I was totally excited to start reading this book as it had a great blurb that gave me high expectations. As I got to the middle of the book, I got vibes of a Wattpad book, but in a good way (ish).

It's a cute small town romance, where the 'rich' girl gets stranded at a gas station because her boyfriend is a little ... .
The writing is okay, the kind of writing you would see in a WP book, same with the plot. Tess, the main character, is a strong-witted girl who is very confident in what she wants and fights for what she thinks is right. Her love interest, Colten, gave me the ick. He always made jokes about how she doesn't fit in the small town because of how rich she is and because she comes from a big city. It was CONSTANT. He isn't book boyfriend material, doing the bare minimum, AND being a constant pain as he constantly 'joked' about her money. He only stopped when Tess told him its not okay and when she got really sad/mad.

I understand there isn't much plot to this kind of book, and that is not a problem, but I expected to read about awesome characters that actually have a personality. This book isn't the case as their whole personality is based on living in a small town. This book just wasn't for my taste.

The Right King of Unexpected is a very heartwarming and entertaining story. I am glad the book title caught my eye. I found the characters to be very endearing, it’s very easy to fall in love with the Reed family, Jasper Creek, and its residents.

This book was sort of a feel-good story with a happy ending. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline.

The Right Kind of Unexpected is a cute Young Adult Romance! This is such a fun summer read. Tess is abandoned by her boyfriend at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. What starts out as a total disaster quickly becomes the bet time of her life when the family that owns the business takes her in. She learns the true meaning of family and friendship and falls in love along the way.

If you like reading small town romance or the found family trope, this book is definitely for you!

Adorable adorable adorable. I tore through this book in about 5 hours, it immediately had me hooked and kept me hooked the entire time.

I loved how even though there was an instant connection between Colten and Tess it still burned slowly and took its time developing. The town, the friends, Coltens family, Jeb, they all pulled on all the right heart strings. Overall this was a super sweet and light hearted read where everyone gets a HEA.

The only thing I wished would’ve been different was how they made up, it felt a little too rushed and I would’ve definitely liked to have seen some more drama/groveling as he hurt her really bad but it didn’t take away from the book itself at all!

This was such a heartwarming story and a perfect read for the summer. I think we've all been kicked when we are down but being able to turn your life around is important. Tess and Coltens relationship was beautiful and I enjoyed getting to read about them. Nothing really stood out to me about this story but while I was in it, I enjoyed it!

Thank you to NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I requested this ARC hoping for a cute summer read, and while the premise of the book definitely fitted my expectations, the book itself did not. However if you're a reader who doesn't look too much into anything and you simply want a light hearted summer read, this is the book for you. Unfortunately, I'm not that kind of reader.

Starting off, she had little to no reaction when she found out her boyfriend left her in the middle of nowhere, but for the sake of being a 'rom com' book, I decided to brush it off and hoped that it would get better from there.

But it didn't. The romance between Tess and Colten was insta love and fastburn. They had all the right tropes and groundwork, but the lack of depth and chemistry between the two characters made the romance seem unrealistic and flimsy. Also the part where Tess dumped her entire life story on him in the first 24 hours after they met,, like who does that??

The dialogue was very off, not just between Tess and Colten, but also with the side characters as well. The book also suffered from telling but not showing syndrome. I felt like that we should have gotten to see Tess' backstory instead from her info dumping us through shitty dialogue, along with her character development during the timeskip.

I actually found Tess' relationships with the other side characters more interesting. But just like her relationship with Colten, it lacked well written development.

Cute & lighthearted YA summer read!! I flew through this in one evening, and felt like I was in the middle of a Hallmark movie the entire time. Predictable at parts, but overall, just what you'd expect from a story about a city girl being dumped in the middle of no-where, and falling in love.

