Izzy’s gift could also be described as a curse. Her strong empathetic abilities mean that she can read the emotions of those around her and can tell when they are lying. When a local girl goes missing and her school’s caretaker appears on television interview discussing what he saw, Izzy immediately knows he is lying. Informing the police, she knows that it is unlikely she will be taken seriously so despite being discouraged, she begins to investigate, putting herself in potential danger and alienating herself from the few people she has on her side.
One of the things I like most about David Jackson’s writing is his ability to come up with novel concepts for a plot. In No Secrets, what could have been a straightforward police procedural is turned completely on its head with the main character being a concerned member of the public with no connection to the missing girl. Izzy is a great character who I actually cared about and although she was clearly, at times, putting herself in danger, I could see why she refused to give up on her search for the truth.
There is also a fantastic supporting cast of characters with Josh, the police officer tasked with investigating the case, being a particular favourite. His scenes with Izzy were a joy to read, filled with humour and sadness. This is a stark contrast to several of the other characters whose scenes made my skin crawl!
Although this is very much a character-driven novel, there is also a gripping plot that kept me hooked right until the last page, testing my emotions as we discover exactly what has been happening. The prologue definitely whetted my appetite for what was to come and I was not disappointed in what was to be a well-written, breath-taking read.
Izzy has a special skill, she can tell when someone is telling a lie. So when she's sees someone she used to know on TV talking about a missing girl she knows he's lying.
What follows is a cat and mouse game to get to the truth.
This was really enjoyable read it will keep you on the edge of your seat. Izzy was a great character too and I loved her determination throughout. And anything with a twist at the end gets a big thumbs up from me.
I have read and loved a lot of books by David Jackson so I was really keen to read his new one no Secrets. This was pretty different to his other books, in that it was more of a character driven story than a dark and messed up crime story. Don’t get me wrong, there is still that element there, but this had a more in depth look at our main character Izzy.
Izzy was an interesting character. She has the ability to know when someone is lying and is empathetic. She can read people like a book, and she works in a bookstore 😅 Her gift is not always a blessing and she doesn’t like to talk about it, But when she sees a witness to a crime on TV lie about what he saw, she is compelled to tell the police.
The police don’t necessarily believe her, this man is tricky. But she preserves and put herself and those around her in danger. I am not going to say anymore for fear of spoilers, but it was a great read that really hooked me in,
Thanks to Viper Books and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read.
No Secrets - David Jackson
I enjoyed David Jackson's The Rule so was keen to read this.
Izzy Lambert has a gift, she's highly empathic and can tell when people are lying. This is a blessing and curse, and when she knows a witness to a crime is lying she is compelled to take action.
It's an unusual character driven crime novel, the main suspect is identified early on. Very much about the characters and relationships, alongside the crimes.
It's a very enjoyable book, I was reminded at times of two of my favourite authors, Belinda Bauer and Mark Tilbury.
While not especially tense for the most part, it really ramps up towards the end and finishes superbly. I had tears in my eyes by the end.
Definitely recommended if you are looking for a different, more character driven crime novel.

Well written, with an engaging and compelling plot and well developed characters. It was fast paced, twisty, unpredictable and chilling. I loved it.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a free review copy in exchange for my honest, unedited feedback!
23 year old Izzie Lambert has a gift of being able to read other peoples emotions and can tell when someone is lying. So when Izzie sees a news report on the TV and learns that a woman is missing, she feels compelled to reach out to the police to offer her help. It’s difficult to say too much without giving spoilers, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Having been a fan of David Jackson for quite some time, I’m always very eager to read his new novels as they never disappoint!
After The Resident and The Rule, what I’ve come to expect from this author is a thrilling pageturner, most likely featuring a creepy bloke. No sooner had I started No Secrets or those boxes all had big fat ticks.
Everybody lies and everyone has secrets, and it’s usually not that hard to keep them hidden, but for the people Izzy knows, there are no secrets, she sees right through them. Izzy is something of a natural mentalist. She sort of determines a baseline for a person, based on things like microexpressions and mannerisms, and once she has that, dishonesty of any kind just becomes blatantly obvious to her. She doesn’t even try, if anything she’d rather be rid of this so-called gift that has given her little but heartache over the years.
When a teenage girl goes missing from Izzy’s former high-school, Izzy happens to see a news report in which the school caretaker is interviewed as an eyewitness. To all intents and purposes, he seems quite trustworthy, but Izzy knew him pretty well back in the day, she has his baseline, and she knows everything he’s just said is just a load of bollocks.
Encouraged by her partner, Izzy notifies the police, but they just think she’s either a crackpot or a conspiracy theorist. Or maybe just a silly girl looking for her fifteen minutes of fame. Izzy is none of those things and she can’t let it go. As the days pass and events unfold, she becomes so obsessed that not only she but also the people she loves may be in danger.
