I wish to thank NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book. I have voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is an amazing book set in Australia. It is told from 4 different points of view about two different couples. Pippa and Gabe bought a home on a cliff above the sea. Later they learn the cliff is referred to as “The Drop” because people use the site to commit suicide. Gabe becomes a local hero after he has talked people from leaping off the edge.
Amanda and Max are a wealthy power couple who are employer and friends of Gabe. As the story progresses the telling from different viewpoints is really interesting as everyone has their own secrets.
Sally Hepworth is a wonderful story teller and she keeps her reader totally involved. The inside look from four different characters just makes a gripping story. We learn everyone has secrets! I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this author
The best that she has written. Will keep you on the edge of your seat. Sally has outdid herself with this book. The surprising turns it takes and the ending are unbelievable. Totally loved it and will recommend it to all
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Like so many couples in domestic thriller books, Gabe and Pippa seem to have the perfect life. They live in an idyllic house on the cliff of the ocean. They have two adorable daughters, Pippa is the primary wage earner and the very handsome "golden boy" Gabe takes care of the girls during the day.
Unfortunately, they learn the cliff side by their house is popular spot for people to take their own lives. But Gabe has found he has the gentle skills to talk people out of jumping.
Until one day he doesn't.
And it turns out the victim is not a stranger.
I enjoyed The Soulmate more than the most recent thrillers I've read. This is my fifth Sally Hepworth novel. I find with most of her books, it takes awhile to invest in the characters and their motivations do not seem very obvious. But she always comes through at the end with satisfying twists or revelations.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC for my honest review.
I am a huge fan of Sally Hepworth and this book further solidifies my love for this author. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2023 and it absolutely lived up to the hype. I stayed up all night to finish! My favorite books from her are The Good Sister and The Younger Wife. The way Sally Hepworth ties up all loose pieces at the end is *chef's kiss and The Soulmate is no exception. This book has dual POV's and each POV has a then portion and a now portion.
Pippa and Gabe are husband and wife who recently moved to a cottage which happens to be very close to a cliff known as "the Drop" where people unfortunately come to commit suicide. While living near the Drop, Gabe has been able to successfully convince people not to jump, until one day when Gabe is unsuccessful in talking an unknown woman off the ledge. In an instant second, the woman is gone and Gab'e's arms are outstretched, leaving Pippa and reader's to wonder if Gabe pushed her. The rest of the book is focused on who this woman is, what really happened when she went over the ledge and each character has secrets that we wonder how far they are willing to go to keep them.
The pace of this book was fantastic, it was only about 300 pages, and I didn't feel like it dragged on. There were lots of twists and turns and I thoroughly enjoyed the ending.
Thank you so much to Sally Hepworth and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. Can't wait to recommend this book to all my friends in April.
Well if you are looking for a binge worthy book this is it! You can easily finish this in a day or two. This was my first Sally Hepworth book and it had me feeling a little underwhelmed at the end of it to be honest. There were twists, but almost too many for my liking. Sometimes I feel like thrillers overdue it with twists and turns and tend to overcompensate. This is definitely one of those. The twists were alright but nothing to write home about. I will give Hepworth another try since this was my first. What I did appreciate about the book was that it was a quick read and easy to follow. Not too many characters to keep track which I am always very thankful for when reading a thriller.
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin Press for the ARC and hearing out my honest review.
3.5 stars
Wow. SH knows how to deliver. I made SO many assumptions while reading this book and turned out to be wrong after every twist and turn. It was a ride. I could not have lived at this house, wow. Loved the dual POVs as well. Easy five stars!
Sally Hepworth has long been one of my favorite authors. I did not think anything would eclipse "The Mother-in-Law" as my favorite book, but with "The Soulmate" Hepworth has eclipsed even her own immense talent and has produced the most intriguing, original thriller that I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
When Pippa and Gabe Gerard find their dream home on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea in a sleepy seaside town, they have no idea that their sweet cottage will soon become a waking nightmare. Known as "The Drop" the cliff outside their backdoor is a popular place for those seeking to complete suicide. The routine the Gerard's have built feels nightmarish, Pippa phones the police and Gabe strides toward the edge desperate to talk down whoever is standing at the edge.
