An informative, clearly written middle-grade biography of Celia Cruz, this book is part of the Hispanic Star Series. Seven chapters detail her rise to become an energetic, entertaining singer with a worldwide audience. Her large heart embraced many sources of music and she showed pure joy in performing. Ultimately, her break with Fidel Castro led to her move to the US, where she later lived.

The writing is friendly. In fact, several times the author speaks directly to the reader to provide background information ("We need to talk about something before we presume to intrude on the next moment of grief and shock.") or to direct the reader to take an action ("Find a song, and listen again. Let her voice yeah you the any meanings of quimbara and azucar.")

Back matter includes an author's note emphasizing the connection between history and art The illustrations consist of drawings. Photographs, a bibliography, links to videos of Celia Cruz and audio recordings would also help support readers' understanding of this amazing woman.

Overall, it's good to see this focused series, which provides useful and inspiring material to young readers.
