This book was the absolute cutest! I loved tests and Colten so so much! I swooned so hard getting to see them slowly (maybe not so slowly) fall in love with each other. This book is the PERFECT summer read with a small-town setting and the close-knit friendships. I would absolutely love to just be able to visit this cute small town with the ice cream shops and diners. Full of drama, love, heartbreak, and angst I don't think I will be easily forgetting this one.
The Right Kind of Unexpected follows Tess whose boyfriend steals her car and abandons her at a gas station. Left with nothing, Tess is stranded. So when the owners of the gas station agree to help her she is more than thankful. She decides that she wants to stay in the town of Jasper Creek and work there for the summer. Tessa ends up falling for the owner of the diner's son Colten. But as soon as things start going good for Tess she is forced to leave. Cut to four years later Tess can't stop thinking of the town of Jasper Creek and Colten. So she decides to go back to the town she loved so much. And maybe try to fix things with Colten.
This was such a cute book. I loved how kind everyone was in this book. I enjoyed the small town vibe of this book. Tess and Colten were so stinkin cute. I really did not mind the time jump in this book either. I think it showed that if something is meant to happen life will find a way. I think this is a really cute summer romance. I really loved everything about this book. I highly suggest this cute romance book. This had everything I loved in a romance book. I do not rate books five stars a lot. But this was one I had to because I loved this book so much. This is one that I will definitely read again. Thank you so much NetGalley, Toad Free Press, and Rayna York for an ARC of this book.
{4.25 ☆} In this novel, 18-year-old Tess is travelling to Disney World with her boyfriend Dax who ends up taking her car along with her wallet, phone and other things leaving her stranded and shell-shocked at a gas station in a small town called Jasper Creek where she knows no one. That is until she meets Colten and his family.
Colten is a boy around Tess’s age who works in the garage attached to the gas station. His parents, the owners of the gas station and diner next door offer Tess a waitressing job and a place to stay for the summer. She chooses to take the job so that she doesn’t have to spend her last summer before starting her first semester at NYU alone in a house where she’d be surrounded by her two negligent parents.
This novel gets a 4.25 out of 5 from me! Tess and Colten are absolutely adorable together and being able to see them fall in love was amazing!! This is a great summer read, I definitely recommend it and will 100% reread it at some point.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Toad Tree Press for this Advanced Readers Copy!!
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Toad Tree Press and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Cute, whimsical and entertaining. I liked the humbling of the MC throughout.
This book start immediately with the MC being abandoned in an unknown city by her ex-boyfriend but ended up having the best summer time she ever had compare to the life she had on NYC.
I love this small town-Jasper Creek and the people in it, everybody is so friendly and welcoming.
I feel happy for Tess finding out what she's been missing her whole life like the wonderful friendship she had with Naomi and Sri as well as the feeling of someone looking out for her which she find in Colten's family.
I feel slightly annoyed at some parts of the story because I was anxious for the main characters to get together already.
Nevertheless, I love the romantic build up between Tess and Colten, I was touched with what they had. They are the definition of the right person-wrong time-kind of couple.
The time jumps felt slightly too sudden but I understand it was necessary for the characters development.
Although, I also wish there's more to that epilogue!
Overall, this is a satisfying quick and cute summer read which'll bring out all kinds of emotions and teach us that family is not always the people bound by blood to us.
I'll definitely be reading other books from this author!
Actual rating: 4.5⭐
Thank you to Netgalley, Rayna York and Toad Tree Press for granting this review copy to me. I'm leaving this honest review voluntarily!
This was a fun read. I loved the way we met Tess and Colton at the beginning of the book. I loved their interactions and the ending. I hadn't read anything by Rayna York before but really liked the writing style and will be reading more from York in the future.
Tess just graduated high school and took off on a trip with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, he took her car and left her stranded at a gas station. The kind owners of the gas station take her in, house her and put her to work for the summer. Tess feels more at home here than at her actual home and is quite intrigued by their son, Colten. The only problem is he doesn't do flings and she doesn't plan to stay past the summer.
