Excellent book!!
This book kept me on the edge the entire time!
Definitely going to be on my top 10 for this year!
A new book by Silky Hepworth always makes me very happy. I love all her main characters and I love the humor in them. This one is especially good. Two couples are the stars of this one, Pippa and Gabe, a couple who were bought together by their sheer magnetism and Amanda and Max bought together by arrangement and social practicality. With a narrative mostly by Pippa, occasionally by Amanda, we have a front row seat to the strengths and fragility of marriage and the power and destruction of a successful business and the lengths to keep all intact. Superb writing kept me hooked to the last page and I hated for it to end.
Gabe and Pippa's dream home comes with a price, a popular suicide spot is located close to their backyard. Usually Gabe is successful in talking people out of their final plan, but this time he isn't. Pippa has suspicions about her husband. Did the person actually jump or was she pushed? As we find out the story of the woman who died by suicide, secrets of Pippa and Gabe are revealed. Sally Hepworth has written a novel with twists you won't see coming. Once again, she's written a domestic thriller that will have you turning the page.
Gabe and Pippa live in a cliff side cottage with their two daughters, what they believed to be their dream home. Unfortunately the cliff is a popular spot for people to end their lives. Gabe, a local hero, has successfully talked several jumpers away from the edge until one day he is unable to intervene. When the victim's identity is revealed Pippa realizes the connection and begins to question what she saw...did she jump or did Gabe push her?
The Soulmate is a twisty mystery involving two couples who's connections are slowly unraveled to reveal a complicated past. Told from the perspectives of Pippa and Amanda, the reader is taken from past to present as they uncover secrets from the past and present. This was a fun, fast, and entertaining read perfect for a relaxing weekend.
I love this author's books, but this one was just so-so. The plot didn't grab my attention they way her previous ones did. Hey, you can't win them all, I guess. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I will read anything that Sally right. This book blew her other ones out of the water. I thought it was more thriller versus her former mostly domestic suspense books. I like the POV of a ghost. I thought that was very unique. I didn’t try to guess the twist because I was just trying to enjoy the ride. The story was gripping atmospheric, and even had some humor within heavy subjects. This is an auto by author for me and I absolutely love the cover.
Often times, I will finish a thriller and think “i liked that book,” until I start thinking about it and all the glaring annoyances will become obvious. The Soulmate was the opposite; I actually liked this book more after I finished it!
Gabe and Pippa live in a lovely cliffside cottage outside Melbourne where they hope to raise their daughters. Unfortunately, the house’s perfect facade is shattered by the fact that it sits amount tall cliffs called The Spot- which has become popular among people wishing to end their lives. Gabe talks several people off the edge and becomes a local hero… until one night, he doesn’t. The death is ruled a stranger, but Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim and has more questions than answers.
This was an addictive read that completely captivated me. It’s truly a great psychological thriller, but also a heartbreaking romance. It’s multi-layered, unexpected and perfectly executed.
I highly recommend this one to fans of domestic thrillers. Five stars!
The Soulmate releases on April 4, 2023. Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this digital reviewer copy in exchange my honest opinions.
I've read a few books by Sally Hepworth and enjoyed them, but didn't love them. I would add this one to that list. It definitely kept me guessing and the twist at the end I for sure didn't see coming. I enjoyed the short chapters and alternating viewpoints from the two women in the story. I also enjoyed the Australian terms for things. As I'm American, it made me smile reading what their terms were for certain things. I love a good mystery this time of year (October), so this fit the bill.
Thank you so much for this ARC! As usual, Sally Hepworth does not dissapoint. I absolutely TORE through this book. I'm not sure what it is about her writing that compells me to flip through the pages so quickly, but once I start one of her books, I simply cannot put it down.
I really love the way Hepworth weaves stories of mental health into her novels, and as someone that has experienced some of these story lines first hand, it makes the characters so much more real. Their complexities are what make them so readable.
Well, well done
Get ready for the ride of your life with The Soulmate! As you try to figure out the secrets, author Sally Hepworth will trip you up with incredible twists and suspense. A fast moving and entertaining book, readers will enjoy it from the first page to the last. Thank you to NetGalley.
Well, for starters - I do love the way Sally Hepworth writes. But this story in particular didn’t necessarily grab my attention that well.
The twists themselves weren’t super intriguing, and I did end up setting it down for a bit before finally going back to finish.
In the end, I honestly just felt really sad. Which is a perfectly normal reaction and I’m not saying it was bad because of that, I think it’s just not what I really expected.
Excellent writing and a thrilling story! I was hooked from start to finish. Can’t wait to read more from this author!
3.5 rounded up
This was a fun thriller and just twisty enough to keep me interested from start to finish. However, I will say the first half was a bit more interesting. Once I got a sense for where the story was going, it was a little more dull. Idk if that’s because it was mostly cut and dry, or the plot itself? It wasn’t bad, just average..
