Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC!
What a fun summer read! Tess is abandoned at a gas station in the middle of nowhere by her boyfriend and doesn’t want to bother her parents who are out of the country because she knew they would say “told you so”. Luckily the family that owns the gas station is super friendly and offers her a place to stay until she can figure out how to get home. I don’t want to spoil anything but I do recommend!
The book wasn’t deep and I think some people might think it was boring for a bit of the first half but I really enjoyed it. It was the perfect light summer read to get your mind off of everything going on in the world. Not super spicy. Perfect to read before bed because it’s not too sad or scary which I love.
Plus the cover is so cute!
I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars! Tess and Colten are okay to me. Small town romance that is a thrill to watch as their relationship grows. Their chemistry was okayish and not too steamy, so if you're looking for a light romance book, this is for you!
I am not a fan of insta love. Tess and Colten fall in love at first sight, but they don't want to screw up their friendship for a long time. Also, for the first half of the book, Colten was extremely annoying.
However, the supporting cast. They truly are the best. It makes me want to go to Jasper Creek and eat at Earl's Diner. They are all so lovely, and the warm and comfortable vibe in this book was simply heartwarming.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Toad Tree Press for this Advanced Readers Copy!!
I would like to start by thanking everyone involved in allowing me access to this ebook.
This is a coming of age book. Young Tess, just 18, straight out of high school and only knowing her rich New York reality, is left in a gas station by her boyfriend, Dax, who turns in an ex-boyfriend pretty fast. It was deserved, Dax! It was deserved!
Well, in this gas station, Tess will meet the owners, a very loving family made up by the mother, father, daughter and son. This is contemporary romance, so there is romance, for sure, but it’s a slow burn and, as far as I’m concerned, not the main focus of the book and that was refreshing.
Tess meets a reality completely different from the one she is familiar with. Tess is already done with her reality, feeling the need to connect to people in a deeper level. The book is full of clichês, for sure, starting with the “rich girl vs small town boy”, but I felt this didn’t diminished the overall message, although it did play a part in my final classification. I don’t know in what other way it could have been done, without falling in the clichê.
The message is just beautiful for young readers. It truly shows the importance of friendship and family, which I appreciated as I feel young generations don’t value their relatives as they should. The book is slow paced, which is not really my type, and was the other factor influencing my classification. It is not a bad pacing, it’s just not my type. Although I feel it’s appropriate for younger readers, as it will give them time to fully enjoy the narrative. Finally, there is mention of physical relations between the two main characters, but not description, so I think it’s really appropriate for a younger audience (teenagers, to start talking about these issues).

