I read a *lot* of white lady thrillers and this is one of the best I have read in eons. I love a good unreliable narrator, and there’s so much to question in THE SOULMATE as the knots and tangles of this tale become unraveled. What a dang gem.
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for an advanced electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Pippa and Gabe live in a beautiful house near a cliff with their two daughters, but that cliff is known for its popularity as a spot to die by suicide. Gabe usually talks people down from the edge, saving lives since they moved into the house, but not this time. Except... Pippa isn't convinced that her husband is telling her the truth about what happened at the edge, and there are a few other people who don't buy it either...
This one is full of surprises. The story frequently reveals elements that shock you and make you want to know more. Even when the story is coming to an end, you're still finding out the characters' secrets. It's wild, but a fun read.
CW: suicide, death, violence, infidelity, gun violence, mental illness, psychosis
TWISTY! I love a well planned thriller with multiple twists & the soulmate is a great example of this. I couldn’t put this down & spent a whole vacation day reading this. Atmospheric and idyllic location - what more could you want? Read this now!
Pippa and Gabe live on a cliff that is known to be a popular suicide spot. Her husband has saved 7 lives since they moved there, until Amanda shows up and he doesn’t save her. Pippa becomes a bit suspicious of her husband based off of the way he responds to police and then realizes there is a connection between not only Gabe and Amanda, but involves Pippa and Amanda’s husband as well. As Amanda’s husband, Max, starts trying to figure out what happened to her, Pippa’s perfect life gets turned upside down.
💭Thoughts💭
I started off not loving this book based off of the format. I love a dual timeline and a dual perspective, but both at once was a bit confusing. Overall though, the twists were fantastic and I didn’t see a lot of them coming, which is a surprise because in the authors last book, I felt the twists were not very surprising.

⌛️Favorite Moment⌛️
Gabe and Pippa’s two girls, Freya and Asha, were so sweet and funny. They added a lighthearted element to the story and made me laugh out loud when they ran around the house naked and answered the door to the police. I also loved the love that Pippa had for them, especially as you learn more.

🎉 Theme Ideas 🎉
The Pantry, a local cafe, had these delicious sounding raspberry and white chocolate muffins. Try to make some of these with a nice warm cup of coffee. You can even watch the little mermaid, a fave of Freya and Asha’s.
While at times it felt a bit slow but nonetheless it was a solid read! I really enjoyed the premise, just wish it had a bit more action.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this advance reader copy of The Soulmate.
Reading this book, I couldn't help but think that this was at least in part inspired by Don Ritchie, who talked more than 150 people off The Gap, a cliff in Australia. The book certainly depicted the scene in a way that it pulled me in and made me actually see the narrator's point of view of the cliff.
My favourite part about the book was the detailed intro and the alternating narratives meshing so well into one another and the author making it very easy to follow from one to the other.
The story delivered exactly what the book description promised, but it didn't have as many twists as I would have hoped. There were times that an interesting detail was brought into the foreground, but I didn't find them to unfold into a significant revelation.
Overall, I really enjoyed the writing style and will be reading some of the earlier works of Sally Hepworth, starting with The Mother-in-Law.
Oh my gods!!! I loved and enjoyed it!! It was full of twists and turns and suspense. The story was amazing and the characters are just *chef kiss*. I wouldn't hesitate to read it again and am recommending to my friends.
I can't believe i got approved to review this book and thank you soo much Sally Hepworth and Netgalley.
So Happy to have gotten this advanced copy from NetGalley. This is an unbiased review though. Sally hepworth is such a gifted writer! This book is no exception! Lots of twists and turns are in this book making it far from predictable!
I really enjoyed this one. I think the author really pulls off the atmosphere in this book while keeping the suspense. The plot moves in a great pace as well. I really liked the presence of the woman that went over the cliff throughout the book. She is able to find out what happened when she only had part of the story while she was alive. I liked that the timelines went back and forth in a manner that was linear and did not distract from the plot. I think that this is my favorite book from this author so far. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley.
The Soulmate was so bingeable! I finished this one in about 24 hours and it was a fun ride.
Pip and Gabe live in a small sleepy sea town but their backyard is a famous spot for people to end their lives. One night a woman falls off the cliff but was it an accident or was she pushed? Told between the past and the present with several points of view, you get a fun story that keeps you guessing.
The twists weren't jaw dropping for me but it was just such an easy read and so I did enjoy it!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
content warning: suicide, infidelity, bipolar
I couldn’t believe it when I was approved for Sally Hepworth’s upcoming release, The Soulmate, which is set to release in April of 2023. Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced reader copy.