Opinion
This is a great read for any older "young adult." There are some scenes that allude to sex so it is probably not best for younger teens. The romance is sweet and intoxicating. There is a slow build but the attraction is obvious. Fair warning though, there is a scene that will make you so mad that you will want to throw your book/e-reader.
Many thanks to Net Galley and to Toad Tree Press for providing me with an ARC of this book.

This saying is what came to mind when I finished this amazing book!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book even more so than I had expected!
Tess is a privileged 18 year old from New York who takes off on a spur of the moment trip with her boyfriend who ditches her while she is using the restroom at a small town gas station. She meets 20 year old Colten and his family who graciously take her in, give her a job & a place to live while she figures out what her next steps are since she doesn't have supportive parents. They show her a loving family life that she didn't know existed. Not only does she make changes within herself, she encourages (sometimes unknowingly) changes in everyone she meets in Jasper Creek!
This was such a super cute story that really drew me in from the first page! This book made me feel all the feelings...I laughed, cried, felt heart broken, anger and frustration. I loved the small town vibe - I could totally live there! I loved all of the characters and how they developed throughout the story - I could see myself being friends with all of them...even grouchy Jeb! I truly felt the connection between Tess and Colten. The connections that Tess made in Jasper Creek were so strong that it seemed like she was there for more than a few weeks. She just fell right into place in these peoples lives!
I could not put this book down and it will definitely be on my re-read list! I would highly recommend book!
Thank you to NetGalley, ToadTree Press & Rayna York for this advanced copy in return for my honest review!
SUCH A MUSTREAD IF YOU LIKE SUMMER NOVELS AND SUMMER ROMANCES! 4 OUT OF 5 STARS!
This book is so cute! This is a summer book where our main character Tess is stranded in a small city because her boyfriend (very quickly ex-boyfriend) leaves her there – driving away in HER car.
I love the characters and I love the city! We are let into a family who run's a family business: A diner and a gas station. It's a small town, so everyone knows each other. Tess – A manhattan girl who doesn't care much for richness – quickly realises the values of this city and sticks along for the summer.
I love the romance between Colten and Tess and I love how we meet her personality throughout the story. We are let into her personal life with her family, the struggles and the differences between the rich life of manhatten and the smaller and more modest lives of smaller cities.
Definitely a must read if you like 'It happened one summer' or 'The Spanish love deception'
The Right Kind of Unexpected took me much longer to read as it struggled to keep my attention. At times the dialogue was a bit stiff and caused the my typical reading cadence to falter as I had to go back and re-read various sections. This was frequent throughout the book and was even worse with the setup of where interactions were taking place or in the moments designed transition you between scenes. Characters would come and go from various interactions with little to no resolution to why they were really there in the first place and had little character development beyond the surface. The story was really cute, although a little far fetched at times due to very "fast friends" nature of everyone. Due to the disjointed writing style and interesting way of developing her characters I would rate this book about 3 stars. I think it has a lot of potential and I know the author is just kicking of her career so I'm sure there will be improvements in later works.
This was such a charming summer read!
It's difficult not to like Tess and Colten. I found myself sympathizing with each of them throughout the book, reading about their relationship and different backgrounds. It is a relevant story to go with the quote, "Money can't buy you happiness."
Jasper Creek, the town in which the story takes place, and the relationships that come from it hit close to home for me, having grown up in a small town myself. Close-knit friend groups, everyone knowing everyone and their business, it's all very real.
As my anxiety occasionally rose and things seemed to be kind of falling apart, I wanted to know how it would end. The jump in time satisfied my curiosity as I had to know where their lives had taken them. Although it was somewhat predictable, it was just the ending I was hoping for.
I enjoyed this read and am appreciative of the ARC provided to me by @netgalley and Toad Tree Press in exchange for an honest review.
I liked the premise of this story - a wealthy girl, from Manhattan is dumped at a gas station on the way to Disney World by her boyfriend, who leaves with her car and all of her possessions while she’s in the bathroom.
