I knew it was going to be good based on the description but I wasn't prepared for the emotional ride I took along the pages.
This book gives you a false sense of understanding. Typically when we see in movies or books a description like this we think, "Oh, this is how it's going to go.".
Sally Hepworth has the last laugh in this forever twisting rollercoaster of (pardon my phrasing) cluster-fuckery of chaos, betrayal and deadly secrets.
How far would you go to save your family? To save yourself?
This book is an interesting addition to Sally Hepworth’s work. It was not as propulsive as her other books have been for me, but the plot was another interesting “who is guilty” theme.
Pippa and Gabe Gerard, along with their two young daughters, moved to their dream home, a fancy home near a cliff.
Only after making their home there, they find out it’s a popular sight for committing suicide. Gabe has frequently been able to talk people off the ledge. Until now.
Now, the question is what happened to the victim, whether she jumped to her death or she was pushed.
The story is told from 2 POVs: Pippa’s and Amanda’s and moves back and forth in time. I found myself quickly questioning the characters and their motives.
I’m giving this one a 4-star rating just because it took me several starts to get drawn into the story.
This was amazinggggg! I gave it 4.5 stars on Storygraph. I really enjoyed hearing Amanda's perspective from death. I also really enjoyed the main character. While very naive, I found her endearing and was rooting for her. I went into this thinking it was a thriller, and I definitely would not classify this book as that. More of a mystery maybe? But having read other books from this author, this one is by far my favorite from her.
THE SOULMATE provides an excellent game of cat and mouse made better for never knowing who is the hunter and who is the prey. One thing is certain. Few readers will escape the mind bending traps Sally Hepworth has laid as they accompany Pippa and husband Gabe through their harrowing secrets.
Pippa’s situation became precarious from the day she fell under the spell of her gorgeous, magnetic, irresistible husband Gabe…….the perfect man in the eyes of those observing her relationship from the outside. Their fixer-upper home with its million dollar views sits on a cliff (The Drop) that has been the scene of several attempted suicides ……..some of which have involved Gabe. The latest attempt was successful and has eyewitness Pippa questioning her own observations and conclusions.
Once again Sally Hepworth has concocted a potent psychological thriller for her readers that is downright addictive and more than a little twisted.
This was not my favorite Hepworth. Never-the-less, Sally Hepworth has not written a book that I have not devoured enthusiastically.
Although I read the book long ago, I remember not loving the story (indeed, it is a story that is hard to love), but kept me reading solely (no pun intended) by virtue of Ms. Hepworth's skill at storytelling.
I know it is unkind of me to state that I could not understand how the young wife was able to remain steadfastly by her man, when he suffered from manic highs and lows that clearly were painful both to her and their children. I say "their" children, with tongue in cheek. I do not believe that his horrid behavior, at times, was solely (there I go again!) because he failed to take his meds.
There is another couple in the book, whose story was less frustrating and more intriguing. I think that they were the true soulmates in this book and I think I might have enjoyed the book more if the perspective had been shifted mainly in their direction.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this novel (way back when it was still an ARC).
Thank You St. Martin’s Press, Sally Hepworth and NetGalley for the eARC! Sally Hepworth is an auto-read author for me. Her books are captivating and exciting. Besides having a gorgeous cover, this book has suspense, atmosphere, complicated relationships, betrayal, twists, tension, suspicion and a very tall cliff! What could possibly go wrong? One of my favourites for 2023!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Sally Hepworth is the reigning queen of domestic thrillers! It was hard to put this book down and it had me guessing at every twist and turn. I really loved the multiple POVs.
Thanks SMP and Netgalley for my copy.
Good mystery. At times I felt like there was a lot to track but it was a quick, interesting read. I didn’t love the characters but I did care what happened to some of them. There were things I found unique in the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the DRC.
Gaby and Pippa live on the edge of a cliff that has become a popular place for people to end their lives. Gabe has taken the "job" of literally talking people off the cliff. However, one night he doesn't and a young woman dies. Then Pippa discovers that Gabe knew the woman. That bring more questions about what really happened that night. I loved this book. You could feel the pain as both Pippa and Gabe were trying to figure out what happened and why. I would suggest this to readers that enjoy books that examine relationships and why people behave they way they do.
I have to admit, I read this galley several months ago but forgot to write a review. I know it was fairly entertaining, but didn’t wow me. Now, months later, I remember almost nothing about the book because it was just average and definitely not as captivating as Sally’s other books, especially the Good Sister and Mother-in-Law.
