I have read Sally Hepworth’s last few novels and really enjoyed them, but The Soulmate broke that pattern.
The Soulmate is about a couple, Pippa & Gabe, who moves to their dream home – a cliffside cottage. Shortly after moving in, they discover that the stretch of cliff in front of their house is a go-to location for jumpers looking to end their lives. Gabe intervenes and prevents someone from jumping, becoming a local hero. And he continues to talk those at the cliff’s edge down, until one day he doesn’t.
Despite being marked as a thriller, The Soulmate is a domestic suspense novel, at best. There is virtually no mystery among the pages. Instead, readers know the bad outcome from the start. The book instead focuses on why that was the outcome.
I am sorry to say that The Soulmate felt like every other mediocre domestic suspense novel. I thought that the story lacked a unique premise or hook. It also failed to put anything at stake. The worst that could happen? A divorce. For me, this translated to a lack of investment in the plot. In addition, the book uses a mental health disorder as a plot crutch. I thought, or at the very least desperately hoped, we were past this, but apparently not.
One thing I have loved about past Sally Hepworth novels is their unique, memorable characters. I found that The Soulmate lacked this aspect. I never really warmed up to the characters. I thought the ghost narrator was odd and did not care for it. Pippa was frustrating as a narrator and seemed to have the same flaws as most female characters in typical novels of this genre.
Was The Soulmate compulsively readable? Yes, Sally Hepworth can write a novel that grips you and makes you race through its pages. Hepworth skillfully crafted dual timelines and multiple narrators that created an undeniably quick, entertaining book. It is a testament to her writing that I sped through the despite feeling apathetic towards the characters and storyline.
Overall, The Soulmate is a unoriginal, yet entertaining domestic suspense novel. While I still would not recommend reading it, I do recommend other Sally Hepworth books.
Another winner for Sally Hepworth! I am a huge fan. The short cliffhanging chapters told from different perspectives and “then” and “now” make it the kind of book you cannot put down. The Soulmate balances the story of the crime itself with the story of the inner workings of two marriages: Pippa and Gabe, Amanda and Max. It is a story of love, betrayal, secrets, lies and overall commitment. It also covers the very relevant topic of mental health issues. There are a few head-scratching moments for me with choices that especially Pippa makes - starting with how quickly she falls for Gabe and marries him. The whirlwind of their romance is critical to understanding where her head and heart are throughout their ups and downs. The thriller part of this book is great. Love the setting. Loved this book - highly recommend! 4.5 ⭐️
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC!
Sally Hepworth is a consistent go to. Her books keep me intrigued from start to finish and I can hardly put them down. Well thought out and quick reads, I also enjoyed this one.
Traveling With T’s Thoughts:
I have been a Sally Hepworth fan since back in the day she wrote women’s fiction that would make me cry. Now, she writes more domestic suspense and the last 2 books have been good, but have had some hit and miss sections.
This book, however…. well- we’ve got a LOT to unpack.
I’m going to break from my traditional style of review and just wade in the waters of this book.
First things first, it bugs me when a woman constantly props up a man. He may be the greatest, etc- but if you got to talk it all the time- who are you trying to convince, me or you?
Related to the first thing- I really think that Pippa needed to wake up and smell the Folgers and who cared it the sex was AMAZING because Gabe was trouble. And her constant propping and refusal to smell the Folgers was making me roll my eyes in a HARD way.
Secondly, I figured out what was going on with Gabe relatively early and yes, Sally Hepworth did handle that part of the book with delicacy.
What saved the book for me was certain characters I wanted to learn more about. Because while Pippa and Gabe would be fabulous to discuss in a book club with lots of wine about their motivations, behaviors, etc………. me just reading about them and having no one to vent my frustrations too just kind of made me ugh.
Bottom line: There was a lot of stuff I liked about this book and there was some things I didn’t like. Would love to hear YOUR thoughts!

