I liked this book but in comparison to her others it fell a little short for me. I found the characters unlikeable and unlike other Hepworth novels I didn’t find myself rooting for anyone. Still, you can’t go wrong with a Hepworth novel and it’s still worth reading!
Sally Hepworth did it again….a page turner that kept me up late into the night with a plot twist I didn’t see coming!
From New York Times bestselling author Sally Hepworth, comes a twisty new domestic suspense novel in The Soulmate...
There’s a cottage on a cliff. Gabe and Pippa’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after night Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge. Until he doesn’t.
This story was addicting from start to finish. It was easy to keep turning the pages because of the short chapters. Read this for a thrilling ride about marriage, betrayal, and the secrets that push us to the edge!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from St. Martin’s Press through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Sally Hepworth does an excellent job of domestic drama once again. But be clear, this one is definitely more of a domestic suspense book rather than thriller. The story follows a couple, Pippa and Gabe, who live on a cliff with their two daughters. The cliff is infamous for being a suicide spot, and Gabe's warm and charismatic personality has led him to save many people. But then there's one woman, Amanda, who he does not save and he is devastated. Pippa knows Gabe tried his hardest, right? But then why did she think she saw a push?
This story dives into two marriages, Amanda and her spouse, Max, as well as Pippa and Gabe. It looks into each marriage and what led each to that moment. This book has themes of suicide, mental illness, infidelity, and some violence. I have found some of Hepworth's book to draw me in a little, and I felt this dragged on in the middle quite a bit. I saw some of the twists coming, and didn't really connect with any particular character. I would definitely recommend this as a beach book or if you want a lighter thriller, but it lacks some of the thrill of a true thriller.
I enjoyed this read. It is a great character study with a hint of a mystery. I am looking for other reads by this author based on this book.
I’m still sitting on my thoughts on this one because I flew through it in a day, and I’m sitting here in shock at the ending 🤯
and … I don’t know if it’s a good kind of shock or a bad kind of shock …
THE SOULMATE takes place in two parts - one from pippa’s POV in before and after, and one in amanda’s POV in before and after. I absolutely loved the format it was set up in, and while I was confused at first, I got into the groove of the writing style pretty fast.
this is definitely a domestic thriller at its finest, with SO many curveballs and plot twists, but the ending seemed all too neat for me 😅 in these kind of books, I don’t want to see a happily ever after lol
the characterization was super fleshed out (which I love), and I definitely felt that each character’s moral compass was certainly off the charts 👌🏼 perfect for spooky thrillers am I right
it also just really bothered me how blind the MC pippa was to how everyone was treating her, like girl stop making excuses for shitty people!!!
I think I’m mostly just hesitating on the ending because of how chaotic the rest of the book was and how calm and final the last few chapters were … but I really enjoyed this one so I’m going with 3.5 stars … for now …
a huge thank you to st. martin’s press for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!! this one was perfect for spooky season 👻
rating: 3.5 stars

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with this arc.
I gave this book 3.75 stars rounded up to 4.
This story was intriguing - A suspect suicide, dual povs and shifting between timelines that was written seamlessly. This is my first Sally Hepworth book and it was a lot of fun to read this. There were a couple of twists that I didn't see coming and that made it better.
This one had me guessing until the end & some of the twists ---!!! Whoa! You think you know, but you don't!
This is my first Sally Hepworth book but definitely will not be my last. What started out as a normal family setting quickly turned into so much more. I thought I knew what was coming but was wrong every single time.
Sally Hepworth does dark relationships really, really well. Really enjoy digging into the characters from their viewpoints and learning their motivations and reactions to trauma.
This book started out really strong. I loved reading about how Pippa and Gerald met. I also enjoyed the mental illness representation. I liked the strong family bonds. The story was unique. I loved the idea of the cliff and the small coastal town. Hepworth did a great job making sure to tidy up any lose ends. She is a great writer. There were a couple of things I didn't like. I didn't enjoy the mob like vibes and the ending for Max. This one could definetly be triggering for some people so proceed with caution. Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy of this book!
Are you married to your soulmate or an absolute stranger?
Gabe and Pippa Gerard have just moved into their dream house: a cliffside cottage in a sleepy coastal town outside Melbourne. It’s a fresh start to their marriage, and the perfect place to raise their two young daughters. But the house’s perfect façade hides something more sinister: The Spot, where the tall cliffs have become a popular place for those wishing to end their lives. After talking someone down from the ledge, Gabe becomes a local hero, saving person after person… until one night, he doesn’t. And Pippa sees Gabe the moment after it happened, standing alone at the cliff’s edge, arms outstretched, palms facing out.
The death is ruled a suicide— Gabe said it was a stranger devastated over her husband’s infidelity. But when Pippa discovers that Gabe knew the victim, she has more questions than answers. Plus, the woman’s husband swears she wouldn’t have jumped. Why would Gabe lie about not knowing her? Why would she have been at The Spot, if not to jump? And did she really jump… or was she pushed? As Pippa works to uncover the truth, the foundations of the life they’ve built begin to crack and their deepest secrets start to unravel.