The Right Kind of Unexpected was a really cute small town love story. When Tess gets abandoned at a gas station in the middle of nowhere by her now ex boyfriend Dax, it’s Colten and his family that come to the rescue. Tess is a city gal that comes from a family with lots of money and don’t seem to notice that she’s even been gone from the home while they’re vacationing in Europe. Colten and his family are small town loving, accepting and welcoming people, and when the two become friends sparks start to fly…

How can you not love a story like this? The author does an excellent job describing the small town, you really feel like you’re there. The love and friendships made between Tess and the family and people in town really captures that small town vibe. I’m giving this book a 4.5 🌟 as it was really easy to read, and all the character were really loveable. Colten is pure old school gentleman so it was super refreshing to read about that. While Tess is this super independent 18 year old girl finding her way. I love that there is female empowerment and intelligence throughout this book and I love the respect from the men in this town

QOTD: What's the longest you've driven on a roadtrip?
My A: Last summer my husband and I drove 12 hours to South Dakota from Iowa!
.
First off, let me just say I LOVE this cover!! I saw this on NetGalley and instantly clicked to see more just from the cover alone. I feel like covers just keep getting better and better! 😍
.
It's been a long time since I've read what I would consider a Young New Adult. The characters are fresh out of high school first a good chunk of the book and then there is a 4 year time jump. I think this will be a popular book for those around that age! Some of the personal problems seemed like non problems to me but I think that's just me being old. 🤣
.
BLURB:
Tess hasn’t experienced many kindnesses in her eighteen years. When her boyfriend abandons her at a small-town gas station, it’s not a surprise, just one more crappy event to add to the pile. Without a car, money, or cell phone, her options are limited, and calling her parents isn’t one of them, so when the family that owns the station throws her a lifeline, she grabs hold. Because even the worst situations can have a silver lining, and this one is a town called Jasper Creek, a diner everyone calls Earl’s, and a young mechanic named Colten Reed.

In this book we follow Tess as she gets abandoned at a gas station by her now ex boyfriend Dax. We follow as she falls in love, finds what truly makes her happy and builds relationships that matter.
I really loved this book! The writing, the plot and the characters were just on point for me.
I'm giving it a 4,5.
Thank you NetGalley for the arc!

This book was beautiful and was a perfect beginning of summer read. I liked this book but I did find that it had some slow spots and was very predictable. The characters were nice but I wasn’t able to relate to them as some other people have been able to. Overall I would absolutely recommend this book to someone who is looking for a coming of age YA romance to make you feel warm and fuzzy by the end!

Fantastic, such a good read to kick of summer! Rayna York crafted such a wonderful following our main character Tess! This book was quite predictable but it didn’t make me love it any less. Very YA and such a good coming of age story! I would recommend and I can’t wait to read more of York’s work in the future.

This story was so wonderful in every possible way and I could not put this book down till I finished it all in one setting! I fell in love with all the characters who all were so relatable. Additionally, the romance was adorable. I highly highly recommend everyone read this story.

FLEW through this excellent, incredible book. Tightly written, earnest, laugh-out-loud funny at several parts—one of the best page-turning books I've read in ages.

I adored all the characters and the atmosphere so much and I hope the author continues putting out more books like this!

This was such a great YA book! I was really, really invested in Tess’s story and journey of found family, love, friendship, identity and standing her ground.

The characters in this book are just so good, I want to give them all a big hug. I want to eat Earl’s food, have a verbal brawl over coffee with Jeb, go to dinner with Twyla, mix ice cream creations with Naomi and Sri, play trivial pursuit with Josie and take my car to Colten’s shop. It was like being in a less eccentric Stars Hollow and I ate it up!

I also loved that the queer side character was a great friend, successful and ends up in a happy, queer relationship.

This is an easy five stars!

3.5 stars!

“The Right Kind of Unexpected” is a really cute fast-paced summer read. I’d definitely recommend it to someone who’s looking for a fun light romance read. The dynamic between the characters and the found family is one of my favourite things about this book. I also loved the small town small town aspect, it made me the book feel familiar and comfortable. However, the reason I’m not giving this 5 stars is that I felt that start and end of the book was too rushed. The book started with her already being abandoned by her boyfriend, so the readers do not really get a glimpse of her life before and we only learn about it through her telling Colten. The ending was also too fast for me, the time jump was needed but I felt like they reunited too fast. There was no grovelling on Colten’s part for the things he said, they did not resolve any issues. Tess realized about how she wanted to stay very last minute so It did not really have a big impact. It just felt rushed in the wrapping up part. There was also a part that has been bugging me a lot, and that was when Tess told Delilah that she’s sure Delilah can lose her extra pounds quickly as an insult or attack to keep her away from Colton. I’m not justifying Delilah as a character, I know she was supposed to be a mean character but I just hoped they were not pitted against each other and that Tess had to bring up weight or make Delilah insecure about her looks.