This one exceeded my expectations! I was unsure when I felt like it started a little slow, but I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the ARC!
Actual Rating 3.5
Dual POVs is always my favorite way to read a books. This is my first Sally Hepworth novel & I plan to read more moving forward.
Easily read this in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. The premise had me interested from the go & I was very happy with the delivery. I did go in with more expectations of being a mystery / thriller (I assumed & you know how that goes) more of a Domestic drama. It kept me very intrigued my whole read!
I would recommend!
All in all, this was a good story. I gave it 3 stars because while I didn’t absolutely love it, I didn’t hate it either. There was plenty of suspense and it did keep me up reading long into the night. The plot and story were good, and it is well written. Just wasn’t a favorite for me.
Tis book defineatley had me on the edge of y chair. It is amazing how the author twists and turns things. Honesty, why woud anyone live on a cliff that is know to be the place people lode their lives. THat is what make this book incredible. It doesnt matter the whos or whats. All that matters is the why!! We all want to know why!
This book was not at all what I expected! I really thought I'd figured out the twists but was surprised. Sally Hepworth does it again!
Pippa and Gabe drove me nuts — in the slow moving train wreck kind of way. If you’re interested in the psychological twists and turns of a messy and untrusting relationship, this would be for you.
The premise of this one is interesting — Pippa and Gabe live near a cliff known by people who want to commit suicide. Gabe has been able to literally walk people back from the edge. Except this one woman, who he is unable to save. Who is the woman, and why couldn’t Gabe save her?
There are lots of twists and turns in this one (some believable and some not). I couldn’t put it down despite being annoyed at Pippa! Which means that Sally Hepworth did a good job both with character development and plot development.
Looking forward to her next!

I really wanted to like this one. The cover alone captivates you. however, the writing was a struggle for me. I just really had a hard time getting past it. I had this issue with other books by Hepworth and we may just not be a match.
Gabe and Pippa have lived in their cottage on the cliff for some time now, and while it’s the home of their dreams it also has the distinction of being a popular spot for people to contemplate jumping. The view out their window allows them the ability to monitor those who visit the spot and Gabe has become a local hero after talking several people out of jumping. However, when Gabe isn’t able to save the most recent visitor, Pippa finds herself questioning what her husband is capable of and what she really saw that night. I have read and enjoyed many books by Sally Hepworth and this was no exception. Her books are best described as domestic suspense, as they usually have some sort of family component to them. The ending caught me by surprise in a very different way then a typical suspense novel and it made me appreciate the book even more..
This is not the best by Sally Hepworth. Nor is the title appropriate for the plot of the book. This book was disappointing considering all the hype for this book. I really dislike saying this aboutan author I usually emjoy but I also cannot recommend this book either.

A few months after finishing The Soulmate and it’s still stuck with me. I thought I knew what the plot twist would be but what I discovered was that I never would have guessed the direction the book was going. I’ve read a few other of her books and this one is by far my favorite.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sally Hepworth for providing me a copy for an honest review.
This was my first book Sally Hepworth. Unfortunately I’m going to be in the unpopular opinion as these characters were just so unlikable that I could not finish the book. To be in a relationship that is on the fringes of abuse I just couldn’t get past it. I got about halfway through the book and I stopped. It’s just the characters were too unlikable the borderline abuse the infidelity on and memories from a woman who may have committed suicide. Now that doesn’t mean this book isn’t for you definitely give the author a chance as I will also be giving her a chance on her backless books and any future books she that will come out.

Sally Hepworth is always a favorite of mine so I was excited to get approval to read The Soulmate. Gabe and Pippa are raising their 2 daughters in a newly purchased house that backs up to deadly cliffs. Cliffs that are a favorite spot for people to commit suicide. Gabe has been taking it upon himself to talk people and try to save them. Then one night, he doesn't save a woman. Pippa doesn't trust herself when it appears that Gabe may have pushed the woman off the edge and she is someone he knew before they moved.
As the story unfurls, we learn how Gabe and Pippa met and dated and fell in love and have the perfect marriage in her eyes. They are soulmates after all. But things are never really as they seem.
I enjoy the way that Hepworth shares her stories - in dueling time periods, different points of view, doling out just enough information in each chapter to keep you wanting to read the next. The books are fantastically paced and just make me want to keep going through the story. The twists in this one - I did not see them coming! Highly recommend.
Sally Hepworth does it again! Nothing could have prepared me for the twist at the end. I was lucky to receive this book as an ARC and I could not put it down once I started.
Not my favorite Sally Hepworth, but it’s kind of like the “no such thing as bad pizza” logic. Even your middle-of-the-road Hepworth novel is enjoyable. This is no exception. A really interesting character study with terrible people all around.
seems that I am the odd one out wiith this particular novel, which isn't surprising since the author is popular (I own another of her books and fully intend on giving it a go). Normally, I'm a sucker for a good Thriller, but unfortunately, this was more like a Drama than a Thriller. I also wasn't a fan of the "Then and Now" narration because it took away from certain parts of the story. Overall, I view this book as a 2.5 star, but I'm rounding up because I was able to finish it quickly without feeling like it was a burden.
Thank you to Netgalley & Publishers for access to an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was easily bingeable with some unexpected twists and turns. I have read every Sally Hepworth novel and will continue to seek out her new books. It's like a game of cat and mouse but you really don't know who is the hunter and who is the prey. Addictive from start to finish!
