Another terrific 5🌟 book from Sally Hepworth. She continues to engage me with her interesting plots and great characters. Thank you NetGalley for sharing this with me. I recommend this book highly.
Sally Hepworth is my kind of writer. She describes this one as a murderous love story, so I guess that’s my genre now.
Gabe and Pippa are married and live by the cliff’s edge where many people come to contemplate suicide. A young woman leaps to her death in front of Gabe, but Pippa can’t seem to get out of her head that Gabe’s arms looked like they were reaching for her. it is revealed that the woman is Gabe’s old boss’ wife.
This book is told from dual POVs with a before and after timeline. The twists keep coming and Hepworth kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I didn’t want to put this one down. She also did an excellent job of describing and incorporating bipolar disorder into this book.
Did Amanda the boss wife jump? Why? How is Max involved? Is Pippa to blame?? Pick this up if you love a murderous love story with all the domestic thrill and make sure you have time to finish it because you won’t want to put it down
Also, I think there’s a small typo 63 percent in that says “while we thought we it wasn’t going to fly”
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
So this one was an odd one. I know it has a lot of great reviews but I really struggled to get through it. It was a lot of back and forth and there wasn’t much of a mystery aspect to it. I felt like parts were drug out and other parts were rushed.
Just wasn’t for me.
(4.5/5.0) The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is a dual timeline, dual perspective mystery that kept the pages turning. In it we meet two women, Pippa and Amanda, and we alternate between their narratives. Amanda has recently fallen to her death from a steep cliff in Pippa’s backyard known as The Drop.
But did she jump? Did Pippa’s husband, Gabe, push her? Those are the questions the book is anchored on. And my favorite aspect - Amanda’s story is being told from the afterlife, as she watches events unfold.
I really enjoyed the two-woman narration and POVs. There was a strange kinship between the two characters as they worked to unpack the stories of their husbands and it worked extremely well.
I’d recommend this to those who enjoy a mystery that unfolds with clues along the way and a resolved ending. It’s not a thriller mood, more of a somber puzzle you’re solving. Personally, the ending was not my favorite, but I thought the storytelling was effective.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the gifted and advanced copy of this novel – I really enjoyed reading it.

Interesting Tale Told In Unconventional Manner. I mean, come on, how often do you get a dual timeline tale with two women - both alive in the past, but one now dead and yet still telling her tale - where both women feature in both timelines? I've read a LOT of books over the past few years alone, and I can probably count on one hand - *maybe* both of them - the number of times I've come across a remotely similar dynamic. So read the book for that alone, as Hepworth makes it work quite well.
The rest of the tale, about both of these women's love for their husbands and the lengths they will go through to save and protect both their husbands and their marriages, is interesting enough to be readable, but for some reason it just didn't hit me as hard as Hepworth's prior works. There was never a real sense of "I *must* know what happens next!", though the ending was quite beautiful in and of itself, and yes, even if you're struggling with the book, you need to read it to get the full beauty of what happens there. Overall, as noted, an interesting tale unconventionally told. Recommended.
This book is great! Would definitely recommend. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Thank you for this ARC! Absolutely loved this book - couldn't put it down.
Plot and twists kept me guessing and I really felt like I could imagine being there.
4 stars
Reading the Acknowledgements in the end I can say I am happy Sally H went with this idea than the one she initially had.
The book has an excellent start. A family (Gabe and Pippa Gerard with their kids) lives next to what is known as "The Drop", a spectacular cliff that offers amazing views, however also a place where people come to commit suicide. Gabe is well known to talk people off the ledge. He saved quite a few, until one day when one woman shows up and he is not able to save her. And Pippa, his wife, watching it from the kitchen window while also doing a few errands in the house, she sees something that is disturbing her. Did he try to save her....or the other way around?
The story dives deep and we discover there is a connection between the now dead woman and the family living there.
Sally H is a great writer. The chapters fly by and the story goes back and forth between present and past. We get to discover every person's life and we understand better everything that is happening.
Although this is mainly a mystery, the book explores a lot of topics. One of the main ones are marriage, love, connections, mental health, relationships.
If I could sum up this book in one word is sad. I wish there would have been a different ending, but maybe that's just me.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this great book!
This book had me hooked from the first few chapters! I actually think the first 1/3 of the book was my favorite part. The writing throughout this book was funny and actually made me laugh out loud sometimes and I always like that in a book. One of the only things that I didn’t like was that the two storylines/perspectives were very similar and I sometimes had a hard time distinguishing them. This was a well-crafted domestic thriller and I was debating between
4 and 5 stars but based on my other ratings I would say it’s 4 stars. I haven’t read any other Sally Hepworth books but I have 2 on my tbr cart and I can’t wait to get to them now!
Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and Sally Hepworth for this ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review. The Soulmate will be published April 2023.
