A Sliver of Darkness provides readers with a twisty and disturbing good time!
Like most short story collections some of these were more successful than others but I felt that they all were engaging and delightfully bizarre! There's a lovely introduction from the author too that adds a personal touch that enhances the reading experience.
This would make a lovely addition to a horror fanatics library!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the review copy.
As a huge fan of this author’s previous books, I was excited to give this book of short stories a read. She said that these were all ideas for novels that she never seemed to be able to flush out into a full story, so she turned them into a collection of short stories instead. As expected, some were better than others and some felt more finished than others but overall this was creepy and dark and just what I have come to expect from CJ Tudor.
I think my favorite of the stories has to be “The Block” This is the kind of thing that haunts my dreams and to see it played out before my eyes was super creepy! But so well done. The descriptions were so vivid and detailed that it made it realistic.
The other one that stood out was “Runaway Blues” abakut a blues singer and his girlfriend and wow was I way off on how that story went!
I liked that before each story there was a brief introduction as to where the inspiration came from for it by the author. Overall, this was enjoyable and entertaining.
Thanks to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.
I am not normally the type of person who enjoys short story compilations, but this was definitely different. Each story has its own life and viewpoint, but all of them are frightening. Now I am not one to be scared by a book or movie so when I say that more than one of these tales scared me senseless, please know this is a high bar to clear. The stories were so interesting, but short and sweet, that I tore through this book pretty quickly. Having read other books by C.J. Tudor, I knew the writing would be on point, but I didn't know to the extent I would be spooked. The stories were so different and interesting but at the same time relatable. I highly recommend this if you want something different, something that will truly scare you, or something that will just catch your interest for a quick read!
This ebook was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Huge thank you to NetGalley, Ballantine books, and CJ Tudor for an advance copy of this book!
Y’all! I love a good collection of short stories! Tudor is an auto buy author of mine so I was beyond excited for this, especially as it sounded like a perfect spooky season read.
I was not disappointed! Each story has a brief introduction by Tudor, which I liked because it gives you a look into the author’s process.
10 creepy stories. Each one is different, but they’re all great reads.
Publication day is November 8. Make sure you grab a copy!
I'm really picky about short stories usually, but I really enjoyed this collection! The author starts each story off with a backstory of what inspired that particular story and where she was when the idea came to her and that's not something I've seen before and I thought it was a nice touch!
The stories themselves all manged to stand on their own and he incredibly creepy -- I really hope a few of them end up as full novels!
This was not what I was expecting but I really enjoyed it! Its been a really long time since I read a short story collection and each one really drew me in. I enjoyed the authors writing and it was perfect for spooky season!
I don’t read many short stories. When I do, I pledge to read more, and then don’t until an author I enjoy reading releases a short story collection, such as A Sliver of Darkness.
With varying horrors as the theme, this collection ventures into the dystopian and fantastic. I confess to being lukewarm to the bulk of them. In The Lion at the Gate, the text doesn’t always fit the story. The four teens were gathered together with the scenery described as: “The leaves had lost their fragile grip on the trees.” While I appreciate the flowy text, it doesn’t work well when the story involves 4 teenagers.
Final Course was a blast. It was creepy, and the post-apocalyptic vibe happening makes it my favorite of the stories. I like the introduction to each story, giving the reader a bit of background about where or how the story originated. It provides some insight into the author’s inner workings.
Overall, this was a fun read. The stories were just short enough that you could read a few in one sitting and set it away for another time. Thank you, Random House/Ballantine, for sending this along!
Where there is no imagination, there is no horror.
A Sliver of Darkness brings something to mind. What scares me, scares you. The mind blasts thoughts throughout our psyche at a rapid speed. We don't even have to touch the tangible outright to configure thoughts of horrid darkness, slimey ooze, forming ear worms like creaking stairs and ghoulish howls.
And to those who don't heed the warning: Never "investigate" these things on your own......
C.J. Tudor has banded together some CREEP on high alert. Each of these stories goes off into a different direction and a different level of intensity. She's crafted ideas based on unfinished work sitting on the sidelines begging for attention. Tudor has breathed life into them as only she can. And she points out how the life experiences and heavy personal loss changes us drastically. We are not the same as we were just a few years ago. The world itself speaks to this from the impact of the pandemic. We see through different eyes. More leery and more distrusting of outcomes.
The set-up is important here. Tudor writes a bit of an introduction before each story. We then get a feel for where she was at the time and what exactly triggered her thoughts. We fail to remember that authors paddle through life as the rest of us do. Life readily changes us.
My favorite of these was "The Block" which leans more to YA in some ways because of the characters. She takes us to Nottingham where an old abandoned building stands in decay. And here comes the dare......the notable push by the young to reach farther than what one's fear capacity is. It is the stuff of nightmares......even with big people.
So consider this one for a chill and a thrill. Perhaps take to your bed under the covers with a flashlight. Ah, the memories.......
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Ballantine Books (Random House) and to the talented C.J. Tudor for the opportunity.
I like reading anthologies. Sometimes my brain isn’t able to process longer books (my attention span can be shot at times). But I wouldn’t say I like reviewing them. I write long reviews because I want to cover each story and give it the attention I think it deserves. I am not going to do that with this review. I am a little crunched for time (I am writing this on Halloween and I have a bunch of things to do/get ready for on top of my usual Monday morning routine). So, this review is going to be short.
A Sliver of Darkness had an exciting mix of short stories. The author did keep my attention because these stories were not cookie-cutter. Also, the author did something that I wasn’t expecting. She wrote a little forward to each story to explain why she wrote it. I loved it!!