Time after time Gabe talks down their solemn visitors, until the night that he doesn't. As Pippa watches a woman vanishes over the side of the cliff, lost forever. Pippa can't help but question what she saw, did the woman jump? Was she pushed? Why was Gabe so near the woman and the ledge? Once it becomes clear that Gabe knew the victim, Pippa (and the police) spiral further, was this a straightforward accident or is something more sinister at play?
Pippa is left to ask herself how well she really knows her husband, and how far her "soulmate" would go to keep the truth from her. It becomes a race against the clock and the police as Pippa strives to uncover what deadly secrets may really be lurking behind the corners of her complicated marriage, and what really happened that night on the cliff.
Hepworth's keen command of not only psychological suspense and tension, but also her insight into family drama and the inner workings of complex relationships makes her the undisputed queen of the modern thriller. You may be drawn in by the plot twists (and they are there!) but you will stay for the flawed but lovable characters that Hepworth creates. Pippa Gerard is no different in "The Soulmate" and readers will be unable to step away from the story as they watch her plotline careen towards its uncertain end. Already a contender for the best thriller of 2023, "The Soulmate" is a must read for fans of Lisa Jewell, Alice Feeney, and Ruth Ware. Special thanks to NetGalley and to St. Martin's Press for providing me with an Advanced Reader's Copy of "The Soulmate" in exchange for an honest review!
I have a few five star postings in a row now. What I haven't shared is many books I started, but didn't get far enough in to even consider them DNF's. So, please don't assume I that 2023 is going to be a year of 5 stars from me :-).
This was a great read though. Some of the twists I had a good idea they were coming, others not. I was hooked from the start. I enjoyed the characters who all had good traits and perhaps not so good traits.
I have read two other books from this author, and this is my favorite.
I received this as an ARC from Netgalley. If you aren't part of Netgalley it is easy to join. Otherwise look for this in April!
I am a huge Sally Hepworth fan but this one fell a little short from her previous books. The story was line was okay but it felt like it took a long time to get to the dramatic ending. I did like alternating story telling from both Pippa and Amanda’s view point.
I really enjoyed this book. The switching perspectives were fun and I liked having Amanda’s perspective too. I liked the small town setting and all the characters were interesting.
I have mixed feelings about this book. While it had plenty if twists and turns, which I enjoyed, some scenarios (such as Gabe and Pippa's first meeting) felt really stupid. The language was good although. Even with the twists, the book isn't a page turner. The first half was specifically slow.
I'm a Sally Hepworth fan, but this wasn't my favorite. I was let down by the twists & honestly, maybe I am just over the “husband baddie” trope. The writing was exceptional, in true Sally Hepworth fashion and I appreciated the dual perspectives.
5/5 ⭐️
This was my first read by this author, but it will definitely not be the last!
The story takes place in a small, close-knit, coastal town in Australia, where Gabe and Pippa Gerard live with their two young daughters. Behind their home just so happens to be an infamous location where people go to end their lives. A cliff known by the locals as The Drop.
Now, after more than a year of residence, the family has witnessed seven troubled souls visit The Drop with the intention of permanently ending their suffering. Gabe has saved them all.
Until now.
Told from two points of view in multiple time-lines, the story is fast-paced, suspensful, witty, a bit frustrating at times, and heartbreaking at others.
With complex characters and unreliable narrators, if you think you know how it's going to end, oh, no you don't.
The Soulmate is the kind of book that you have to stay up late to finish because you MUST know what happens! An absolute thrill from beginning to end.
No one writes like Sally Hepworth ! This novel has so many twists and turns- even when you think you know what is going to happen . Highly recommended
First off, thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy to read in exchange for my honest opinion. I have read one other Sally Hepworth book, and I liked it. But I didn't have the overwhelming reaction to it that many other readers seem to have to her books. After reading this book, though, I can finally understand why people love her books. Although I do not read a lot of mysteries or thrillers, this book kept me enthralled and guessing until the end and maybe convinced me to read more of Hepworth's books!
From their very first meeting straight out of a rom-com movie, Pippa and Gabe's relationship has been a whirlwind courtship that led quickly to a marriage. Their early days of all-consuming passion eclipsed issues that begin to surface later-chiefly with Gabe's mental health and his inability to hold steady employment.
Pippa is a little skeptical when they move to a seaside home on a cliff known as the infamous "Drop," the site of a number of suicides where people have plunged to their deaths. Eager however for a new beginning, she agrees to give their new home a try. It is here where Gabe finds his calling, coaxing people off the cliff who have come in their sadness and desperation to take their own lives.
