I've read every book of Sally but this one wasn't her best work. About half way through it dragged to the point I couldn't keep reading. I read her books in 3 days max, this one took me a fortnight . It just dragged on and on without recapturing my attention. You are better off reading another one of her books because she's an amazing author. This one just wasn’t my favourite .
Pros: I think readers who love Sally Hepworth and/or domestic suspense novels will enjoy this book. Although the book got off to a bit of a slow start for me, it picked up at 20% in, and there were fun surprises and twists throughout. The short chapters made this a fast read.
Cons: I think I’ve read too many domestic suspense novels. At first they felt fresh and fun, and now they all blend together for me—multiple timelines, multiple narrators, etc. I was also disappointed to guess one of the big twists early in the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this book.
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is an incredible and fascinating book and is a must read for the mystery lover. Every mystery book that I have read by this author has been amazing, all the twists and turns in each chapter has you on the edge of your seat. The whodunnit changes in almost every chapter and the family dynamics in this novel is very well written. Perspectives from both living and dead characters in this book reveal interesting insights to the story. Mystery, family and murder and what more could you want. I am so mysterious in this review that I don’t want to tell you anymore because this review will become a spoiler review. All Sally Hepworth’s novels are a joy to read and I personally can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. Bravo Sally and thank you to NetGalley for an early arc copy of this book. 🙋♀️🇨🇦👏💐😍
I can always count on Sally Hepworth to dish out a compulsive read where things are never quites as they seem. I am not a big fan of
the ever popular marriage novels that cycle around the consequences of infidelity, money or greed but Sally delivers something totally different. She tackles some heavy triggers with grace and tact. It is an intriguing read.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the gifted copy.
What can I say after so many 5 star reviews? I did enjoy it, but I am not a fan of past, present backstory scenario's. The story is told by the pov of Pippa and Amanda, their two husbands are the entire focus of these two women. Max, an Alpha Male who creates a media Empire, but at what cost to him and Amanda? Gabe, a handsome extrovert, who winds up saving people who come to his and Pippa's home on a beach cliff in order to jump. The story is interesting, it is well written, but I don't understand women who ignore obvious danger signs, so I can't decide if I like either woman or not, then the interesting part doesn't start until 65 percent in, I made certain to observe this phenomenon in the Psychological Thriller Genre. The last three chapters are very good, you don't know which person it will take, but you know something bad is coming. I highly recommend it for people who love past, present stories. I would like to give it a 3.5. Thank you #Netgalley #StMartinsPress #PsyhologicalThriller

My Thoughts:
This was our bookclub pick and my first book from Sally Hepworth. I heard rave reviews of her other books.
The novel is fast paced, unpredictable, suspenseful and there’s also a love story. The trigger warnings includes death, murder, suicide, and bipolar diagnosis.
From the start, I was hooked. Despite the frequent flashbacks and dual POVs, it was still compelling. I did not see the twist and there’s so many. One after another. I found Pippa unrelatable while I sympathize with Amanda. Asha scares me and that’s all I can say without spoiling anything.
This is my first book by this author. I didn’t like the back and forth but it was a good read.
Gabe & Pippa live in their dream cottage on a cliff with their daughters. The only downfall is that people often come to the cliffs looking to jump. Gabe had a habit of talking them down, except for one night when a woman jumps regardless of Gabe’s involvement.
Pippa soon learns that Gabe knew the victim. Deep secrets are revealed. How did they know each other? Did the woman jump or was she pushed?
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to review "The Soulmate' by Sally Hepworth This was a fun, fast paced read that I will surely recommend to others. Ms. Hepworth is a favorite of mine and this was no exception. I really liked the unraveling of Gabe a little at a time and Pippa trying to be the peacemaker for one and all. What a story. Thank you again.
This book was SO good! This read was full of so many twists, some that shocked the crap out of me! The dual POV and then/now timeline kept things interesting as well. The ending was so perfect for this story and somehow still completely shocked me!
“Ah, marriage, you wonderful, complicated beast.” (Pg. 37, The Soulmate.)
What makes a person your soulmate? Do you stick by them no matter what? Do you get so close that you merge into one person? And where do you draw the line? What can be forgiven, and what can’t?
Pippa and Gabe have a beautiful family, a beautiful house, and a beautiful life. They live on a cliff called “the drop” which has become a popular suicide spot. One day a woman appears at the cliff and what happens following this appearance will reveal Pippa and Gabe to be much more complex and complicated people than they first appeared.
How many secrets can a marriage hold until it is too heavy to carry?
The Soulmate is hugely engaging and compelling, keeping me hooked and reading “just one more chapter “ (which turns into another, and another…) I couldn’t put it down. The Soulmate even has a unique narration style, as someone narrates from the beyond. The novel holds its momentum with secrets revealed throughout, confusing what I thought I knew and surprising me with new revelations. One of the best mystery/thriller I’ve read!
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press.