Still, this book gave what it said it would, which was a summer small-town romance. I enjoyed it a lot and I would share it to others but i’m not sure if it’s something i’d reread

Being abandoned at a small town gas-station with no clothes, phone, or money is one of the worst nightmare a New Yorker can have. Right from the start the situation was set against Tessa, starting with parents who did not love and appreciate her enough, and her need to rebel against them, it made perfect sense for her to go on a road-trip, with her car, and her slightly douche (okay yes, big douche) of a boyfriend. It also made perfect sense for the said boyfriend to become the ex-boyfriend when she gets left behind on the gas station at Jasper Creek- perfectly cute small town name.

Enter the Reed family

We all know that people residing in small towns are 150% more caring, and sweet and thoughtful. It made perfect sense for Tess to stay in the town and work at Earl's diner for the summer, instead of spending it alone in her house before her first semester at NYU.

This was a perfect summer read, filled with amazing food, refreshing drinks and dips into water bodies. At the beginning I was slightly sceptical, because small town romance is not my preferred genre. This is because in real life scenarios I don't see it happening. But, yes, thanks to the fast pace of the book, I was intrigued and happy to discover that Tess followed her dreams and passions instead of staying at Jasper Creek, credit goes to Colten for that very, very painful break-up. I think this was a better choice for her character in the end. In this way it gave Tess and Colton a chance to grow up and learn more about themselves.

A girl gets abandoned by her less-than-stellar boyfriend at a gas station in the middle of nowhere with no phone or money. Normally that would be the time to call the cops or your family, but instead this book cues the romance music. The main character, Tess, discovers over the course of the book that she has a growing attraction to mechanic and starts to understand what it means to be part of a community. When I read the description, I was excited. It seemed like an interesting premise to a cute romcom book. What could go wrong? Well, it started out on uneven footing, and it never got that much better. For the start, I was expecting a bit of lead up to the actual event of Tess being left in the middle of nowhere, so you can get to know the characters and even connect to them, but no. You are thrown right into the fray, and it starts out with her just sitting on the side of the road waiting. Not only that, but she doesn't seem to care that she is stuck. She doesn't want to call her parents, friends, or anything, but opts for staying in the town and becoming a waitress. Not once does she get angry, sad, or frustrated that her boyfriend stole her car. Her lack of showing any normal emotion about the situation didn't help me to connect with her as a character. With the odd start, it was hard for me to get into the story itself as it made no sense. There were no real obstacles preventing her from going home from the very start.
Not only were my expectations for how this book would start or how someone would react to being abandoned were not met, the romance didn't seem believable either. The whole relationship is very much an insta-love and a will-they-won't-they? which I can definitely appreciate when done right. For Tess and Colten, it felt very rushed from the start, so it was hard for me engage with it. There were definitely some very cute scenes and dates that I did like and anyone who likes romantic movies will also love. Unfortunately, the cute scenes were interspersed with a lot of unnecessary drama and miscommunication that kept me thinking... "but why was that needed?" The constant back and forth without any real connection made it hard for me to believe that this was a epic romance like the author kept trying to tell me that it was.
The book did have some pretty good side characters that you get to know and like, but unfortunately, the dialogue and writing style really prevented me from becoming a super fan of anyone. A majority of the writing was spent telling me everything, not showing me anything. It resulted in a lot of unbelievable dialogue and stilted interactions. For example, Tess tells Colten all her family drama and trauma within less than 10 hours of meeting him. Why would you do this to a random person especially a someone that you are attracted to? Pretty much scene with dialogue was stilted and full of way too much information. No normal person would talk like how any character in this book talked. With the way it was written, I felt like I was reading a fanfiction, not a fully fleshed out story where characters have inner-thoughts and aren't literal open books. The dialogue was ultimately what made me dislike this book as I could not get past how bad it was.
Overall, this book was not for me. While it is a quick-read and a perfect summer read with some cute scenes, I didn't connect with the main character, the romance felt rushed, and the dialogue was so awkward that it hurt.
