Sally Hepworth has done it again! This is another great domestic thriller with a compulsively readable plot. While some domestic thrillers drag, there were constant little points of intrigue throughout as we tried to figure out the truth about the husband. The resolution was satisfying and this was a quick read. Loved it!
Perfection! Each time I read one of Sally Helworth’s novels, it’s always somehow better than the last. The characters are intriguing and the storyline never lags. It’s full of twists and turns, not just at the end, but throughout. In her past novel, the author’s primary focus is on female to female relationships. She has more of an ability to put all the nuances of relationships into words somehow. In this novel, the primary focus is on romantic relationships between husbands and wives and I thought she authored that perfectly. Even with her artful construct of relationships, the thriller plot is just at well-done. One area of the novel does not suffer for another. The author has someone managed to perfect it all. I’m dying to read what she puts out next!
This was my first Sally Hepworth book and it certainly won't be my last. The Soulmate was a fast-paced, action-packed thriller that kept me intrigued from start to finish. Multiple POV's allowed you insight into various facets of the story that only added to the mystery. I felt empathy for our main character Pippa as she struggles to hold it all together, keeping the good memories at the forefront of her mind and ignoring the bad. If you are looking for a book to read that not only doesn't feel burdensome but could also get you out of a reading slump this could be the one!
OMG!! This story was was good and so intriguing!! I truly didn’t know where it was headed with the back and forth but what an ending!!! Sally’s stories are always so easy to read and this one was amazing!! Pippa and Amanda definetly lead interesting lives💜
Oh man was this a twisty and turbulent thriller. The story unfolds in 2 points of view and goes back and forth from past to present which you need to understand the threads that are unraveling as we go. Pippa is the main POV she is the wife of Gabe who is a stay at home dad to their 2 kids in their dream cottage in a sleepy coastal town. The only thing that intrudes on their perfect life is the cliffs behind their house which is a notorious area for people to commit suicide and Gabe has gotten pretty good at talking people down from the edge of the cliff and into getting help until one day he doesn’t and someone jumps who he is trying to help or is he. The other pov is of the person who died and you definitely need her history to even try to figure out what is going on here. Oh man Pippa just puts up with a lot from Gabe and as their history together unfolds you just want to ask her why are you still with this dude, just leave already. The twist and the end was a surprise and it was really engaging and I couldn’t put it down.
Thanks to St. Martins Press and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
Synopsis:
There’s a cottage on a cliff. Gabe and Pippa’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after night Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge. Until he doesn’t.
When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral...Did the victim jump? Was she pushed?
And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate...lie? As the perfect facade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel.
This one fell flat for me, simply because there was so much going on! I think that some of the facets of this plot could have been removed. It was still very interesting, but at about 75% of the way through the book the author added on one or two more layers that weren't well developed or explained, and didn't seem to just fill in a few plot holes but were actually very important to how the novel ended.
I also thought the chapters were a bit short and sometimes led to confusion in the overall plot, but maybe that was the point. The characters were likeable enough, and I thought Hepworth did a good job of revealing one of the MC's mental health issues. I could see others really enjoying this, it just wasn't mind-blowing for me.
3.5 stars. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
From the early chapters I was hooked and invested into the characters. I loved how the story unfolded through time and the twists that came to be known. The story is told in dual timelines and various perspectives. Once you think you have an idea of where the story is going it takes a turn and leaves you wanting more!
I went into this book blind and tried not to read many details of the book as there are some crazy twists that I loved! Beautifully written thriller story that draws you in. Many thanks to St. Martin Press and NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own
Oh this book! Sally Hepworth never disappoints. This book was full of twists I never saw coming. I couldn’t put it down. I loved the alternating POVs between Pippa and Amanda, the past and the present. This book kept me guessing all the way to the end.
I wanted to like this one, but something about it just didn’t work for me. There were a lot of moving pieces with connections between characters, mental health issues, marital conflict, etc. While I love a good twist, there was just too much going on here to make it work for me. And, at the risk of saying too much, I really did NOT like the ending.
I did like the additional narration from Amanda- it added a nice dynamic to the book that would’ve been otherwise missing.