Being abandoned turns out to be a blessing in disguise, as she finds a home in Jasper Creek. She falls in love with the town, the community and the cute mechanic whose family has taken her in. Eventually, she has to make a choice between this new life she’s started to build or the old one that is calling her back.
I found it challenging to finish this book. The characters didn’t have much depth and the writing and dialogue was hard to engage with. Again, I liked the idea of these characters and thought they could be fleshed out more.
The thing I did appreciate about this story was that Tess fought for her happiness and tried to build a life different to the one she had been given.
Tess is an 18 year old New Yorker from a well-off family. Her life unexpectedly changed when her boyfriend took off with her car, her money, her cellphone along with her other stuff and left her at a gas station in a small town called Jasper Creek. As someone who has been neglected by her parents since she was a kid, she opted not to call her parents to ask for help. The owners of the gas station/diner offered help though. She then decided to work for them as a waitress and stay in Jasper Creek for the summer. There, she met this special boy, Colten and she couldn't help but fall hard for him. Colten seems to like her, too but he doesn't believe in long distance relationships.
This story is about falling in love, heartbreaks, friendship, sacrifices, and priorities.
This book took me by surprise. It's the right kind unexpected indeed! I loved YA books when I was younger but after reading a few now that I've gotten older, it's seldom I get excited and find one that's really enjoyable and not cheesy. Absolutely a page turner!
Big thanks to NetGalley and Toad Tree Press for giving me access to the digital ARC of The Right Kind of Unexpected by Rayna York in exchange for an honest review.
“The Right Kind of Unexpected” is a very heartwarming and entertaining story. I am glad the book title caught my eye. I found the characters to be very endearing, it’s very easy to fall in love with the Reed family, Jasper Creek, and its residents. Even though I do have to admit that Tess and Colten's relationship plot was a little frustrating.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an entertaining beach read. If you are a fan of the small-town romance trope or/the found family trope this book is for you.
Thank you Netgalley and Toad Tree Press, for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I love sweet small town romance and this book and it’s characters was delightful . It would make a great movie,
This book was such a great balance between a lighthearted romance and thoughtful struggle with feelings. First, the characters and their development were amazing!! Tessa is such a strong lead who, even if she wasn’t 100% sure about what she wanted, wouldn’t let anyone choose for her. And Josie is such a bright young girl, someone Im sure will be an inspiration for others reading. The romance and the tension was so nerve-wracking because there were points where I would be reading and want to shake the characters and just say “kiss already!!” and that honestly had the book and the wait so worth it. The build up was amazing and lasted throughout the whole book. I was concerned at first because of the instant attraction, but it was leveled out pretty well, and the author did a great job in pacing it. Colten is one of a kind, and an amazing love interest. The plot itself was so cute, and honestly one of those romance plots that I would reread over and over on good and bad days.
This was a cute, simple read. It was enjoyable but just fell a little flat for me. I liked the idea of the main character Tess being left by her boyfriend in a random town but felt like everything was really rushed after that point. I wanted more build up in the beginning & it just made it difficult for me to be all in on Tess & Colten. I didn’t believe their feelings. Overall it was cute but not my favorite!
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole concept of Tess being abandoned in this small town. I wish that her stay would’ve lasted longer then 2 weeks. I didn’t feel like Tess and Colten had a lot of chemistry/were in love by then end of their time together. I loved the found family aspects and they were thoroughly fleshed out. If the romance was as amazing as that, this would easily be a five star read!
I was plesantly surprised by The Right Kind of Unexpected. A quick and easy read which made me fall in love with Tess and Colten. Although a bit predictable at times, I could not put this book down.
This felt like Schitt’s Creek meets The Notebook, to me.
With the premise that a girls boyfriend takes off in her car with her things, leaving her stranded at the gas station, how could you not be intrigued? I was hooked from page one. This is a perfect quick summer read. I think the characters and the setting were really well developed, helping me fall right into the story. I found each character lovable and relatable. I want to spend my summer in Jasper’s Creek with Tess, Colton, Naomi, & Sri!
