distinct writing style that may take some time to get used to, but is worth persevering with.
Daniel Hurst has done it again with "The Accident". And that cover!!! Give me a creepy red balloon any day lol.
Jo has finally convinced Carl to leave his wife. Anni is walking her son, Tobi, home from a birthday party. Jo and Carl have been drinking and driving their way home. Anni lets go of her son's hand for one second. One moment, and everything changes... Carl goes to prison for killing Tobi with his wreckless driving. Jo tries to go on with her life. Anni grieves her son the best she can...
This gripping psychological thriller is told in multiple first person POV, with very little dialogue. It was fast paced with short chapters. It was a touch unbelievable regarding the investigation of the accident, but I'm was there for the ride and actually didn't question it until Anni seeks the CCTV footage, which we learn the police never asked for. I still don't understand why the ballon on the cover is red... Tobi's ballon in the book is yellow (and it is mentionned several times). The ending was very predictable, but still a page turner. It was my first book by this author, and I'm definitely diving into his backlist!
I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and Inkubator Books, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
