Yet again, Sally Hepworth has written a novel I just can't put down. The Soulmate had me from the very first couple of pages, and the propulsive writing kept me reading until too late several nights in a. row.
These aren't likeable characters and the reader might get frustrated at Pippa's inability or refusal to pay attention to the occasional troubling thoughts she has. But you'll want to find out just how it all comes together, and the ending is a satisfying one.
Many thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for a free e-copy for review.
I was so excited to get my hands on the advanced copy of this psychological thriller. I flew through it in just two days and loved how I kept wanting to pick my Kindle back up. I usually don't like when books aren't written chronologically but it was easy to keep up with the timeline and the different points of view. I loved how there were multiple twists and just when you thought you had it figured out, another one came at you. I can't wait to read more of Sally Hepworth's books.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this AMAZING digital reviewer copy with me.
This is my first time reading a book by this author, the synopsis gripped me right away and wow I am so happy I picked this book up!
I am a sucker for a tragic love story, and this book delivers ten fold! I loved all the different twists, every time I put the book down I ended up picking it right back up to read just a few more chapters, if I didn't have to sleep or eat or work I would have just binged this entire book in one sitting!
I especially love multiple POV books and was especially happy to have that in this book as it added to the mystery and thriller feel of it, you were always kept guessing on what the character was truly seeing, I urge you to go into this book as blind as I was, it makes the psychological whiplash that much more intense.
I have recently gotten into thriller books and this story just made me want to read more and more of them!
The Soulmate is one of the best novels I've read this year. Just when you think you've figured it out, another twist occurs. The story is easy to follow and get in to. If you like books where nothing is as it seems, read it. The good guys are the bad guys and the bad guys are the good guys. I hope there will be a sequel that follows the young girls into adult because I bet Asha gets into some series sh!t.
I love Sally Hepworth books so much that when a new one comes out I purchase it without even reading what it’s about. I love how this book starts with a twist! Two actually - the actions of Gabe and Asha.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sending me an ARC of The Soulmate in exchange for an honest review.
Looking to move past some rough patches in their marriage, Gabe and Pippa buy a cliffside house outside Melbourne, Australia. But they soon learn that their new home is near a spot called The Drop where many people have leapt to their deaths over the years. Several times, Gabe has seen some standing near the edge, gone out and talked to them until they decided not to jump. Until one day, when Pippa saw a woman at the Drop, Gabe went out to talk to her, and in the moment Pippa looked away, the woman fell to her death. Gabe insists she jumped, but that’s not what it looked like to Pippa. And when Pippa learns who the woman was, and the connection to her and Gabe’s past, it places their marriage—and maybe even their lives—in danger.
The Soulmate is told from four perspectives. There’s Pippa’s present-day narrative, as we move through the events at the Drop and the aftermath. There’s Pippa’s flashbacks, as we see how she and Gabe‘s relationship developed and the problems they’d overcome (or not) before they moved to the Drop. There’s the flashbacks from the dead woman, as we learn who she is, her connection to Gabe and Pippa, and she went to the Drop that night. And then … and then there are the sections from the dead woman’s present-day narrative. Yes, the victim’s ghost also narrates portions of the events in the aftermath of her death. Sometimes she’s a lie detector for the preceding chapter, sometimes she can see into another character’s past. She can even be in multiple places at once—it’s like having an omniscient, third person narrator in the form of a sarcastic, first-person one.
The Soulmate is a solid domestic suspense novel. It’s got some insights on marriage and a good story with at least a half-dozen twists. Recommended, but your enjoyment of the book is probably going to rise or fall based on your acceptance of the beyond-the-grave narrator. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Oooh… lots of twists in this book - right to the very end. Loved it! I definitely didn’t expect what came in the last few chapters.

👍🏻The story pulled me in immediately and made me eager to keep reading. I seriously did not want to put this book down.
👍🏻I liked the way the story was told from Amanda's perspective as well, both past and present.
👍🏻It was fast-paced and a page turner, for the most part.
👍🏻Some of the plot twists really surprised me. I usually predict twists easily- but this one kept me guessing with most of the twists and turns.
🤷🏻♀️ This could have been a good message about mental health and the impacts of misdiagnosis, but instead it felt like a stigmatizing and misrepresentation of people with the mental health disorders referenced in this book.
👎🏻Pippa was very annoying, weak, and melodramatic. It was hard to root for her. Her husband was her personality trait, which was very obnoxious.
👍🏻If you like domestic thrillers or domestic dramas, you should definitely read this book.
Fans of Sally Hepworth will enjoy her latest domestic thriller, “The Soulmate.”
Gabe and Pippa move into their dream home, located on a cliff, a cliff that is popular with individuals who wish to end their lives. Yet, Gabe is determined not to let that happen—talking down one person after another to keep them from jumping. Until the time he doesn’t succeed.
Pippa discovers that Gabe and the deceased woman (Amanda) have a connection. Determined to find out what that connection is, Pippa discovers a few additional surprising truths about her husband.
Told in the alternating point of views of Pippa and Amanda, this novel sends its reader on a rocky yet captivating journey. I thought Hepworth did an excellent job at building suspense but also takes the time to really develop her characters. I was surprised when I got to the end as I wanted to keep on reading.
My thanks to St. Martin’s Press, the author and NetGalley of this intriguing book.