Thank you St. Martins Press, NetGalley, and Sally Hepworth for allowing me this chance to read an advanced readers copy of, “The Soulmate.” It is to be published April 4th 2023.
Summary:
Gabe and Pippa and their two young children move to their dream home in a cottage on the edge of a cliff. This was supposed to be a fresh start for their marriage and to raise their two children. The house wasn’t as great as it looks though when the cliff also know as “The Spot,” has become the place where people came to end their lives. Gabe was known as the local hero in the papers and around town when he ends up saving multiple people from jumping. One night Gabe sees a woman near the edge and he wasn’t so lucky. The death was ruled a suicide but Pippa wasn’t to sure about that result. She seen gabe alone with his arms stretched out . What would you believe?
Overall this was an on the edge of your seat thriller and you have to keep reading till you find out what happens. The writing was phenomenal and the characters were described perfectly. The story was amazing I couldn’t help wondering what will happen next. But the ending could’ve had a bit more seemed like we were left hanging a little bit. But I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers.
I have a rocky relationship (pun intended, although that might be in poor taste based on the content of this novel, lol) with Sally Hepworth's work so far... I've read a few and in order of when I read them I: 1. hated 2. 'eh' feelings-- neither hated nor loved 3. loved (short story); This is number 4 and it can go in the 'liked it' category. Apparently it is a good thing I've continued to give her a chance after "The Good Sister" (ugh, makes me mad just thinking about it) because I did like this. 3.5 stars
Pub date: April 4th
Thank you to St. Martin's Press via Netgalley for this early copy to read.
I thought this was written and paced well. The story caught my attention from the first chapter as Pippa is uncertain and has questions about what she saw her husband do on a cliffside when a woman died. There are "NOW" and "THEN" chapters alternating between two women: Pippa and Amanda. I didn't find the two POV or the Then/Now hard to follow. We slowly get the two women's backstories and find that they will eventually come together. There were some twists I was surprised by, but when I thought back, the author seemed to leave just enough clues to really piece it together if I was trying hard enough.
There are strong triggers in this story which are key to the story line: suicide, mental illness, and infidelity being most prominent.
The ending was bittersweet for me, I like when everything gets wrapped up in a nice bow and this did but.... *sigh* guess that was really the only way to go.
Okay, Sally. Whatever you have next might be the determining factor of my overall opinion of your stories LOL
:-D
4.5 stars! This one had me wondering what was going to come up next. Who’s involved and how it all went down. It took me through a loop a few times and the ending was phenomenal!
It is a story about Pippa who isn’t sure what she sees when a person comes to a cliff near their home. Pippa sees her husband and this women near the cliff and next thing she knows, the person is gone. What happened? What did she REALLY see? Told from the perspectives of Pippa and the women at the cliff, this story had things come out from the woodwork that I didn’t expect to happen. There were surprises that kept me wondering if I knew what I thought I knew happened. A great read from Sally Hepworth!
I found this to be a pretty good book. Some of it was kind of predictable , but over all I enjoyed it.
Looking for an entertaining, suspenseful domestic thriller?! Sally Hepworth’s novel, The Soulmate, is a wild ride. It was an easy read wrapped in betrayal and secrets that will keep you reading and forgetting everything on your to-do list.
Gabe and Pippa have a beautiful home near the beach but right in eye sight of their house is a cliff. This cliff is quite popular not only by those wanting to take in the view but by those who want to end their life. Since they have moved there Gabe has had a knack for talking people out of making that choice until one day he doesn’t? Did she jump or does Gabe have secrets?
This is one you don’t want to miss…. available April 4th! A special thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
My Thoughts
Our main characters, husband Gabe and his Pippa Gerard, have had their ups and downs throughout the marriage.
Turns out that is the tip of a pretty rocky iceberg.
Starting over in a small coastal town, buying a dream home looking out onto the ocean and being able to enjoy not the spectacular views but awesome beach as well are just a few perks for their little family of four.
The fact the home was not represented fully by realty company, IE, not letting family know it overlooked a popular spot at cliffs edge where people came to commit suicide by jumping off it.
This oversight is brought home sooner than later and becomes a problem that affects them all in one particular death.
As the story unfolds and we learn more the shocks come back to back for reader as they also do for Gabe and Pip.
