Sally Hepworth is at it again! Her most recent book, The Soulmate was a wild and exciting ride! Gabe and Pippa look to be living the dream. They purchased their dream cottage on the seaside and are raising their two daughters. Unfortunately, the picturesque home is also a spot where many come to end their lives. Gabe has been able to successfully talk many off the ledge, except for one. As the story unfolds, Pippa discovers the woman was a mutual acquaintance and the questions pile up. Suddenly, what seemed so idyllic is filled with a complicated past rifled with mental illness, infidelity, money laundering and even murder. I adored the suspense intertwined with Soulmate and enjoyed the stories told both in alternating viewpoints and timelines. Hepworth makes us all question what it means to have a soulmate and to what lengths we will go to protect them. The Soulmate is to be released April 4th and should not be missed!
A sincere thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'm a big Sally Hepworth fan, and though I did enjoy this one, it wasn't my favorite. It took me a while to get through because I just couldn't get into the story. While I did find this story about marriage and mental illness interesting, I didn't feel that it was quite as exciting as her other work. It did keep me turning pages and wanting to know the ending, but I was hoping for an twist that never came.
Wow quite a journey the reader goes on in this novel. The twists, turns and jaw dropping writing will leave any reader breathless all the way to the end. The latest from Sally Hepworth provides an insight into 2 marriages in which one marriage family history is impacted by mental illness which led to suicide and another where the family is dealing with mental illness. This book is about what women can do when they hopelessly and a little madly in love. Great approach to the anatomy of toxic and dysfunctional relationships, real pain and deep suffering to deal with mental illnesses. Pippa and Gabe Gerard are happily married for seven years, with two adorable daughters, buying their dream house that resides at cliffside in a sleepy, small coastal town outside Melbourne. Pippa’s family including her parents, her newly expecting sister and her wife living close to them. They seem like picture perfect family. Gabe charming, smooth talker and is stay at home father, taking care of their children after a tragic incident he’s getting through and Pippa is estate lawyer, practical fixer, breadwinner of the family. Recently moved to an area infamous spot where people commit suicide. Gabe is becoming famous for talking people down from committing suicide until one day he is not. We’re going back and forth and read the events from two POVs including Pippa and Amanda as well as past and present. This book will have the reader reading at all times, staying up late and then at the end staring blankly and stunned at the back cover.
Many thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Sally Hepworth for the ARC!
Sally Hepworth is one of my favorite authors, and I devoured this book in a couple of hours! It was so good, kept me guessing until the end, and I could not put it down.
Pippa and Gabe have found the perfect cliffside home in coastal Australia to settle in with their two young daughters- or so they thought. Their house overlooks The Drop- a very popular place for people to go commit suicide. Gabe has become a local hero for his gift of talking jumpers down, until one night he fails to keep a woman from going over the edge. As time goes on Pippa cannot escape the question- did she jump or was she pushed?
This thriller has so many twists and turns and explores the darker side of marriage and the lies we tell ourselves.
This book hit on so many serious topics yet it held my attention and it truly was a page turner.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to review this book.
The plot twists in this had me on my toes from the beginning!! I wish I could have devoured it in one sitting but alas, life happens. The before and after POV are some of my favorite types of books to read.
This was just very okay.
I loved Sally Hepworth’s The Good Sister and I feel like every time I pick up another one of her books I’m chasing that same feeling I got while reading TGS and it just never happens.
This felt a bit too easy, every thing about the plot was easy, and I just wanted some edge or surprise.
A very okay book.
I've enjoyed everything by Sally Hepworth, so when this book came available as an ARC, I was so happy!
Hepworth is excellent at unreliable narrators, immersive atmospheres and twisty plots so I had no idea what to expect. The book opens with Pippa watching as her husband, Gabe, goes outside to deal with someone very close to the cliffs at the back of their house. Set in Sydney, Australia, the couple's home is on a street famous for its ocean views and the steep cliffs that draw those with suicidal tendencies. Gabe has already gotten press for saving one or two, but this time, the woman jumps.
Or does she? As Pippa figures out who the woman was - not a stranger, but someone with intimate knowledge of the couple - her suspicions about Gabe deepen. How much do we know our spouses? What kind of secrets do they hide? In Pippa's case, she's compensated for a lot about Gabe, including his erratic emotional background and past indiscretions. But Pippa isn't innocent; it turns out she's got some skeletons begging to fall out of her closet, and Gabe has been instrumental in keeping them hidden, too.
Pippa believes she and Gabe are soulmates, and for the first half of the book, I can see why. They're both dodgy characters, with little impulse control and a predilection for justifying terrible behavior. Then the plot twists and Pippa must decide if she's going to hang on to her illusions about her marriage or come clean. I enjoyed the surprises and the setting - would love to visit Sydney some day! - as well as watching Pippa woman up and stop thinking a man will always save her.
The world of Australian thrillers is becoming ever wider, and I'm thrilled-- the dramatic location of this novel is vibey and fun. While I found Pippa to be a realistic and intriguing narrator, I struggled with what seemed like over-analysis of her husband's mystery. Perhaps he's not mentally ill, he's just... mysterious! A few loose threads here and there and some unbelievable twists kept this from being a four-star read, but I'd definitely try another of Hepworth's!
I really enjoy Hepworth’s books. I’ve read 3 now and they have all kept me hooked from start to finish and I haven’t predicted any of them. They always have a nice flow to them and characters I’m intrigued by, and this one was the same way. A solid story. I will be buying a physical copy for sure!
