Mysteries are really something I have only started enjoying within the past few years but I tend so be particular so I am always on the look out for new authors. This was my first book by Hepworth and it wasn’t what I was hoping for. The premise sounded like exciting but as soon as we hit a chapter by a ghost it lost me and just kept getting more and more outlandish. With every over the top addition I found myself rolling my eyes rather than wondering what was coming next. This wasn’t a taut examination of trust and relationships. In fact the central relationships in the book made me wonder why they were all even together anyway. Clearly a Hepworth has a huge fan base and I am glad I was given the opportunity to give her books a try. Now I know they aren’t for me.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I'm a huge Sally Hepworth fan and was so excited to receive an early copy to read! Holy plot twists! This book has a few of them and they were amazing! I could not put it down. The story is told in dual POV’s alternating between Pippa and Amanda. This book left me speechless which doesn’t happen too often. It was refreshing to read a thriller that was actually thrilling. Pippa and Gabe live with their two daughters in a house on a cliff known as “The Spot”. The Spot was a place where people went to end their lives. Gabe managed to talk a number of people down however, on this particular night he doesn’t. As the situation unfolds Pippa sees everything from the window and notices the outward position of Gabe’s arms. The death was rule a suicide, but Pippa isn’t so sure.
Pippa finds out Gabe knew the victim. As she digs for the truth more secrets come to light. What really happened that night? Can she trust her husband?
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this digital arc
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 I Liked It. I was caught up from the beginning where you find out where this family lives and what happens right at the start. Plenty of turns along the way. The ending kept me from liking it more, it was ok but seemed rushed with new info.
Thank you @netgalley for the ARC

There’s a cottage on a cliff. Gabe and Pippa’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after night Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge. Until he doesn’t.
When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral...Did the victim jump? Was she pushed?
This one is told from two point of views. Pippa and Amanda (the dead woman). Between the two of them we learn all the secrets. This one is full of twists all the way to the end. It also deals with mental health issues and how they affect everyone in the family not just the afflicted. I finished this one in just a couple of sittings as it was propulsive and fast paced.
I was given a copy to review from NetGalley and the publisher. My opinions are my own.
A "perfect" marriage or so it seems on the outside. Pippa believes that Gabe is her soulmate, the answer to all her questions, but is he really being truthful when he says that he had nothing to do with the woman who falls off the cliff just outside their home? I enjoyed peeling back the layers of their complicated relationship as we progress through the book. As expected, this was a solid, nailbiting psychological thriller with a few unexpected twists.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm really not sure what to write for this review. I did enjoy the book but it definitely was not one of my favorites. It didn't hold my full attention and make me excited to keep reading.
It was very interesting to see how different the two couples in the story are though. To see the outcomes from what could be considered a slow burn relationship and a fast one. I also did like being able to get into the mindset of both Pippa and Amanda. Especially being able to see the before and after on both of their parts.
Overall, while I might not have loved this book I would definitely give this author another shot.
What really happened on the cliff? That’s the question.
This story mainly revolves around two couples – Gabe & Pippa and Amanda & Max. The story switches between Pippa and Amanda’s points of view while also switching between ‘past’ and ‘present’. We are left wondering how are they connected? Little hints are given throughout the book leaving the reader to ponder all the possible scenarios. Just when I thought I might have figured it out, there is another twist. I love a book that keeps me guessing and this book did not disappoint.
Sally Hepworth never lets me down! This book was wonderful and i loved every minute of it! Finished it in one sitting.
I read this book in a day and a half! I could not put it down! It was such a compelling story! I have read this author before so I knew it would be a good book. She has presented a character with Bipolar disorder in such an accurate way, right down to the misdiagnosis before the final diagnosis. I loved the characters and really came to feel for Pippa as a woman in love who tries her best to love and support her husband through multiple episodes. I also like the extended family's involvement and the back story of Gabe's family. I was still surprised by the ending which is what makes a great book to me. That 'I did not see that coming' factor. Thanks Sally, for another great book. I will be watching for the next one.
This was my second book by Sally Hepworth and I just loved it. I got this book as an ARC from NetGalley and I am so happy that I did. This book has been one of my most anticipated reads of 2023 so I was super excited to read this early copy. I just loved it! What an engaging, original concept.
This story is about a couple, Gabe and Pippa, who live in a house on the coast, that happens to be right by a huge cliff. This cliff is famous for people jumping off it to commit suicide. But at the same time, Gabe, is known for going out to the cliff when he sees people about to jump. He literally talks them off the ledge. But this one day, when a woman was standing on the edge, he talked to her for hours out there, but she still ended up jumping anyway. Or did she? And who was this woman? Did Gabe know her? There are many secrets involved in this story, which in turn gives many surprises and twists along the way.
This book was great! I loved it. I loved the writing, the originality of the plot, and the suspense that kept me wanting more the whole time I was reading it. I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone. This was a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars for me!
I want to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was absolutely glued to my Kindle while reading this. I couldn’t put it down and loved every second.
Gabe and Pippa move into a house with a huge cliff known as a place where people go to end their life. Gabe has a knack for talking people off the ledge - until one day he doesn’t. The twists and turns that follow make this a must-read.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Sally Hepworth for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
2.5⭐️
I don’t read many thrillers, but Sally Hepworth has written two of my favorites in that genre (The Good Sister and The Mother-in-Law). So by that history, I was excited in opening this book and knew I could expect a good story. Sally has such a skillful way of pulling you into the story right from the beginning. She gives you just enough that you have to keep reading to find out more.