The Right Kind of Unexpected follows a girl named Tess who even though she has her parent’s wealth is missing something from her life. Her emotionally abusive mother gives her plenty of reasons to act out, that’s why she’s out with a bad boy named Dax who happens to leave her stranded in a small town with nothing because he took her car and everything in it on their way to Florida from New York where Tess is from. She gets stranded in the most quaint town imaginable with a cast of characters who I loved instantly the moment I met them.
Colton is Tess’s love interest, a sweet southern gentleman who opens doors for her and treats her right. Twyla is Colton’s hard working no nonsense mom, she runs the diner with minimal help (not that Josie isn’t the biggest help ever) until Tess comes along. Earl is the best cook ever and Colton’s dad, Twyla’s husband. He’s a sweet man who welcomes Tess into their family because her own family is really distant emotionally. Josie is Colton’s extremely smart younger sister, she has a passion for reading and she helps her family run the business.
Naomi is Colton’s very protective friend, they have known each other since they were toddlers so they’re like brother and sister. As Tess gets to know her better, she quickly becomes Tess’s fiercely protective friend. Naomi really would do anything for her friends and she feels like it’s her duty to always have her friend’s backs no matter what. Sri is also a friend, she’s more sweet and shy. She’s smart and in love with a boy named Dawson, Dawson is one of Colton’s friends. Jeb is the old man that frequently comes into the diner. He’s pretty rude with everyone until Tess puts a stop to it, he’s actually just a sweet old man who has experienced a lot of pain in his life and Tess is glad to be there for him.
This cast of characters really make the story fantastic. I smiled so many times while reading this book and I sincerely hope that there are still people in the world like Colton and his family. It really was a beautiful book, I really enjoyed reading it.
An easy fast-paced young adult romance novel that is sure to be on many’s summer lists. Having many cute moments followed with banter and laughter created a lighthearted read. A book that is sure to capture the summer love.
I really enjoyed this book! The pacing of the story was really well and enjoyed the family dynamic of the diner and the way the romance was developed throughout the story.
This is a YA romance novel that tells us a story of 18-year-old Tess who has just graduated from school and travels with her boyfriend Dax from New York to Disney World. They stop at the gas station near a small town called Jasper Creek and while she goes to the bathroom, Dax leaves Tess there taking her car, purse, wallet and phone.
That's when Tess meets Colten, the son of the owners of this gas station. Conrad works in the garage, his father Earl is a chef at the diner, his mother Twyla is a waitress there (and she really loves art). Also, Colten has a younger sister Josie, who is a genius. Colten's parents offer Tess to stay at their place and work as a waitress at their diner this summer. Tess decides to accept their offer, since she doesn't want to stay in NYC alone (her parents are in Europe right now).
I'll start with the cons of this book. First of all, I'm not a fan of insta love. Give me some slow burn! Here we have kinda both. Tess and Colten fall in love from the first sight, but they don't want to ruin their friendship for a pretty long time (there's almost friends-to-lovers trope here). Also, Colten was hella annoying for the first half of the book. I'll give you an example (that's a quote from the book):
“Why are you so obsessed with my parents' money?” I mean, frick. Every conversation we have seems to circle around to it.
“I'm not.”
“You are! You're always making comments on teasing me. Colten. It's. Not. My. Money.”
Yes, our main character, Tess, is a rich girl from NYC. And Colten is an ordinary guy from a small town. BUT I literally couldn't stand him for like 50% of the book! He CONSTATLY reminded Tess that she's rich and tried to insult her with her parents' money at every opportunity. And you know what? He was doing that even though he knew that Tess's mom is abusive and Tess's dad doesn't care neither about Tess, nor about his wife being abusive to their daughter. Is it okay to insult anyone with their parents' having a lot of money, when this person isn't doing anything bad? No. Is it okay doing that, when you kinda like this person and know that her parents aren't even loving? NO.
One more thing I didn't like about this book was writing at some moments. Like there were a lot of scenes, when we didn't get to see some events, instead of that author described them to us through Tess's thoughts or just dialogues. Like, for example, Tess's life before being abandoned by her boyfriend at this small-town gas station.
Also, here is a four-year time jump. To be honest, I wasn't prepared for that and I personally don't really like time jumps in books/movies/etc. But it made total sense, considering the plot. However, what didn't make sense is that characters didn't act like they hadn't seen each other for those four years. I wish they were acting more surprised and distant, you know?
Now on to my favorite part of the book. As I already said, I didn't really like main characters of this book. Sometimes they acted stupid, and Colten was annoying most of the time. BUT. Side characters. They're literally the best. I want to live in this book. I want to visit Jasper Creek. I want to visit that diner and try Earl's food, talk to Jeb (probably my fav character! <3), look at Twyla's art and just spend some time with Naomi, Sri and Josie. All of them are SO NICE, and the cozy atmosphere in this book was just heartwarming. Loved that!
I've read this book in July and, trust me, this was a perfect summer read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes young adult, because now I want to spend the rest of my summer in Jasper Creek.
Oh dear…
I love YA, I really do. The description of this one sounded so promising. But it missed the mark for me.
It follows a girl named Tess. She is abandoned by her boyfriend at a random gas station with no phone or money. This gas station happens to be run by a family that takes her in and gives her the family she never had. But it just didn’t make sense. It was too unbelievable.
The dialogue and writing style was cringy. It was insta-love but lacked character development and maturity.
Thank you to NetGalley for this opportunity. Unfortunately, this was not the book for me.
The Right Kind of Unexpected tells the story of Tess, who gets left by her boyfriend in a small town. She has a crappy family and is taken in by a family who owns the diner she stopped at to use the bathroom. She falls in love with their son Colten. Sparks and tempers fly.
This was a light, easy read that you could do in a day! There as a level of sassy banter and hilariousness that makes this story enjoyable!
Thank you to NetGalley, Rayna York, and Toad Tree Press for providing this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I really wanted to love this book and I’d heard such good things. Unfortunately it did not live up to the hype.

