I truly loved this book, it truly wasn't what i expected . The independence that Tess displays wanting even though she comes from money . I am thankful that i was given this arc from the publisher and Netgalley!
This is a cute, easy summer read. The writing is weak, even for what it is, and I really can’t stand books that just throw you right in without any build up to the conflict. Lots of showing not telling. But this is cute and easy enough and some people out there will like it.
3.5 !! this book was so cute and it’s such a feel-good summer read. all the characters were so wholesome even tho it was kinda cheesy at times
also the jump in time made it so much better it genuinely is the best trope
This had cute moments but felt pretty standard.
I'm personally not a fan of books where the entire plot resolves around two characters not being together out of fear of breaking up. To me, it causes the story to become frustrating and makes it no longer satisfying when the characters eventually get together. It felt like the only obstacle Colten and Tess overcame was just changing their minds.
I didn't really like the time skip in this one either. Time skips can be done well, and I understand why it was necessary for this story, but it felt like the time skip should have been positioned either closer to the middle of the book or closer to the end. Time skips really slow down the momentum of a story, and the way it was positioned made a lot of the post-time-skip events feel like filler.
I did enjoy the writing, so even though this particular story didn't work for me, I'd be interested in reading another book by this author.
Content: a few fade-to-black scenes, some language
If you're looking for a fun, summer romance meets drama, then this book is right up your alley!
When Tess is stranded in Jasper Creek after her ex-boyfriend drives away with her car and all her belongings, the Reed family step in and become everything Tess could have dreamed of. Along this journey, she also meets Colten Reed, a handsome mechanic, who Tess cannot seem to stop thinking about.
There were points in the book that did fall a bit flat for me, and at times I wanted to stop reading but nevertheless I think it was a fun book about love and the importance of family and friends, and a perfect YA read to lift your spirits!
This was a cute summer read. She ends up getting abandoned at a small town gas station/diner after a crappy boyfriend takes off with her car, cell, and wallet. She finds the nicest people in existence who just happen to have an age appropriate super hot son. They give her a safe place to live and work and she finds everything she was missing from her life up in NYC.
There's a time jump and I didn't mind it one bit. I think the story needed it. I just wish she had kept in touch with everyone at least a little bit in the off page time. I appreciated her relationships with everyone in the book but really liked how she won over Jed, the grumpiest of grumpy old men.
Thank you to Netgalley, Toad Tree Press, and Rayna York for a copy in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of "The Right Kind of Unexpected" by Rayna York!
This novel tells the story of a teenager named Tess who is traveling to Disney with her boyfriend named Dax, who leaves her stranded in a gas station while she has to go to the bathroom. He has driven away with everything - her luggage, her wallet, her phone, etc. Colten's family owns the gas station as well as the nearby diner and mechanics shop on the same lot and offer to let her stay in the apartment above the restaurant.
Tess falls in love with the town of Jasper - and with Colten. When he pushes too far, Tess returns home to New York for college and to sort out the mess of her family life with her parents, who were touring Europe at the time of her arrival in the small town. The other characters (the friends Tess makes throughout the book) are also well-written. Watching Colten's family embrace Tess as their own was very heartwarming as well.
Overall, I would rate this novel a 4/5 stars! Definitely would read again! The only part I was not a fan of was the number of times her and Colten's height difference was mentioned throughout the novel. We get it - she's short, and he's tall!
The Right Kind of Unexpected by Rayna York
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5 stars
This was a super cute YA romance that gives all the small town vibes. I’m gonna need to go find the Earls in my town.
The characters in this story were super cute and Colten was swoon worthy. Tess was a relatable character and I was rooting for her until the very end.
I was so happy when she went back to Jasper creek, y’all! It’s a true testament to the saying the sometimes family is found. Her parents weren’t very involved so she found her family and I loved that.
The only complaint that I had with this book was the writing style. It was hard to follow at times and felt jumbled.
Overall, this story is a feel good, small town romance and I definitely recommend it! Perfect summery vibes.
Colten and Tess!
They are adorable and you will automatically fall for them. And then they will break your heart.
The Reed family. Yes, they are the perfect family and you will fall for them too. They go through their own heartaches and self discovery.
The people of Jasper Creek! From the grouchy ones to the in your face ones and everyone in between they are friends turned family and will always have your back.
Tess gets abandoned in Jasper Creek by her (now ex) boyfriend. She comes from a very different world and could have easily left town without a second thought but you’ll definitely want to stick around and find out the story of the girl and the boy who met in bad situation and where their story takes them…
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy in exchange for review!!
A fun YA read!
Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review your titles. I really not the opportunity!
I do appreciate it and continue to review books that I get the chance to read.
Thanks again!
The romance was super cute and I loved how deep they loved each other. The four year time jump really threw me off though. I think the book should have started with that and then had that summer be a flashback, I just think it would be more cohesive.
Also it's 2022, can we stop having HP references in books?
I received an arc through netgalley
I thought it was going to be a fun read. A classic contemporary with a feel-good moment of getting things back on track, with a big dose of sexy chemistry between the main character and her new love interest.. But it was just really dull. The writing felt like a teenager had written it for English class. A lot of he said, she said, he said… The characters didn’t make me care for them, and especially the main character Tess who I just found really annoying. The book just fell pretty flat for me in many aspects, and I was really tempted to not finish it.
What an emotional read!
Poor Tess has had it rough. Despite the fact her parents are extremely wealthy, she's learned money can't buy everything. Like love and affection. It's no surprise when she meets the Reed family, she yearns for what they have.
With the numerous times Colten brings up Tess's family money, I wanted hit him with one of his wrenches. While I enjoyed both characters, there were times Colten made me grind my teeth. I understood his hesitancy once we learned more about his past, but he came across as a jerk quite a few times.
Colten's family are super sweet. At first, his mom seemed like she'd be a problem. And there were times she acted a bit out of character (to me). Overall, I liked the secondary characters in the story. They added a richness, and I loved seeing Tess and Colten interact with everyone.
The Right Kind of Unexpected was full of drama, angst, summer love, and heartache. I couldn't put it down once I started reading, and I now want to see what else the author has available. Definitely a book I'll remember for a while.
Tess has had a rough start to what was supposed to be her fun-filled summer vacation to Disney World. Things had already not been going well with her boyfriend at the time, Dax, and when they stopped at a gas station along the way, she had prepped herself in the bathroom to break up with him and turn back around to go home. Only when she goes outside, Dax is nowhere to be seen, and neither is her wallet or car. Rather than admit defeat to her less than caring parents, Tess decides to stay and work for the family who runs the gas station/diner/car garage that she was ditched at, finding herself more and more attracted to the family's son, Colten. There, she finds a home like she's never known and a family like she's never had. Will she stay at the end of summer, or will she run home to the life of privilege she left behind?
The only thing unexpected in "The Right Kind of Unexpected" was how much I absolutely loved and adored this story. The characters felt so real and palpable that it made me want to immerse myself in Jasper Creek along with the rest of them. Every friendship and relationship built was so interesting and wholesome that you can't help but be sucked in. The chemistry between Colten and Tess is electrifying and despite a few hiccups, their love is the cutest. It was fast-paced and well-written, and I couldn't get enough of it. It is absolutely the perfect summer read and one that I'll be recommending to everyone who will listen to me!
I loved this book. It was so sweet and showed not all of humanity is terrible. Couldn't put it down!
FLEW through this excellent, incredible book. Tightly written, earnest, laugh-out-loud funny at several parts—one of the best YA books I've read in ages