Wow Sally you fully stumped me this time! I was hopeful going into this book that she would be ack at her best and she did not disappoint. This book is full of many twists, and just when you think you know what is going on, another one comes your way and sets you on a different path. I couldn't put this book down and ended up finishing it within a day.
I was not sure initially how I felt about the ending, but I am okay with it. It served the story well. Pippa deserves some happiness with all she has been through.
Strong plot, short chapters. Just the way I like it.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC.
How well do you really know your spouse? Will your loyalty, trust, and fidelity be reciprocated?
Pippa and her husband Gabe live in a seaside house that borders onto tall cliffs where people have committed suicide by falling off into The Drop. Gabe becomes a local hero by convincing several people to reconsider and come away from the brink. But one evening there was a woman he couldn’t or didn’t talk away from The Drop. This time he knows the woman. And how he knows this woman and how this woman is involved in their lives provides all the twists, turns, and surprises throughout the entire book.
The book is told through the perspectives of Pippa, then and now, and Amanda, before and after. The twists, turns, and surprises of marriage follow along with the twists, turns, and surprises of the plot to make this a book that is hard to put down. Confession after confession kept coming at nearly every chapter’s end.
It’s not until the very end that you understand the book’s title. It is a bittersweet revelation.

If you have never read a Sally Hepworth novel, you’ve been missing thrilling, addictive and on the edge stories that sweep you away.
What can I say about “The Soulmate”…this story will keep you on the edge and up all night trying to finish at that is exactly what I did. Gabe and Pippa have moved into a cottage that sits on the cliffside in a small costal town. Unknown to them, the house and its surrounding cliff has become a haven for people who wan to commit suicide. Gabe is not the talk of the town as he has been cast as a hero from talking people off the cliff’s edge…called “The Drop”. One dark night, a woman shows up and Gabe runs to her as the savior as Pippa watches from the window. One minute his hands are reaching for the woman and then she disappears. What has happened? Usually Gabe rescues those on the cliff but this time, did he miss saving her or was he the cause of her demise? What happens when you believe your savior is now a murder?
I absolutely loved, loved this book. My attention was captured from start to the very finish. Hepworth never fails to provide you with a plot filled with mystery, suspense, and twists and turns on all ends, especially at the short chapter endings. She provides you with a slow, well-paced, and suspensefully crafted story encompassing chills and guesses. There’s a portrait of a happy family that soon dives into a world of secrets and later tattered home. A well-written story with well developed characters that appear likeable with a bit of mystery. Normally, I tend to shy away from novels that have backstory POVs, however those in this novel does the POVs of Pippa and the dead woman credence.
This review is minimalizing what this story is about because you read it to really enjoy the whole picture. A quick read with triggers of suicide, depression, and mental illness that may not be for everyone, but I do recommend reading if you can get pass the warnings.
I LOVED this. The short chapters made it quick and easy to consume between real life events. In terms of thrillers, it wasn’t particularly twisty turny or shocking but the story still sucks you in and, for me, was a happy ending.
I felt that my questions were adequately answered by the end but there was enough ambiguity that it feels like a good candidate for a group or buddy read. It might inspire some riveting discussions!
I loved this story! I loved how the book is told through the POV of Pippa and Amanda (the dead woman). It was refreshing to read a thriller that was actually thrilling.
Gabe and Pippa live in a coastal house right at the edge of a cliff that happens to be a popular suicide spot. Gabe has made a name for himself by talking people off the ledge, literally, until one day when a woman jumps and he fails to stop her. Pippa isn't convinced that he had nothing to do with her fall, despite what she tells the police.
Sally Hepworth does it again! She is the queen of writing fast paced thrillers that will keep you on the edge of your seat, dying to know more. I fell in love with some of the characters in this one, but not the ones you would expect off the bat. There were quite a few twists in this one that kept me guessing and I definitely did not see the ending coming, which made me love it even more. I'm a sucker for multiple POVs and this one had a nice twist on it. I will continue to devour anything this author puts out!
I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
This was a slow burn but in the best kind of way. Sally Hepworth is a favorite of mine so I was so glad to read another hit novel! The cover is gorgeous and draws you in immediately. The story had me guessing up until the very end. 10/10 recommend this book!
This book had me surprised at the end of each short chapter, and I couldn’t stop myself from reading “just one more chapter”. As I read, I could feel the image of the perfect family presented at the beginning of the novel unraveling with each page in the most unexpected ways. I felt myself clambering, grasping to go back to the way things were in the chapter before, before the twist, before the new information and I imagine that is how the characters felt too. Sally made me feel like one of them, brought the emotions to the surface and drug me into the story. And I loved every minute. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book this fast, sneaking in pages at every chance. The good news is that Sally has a lot of other books, which I haven’t read yet, and now am desperate to read.
I really enjoyed this book. Short chapters, suspense, gradually revealing more of each character - yes please.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
This was a great fast paced novel, revealing what it means to be dedicated to the person you married, through good times and bad and how it can change you into someone you don't want to be. The characters are well developed but I have to question their dedication to each other. What makes a marriage strong enough to withstand infidelity and mental illness? How does one remain in a situation that has hurt them? This is a book that I will gladly hand sell to those who like twisty plots and shocking motivations.
Brilliantly done, Ms. Hepworth. I love a thriller that keeps you guessing and this one did just that. Mysteries are revealed, answers are given - and then then the rug is pulled out from you time and again as what you thought you knew wasn't the whole story. I enjoyed this one immensely.