However, one horrible night, Gabe is unable to save a woman at the Drop. Pippa is stunned to learn that the woman, Amanda, was the wife of Gabe's former employer, Max. Max and Gabe had an unceremonious parting when Gabe was let go from his job with Max for reasons Gabe has never disclosed to Pippa.
Gabe lies to the police about knowing Amanda. The lie troubles Pippa, who out of solidarity to her husband, reluctantly goes along with Gabe's story. But as Pippa struggles to keep her daughters safe, she fears that Gabe is hiding far more than she realizes and that the life she has carefully rebuilt will be shattered irreparably.
Hepworth once again delivers a novel that is part domestic suspense and part thriller that holds the reader in thrall throughout the duration. Short chapters, multiple POV, and dual timelines between present day and the past engages the reader as we begin. to unravel the entirety of Pippa and Gabe's story.
It's an excellent read and one I highly recommend!
Wow, this book.. Thank you NetGalley!!!!
Every time I worked something out, I found something new that completely changes my thoughts. Gabe seemed like a wreck from the start and Pippa seemed so sweet and together but as the story moves forward it is hard to tell who to believe. I know Shrek likes to refer to himself as an onion because he has layers but Shrek doesn't have anything on this novel! There are so many layers I didn't know who to trust or what was going on for the majority of the book, so I finished in about a day and a half because the anticipation of getting to the end was too much for me to deal with so I devoured this book in a matter of hours. I literally only put it down to go to work. I loved the Good Sister and enjoyed the Younger Wife but this one is my favorite so far. If you like to read about toxic relationships and how they make you do things you normally wouldn't do because you are completely blinded by love you should probably read this one. There are so many dark twists I feel like I need to go watch a Disney movie to recover.
Gabe and Pippa buy their dream home in a coastal town. The cliffs are known as a place for people to end their lives. Gabe is a local hero because he has saved half a dozen people. Until a woman shows up that he knows and is unable to save her. Now Pippa doesn't know what to believe but Gabe is the love of Pippa’s life and soulmate...He wouldn't lie?? As the perfect facade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel.
I enjoy Hepworth’s books as solid thriller/family dramas – entertaining, twisty and multi-layered. The Soulmate is no exception. Despite a cast that included several unlikable characters, the inter-play worked for me. I can’t speak knowledgeably about the authenticity/development of Gabe’s illness but it struck a chord with what I am familiar with and I could relate. I especially admired Hepworth’s ability to shift between characters and the “now” and “then” timelines quite effectively. It's a device that gets used often but rarely as smoothly as in Soulmate.
There were aspects to the pace and relationships that were up and down for me but my biggest criticism was with credibility regarding the setting. Unfortunately, it was a keystone to the entire story. The idea of a location, well-known for suicide attempts, to lack fencing or other deterrents was questionable whether the “trail” was on private or public land. Likewise, that a family with young children would purchase this property without discovering the reputation and/or securing the property for the children’s safety were, in my opinion, oversights in the plot.
My rating bounced between 3 and 4 stars and I chose to bump it up simply for the entertainment value.
FYI - I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Soulmate [out on 4/4/2023!]
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have been a big Sally Hepworth fan ever since I read “The Mother-In-Law” and was so excited when I saw she had another release this year.
Gabe, Pippa, and their two girls recently moved to a cliffside retreat to reset their lives and get solace from the city; the house, however, is near a spot where (scarily) people come to contemplate jumping. Ever since moving in, Gabe has managed to talk many people off the ledge and save their lives… until one night when he isn’t successful in saving a woman. But all is not what it seems with this woman …and her connection with Gabe & Pippa.
This reading experience was so fun; we follow a dual POV between the female protagonists, and with these varying perspectives, Hepworth sprinkles in mini surprise twists as the tension builds. I also loved this one because although you have suspicions about where the plot was ending up… you’re probably wrong about at least ONE of the elements.
I’ve read 4 Sally Hepworth books now & I think this one contends with “The Good Sister” for which is my favorite. I read it in literally one day over the holidays — in almost one sitting — because each chapter left you needing to turn the page. For me, that is the sign of a good thriller that I def would recommend 👏🏼 thanks to @netgalley @stmartinspress @sallyhepworth for the ARC!