I found her approach to telling this story unique: told from two POVs, but one of them holds the view of between death and the afterlife - so she can tell the reader things that are going on that we wouldn’t otherwise know.
At first the multiple timelines (now/then, after/before) made it hard to orient to the story, but once I caught on I was actually impressed with the use of this format and enjoyed the way it revealed facts and details to the mystery of the situation.
Although these two things made for an intriguing approach to storytelling, I unfortunately felt icky (not in a good way) through the whole reading of the book. Be it the manipulative/toxic/codependent relationship, the marital deception/mistrust/strife, the various mental
illnesses portrayed, the shady criminal behavior, or the involvement of children in all the aforementioned - or all of the above - for me personally, it did not lead to an enjoyable reading experience.
Not to mention the ending of the book which had me upset and annoyed. It romanticized suicide and made it seem like an honorable choice. In my other reads by Sally, even though they can be filled with difficult topics and choices, they end with redemptive and hopeful elements. Perhaps that’s what this ending was intended to do, but I do not agree with that choice as being redemptive or hopeful in anyway.
To speak of the content itself, there’s a good handful of s-words and f-bombs but the language isn’t pervasive. There are sexual affairs and references to sex (sometimes used in an unhealthy way) but nothing descriptive.
Thank you to Sally Hepworth and St Martin’s Press for a complimentary ebook in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth follows Pippa who lives in her dream home with her husband, Gabe, and their two kids. However, The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after night Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge. Until he doesn’t. When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral...Did the victim jump? Was she pushed? And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate...lie? As the perfect facade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel.
Sally Hepworth's books are always quick, suspenseful reads for me that I always end up enjoying. While some of the twists in the first half of this novel really worked for me, the twists in the back half of the novel worked less well for me. I found some of the connections between characters really implausible and has some tropes that I tend to not enjoy.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.
Expected publication date: April 4, 2023
I have had the pleasure of reading the last three novels (of seven) by best-selling Australian author Sally Hepworth, and was overjoyed to receive her newest work, “The Soulmate”. An emotional look at suicide and mental illness, and the promises and commitments we make to those we love, this novel is engaging, addicting and thought provoking.
Gabe and Pippa have moved to a beautiful cliff side home with their two daughters, hoping for a new start. But as they soon discover, their house by the bluffs is also a popular suicide location, bringing locals and tourists alike to their own deaths by jumping over the edge. Gabe seems to have a natural knack for literally talking people off the cliff, and has been publicly praised for his life saving abilities. Until the day when Amanda Cameron falls. Pippa sees the woman fall, and Gabe, once again, claims he tried to save her but failed. But when Pippa uncovers the identity of Amanda, and realizes that Gabe knows her better than he claims, Pippa begins to question if Amanda really did jump, or if something more nefarious took place. How far will Pippa go to protect her husband and her idyllic life?
“Soulmate” is narrated by both Pippa and Amanda, before and after the jump (Amanda narrates from an in-between afterlife state), but each section is clearly labeled and it is easy to identify who is telling the story. Hepworth is able to provide the nitty-gritty details of both womens’ marriages by telling the story this way, adding to the mystery and suspense of the plot.
Gabe struggles with mental illness, and Hepworth’s depiction is fraught with reality and compassion. As Pippa creates her entire life around Gabe, to protect him and their children, Hepworth is still able to generate empathy for Gabe, and sympathy for Pippa, while showcasing the devastating familial effects of a serious mental illness. Just in this aspect alone, Hepworth gets my full respect.
The story itself is fast paced and gripping, and I flew through the pages. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, and when the ending finally comes it hits with an unexpected punch. Hepworth has yet to write a disappointing novel, and “The Soulmate” is just another one of her creative, entertaining and suspense-fueled reads that leaves me anticipating her next novel!
Kept me hooked the whole book trying to figure out what actually happened. Rooted for the characters and so happy with the ending!
Alrighty so for this one, I’m giving it 3.5 stars. This wasn’t a bad storyline, I just couldn’t really seem to connect to it or the characters. I really wouldn’t classify this one as a thriller, but more of domestic suspense as this centers around marriage, betrayal, and secrets that all come to light in this book. I’ve read some others by this author that I’ve enjoyed a bit more; this one just wasn’t one of my favorites. There’s a lot of great reviews for this book, so I wouldn’t discourage anyone from checking this one out.
Gabe and Pippa finally bought their dream house on the scenic cliffs in England. Sadly, the scenic cliffs have become a well known spot for folks to end their life. In their short time since moving Gabe has gained a reputation for saving folks considering jumping. However, one night when he goes outside the person still jumps. However, things get messy when Pippa finds out that Gabe knew the person who jumped.
It's been awhile since a book has had me up late into the night trying to squeeze in just one more chapter. Sally Hepworth is an amazing author and I had high expectations that this book exceeded! Not only is this book full of twists it tugs at your heartstrings and exudes raw emotion. I would not be shocked if this is one of the best books in 2023.
When I initially found this book posted I knew I had to read it, because I have enjoyed Hepworth’s previous books so much. It was no surprise to me how much I loved this book. Hepworth knows how to grab your attention, keep you invested in the storyline and leave you with your jaw dropped. I found myself going back and forth on how I felt about the characters. I really enjoyed the different perspectives in which this story was told. The ending really brought it all together. I will definitely be recommending this to my fellow reading friends!
I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.
Sally Hepworth is an amazing author and she does it again! Lots of twists and you really feel for the characters throughout the whole story.