Izzy was a breath of fresh air and a fascinating point of view. I always enjoy thrillers with an edge, a bit of pizzazz, a little something that makes them stand out, and that is what Izzy is for No Secrets. I really liked her, I found her very believable as a girl who sees too much and wants to do good only to have it blow up in her face time and again.
No Secrets had me turning the pages as fast as I could and I flew through it in an afternoon, I just had to know how it would all end. Fast-paced and highly entertaining, I had a fantastic time with it and I would happily recommend it to fans of the genre.
No Secrets is out on 7 July in digital formats, audio and hardcover.
Massive thanks to Viper Books and NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
There's something to be said that I requested this book before I'd even read the synopsis. So sure was I that it would be another five star read from David Jackson that I pounced as soon as I saw it was available on Netgalley. Unfortunately, it wasn't as great as his previous two novels but was still an entertaining, original story that kept me captivated.
Izzy Lambert has a special gift. She always knows when someone is lying, and often times her intuition has been used to her advantage. When she sees Kenneth Plumbley on television describing the car a young girl got into the day she went missing, Izzy immediately knows he's lying. Unfortunately, the police don't and Izzy decides she's going to catch Plumbley herself. The main reason this isn't getting five stars is Izzy. She was completely annoying and unrealistic. I'm sorry, no woman would behave like that when confronted by a man they were convinced was a serial killer. There was also a lot of unnecessary drama with her partner that could've been cut. The lead detective was also quite annoying, as was Plumbley's wife Polina. In fact, there wasn't a single character I was rooting for and I'm glad for most of their outcomes.
Aside from the characters, the story line was intense and I looked forward to how it was all going to end. This seemed pretty tame on violence compared to his other work, however there was some animal death off page. David Jackson has a knack for creating an original idea. I often think his ideas would make a great story but how would he drag it out for 300+ pages without padding? Somehow, he always does it. No Secrets had many twists and turns and one hell of an ending. Can't wait for the next one.

Abounds With Tension…
Izzy Lambert has a gift. It’s one that she keeps to herself as a rule but no one can get away with lying to Izzy. She will know. When a series of terrifying events in her home town mean that Izzy needs to share her knowledge and power she contacts the police. The trouble is that they simply do not believe her. What lengths will she go to in order to assist and bring justice? With a tremendously well drawn cast of characters, and a unique take on a traditional protagonist, this is a pacy, chilling and immersive mystery that abounds with tension and a well crafted plot.
23-year-old Izzy Lambert lives a quite life with her partner Andy and works at a local bookshop. Since she was born, she thinks she is cursed, or some say that she has a gift. She can read peoples emotions and can tell when someone is lying.
So, when she sees a news report on the TV regarding a woman going missing and the last person to see her is the Janitor from the school, she attended 5 years previously Kenneth Plumley. Telling the reporter that he seen her getting into a car. Izzy’s gift’ takes hold and she senses that he is lying.
Izzy gets in contact with the Police and tells her about her gift and said that they need to investigate Kenneth Plumley as he is lying and maybe somehow involved. But the Police don’t believe her, as she has no evidence to support her claim, so she takes it on herself and find out what really is going on. Can Kenneth Plumley be involved in the woman’s disappearance? How much time before someone else goes missing?
No secrets by David Jackson is the third book from the author I have read and what a great page turner this is. This is a fast paced, gritty thriller and I like the protagonist Izzy who went the extra mile to find out the truth. I found the ending to be intense and a quite surprising twist. 5 stars from me.
What an interesting and unusual thriller featuring a protagonist with a special “gift” which makes it difficult to have a normal life and to interact with other people.
It’s quite difficult to say much about the story without revealing spoilers but suffice to say that there a surprises/shocks aplenty, and the final reveal is pretty shocking.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read this ARC.
What a page-turner!
This is my first time reading a novel by David Jackson, and I received a free review copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest unedited feedback.
The book focuses on 23-year-old Izzy, who is "cursed." Not in the literal sense of the word, but she has this particular gift when she can realize whether the people around her are telling the truth or not.
Her simple life is completely turned upside down when she sees an interview with the caretaker from her old school, where he talks about a missing girl. She immediately knows he's lying, but no one, absolutely no one believes her.
She launches her own investigation when the police don't believe her much and she is relentless.
I gotta admit, Izzy is incredibly well written and I couldn't help but like her. Usually, 23-year-olds are insufferable and selfish and all about that, but all her inner struggles are so understandable and relatable.
Her relationship with Andy is just so natural and beautiful and #goals I just can't even. I love the support between them, and I love how naturally she connects with people around her, although she can't believe it.
Josh was also a very well-written character who we got to see quite a while throughout the book.
I absolutely loooved all the twists and turns, I was definitely not expecting any of it. I would definitely recommend this to any thriller lover, it's just amazing.