Pretty close to perfect for me but not quite all the way.
You will be amazed, amused, overwhelmed and so much more that I can’t even put into words.

On every book read as soon as it is done and written up for review it is posted on Goodreads and Netgalley, once released then posted on Amazon, Barnes and Nobles as well.
Not my favorite Sally Hepworth. Better than the Younger Wife for sure, but Sally seems to have fallen off for me as of late. It was...fine, just nothing to write home about.
I liked it!! I found myself flying through it (always a good sign) and very involved in the plot, eager to discover the missing pieces.
But yet…
I did feel it lacked something. Characters don’t have to be likable for me to love reading about them but they have to be interesting. I think in this one I just felt the characters were a little flat?
BUT I did think it was a unique story-line..
Gabe and Pippa live in a cottage with a beautiful view near a cliff that they learn is also a popular spot for people to take their lives. One night a woman is outside near the cliff and Gabe tries to rescue her. From a distance, Pippa notices from their body language there is tension and what appears to look like a confrontation. A night that ends tragically. Who is this woman? Is Gabe hiding something? What is the true nature of Gabe and Pippa’s marriage?
I liked how this book reveals the soft underbelly of two marriages that on the surface appear to be perfect but are anything but..
Is there anything you wouldn’t do for your soulmate?
Another winner for Sally Hepworth! This time she explores marriage, the good and the bad sides of it, alongside the examination of the painstakingly curated image we present to the world in our quest for perfectionism. Pippa and Gabriel Gerard have the perfect love story, an enviable marriage, sweet daughters, a supportive extended family, a beautiful home, and great jobs … but they each harbour a secret that could shatter this image of ‘perfect’. It seems everything is balancing precariously on what they choose to project to the world and each other.
Gabe is the hero after talking-down seven distraught people from the cliff out front of their home. However, his whole world begins to fall apart when he fails to save the eighth jumper.
Pippa is the enviable mother who balances a professional career and the care of two sweet girls. She believes her secret is safe until her world falls apart after the incident on the cliff.
The progressively short chapters, the web of deceit and the unravelling of secrets kept me captivated. The twists kept me guessing who the villain was and I loved that each chapter revealed a little more of their story. I loved the structure of this book; the opportunity to hear everyone’s point of view. Most of all - I loved the whiplash ending.
Hepworth explores loyalty, love, postnatal depression, adultery, mental illness, suicide and grief but handles them with the sensitivity you’d expect from an established author. Her examination of ‘picture perfect’ is a 5-star read and will leave you wondering…which ones were the soulmates?
“Sometimes the road to our destination leads us in a direction we don’t want to take. But does it matter, in the end, if it gets us where we want to go?”
This domestic suspense is a quick-read, full of surprises and is one you’ll want to put on your reading list now.
I was gifted this copy by St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
What an absolutely fabulous, twisty read The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is! It grabs you right from the start and never lets up until the very end.
Full of layers upon layers of secrets and revelations, The Soulmate continues to take the reader's breath away throughout the book. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Hepworth tosses another twist into the fray, and you actually find yourself wondering how you didn't see it coming.
The book is an expertly woven tale of relationships and love between couples and family, of mental illness and how it effects those relationships, of different types of marriage and the importance of communication between those types. It is riveting in its complexity, and keeps you turning the pages and staying up far too late for your own good.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC of this wonderful tale.
I really enjoyed this thriller written by one of my favorite authors. You really never know what to expect in a Sally Hepworth novel other than a good story with twists somewhere along the way. The Soulmate is no exception. Gabe and Pippa are a young married couple who live in a beautiful cliff-side cottage with their two daughters. Their house is next to a cliff called the "Drop" which has been used for suicide in the past. Gabe has spoken with potential suicide victims in the past, trying to stop them from jumping. When a young woman appears on the the cliff, Gabe goes up to speak with her, After some time, Pippa looks up to see Gabe alone with his arms outstretched. Gabe tells his wife that he was unable to stop her from falling to her death.
As the story unfolds, the reader finds out that this couple had many secrets. They become involved in a police investigation that strains their tenuous marriage.
This was a well-written book that kept me interested the whole time. I highly recommend it.