4.5. I was immediately drawn into this book from page 1. A family recently buys a house on the cliff of an ocean where many have come to commit suicide. The husband has convinced all who have come before that life is worth living …. Except one evening he goes out there a d his wife sees him talking to a woman one minute and the next the woman has disappeared over the edge and his hands are poised as if he pushed her. What is happening? I loved how fast paced this book was and the super short chapters spurred me on to just keep reading one more and one more til I was done. Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for the ARC - I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful read.
This was the first Sally Hepworth book I’ve read, and it went so above and beyond my expectations. I am a sucker for thrillers and have been since I first learned how to read, but recently the influx of thrillers has left me feeling oversaturated and disappointed. They’re often overdone and overused plots with the same predictable endings, so for my own emotional safety I went into this with little expectations.
But! BUT!!! this book absolutely took my breath away. I love when books have dual timelines and narrators, and it worked just so well for this book. It added concrete substance rather than just being utilized for aesthetics, and it divulged information in such an interesting and intriguing way. The characters felt unique and fully fleshed out, but still believable. I especially appreciated the conversation surrounding mental illness, but that being said, proceed with caution as the central foundation of this plot is the topic of suicide.
The ending was something else entirely - it was unpredictable and shocking and I never saw it coming, but simultaneously sweet, happy, sad, and fresh. I don’t think I’ve read anything like this before and I struggled to put it down when I had to sleep and work.
Thank you St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for this ARC!! I look forward to reading more books by this brilliant author.
4.5 stars! Another great book by Sally Hepworth! Her latest novel, The Soulmate, addresses a misdiagnosed mental illness that destroys lives and causes much heartache! This books captured my interest from the start and kept me reading until the very end!
Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press, for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed above are my own.
BEYOND….loved loved loved….Sally Hepworth is a master story teller! I can’t wait to read her next book….incredible! Thank you!
After not loving The Younger Wife, The Soulmate brought me back to many things I love about Sally Hepworth's books. While they're billed as suspense or thriller, they're really in a category I've made up: family drama thriller. The story is often a split; there's something in the conventional suspense category (in this case, a suspicious suicide) - but as the story unravels, there is something more going on within the central character's family. I love both family dramas and thrillers, so this mix works perfectly for me.
I usually do not read thrillers, but I am so glad that I read this book. With short chapters, many twists and turns, and believable characters, I was engaged until the surprising end. The plot was both original and suspenseful. I am definitely going to read more Sally Hepworth books.
Thank you, St. Martin's Press and Net Galley for the advanced reader copy of this book.
One of the things I really like about Sally Hepworth's books is that there is usually an interesting theme beyond the obvious main plot. In the Soulmate, on the surface, the main plot is that Gabe and Pippa have a house on a cliff just by a know suicide spot. Gabe has on multiple occasions intercepted people attempting to jump and talked them down. But then someone shows up and he fails to stop them.
Beyond that, I think this book is really about marriage. About the give and take within a marriage. What makes certain marriages work. Most likely, there is no such thing as "the perfect marriage" where you "can have it all". It's about compromise, about finding out what is non-negotiable, and of course hard work and dedication.
Great book. I couldn't put it down.
Note: I received a complimentary review copy of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press.
BOOK REVIEW
#bookstagram loves Sally Hepworth.
I have only read one other, and I thought it was fine, but wasn’t blown away. Still, I am a big believer in giving authors multiple chances, so when @stmartinspress gifted me with a digital #ARC of her most recent book, The Soulmate, I was excited to give her another go.
This is a dual timeline, dual POV domestic thriller told through the alternating perspectives of Amanda, who allegedly committed suicide, and Pippa, a lawyer whose husband attempted to stop Amanda from jumping off the cliff outside their cottage.
Honestly, this one didn’t fully work for me. I wanted to like it but I really struggled to stay engaged (it took me like 2 months to finish it, which is unheard of for me). The plot itself felt like this odd combination of predictable and absurd and I just couldn’t connect with the characters.
I think the thing I struggled with most with was the narrative voices of the main characters. Even as a mother myself, I found Pippa to be nieve and far too forgiving and the phantom POV of Amanda really did not work for me. It was revealed early on that the Amanda is essentially a ghost watching over her husband, Max, as he tried to figure out if she did or did not purposely take her own life. I have said time and time again that I need my domestic thrillers to be rooted in reality and unfortunately this one was a little bit too woo woo.
Hepworth definitely made some original and ambitious character and narration decisions, which is brave and I commend her for that, but they just didn’t work for me.
That being said, if you are interested in this sort of out of the box thriller then this one could definitely be for you!
I have loved every Sally Hepworth book I have read and The Soulmate is no exception! Hepworth knows how to draw you in and keep you pulled in until the very last page. The concept of this story--buying a house on the side of a cliff where people go to commit suicide is such a unique concept. And the twist at the end blew me away! This whole story made me question just how well I know the people in my life and just how well they actually know me. Sally Hepworth is an auto-buy author for me and that won't be changing!