Thank you NetGalley and Viper / Serpent’s Tail for this one, it was sooooooo good.
Isobel Lambert has a gift, she can tell when people are lying. Watching the news she sees an interview with the caretaker from her old school. A female pupil from the school has gone missing and the caretaker, Kenneth Plumley, was the last person to see her as she got into a large black car. Isobel is convinced the caretaker is lying but will the police believe her when he has no evidence?
I really enjoyed this book and flew through it, desperate to know what was going to happen next. After the disturbing opening chapter author David Jackson then spends time developing the characters of Isobel and Kenneth. Kenneth is a sinister and unsettling character, at times a meek cuckold and at others malevolent.
It is the character of Isobel that really makes this story. She doesn't see her gift as a gift, previous experience has shown that it can be a curse. However she knows she has to do the right thing, but how can she convince the police when she doesn't have any real evidence? Her tenacity means that she puts both herself and those close to her in danger as she tries to prove that Kenneth is responsible for the girl going missing.
As well as fleshing out the main characters really well David Jackson has done an excellent job with some of the minor characters too. Andy, Josh and Abel are people you'd like to get to know better, while Polina and Michael will make your skin crawl.
While the conclusion wasn't a complete surprise I wasn't entirely sure I'd figured out exactly what was happening until the big reveal. The reader isn't quite sure who is going to survive either.
I more or less read this is one sitting.
Izzy's abilities allow her to read people's emotions and i don't think this is a skill i would want! The problem she has is to convince the police she knows more than they do!
This is a creepy twisty tale which may leave you restless as it did me.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an early copy in return for my honest review.
No Secrets is a highly entertaining read with a main character who has a somewhat unusual “super power” that drives the narrative well.
There are a number of twists and turns right up to the end of this enjoyable book which is recommended.
Talk about a page turner! I read this basically in one sitting. David Jackson’s writing style has such a compulsive quality to it you can’t help but just keep reading. I enjoyed the characters particularly the development of the relationship between Izzy and Josh, the added element of Izzy’s empathic gift made for an interesting plot point which gave this mystery thriller a standout element.
My only negative is that I found some parts slightly repetitive, which distracted very slightly from the story line. But this is just a small gripe.
Highly recommend this novel and I will be checking out other books by this author.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and Serpent’s Tail/Viper/Profile books for providing early copy in exchange for my honest review
Izzy Lambert has been a loner all her life, mainly due to her ‘gift’. She works in a local bookshop and lives with her partner, Andy.
When she sees the caretaker from the school she had attended on the news saying he saw a girl being abductees, Izzy knows without a doubt that he is lying. You see, Izzy’s ‘gift’ is that she can read people’s emotions and knows when someone is lying.
Can Izzy get the police to believe her when there is no evidence to support her claims and not have them thinking she is a crackpot?!!
I liked the character of Josh, the police officer involved in the case, you couldn’t not warm to him. I felt sorry for Izzy who struggled with her gift, she was an interesting character.
This thriller was gripping from the very start. It was intense and at times creepy too. Superb twists that caught me out every time! I didn’t sleep much last night as this is one of those books that you have to know what is happening next and I found I couldn’t put it down!
My thanks to NetGalley and Viper Books for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
I flew through this book it was so compulsive I just needed to know the outcome so much so I just ignored real life and read and read until I finished it with a very satisfied smile on my face !
It’s a real twisty story with some brilliant characters and although a dark tale it’s also told with plenty humour and I particularly like the rapport between Izzy and Josh. I have loved all the books I have read by this author and never been disappointed he seems to have a knack of drawing you into a story right from the off and keeping the suspense going throughout.
So a great read and I can highly recommend but be warned once you pick this one up you won’t want to put it down!
My thanks to NetGalley and Serpent’s Tail / Viper / Profile Books for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a very good read by author David Jackson. Every book I read by this author has me turning the pages as quick as possible in anticipation. What I really like about David Jackson is the ideas he comes up with for his exciting plots. In this one it is a character with the ability to read peoples emotions.
Izzy Lambert is a bit of a loner and has been all her life. Seen as a strange child in her youth and not a lot has changed since. She enjoys her job working in a bookshop but little else happens in her life. She discovered at an early age that she could read peoples emotions and easily identify when someone was lying. Her ability did not endear her to people and she hid it in fear of them thinking she was some kind of oddball.
When a young local girl goes missing the police are hitting dead ends and have no clear leads on the case. But when Izzy’s old school caretaker is interviewed on the news about the story she senses that he is not telling the truth. She becomes convinced that he is telling lies and knows where the missing girl is. The problem is she is going to struggle to get the local police to take her serious when she tries to convince them. With lives at stake she feels it is critical that she makes them believe her.
This was an exciting read, great characters and an intriguing plot. I sort of guessed what was going to happen but it didn’t deter from my overall enjoyment.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Serpent’s Tail for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