The back and forth between Colton and Tess was so annoying to me. They hashed out the same argument for half the book. The end was kinda boring and obvious. I was glad when this one was over.
Thanks NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was such an easy, light, and fun read! I breezed through it during my recent vacation on the beach. Perfect for summer - *swoon* worthy for sure! I'll definitely be recommending this one to all of my friends.

This was an easy, light, fast paced read with cute banter and lots of laughable moments. It was perfect for summer. I read it at the beach and it really set the mood with the long summer nights, ice cream, and diner food. I cannot wait to reread this one again!

I enjoyed this book. Wasn't sure how it would go as far as the ex boyfriend was concerned but it ended well.
This was an exceptionally easy and light read, perfect for the summer! It features my favourite trope; found family to the backdrop of a small-town romance - I mean, *swoon!*.
I immediately knew from the very first introduction that I was going to like the love interest and his family. I love their cheekiness & banter, as well as the warmth that they showed each other and of course, the unexpected kindness and welcoming that they showed Tess, who is a complete stranger.
Tess's character is challenging at times. She comes across as whiny, self-entitled, and bratty. However, I think that this is a reflection of her desperation to discover who she is outside of her family, and perhaps even a cry for support, direction and compassion that you'd generally get from a parent or guardian.
While parts of this were very cliche and what you would come to expect from a YA read, I still loved that the author managed to keep me engaged and even slipped in a surprise here and there. Overall, a great read - I look forward to seeing more from this author!

Thank you to Rayna York, Toad Tree Press and NetGalley for giving me an eARC of The Right Kind of Unexpected!!
The Right Kind of Unexpected is a fast paced found family romance that will get you in the mood for long summer nights, diner food and homemade ice cream. When Tess get abandoned at a small town gas station, she is left with no money, phone or replacement clothes. If it wasn't for the kindness of the family that owns the gas station/diner she would have no choice but to go back home to New York, to the empty house and the absentee parents. Instead she is given the chance to waitress at the diner, while working at the diner she starts meeting the people of the small town and starts getting closer to Colten. Colten is the son of the gas station/ diner owners and he happens to be a dreamy mechanic. what transpires is a whirlwind couple of weeks where Tess not only starts yo fall for Colten but also starts to fall in love with his friends and family. I don't want to say much more and spoil it, but the book took a turn that I honestly wasn't expecting but was very happy it did happen.
This books was a sweet and slightly angsty summer read that delivers all the feels, Honestly I cried when I finished it because I loved how the author ended the book. I highly recommend this books to anyone who is looking for romance, found family and a feel good ending.
This is the perfect summer read! I Loved this novel. You can't help but feel for Tess. Right away you just start hoping for the best for her, when she is left with nothing! She has to depend on the kindness of strangers and this heart warming tale will grab you and suck you in!
Grab this book and read it. It restored a piece of my soul! I can't wait to read more by this author.
Thanks to net galley and toad tree for this ARC
This was a cute summer read that is between YA and NA. Tess goes on a road trip, gets abandoned by her now ex-boyfriend, and then she's stuck in a small town. Sooooooooooo a nice small town romance ensues. This book reminds me of Along for the Ride (Sarah Dessen)
Okay, I absolutely loved this one. It made me laugh and stare at my iPad with heart emojis for eyes. It was sincerely the cutest story ever.
I would read Rayna York's next book, but I couldn't finish this one. At about 68% through I realized that I just wasn't connecting to the characters and it was hard to lose myself in the story. I found myself critiquing the writing and the dialogue too much to get caught up in the story itself. I am curious to see what the author will do in her next book though because I think this one maybe needed a stronger editor and possibly one or two more drafts.
Thank you to NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy of this title which is available on June 18, 2022.
I really enjoyed this book from beginning to the end. It’s a great summer read.
The story starts when Tess gets abandoned at a gas station by her boyfriend who takes everything. She hates the idea of having to call her parents. What will she do?
The characters in the story were well developed and I enjoyed them and the authors writing style. I highly recommend to anyone who loves adult romance.