Sally Hepworth did a great job here. The writing was descriptive and the twists and turns were well done. I would recommend it. P
Sally Hepworth has the art of writing intriguing domestic thrillers down pat! This was a good mystery (could be a bit past paced but hence the 4 stars) with hard to predict twists, and the more you think you know, the more surprised you will be. Highly recommend, as unpredictable thrillers are hard to come by!
I really enjoyed this one! There were so many times where I was convinced I knew what was coming, and every time I was wrong! So many twists and turns throughout this book, I highly recommend!
Sally Hepworth has managed to write an intriguing alternating POV and alternating timeline mystery that kept my attention the entire way through. The story unfolds at a great pace, with little bits of information being provided to slowly put it all together. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
First of all, the cover artwork is stunning. The Soulmate is my first Sally Hepworth novel and I really enjoyed it. This was an enthralling thriller from start to finish. I usually do not enjoy multiple POV novels because they can be hard to follow. The POVs in this story connect incredibly well, making it easy to follow.
Pippa and Gabe are living an "idyllic" life. They've been married for seven years with two daughters - Asha and Freya. Pippa is a wills and estates lawyer and Gabe is a stay-at-home dad. The couple decides to purchase their dream cottage without realizing how close it is to a popular suicide point, a cliff. Over time, Gabe starts to save the lives of multiple people by convincing them not to jump. Gabe becomes a hero in town. However, one day this all changes when Pippa watches Gabe talking with an unknown woman near the cliff. The next moment, the woman is gone and Gabe has his arms extended palms forward. Pippa doesn't know if the woman jumped or was pushed, but the police end up ruling it a suicide. Pippa's world is turned upside down when the identity of the victim is released and she realizes she knows the woman.
Twists and turns occur over the course of the book and will leave your jaw-dropping. This will be your next TBR.
A massive thank you to Sally Hepworth and St. Martin's Press for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Trigger warnings: suicide, mental illness, death, infidelity.
A decent thriller. A quick read and enough twists to keep my interest. Not the best, but not the worst either.
I have loved all of Sally Hepworth’s books and this was no exception! This was very well written and played heavily into her gift of writing domestic thriller storylines that keep you guessing but still tug at the heart strings.
Readers are introduced to what seems like a picture perfect couple in Gabe and Pippa Gerard, but quickly discover that things may not be as perfect as the seem. The book dives into mental illness, and the things that women endure while standing by their man. Pippa at first seems to make excuses for Gabe’s behavior but in the end comes to recognize the toll it has taken on her and their family.
The story told by Amanda also leaves you guessing until the end and presents a heartbreaking twist that I didn’t see coming.
Overall, the book was very enjoyable and hard to put down. The short chapters kept me up late into the night to read “just one more” again and again.
I would highly recommend this book for those who enjoy a psychological domestic thriller. Well done by Hepworth.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martins press for this advanced reader copy.
Pippa appears blissfully happy living on a coastal home across form a cliff with her hot husband and 2 precious daughters.
Her husband Gabe is the guy everyone loves and a total catch. He has even saved multiple lives talking people off the cliff by there home, which is a well know suicide jumping spot.
One night after a family dinner a young women approaches the cliff and Gabe jumps into motion. Pippa watches from the window but the outcome was very different! She watches is horror as the woman pitches over the cliff and even worse feels she saw a quick push from her lovings husbands hands.
From this point, we go back and discover cracks in the marriage and perfect life that have been there all along. The book is written in multiple point of views and we begin to uncover who this woman is and the tie amongst them all.
It was a great read--kept me fully engaged and had a satisfying ending. 5 stars!!!
So mesmerized by this story, I sat down to read and did not get up until I was done. In true Sally Hepworth fashion, this story had me from the first page as she wove a suspenseful tale that has you second guessing with twists and turns. Pippa is swept up by Gabe’s frenetic energy. A quick courtship, then a wedding, Gabe is Pippa’s soulmate. But after a crisis entered their picture-perfect marriage, Pippa and Gabe move to a small idyllic costal town trying to start over and settle in a scenic cottage on a cliff. Only after they move in do they realize that they overlook “The Drop”, where many have come to end their lives by stepping off into the waters and rocks below. Over the past year, Gabe has become quite the local hero for being able to talk those out of it and saving them. Then one night, they see a woman on the cliff, but this time is different as Gabe steps towards her with arms outstretched, and she plunges to her death. But it seems there is more to the story about what really happened. Why did Gabe respond so differently? Life begins to unravel, which leaves Pippa questioning everything about her husband and what secrets he may be hiding.
Narrated by both Pippa and Amanda who was the woman on the cliff, the layers of their story and their connection begin to peel back. Wonderfully written with complex and flawed characters, Hepworth draws you in from the very first. Ah-ha moments and surprises that will have you guessing until the end. A wonderful read, I highly recommend this book.