The writing was good (except for the several mentions of Pip “slurping” her drinks… ugh! I cringed every time haha) and the characters were fleshed out just enough that I cared about what happened to them. Pip was also a great mc; she was loyal to a fault, made mistakes, cared about her daughters and family… I’m normally not very interested in stories/characters that lean heavily on the aspect of motherhood, but I liked Pip.
I also appreciated that Gabe had a mental illness, and Hepworth made a point to talk about how the illness itself wasn’t what made Gabe a bad person—it was his actions that created a chaotic, volatile atmosphere around him. A lot of thrillers demonize mental illness, so it was a much better take (and Hepworth mentions having sensitivity readers for bipolar disorder, which is also good to see).
Maybe not my favorite story, but solid. This is my second Hepworth book, and I don’t think it will be my last!
Thanks NetGalley for the amazing opportunity of getting this ARC copy. Honestly I couldn’t put this book down, I literally finished it in 2 days. This is the second Sally Hepworth book I read and it will for sure not be the last one. This domestic suspense book had so many twist plots and keeps you hooked from the start. I can’t wait to see what Sally will write next. I highly recommend you adding this to your TBR
I usually enjoy Sally's novels but this one just didn't grab me. Something about it was off. I think she was trying to address too many issues along with the murder mystery. Initially I was into it, but a little after halfway, I started losing interest. Not terrible just not the "thrilling", "addictive" ride I was waiting for.
When I saw the Read Now option for The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth on NetGalley, I couldn’t believe my eyes and downloaded it immediately. I love that despite the mundane titles of her books, I know the author will deliver anything but a boring story.
Gabe and Pippa leave the city and move to a cottage in a small seaside town outside Melbourne. They were looking for a fresh start and a nice place to raise their daughters. Unfortunately, their house is located just in front The Spot which also happens to be a location popular for people wanting to end their lives due to its steep drop. Gabe becomes a bit of a local hero due to his ability to talk many people out of ending their lives. Then one night, Gabe spots a woman on the cliff’s edge and runs out to help her. Pippa sees Gabe take a step towards the woman, she becomes occupied with her daughters and when she looks up again, the woman is gone and Gabe is standing there with his arms outstretched, palms out. The police rule it a suicide, but when it comes out that Gabe knew the woman, Pippa starts questioning what she saw and what really happened on the cliff that night.
Sally Hepworth is a master at dishing up domestic suspense with a side of family drama. This story is told past/present from Pippa's perspective and then also from the perspective of the woman in question. I liked seeing everything unfold from both perspectives and watching the pieces of the puzzle come together. A few times throughout the book I wanted to shake Pippa and ask her what the heck she was thinking. This book has short chapters which I love because they make it hard to stop reading even when I am exhausted. There are a few twists throughout the story, one of them I thought I had figured out but boy was I wrong. Sally Hepworth continues to be a favorite of mine and I will read anything she writes. 4 stars.
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth
Pippa and Gabe move to a house near "The Drop", a cliff where several have taken their own lives. Gabe is known to talk people off the cliff but he is not successful and a woman jumps. Pippa finds out that Gabe knew this woman, and the picture perfect married life that is presented at the beginning of the book slowly unravels.
This was a quick and easy read, with short chapters, quick pacing, and alternating view points. It had a lot of the typical twists that you expect in a thriller but none were very shocking or original. I disliked Pippa the more that I read and felt like the relationship between her and Gabe could have been developed more. The ending tied everything up nicely.
This was not the craziest thriller but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And no harm came to any cats! Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this AMAZING digital reviewer copy with me.
The Soulmate was a thriller with so many twist and turns. I was sucked right in and could not put the book down. Definitely had me guesses who was good and who was not.
Can we just go ahead and all agree that @sallyhepworth is the new queen of domestic thrillers?
Since the Mother In Law, I have been absolutely obsessed with anything Hepworth releases. Thank you so much to @stmartinspress,@netgalley and Sally for the chance to review this pulse pounding thriller.
A page turner at its finest! Gabe and Pippa have it all; beautiful kids, successful career, helpful family... and now since they've moved into their perfect home on a cliff, Gabe has made a name for himself by talking would be suicidal people out of their decisions. Until one doesn't... what did Pippa see? Why were Gabes hands turned outwards?
As the truth unravels we're thrown into a story of deceit, cheating, and dark secrets. Could it be that maybe Gabe isn't who Pippa thinks he really is? After all.. she has been fully supportive of his past indiscretions. Told in multiple POVs, the Soulmate is one hell of a ride that I devoured.
The Soulmate has a perfect plot twist and a few minor sub twists that left me in absolute tears! Highly recommend!
Thank you Sally Hepworth, NetGalley and St. Martin’s press for this advanced digital copy. I could not put this book down! I loved the twists and turns of this book. This book has great character development and kept me guessing until the end!