I had two favorite stories out of the eleven that were published. They are End of the Liner, and I’m not Ted. My least favorite one was Gloria, only because I hadn’t read her featured book.
This short story collection would have been perfect for reading in October. Each story was creepy in its way.
I would recommend A Sliver of Darkness to anyone over 21. There is language and violence but no sex.
What a terrific thought provoking collection of 11 stories that you should not read right before bed. That's contrary to my usual guidance with short stories. It's not because Tudor is a master of horror and thrills (which she is) but because she is an expect at writing thought provoking tales. Isolation figures in along with some apocalyptic themes but there's also a bit of humor and always a twist. I liked that she introduces the stories with a personal note (I recognize others might prefer detachment). My favorite - End of the Liner. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. It's a good read.
I did not realize this was a collection of short stories. Let me begin by saying, short stories are not my favorite, but I do enjoy them. However, I did not love these. I didn't feel like they were all written well and some of the stories were hard to keep straight.
Overall, this was just an average read for me. I really enjoyed the introductions to each story and reading where the inspiration came from. Also, I enjoyed the isolation themes found throughout the book. It's one of my favorite tropes in horror novels! While I enjoyed the premise and intent, I don't feel like most of the stories reached their fullest potential. They either felt incomplete, or just too tame/boring to be honest. Still looking forward to the author's new novel due out in 2023!
A Sliver of Darkness by CJ Tudor ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Thank you to @netgalley and Ballantine Books for the eARC! This one comes out next week!
Full disclosure - I typically don’t gravitate toward short stories. However, I love all things CJ Tudor, so I thought what the heck?
These stories were totally creepy and a bit horrific. My favorites were I’m Not Ted, Runaway Blues, The Copy Shop, and Gloria. The intros at the beginning of each story elevated them; I really enjoyed seeing Tudor’s inspirations for each twisted tale.
The stories all felt like they were from the same apocalyptic world, which I enjoyed. While I don’t know if I’ll continue reading short story collections after this, I do know I’ll continue to read Tudor’s works.
*4+ stars!
Perfect choice for Horror week leading up to Halloween--a collection of short stories masterfully written by CJ Tudor. She begins each with a short introduction detailing how the idea for the story came to her. Quite a few of them are apocalyptic in theme but all are gripping and occasionally gruesome tales of horror. Quick reading and very entertaining.
I received an arc from the author and publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to reading her next book, The Drift, publishing in January!
This book gave me a new appreciation for short stories! While I have ordered singular short stories in the past, usually a mini book in a series (i.e. the ".5") I have never read a collection of short stories before. I am big on synopses and blurbs and knowing what the book is about. However, I have read C.J. Tudor and know how deliciously twisted her books are so I was excited to read her collection of short stories contained in "A Sliver of Darkness" due out 11/8/22.
To my surprise, she included a brief introduction before each story with background on where she got her idea. I absolutely loved this feature.
I am not sure how she managed to put such life and personality into the characters while keeping the story short, but I found myself invested in each and every story.
This collection is perfect for spooky season! But if you scare easy - read them during the day.
Thank you so much Netgalley, Ballantine Books and C.J. Tudor for allowing me to read and review an ARC! I thoroughly enjoyed these twisted tales. Review to be posted on Goodreads, Amazon, Bookstagram and Barnes and Noble.
Horror novels are great, but there's something so satisfying about being able to move from one terrifying scenario to the next in quick succession.
C. J. Tudor does an excellent job with a small amount of pages; her settings, world-building, and--most importantly--ability to create an ominous sense of dread all come through in her work. Each story is slightly different in its tone and the themes it covers--some are more gory; some rely on psychological horror; some are funny with incidental horror. Her introduction before each story also enriches them and makes them more enjoyable.
As with any collection, some of the stories are stronger than others; standouts for me are "End of the Liner," "Final Course," and "The Copy Shop." But they are all Solid Spooky Season Stories.
Short stories, sign me up When I saw this in my inbox I couldnt download it fast enough and it's C.J. Tudor so it's a win all around. I read a story everyday instead of reading all at once I enjoyed them all I don't think I have a favorite but if I had to choose Runaway Blues stands out. I highly recommend reading the author's note it was very interesting.
If you like scary in small batches but has a punch this ones for you. Enjoy!!
This is perfect for spooky season.
My thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the ARC (Widget) in exchange for an honest review.
If you enjoy short stories, and more specifical short HORROR stories, you will enjoy this book. It is a quick read with 10 stories that are creepy, eerie, and haunting. I'm a fan of CJ Tudor's books and I felt like these short stories definitely fit with her writing style and depict the horror genre perfectly. They were so imaginative. I also enjoyed her "Introduction" at the beginning of each one to understand where the story came from in her mind.
From one of my ABSOLUTE favorite authors comes a collection of short stories that span the horror and thriller gamut.
This is such a dark and twisted read that I loved so much. It’s starts off with a bang and ends on an even higher note. Within these pages are eleven stories that are each chilling in their own way.
I also really loved the author’s note at the beginning of this book, explaining exactly why this collection came about. Truly ,Tudor is an absolute master at supernatural thriller and this collection completely solidifies my love for the writing.
Short story collections are hit or miss for me but I really enjoyed this collection. The first story end of the liner was my favorite and would like to see a full length novel with the plot point. I really liked how the author introduced each story with how she came to write them. This really added to the reading experience. I love Ms Tudor’s writing and am excited to see what she writes next. I just reviewed A Sliver of Darkness by C. J. Tudor. #ASliverofDarkness #NetGalley