Thank you for an advance copy!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press + NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
When Gabe and Pippa recently moved to the cottage on the cliff, Pippa was nervous about their proximity to such a dangerous location - and with good reason. Ever since they've moved in, they realize its steep cliffside is a popular location for those looking to end their lives. Gabe seems to have a unique ability to talk most of these poor souls off the literal ledge...until one night, he's not quick enough to save the woman. When Pippa finds out that Gabe knew the victim, she starts to question how hard he really tried to help her.
This story ended up being middle-of-the-road for me. I really enjoyed the setting and the atmospheric writing. I also liked how secrets are revealed along the way - something that I always finds helps the pacing instead of one big "twist" at the very end. There is one character who has died that we continue to get their POV from and that particular storytelling decision always seems to take me out of the plot. I also was hoping for something more from the reveal...it seemed like just a little bit more communication and rational behavior could have saved a lot of the unfortunate situations that occurred in this book.
If you're up for some suspension of disbelief and looking for a moody, atmospheric story, I'd recommend picking this one up!
I loved this thriller! it was gripping straight from the beginning. I like how the story starts off in the present day and then we go on throughout the story getting some background on the couple themselves. I did not want to it down and read through it quickly trying to get to the reveal.
We follow a family who lives on a cliff basically and it is a known spot where people go to take their life. However since they moved there the husband has been able to save everyone and talk them out of it. Until one lady. but the problem is from the house the wife saw what looked like him pushing the lady off the cliff however her husband denies it. so then we get to see how it let to that point and come to see who the lady was as it was not a stranger. 5/5 stars. everything I want in a thriller forshure.
I actually requested this book by accident and assumed I wouldn’t get it. Somehow they gave it to me and it did NOT disappoint. I thought it would be a slog until I realized I was halfway through the book before I knew it. The characters were done well and the bits of intrigue were sprinkled throughout the story to keep you hooked. By the end I just had to know the truth and loved the way it ended. Definitely a great book that lives up to the hype. A must read!
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the ARC
Gabe and Pippa have moved their family to a little cottage right on the cliff, overseeing a beautiful view of the sea. Unfortunately, they’ve come to realize it’s a location where some choose to end their lives by jumping. Gabe has become a bit of a local hero though, since he’s been able to talk so many away from taking this leap---except one night after dinner, a woman both Gabe and Pippa know, comes to jump. Or did she? Interesting story, although I expected a bit more. More drama, more suspense, more motive. Maybe on the next one!
Special Note: Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Soulmate is a twisty mystery with dual narrators. Each narrator knows just their side of the story which is told with quick pacing and enough to keep the reader interested. It was hard to put down and I enjoyed the culmination of the story. Sally Hepworth has written another great book that will be popular with readers. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC.
Gabe and Pippa moved to a gorgeous house on a cliff to start over. Shortly after they move in, they realize that this cliff is known for suicides. Gabe becomes known as the man that can literally talk people off the cliff until….he doesn’t. But were Pippa’s eyes deceiving her? She thinks Gabe pushed her….
Hepworth has a real talent of making all her characters seem innocent one minute and guilty the next.

Thank you Netgalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this book before it’s April 2023 publication.
This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster that connected with the average middle aged human on so many levels. This book cleverly deals with the highs and lows of a marriage, mental health issues, infidelity and suicide. It kept me wanting to read more so I could see how it ended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5 stars)
Synopsis: Gabe and his wife Pippa recently moved into a new home near the water which also was home to a cliff called “the drop.” The drop was a place for people to go when they wanted to commit suicide, however since Gabe and his family moved in he had ended up talking every single visitor out of ending their life… until the night Amber arrived at “the drop”. After that night, their lives would forever be changed.
This book makes you question all of our choices and actions in life- does loving someone make them our soulmate? Just because someone is our soulmate, do we have to declare our love to them?
This one is a DNF for me. I tried so hard to get into it and just can't get past 20%. The beginning is so slow that I just never had any interest to find out what happens with the characters/plot.
I really enjoyed this novel. Pippa and Gabe appear to be the perfect couple, but of course secrets abound. The story slowly unfolds, from a few different perspectives. I saw some but not all of the twists coming and it had an interesting ending that kept me guessing.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC ebook
Trigger warnings: Suicide. Mentions: substance abuse, homicide, adultery, and mental illness.
This is my third Sally Hepworth novel and I found it to be on par with her other works, maybe even slightly better (all three I’ve rated as 4/5 stars). I was engaged in this read from beginning to end, wanting to keep reading, unlike other novels I’ve read in this genre.
Told from two points of view and alternating timelines (“before” and “after,”) plus short chapters, kept the suspense of the novel. One point of view is Pippa. She and her husband Gabe have just moved to a house near a cliff that is a known suicide spot. The other point of view is a deceased woman who Pippa’s husband couldn’t save, even though he has saved several people from taking their lives previously.
(view spoiler) The published synopsis of the novel lets the reader know that we are questioning what really happened on the cliff. There are many cliché twists and turns, but they are handled in a less stereotypical manner than a lot of other books. Secrets and betrayals occur in both marriages and career aspects.
One detail felt glaringly obvious to me (view spoiler) but that could be due to my personal career/knowledge. I enjoyed this read and will continue to read Hepworth’s other works.