Yes yes and yes! I devoured this book and found myself walking around the house with the book even while trying to do chores and/or cook dinner. Those are the types of books I love. The chapters ended leaving you wanting more. Sally Hepworth is an auto buy author for me and this one did not disappoint. Thanks netgalley for the early read!
As I’ve mentioned, I lost access to my netgalley, but did remember this book along with a couple others! So toad I did, as it was so spectacularly written! Beautiful, emotional, tense, and twisty! Sally Hepworth is able to put so much emotion into a twisty, tense, and even callous thriller! It’s most definitely a gift, one that needs to be shared with readers everywhere! So don’t delay, grab this book today! It’s sure to give you all the cravings a thriller lover will seek, but much, much, much more!
Will use my Amazon Vine Top reviewer to review and buzz around!
First of all, thank you to NetGalley for gifting me this ARC of Sally Hepworth's newest novel!!
I love Hepworth and this is now officially my number 1 favorite of hers 😍
Pippa and Gabe live in their dream house....ocean views, room to roam, plenty of space for their daughters. Only catch is, it's right next to the famous cliff known for the jumpers that end their life there. One night a woman appears on the cliff, something seems off about this time, and it's not just the fact that this woman is now dead.
Multiple perspectives, unreliable narrator, family drama, and a mystery to unravel....I don't know how it could have been any better, honestly.
Make sure to check out this book when it gets published April 4th 2023 🤗
I am very quickly becoming a huge fan of Sally Hepworth. Her newest book “The Soulmate”, is an easy read combination of murder, romance and family dynamics. Each of her books has an unexpected twist, with very well developed characters. I look forward to her next novel, and Sally Hepworth has definitely become an author on my ‘must read’ list. Thank you NetGalley for my ARC copy.
This was such an interesting read. As far as thrillers go this one is very tame but I enjoyed the characters and finding out what was going on to connect them all. Probably my new favorite Sally Hepworth book and definitely worth giving a read!
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!
Thank you to NetGalley, the incredible author, Sally Hepworth and the publisher for an advanced copy of this fantastic novel!
Sally Hepworth CAN DO NO WRONG! I was so excited to get an advanced copy. I waited until I knew that I wouldn't be interrupted (camping with no cell service, yes!) so that I could devour this book. I read it in less than 24 hours. I kept having to slow myself down. It's a definite page turner.
Gabe and Pippa! What a story! So many twists and turns. So many times I wanted to grab Pippa by the neck and wring it. She made me crazy standing by her man! Grrrr. I know mental illness played a huge part in this story but I was still so sad that she kept sticking it out.
As always with Sally's books nothing is as it seems then it all comes together nicely. That ending! WHAT?!?!
It wasn't until after moving in that Pippa and Gabe learned that the tall cliffs outside their new home was a popular spot for those seeking to end their lives. Gabe, always charismatic, has a talent at talking these lost souls off the ledge-- until one day when Pippa sees a woman jump to her death. At first deemed a horrible accident, the family attempts to move on from the tragedy... until Pippa finds that Gabe knew the victim, leaving her wondering if the woman really jumped of her own accord.
The Soulmate follows two female perspectives through different timelines: Amanda, "Before" and "After" and Pippa, "Then" and "Now." I found both characters fascinating, and enjoyed all four timelines, although it was a little hard for me to follow along with which storyline was which. This is a fast-paced page turner than I couldn't stop reading or thinking about! I definitely recommend it.
Thank you to the publisher, Sally Hepworth, and Netgalley for a copy of The Soulmate in exchange for my honest review.
Sally knows she can write a domestic suspense!! I was hooked on this book from the first chapter and finished it in a day. Family secrets, a lady talking to us from beyond the grave, main characters unraveling…it was awesome y’all!! Highly recommend!
Thanks so much to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the e-arc!
This book unfortunately did not meet my expectations earned by this author for her previous works. While the setting was somewhat original, the characters didn't seem very unique or even likeable (one of the children especially was portrayed as awful!!), and the plotline was drawn out and predictable. It was fun to read and kept me engaged, but none of the "twists" were all that surprising, interesting, or... well, twisty - they didn't feel like value adds to the overall story. Really hoping this author does a turnaround for her next work - I like her previous ones so much more!
Thank you Net Galley for the ACR edition of this book. I really enjoy reading Sally Hepworth. She knows how to tell a good story with enough twists and turns to always capture my attention. This is probably my favorite book of hers that I have read thus far though. I don't want to give out any spoilers, but the ending is quite shocking. I look forward to my next read by Sally Hepworth!
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is a story written in the viewpoint of two women, but also past and present. Even though I like other books by Hepworth, this was not my favorite. I needed to re-read quite a few times to see just who was being talked about. The story was not quite convincing to me.
This book is about two couples and how their lives intertwine over and over in different ways. One couple has no children and the other has two young girls, born six months apart. Are either of the couples married to their their soulmate, is a soulmate really possible, and if so, do you tell your soulmate everything?
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this advance copy. The release date is April4, 2023. This review is entirely my own viewpoint.