Didn’t expect anything less from Sally Hepworth. Great reading. If you want to stay up reading because you have to know how it ends, get this book.
Thank you, NetGalley, for this book.
I’ve heard great things about Sally Hepworth’s books, so when I saw this pop up on NetGalley, I grabbed it. I also follow her on Instagram, where she posts delightful, fun things. However, this one fell a bit flat for me.
From GoodReads: Gabe and Pippa Gerard have just moved into their dream house: a cliffside cottage in a sleepy coastal town outside Melbourne. It’s a fresh start to their marriage and the perfect place to raise their two young daughters. But the house’s perfect façade hides something more sinister: The Spot, where the tall cliffs have become a popular place for those wishing to end their lives. After talking someone down from the ledge, Gabe becomes a local hero, saving person after person… until one night, he doesn’t. And Pippa sees Gabe the moment after it happened, standing alone at the cliff’s edge, arms outstretched, palms facing out.
The death is ruled a suicide— Gabe said it was a stranger devastated over her husband’s infidelity. But when Pippa discovers that Gabe knew the victim, she has more questions than answers. Plus, the woman’s husband swears she wouldn’t have jumped. Why would Gabe lie about not knowing her? Why would she have been at The Spot if not to jump? And did she really jump… or was she pushed? As Pippa works to uncover the truth, the foundations of the life they’ve built begin to crack, and their deepest secrets start to unravel.
The story is told from Pippa’s perspective as well as from the person who died on the cliff, which is a bit weird. I’m not sure why it’s just not told in the third person omniscient. Not only is it from two perspectives, but it’s also in the past and present. This seems like an easy way to tell a story without giving too much away. However, using a different narrator is difficult. See the Dublin Murder Squad books for a masterclass in this style. Narrator aside, the story had some plot twists that were just crammed in there to be “interesting,” and I didn’t believe in them at all. I will probably give Hepworth another try but was underwhelmed by this one.
What a ride?! It was addictive from start to finish, truly. I found myself thinking about it at the most random moments of the day. When I wasn’t reading I was itching to get back to this absolute page turned.
SH knows how to keep you in suspense up until the perfect moment of reveal and understanding.
I absolutely loved this book!! I couldn’t put it down.
I just loved all the characters. I highly recommend this book.
Sally Hepworth is one of those authors who always brings her A game and The Soulmate was no exception. Quick chapters and unexpected twists made this another book that I zipped through. A few trigger warnings are as follows- mental illness, suicide, and drugs. These were tastefully and realistically addressed imho.
Huge thanks to the author, NetGalley, and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you so much @StMartinsPress for giving me this ARC in exchange for my honest and unbiased review (Release Date | 04 April 2023)
SYNOPSIS | Gabe & Pippa's home overlooks the ocean, however sadly is also a popular spot where people go to end their life. Usually Gabe can talk them out of it, but this time he doesn't succeed. As the police start investigating we learn that there is a connection to the victim & maybe her death wasn't self-inflected.
WHAT I LIKED:
- short snappy chapters with lots of mini cliff-hangers kept me flipping the pages
- the non-linear alternating POVs really helped to drive the story forward
- I can never resist a good dysfunctional family
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
- I didn't enjoy how mental health was handled or represented within this story
- the second part of the book felt repetitive & I began to lose interest
- Pippa had such bland doormat vibes that it was hard to root for her to figure everything out
- I just don’t understand why you would move to a house like this if you have young children?!
I really loved this book. Originally I gave it 3 stars, but it has really stuck with me, so I'll move it up to 4 for that reason.
I've always enjoyed Salky Hepworth's writing and The Soulmate was no exception. This book was un-put-down-able for me -- I read it in 3 days! The interconnected elements of grief, mystery, and marriage were so intriguing to me!
Once again, Sally Hepworth has proven that she is a go-to author for a solid thriller. I have read several of her previous works and she consistently writes a thriller that leaves me guessing and doesn't fail to give a twist that I don't see coming. The Soulmate is no exception. This is a great book if you want an escape from reality and one that will hold your attention.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts & opinions are my own.
This was one of those books where my initial thoughts of how the book would play out was totally wrong. There were about 3 plot twists I never would have guessed, which kept this read entertaining. It’s multiple POV and even the ghost of the character that dies has chapters dedicated to her POV. I thought that was a fun and unique aspect. The multiple timelines and POVs were a little hard to track at times but not enough that I couldn't follow along. Overall, this was an okay read for me.
A Massive Thank You to the Author, the Publisher and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this book prior to its release date.