As you probably know, Hepworth is Australian and I believe the setting for this novel was inspired by a popular cliff in Sydney called the Gap which has unfortunately been the scene of hundreds of suicides over the years. The fictional setting is called The Drop and Pippa and Gabe live right next door with their two young daughters. Several people have attempted to get close to the edge, but Gabe has always been able to talk them out of it, until one day he can’t. Was it a suicide…or was it murder?
I thought this one was fine. There were a couple of tropes that are overdone and don’t lead to anything really revelatory. It was entertaining enough but won’t be the memorable read I was hoping for. If you haven’t read Sally Hepworth, I recommend starting with The Mother in Law!
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you Net Galley for a copy of this book, this review is my own.
I have always enjoyed every book I have read by Sally Hepworth and this is no exception! I will admit it is a rarity when a book surprises me with it’s twists and turns and this one had a few I didn’t see coming!
Gabe and Pippa and their small children have a perfect life, living near a cliff, the only thing bringing the ideal home down is it is near a suicide spot where people go to jump. Gabe is “famous” for preventing a lot of these suicides from happening…..until he isn’t…..and everything spirals into a big crazy, insane ride.
I would give this a solid 4 starts!
I love everything Sally Hepworth writes, and this is no exception.
Set in Australia, like many of her books, this newest tells the story of a couple who live in their dream house very near a cliff used for suicides. The husband has become almost famous as the one who talks those considering ending their lives off the cliff, but that all changes one fateful night, leading to a spiral of mystery.
This was, like all Hepworth's books, a riveting read. She is a great author with a knack for plot, dialogue and creating an immersive experience. This should be on your must read list.
Not my fav Sally Hepworth…
This was slow moving and didn’t have the suspense of her past books.
The storyline of Gabe and Pippa made me want to shake Pippa and tell her her husband is a loaf. Not the thriller I was looking for..
This was a really quick read as it hooked my attention from the very beginning. I read it in one sitting! I didn't particularly care for any of the characters, however I still really wanted to know their background and what happened. There were shockers throughout the book and twists and turns I didn't expect. Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC.
While I did enjoy this book overall, there wasn't anything particularly shocking in the twist and I found myself wanting more in terms of the storyline. The Good Sister is still my all time favorite story by Sally Hepworth and I am craving another unique story like that one to get lost in!
Pippa Gerard, her husband Gabe, and their 2 daughters move to a lovely new house by a cliff, but Pippa is leary of her children playing near the cliff without supervision. Gabe s boss' wife Amanda comes to see Gabe one day by the cliff and she jumps off the cliff. Gabe tells the police suicide, but her husband Max refuses to believe it. Are both marriages as happy as they appear to be? Nothing is what it seems. Thus starts the tale in the POV from Pippa, before and after the jump, and Amanda, before the jump, and after her death that ties the story together.
My thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book. I really enjoyed it. This was something different for me. Many twists, many questions you will be asking yourself. I did not expect the connection between the characters. My only reason not for giving 5 stars was too much jumping around between the POV to keep track of. Bit of confusion.
This book kept me captivated through the first 2/3, but the last 1/3 was jumbled and I had a hard time not putting it down. The characters criminal involvement felt shaky and unbelievable. It didn’t interest me. I don’t see this book as one to recommend to many people. Her previous novels were more satisfying all the way through.
My mom is obsessed with Sally Hepworth and has read all of her books, but I haven’t gotten around to reading them yet. So when I had the chance to read The Soulmate, I jumped at it so I could see what the fuss was all about. I totally get it! Sally Hepworth is an amazing writer - this book just flows! My mom is always raving that her work just reads flawlessly and now I completely agree! The Soulmate will make you question who you think is “bad” and “good” and with plenty of twists, it never gets slow. Good story, great writing. I highly recommend and will be purchasing a copy when the book comes out.
I received an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for a review and opinions are my own.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley.
Let me just start out by saying the chapters were short. I appreciate that, especially when I can’t read a book as quickly as I would like to. With that said, I was so excited to read this book. I’ve read several other books written by Sally Hepworth and they were great! I wish I could have read this book quicker than I did. Having to stop and start so many times, I think it lost the affect for me.
Pippa and Gabe move to a beautiful, large home located on a cliff. Downside is this cliff is known for suicides because of the ocean on the side. Gabe has saved several people from this cliff previously and is hailed a local hero.
Max and Amanda have a relationship of convenience or so they think. I enjoyed how Amanda’s story was portrayed. With that said, the ending took me by surprise. Their are lots of twists with this story. Just when I think I know what is going to happen, something unexpected happens.
It was a great story but I did not enjoy it as much as I have some of her other books.
