Pippa and Gabe purchase a home on a cliff near Melbourne. They move in with their two young daughters and hope to live a wonderful life, but the cliff is known as "The Drop", a place where people come to jump and take their own lives. Gabe has managed to save seven people and is known as an angel. When he and Pippa see a woman out there, Gabe goes out to talk her out of jumping, but instead, it looks like he pushes her. It turns out that he knows her, she is the wife of his boss. The police start an investigation as her husband is sure she was not suicidal. Suddenly secrets are revealed and Gabe begins to look more and more guilty.
The Soulmate was a book I was highly anticipating this summer. It is a story that deals with mental health and how it affects those around them. It is a mystery with several twists giving it a thriller feel. My problem with this book is that I really didn't connect with the characters. Although I didn't dislike them, there just seemed to be something missing. The story is told from the POV of Pippa and the jumper/victim. There is also a past and present, which allowed us to see their lives before the incident. It seems like they are close to Pippa's family, but as the story progresses, you find out more about those relationships. This is a story about honesty, secrets, lies, family and a huge dose of mental health issues. I did enjoy the mystery and wanted to know what was going to happen next. I also wanted the family to sort things out as they did love each other and those little girls needed their parents. Although there were a lot of twists I didn't see coming, the story is believable and because of that, the ending was quite emotional and I finally got that AHA moment. If you enjoy a good mystery/thriller, then I recommend you pick up Soulmate.
This one was pretty good, but didn’t thrill as much as Sally’s other books. A couple twists, but also some predictability
This book had me hooked from the get-go and I had to hold on tight for all the twists Hepworth brilliantly delivered. Highly recommend!
Another winner by Sally Hepworth. Ended up staying up all night to finish it and it was exciting the whole way through.
What a whirlwind! I had not read any other books by Hepworth, but the domestic thriller genre seems to be perfectly exemplified by this novel. The characters were not always lovable and it was hard to guess what was coming next. The subject matter can be a little triggering, but as long as you are aware going into it, then you're fine.
I really enjoyed this one! It got me hooked at the beginning and I thought the characters were great.
I love domestic mysteries and this book absolutely scratches that itch. It’s not the twistiest or the most action filled but there are plenty of surprising moments and juicy secrets to uncover.
I enjoyed the somewhat unusual choice of having the victim’s POV throughout. It worked surprisingly well and gave an interesting perspective.
The plot has great momentum and I was able to race through this in just a few hours.
My biggest issue is that there is a conversation to be had about the impact of mental illness on a person’s actions and I’m just not sure this book does the subject justice. I felt very conflicted about that particular aspect which is why I’ve given this 3 stars instead of rounding up to 4.
This book was a middle of the road domestic thriller. I feel like they simply aren't for me. I feel like they are all the same.
Sally Hepworth NEVER disappoints. This book was fantastic.from the very first sentence, to the last, it kept me riveted.
Sally has a gift for insight and pacing. Thoroughly enjoyed this novel!
Sally Hepworth's The Soulmate is a domestic thriller that is easy to follow as the point of view changes between characters and between timelines. The action begins immediately and never lets up.
The Soulmate has all the usual domestic thriller tropes: infidelity, threats, secret pasts, and concerned family members who drop in unannounced. There are also two adorable daughters who bring joy to a story that, honestly, left me with a feeling of sadness.
Readers will want to be aware that themes of suicide and mental health challenges appear throughout the book.
There are a few points of misdirection in the book, nothing outrageous, but just enough to mislead the reader, and then reveal a truth. I do appreciate a subtle misdirect! Upon finishing the book, I initially thought that the ending was rushed; but after thinking it over, I've decided that all the pieces slot together nicely. It's not actually that the ending was rushed; rather, the author did a great job of pulling together all the characters and timelines to a fitting finish.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Loved this twisty novel!
It opens with Pippa and Gabe, who live in a house on a cliff that is known for being a suicide spot. Pippa sees a woman on the cliff and Gabe heads out, intending to talk her down. When she jumps anyway, it starts a police investigation that reveals secrets that everyone is keeping.
Told in shifting POVs and timelines, Hepworth slowly pieces together the connections between the characters and the truth of what happened at the cliff.
I loved this one!
I really enjoyed this one! A great domestic suspense about marriage, secrets, and how we're not necessarily who we appear to be. The short chapters keep this moving at a pretty fast pace (although the middle lags a bit) and I really loved how the author set this up and slowly revealed more about the characters and their histories as the story progressed. The ending was satisfying as well, which I wasn't expecting.
My first Sally Hepworth book, but definitely not my last.
I received an ARC from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
How well do you know your soulmate? When Pippa and Gabe meet by accident at an outdoor wedding he is in, they develop a quick whirlwind romance. Feeling he's "just too good to be true", she ignores her gut and jumps in to the relationship. Despite his tendency to always want to help everyone, he goes from job to job, until he lands what seems to be a perfect job for him as a security investor in a new tech firm. The family of 4 now = Pippa, Gabe, and the 4 yr old girls Asha & Freya - move to the coast, where their house backs up to "The Drop" - a cliff where people come to jump to their deaths. Gabe had talked out of jumping several people successfully - until he doesn't. And what Pippa sees from the window will make her question if she knows her soulmate at all.
A page turner suspense that you won't be able to put down, along with a "what just happened???" ending. Put this one on your TBR stack - Sally Hepworth never disappoints in her twisty books! Thanks to Netgalley for ARC of this book; all opinions are my own.
The beginning of this book starts off with an event in the first chapter and from there we see what led up to it. It is a slow burn (especially in the middle), but I thoroughly enjoyed the authors writing and the layout of the story. Easy and enjoyable this book is a perfect beach read.
I want to thank NetGalley, Sally Hepworth and St. Martin's Press for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
I knew right away when I started reading this one it would be good and I wouldn't want to put it down. Very fast paced with many twists- my ideal thriller. I loved the different points of view in the writing. I can't wait for Sally Hepworth's next book!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the arc. All opinions are my own.
I normally love Hepworth's novels, but this one just didn't hit for me. I was not the biggest fan of the main characters and felt that readers had to suspend disbelief for part of the plot. I was also hoping for something more in terms of it being a "thriller", but I know that Hepworth is more known for domestic suspense/thrill. All the above said, it read very quickly flipping back and forth between narrators and was fine overall, but it will not be on my top list of recommendations this year, especially from her backlist.
This was a LOT. I enjoyed Sally Hepworth’s other books like The Mother In Law, The Good Sister, and The Younger Wife. The Soulmate was slow, didn’t capture my attention, and I was ready to finish this book.
I enjoyed this book. The storyline was very intriguing and I couldn't wait to see how it ended. I would definitely recommend this book and author.
This was a good read. I have always enjoyed all of Sally’s books. I knew “The Soulmate” wouldn’t be any different. I enjoyed the story and the characters.
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is an intense thriller that will keep you riveted until the very end. Who is hiding something? How well do you know the ones you love? What is a soul mate really? These questions lie at the heart of this novel and will keep you reading. I found this book slightly more disturbing than entertaining. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
